Growing up in Chile, my Sunday mornings were an absolute gem watching tv, with one good show after another... Johny Quest, Banana Splits, Land of the Giants, Thunderbirds, and one or two others.

I'm still obsessed with LAND OF THE GIANTS at 60. I'm a fan of the original STAR TREK, but it's GIANTS that has the edge for me. The neat thing about it is that it avoided being topical in the TREK vein, which is why GIANTS hasn't dated and people all over the world can relate to it.

This was my favorite show when I was a little kid. I remember sitting on my dads lap in the early 70's and watching this with him. The visuals, the music, the large props were really exciting to my young mind. When I was in high school in the 80's it used to air in reruns on a local VHS channel right before Star Trek and I became and even bigger fan. So much so that I actually named our new family dog, Chipper, the name of Barry's dog on the show. Sure the FX look cheesy today, but as a young person they were thrilling and I loved it. I would LOVE this show to be rebooted today like NetFlix did with Lost in Space, another favorite. NetFlix.... are you listening???? :-)

"Land Of The Giants" was actually a better show than it ever got credit for being. Vastly superior, in my opinion, than the campy hit, "Lost In Space." It was more watchable than "The Invaders," but never as good as "Star Trek." Still, with today's better special effects, this is definitely a show they should think about remaking.

Part of the magic was that they never fully explained where the Spindrift landed, did they go through a wormhole to another part of the universe or to a completely different universe entirely?

Shame those shows never made it to five seasons. Would have loved to see The Invaders go the distance. The first season of Lost in Space was it's best, reminding me of Swiss Family Robinson. Time Tunnel was good too until it got to be too SciFi instead of Historical like it was in season 1.

It was overall better, but LiS had a much stronger relationship/bond between characters. That was powerful, kept it going in reruns and in people's hearts.

    • @anthonycrnkovich5241
      @anthonycrnkovich5241 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

LAND OF THE GIANTS is the coolest of Irwin Allen's shows. I love the spontaneity in the dialogue and how the characters interact. The friction dynamic between Gary Conway and Don Matheson is always good. It was progessive in showcasing a black actor in an important role, one of the few shows to do this at the time. It hasn't dated the way LOST IN SPACE has, opting for a more serious premise whereas LOST IN SPACE got sillier as it went on with Jonathan Harris, Billy Mumy and the Robot monopolizing the episodes.

I was a little kid when this show came out and I had seen it "suggested by TH-cam" to me and had to watch an episode.....funny it all came rushing back that I used to watch this show with my father!! But I actually forgot the name of it!! Seems one of the few things I have forgot from my childhood was this show....which is weird because I recall the names of old shows all the time like Wonderbug, Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, The Far Out Space Nuts, Salvage 1, and even another show nobody around me seems to recall Doctor Shrinker!! I also recall Bob Denver (Gilligan) was in a western called Dusty Trails that I would watch too, yet some how in my head....I lost this one and I used to watch it too!!! Hey I still even recall my dad's sky blue Ford Fairlane and my uncle's black on black GTO from around the time I was 4 years old in 1968-1969 and I remember the space launch and watching that with my father too!! In fact there are other shows from the time I remember and remember well from Dragnet, Adam 12, Petty Coat Junction, and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers!!

This show would be wonderful for a movie remake. The survival of a group of people only several inches tall in a world of gigantic size filled with giant people would make a great horror/adventure. Several of the little people could be expendable in the movie and shown being crushed to death by Giants or captured and taken away by Giants to be kept as family pets.

Irwin Allen never seemed to conclude his science fiction series, he left Steve Burton and Co to survive forever in the "Land of the Giants", Tony and Doug were left forever travelling through time and space in the "Time Tunnel" and the space family Robinson forever "Lost in Space". Allen was the master of unfinished science fiction serials.

But alas that would be tough to do, as the series was a product of the 60's in so many ways. I consider myself very fortunate to have grown up watching Irwin's production. They should do a reimagined / rebooted Land of the Giants series, much like the new Lost in Space show.
The series would put more emphasis on the totalitarian nature of the giants' world. They'd have a series-long arc centered around their plan to get home, as well as the secret underground resistance among the giants.
The setting for the show would be 2045, however, the giants' world would be more backward, the equivalent of ca. 1980-1990 in Earth standards.
Inspector Kobick would be a female character, who had to climb the ranks of the secret service, battling all the sexism and prejudices, hence, she is a truly hard boiled character, who learned how to be as cold and efficiently ruthless as possible. She is not someone you'd like to catch the wrong side of.

Thank you. I've always thought that if they did come back for season three three one of the things they could have done was have the Spindrift crew work with the underground and in exchange they would help the earthlings repair the Spindrift. In fact, there were some of the giants who helped the castaways in the past who would have made great supporting players.

Your plot points sound a bit 'woke' and agenda laden to me.
Look how that worked for the latest Star Wars and a host of other recent 'remakes'.
      Not well.
People have learnt to hate 'social justice' narratives shoved down their throat all the time.
Try to remember that the main appeal of these old programs was due to their escapism.

The magic of Practical Effects, not that i am down on CGI, but its soooooo overused, because it is cheap, in movies these days.

I watched Land Of The Giants when I was a kid. I remembered the show as quite scary because of the premise. I remember seeing the comic book(but I couldn’t read at the time).
Fast forward to the late 80’s, I was able to see Land Of The Giants on the USA network. USA was the go to network for watching old television shows as was Nickelodeon’s Nick A Night. Land Of The Giants would come on after Lost In Space. I watched as much as I could. As I began to understand what it was that scared me about the show when I first saw it, the parts about the fascist government scared me more than the giant creatures that occasionally appeared. I have read somewhere that a story about the Spindrift’s crew and passengers finally repairing the Spindrift and returning to Earth, only to discover that it was doomed to be destroyed. The passengers and crew board the Spindrift and return to the Land Of The Giants bringing other ships with them to escape. That story never came to fruition.
I am curious about the possibility of a remake of the series but I am skeptical about the execution. It is possible to do just about anything with the technology used in film production today, something that Irwin Allen would’ve taken a chance on if it were available back then.
Lost In Space was a great family show.
Land Of The Giants was a very dark adventure.
About Ron Howard’s appearance on Land Of The Giants. The episode was called Genius At Work. Howard was in a film called Village Of The Giants as a boy called Genius, who creates the substance that increases the size of animals and people. He does the same thing in this episode.

I'd love that if it were done right. However, most of the remakes of classic shows are garbage so I'm trying not to get my hopes up.

The house on the left of the brown 'mansion' (Time-stamp1:56) is the home of Sheriff Andy. The brown mansion was the 'haunted house' where the moonshiners nearly caused Barney Fife (Deputy Fife.., sorry, Barn), to die of fright.

In the novelization, which I read *MANY* years ago, the Spindrift was still operable. It made more sense.
Also, I recently read there are THREE novelizations, but I have yet to try to find the other two books.

I loved watching this as a kid. I seem to remember an episode where they go back in time to earth but are still tiny and they see themselves before they boarded the ship that sent them to the land of the giants. I think they were trying to prevent themselves from ever leaving earth. Am I imagining this or was it an actual episode?

While great scriptwriting was not something often found in any tv series produced by Irwin Allen, he could atleast be relied on to provide both fine art direction, and special effects that, for the most part, still look pretty awesome.

The show had two great credit music themes by John Williams, and a good opening episode, but it honestly bored me a great deal, the slow pacing, the mute Giants, the formula scripts. It didn't pay off on the dangerous situations.
