So quick story, my last name is Crowe and the coach for the bills at the time was my great grandfather Clem Crowe. I just hoped I could see him in one of these clips. I thought it would be cool :)
Note that the stadium where the AAFC Bills played was not called War Memorial Stadium at this time --that name came along with the AFL Bills in the 1960s. Civic Stadium -- the original name for the venue -- also did not have a roof, as one can see from the scoreboard shots. The roof was also a later addition. As a kid, I attended an NFL pre-season game (or exhibition game, as they were then usually called) in September 1957, in the roofless stadium, between the Steelers and Lions. The quarterbacks were Bobby Lane and Ted Marchibroda.
Correct! My bad, that's been corrected. But even "Civic Stadium" wasn't supposed to be the original name! It was originally Roesch Memorial Stadium (after former Buffalo Mayor Charles Roesch, who passed away a year before the stadium opened), and (though its Wikipedia entry is incorrect on this) for a few moments in a council meeting in 1937, Grover Cleveland Stadium. (There was a whole political knickers-in-a-twist circumstance going on during the meeting.) When it opened, it was Civic Stadium, and was officially redesignated War Memorial Stadium on August 24, 1960 as the Bills hosted the Oakland Raiders in a preseason game.
Hell, the color and quality of this video is better than many I've seen from the early 2000s. Back in the day, the Brooklyn Dodgers were also a football team. I had no idea how much football has changed since its inception until I started reading up on it and seeing these videos. For a huge football fan, this stuff is priceless.
This Bills team would go on to lose to the Browns in the '48 AAFC Championship Game, 49-7. This '49 Yankee team was the only Yankee team in the 4 years of the AAFC that didn't make the post-season. They lost the AAFC Championship Game to the Cleveland Browns in both 1946 and 1947. In 1949 they lost a conference semi-final playoff game to the San Francisco 49ers, 17-7.
The original Buffalo Bill uniforms were silver/blue and based on the AAFC Bills uniforms. They changed to their present red, white & blue color scheme after a couple seasons into the AFL
Great run called back by Buddy Young, Bills kicking game this year might have been the worst in the modern era of pro football, they only attempted three filed goals, making one the entire season.
The Yankees ran the single wing. The Bills here are running the T formation. The Yankees were one of the better teams in the AAFC. They lost the championship game to the Browns in both '46 and '47. Both were tight, competitive games.
@@Ezra-es4ts Frommmmmmmm 1946 to 1949. They were owned by Dan Topping, who owned part of…wait for it…the baseball team. Wait until you hear about the Brooklyn Dodgers football team.
Asher Dossetter but the Jets are nothing these days. They only won 1 Super Bowl compared to the Giants 4 plus 4 NFL Championships prior to the Super Bowl. The Yankees were well managed and well respected. Imagine having the Yankees all year round except for Mid February & March. I can see it now, a World Series by the baseball squad & a Super Bowl by the football squad.

Thanks> My dad Lou Sossamon center #25 for the Yankees!
Abbie Sossamon so your dad was a football player
He’s a gamecock legend!
Wow! The best AAFC footage I've seen easily. Thanks for posting!
Thanks for the footage. The Bills color choice reminds me of the Lions. Was enjoyable to watch.
That is a beautiful piece of film.
Beautiful footage.
I just stumbled across this. This is absolutely MARVELOUS footage. Thank you for making it available!

This footage is fantastic. So rare

This is awesome footage. I wonder if the AAFC Bills copied the uniform design of the Detroit Lions, they look very similar.

i was at this game :)

Is the Yankees kicker Harvey Johnson the same guy who would later coach the AFL Bills?
Yes
Worst coach in NFL history
You playing the foozeball with your fancy foozeball friends? Bobby Boucher played in this game.
Tom Landry played on this Yankee team.
Tom Landry was a yankee?? BWAHHH
He came to the Yanks a year later
Was that the Single Wing? No wonder the Browns crushed everyone.

Since when were the Yankees a football team?!?!

Do you have any footage of the 1948 Bills at the New York Yankees or at Baltimore?
Nope, sorry.
I wish new york yanks where still in nfl
Well there are the Jets so it doesn't really matter.
I wish the Tonawanda Kardex were still in the nfl.

They have ties to the current Indianapolis Colts even though it's not recognized by the organization
Are you from Buffalo?
Go Bills!! Oh wait, wrong team.
Still the Buffalo Bills, ownership means nothing.
