In my previous truck I had DS18 tweeters. Yes, they were cheap, and I was overpowering them. I had 6 tweeters literally explode. The first time I had my windows down and I thought it was a gunshot. Then I realized what happened. When the driver windshield tweet exploded I actually got burned by the debris 😆
I like to set a high-pass on the amplifier as a failsafe if the DSP loses settings or the operator changes them accidentally. Set it lower than your DSP frequency so it does not interfere, but high enough to save your speaker. If your amplifier does not have a suitable high pass filter, for your 4ohm tweeters, a 20-50uF capacitor is a reasonable failsafe.
Can you please give an example with figures so I understand a bit better? Meaning what do you meant by set the amplifier frequency lower than the DSP. Thanks
@@orvilleblack3774i have my compression driver's high passed at 1500 Hz on my DSP. But I have the high pass on the amplifier set at 600 hz. It doesn't interfere with the sound, but it did save my tweeters a little while ago when I messed up my DSP settings.
In 1996 i bought a set of rockford fosgate punch 14x tweeters, they are still playing💪🏼 but they also have a built in protection in the crossover box, so when going to high they shut down until volume is turned down....soft dome and still sounding crisp...
I did the same damn thing with my mid-bass drivers this past summer. Wasnt too exp of a mess up thank god. Your not alone brotha, not by a long shot. I also recently got for my home rig a hella rare Hafler amp, Transnova 9505 that needed its faceplate bant back to shape. Fixed the plate, but I accidentally swapped rectifier wires while reassembling, and it appeared I had EPICALLY smoked it when I turned it on. I vomited, no joke..... I found an electronics warlock within driving range who just informed me it was much more fixable than I thought. Thank god, would not have forgiven myself for killing such a badass rare amp.
I hear ya. I installed a cheaper than I should have head unit with a Maestro Rr and have a bit of a whine. Added a 14ga ground wire and it went away some. It’s still there. I haven’t had this issue for a LONG time. Maybe 15-20 years.
@@DIYAudioGuy The fact that I attenuated it a little with a ground wire tells me a lot. I think I’ll try a 12 gauge one and see if that helps more. Thankfully, 35 years of music, tools and concerts have made that whining noise almost un-hearable to me.
I don't get what magic speakers with huge ferrite magnets have, but they play super high and efficiently. Got to play with 2 pride solo evo 6.5s, I'm a bit more sensitive to mids and highs, so with those speakers I wouldn't even need a tweeter. AND it was very loud even at low volumes, the amplifier was almost at minimum gain and I didn't need more.
Will you be making videos about the CDSP8x12? I hope you got the DL version :). There is a great tuning guide on the forums that will give you killer sound using Dirac Live.
Also folks, be careful with tone generators too. I smoked the tweeters in my coax's turning it up to 16k with too much volume. It literally takes seconds... i was trying to see what the highest frequency i could hear in my radio.
Their website is not well laid out, there's a different product page that gives the specifications and a different product page for making the purchase. Eventually they'll figure out that It's costing them money and then they'll fix it.
I just installed a JP40 lithium battery and mine drops down to 12 volts at full tilt I gotta mechman 240 amp alternator with 0 gauge wire and my last down4sound LTO 6.0 would stay in the 14s I don’t understand why I’m dropping 2 volts. Any suggestions?
@ checked my connections every thing is tight it’s kinda weird because all I did was take out the LTO 6.0 and put the jp40 in the same spot same wires but the jp40 is dropping to 11 volts i don’t know what’s going on.

My personal favorite tweeters are the Polk Audio ❤ silk dome tweeters. Absolutely love them and everything this brand puts out.
Passive capacitor in line protection for the win.
Yep
It’s like wearing protection cuz you never know when it might go boom 🙄😅

@blakebrockhaus347 Understood.....thank you....much appreciated
Blake knows his stuff.
I always put in a 10 to 20 mfd cap in series to protect against pops, or dc spikes that could occur.
I will be doing that in the future.

Switches are fun until someone/something gets hurt. 😉
The struggle is real.
@@DIYAudioGuy thanks 4 playin' along. 😄
Mids and tweets look awesome! I like tweeters with big ferrite motors, but I'd put a set of those puppies in my car.
You live, you learn. And then you upgrade 👍

I was getting some kind of whine, it went away when I replaced the head unit. I wonder what the problem was.
@@DIYAudioGuy Bad internal electrics. Poor bonding.

You only need around 10-25 watts rms for a good brand tweeter
I’ve got a 3rd Gen Ram as well. Do you prefer having the tweets in the dash vs having them in kicks?
I like them on the dash mounted in a pod.
Haha I'm surprised to hear DIY audio guy mention Spanish harlem, shout out to Rebecca Pidgeon!
Tweeters cover the larger band vs mids or lows. Its hard to believe that people cheap out on, or completely skip Tweeters
People underestimate just how important they are.
Exceeded the x-max of the tweeters did you.

I did something similar to a pair of Dynaudio Tweeters and expensive lesson...But gotta learn...
Painful and expensive lesson.

You should get the GKEEMARS lever wire connectors
That’s how some tweets meet there end-wrong filter.
Tweeters should blend in with the music not be the loudest part of you system.
Will you be making a video with the ultimax ii's? Im curious how they hold up against competition

@@DIYAudioGuy done. I can't wait. Have watched a ton of your videos, good stuff!
Hello, how to i get to achieve a soft boomy ground shaking bass with less of my coil hiting its base
Not sure what to tell you, you may be throwing too much power at your subwoofer, you may be playing below the tuning frequency.
Went to savard site but couldn’t find the tweeter specs . Where to find?

Use plastic plugs instead of screws, tweeters dont move so plastic plugs are the best and they are easy to get up again...
My preference but with good enough mid speakers I don’t need tweeters at all. Those extremely high freqs at high volume just hurt the ears.
There's definitely a case to be made for a good 3-in mid-range up on the dash instead of tweeters.
better than Morel?
I've not personally done a side-by-side comparison so I can't tell you.
