Steve! thank you for the invite, the water drop, the friendship, showing us how to get out on our bikes and all the hard work it takes to put these gems of videos together. I got bit by the bikepacking bug watching you and Tess so being able to do this trip was surreal on so many levels. The image of the Milky Way that night is still seared clearly in my brain ... right next to the memory of being serenaded by the bullfrog
I can certainly understand the "emotional roller coaster" on these special trips, been there many times. What a great feeling it is throughout, especially when you know your going i the right direction.
As a romanian riding most of the time mountain trails, I can't imagine being out in the desert riding on scorching hot weather with long finger gloves and the hood on. Painful to watch but the whole emotion that you offered to the viewers made up for that pain. Glad to have attended the party!
It might seem counter-intuitive but long sleeves of a light, thin, moisture wicking material keeps you cool in the desert. Better if its also UV protective. Getting baked by the desert sun is no fun.
I love your channel. This is my personal favorite video of yours so far. Well done. Great tips, perspective, and advice! I thank you for showing the realities of self-supported bikepacking.
Great stuff Steve!!! When I first discovered your channel and Tess’s DB channel I went back and watched all your bike packing, camping multitudes day adventures. Great way to show what you need and what it takes to bike pack!!! Another great video!!!! 👍👍👍💪💪
Very nice video, your faith in humanity is a refreshing perspective right now. You make many great observations, but the Robert Frost quote was perfect.
As always awsome video, content & trip. The Arizona South West heat is definitely not for me. Happy trails Keep the cranks cranking, tires turning, & smiles a grinning.
A 64oz single wall klean kanteen is perfect for the bottom of the downtube. I run that and a 3L bladder in a frame bag to keep my water weight low and central.
Great video and adventure! Been wanting to explore the western routes of sedona (past of Boynton Pass). You have some nice messages and reminders. Ride on 🤙🏼
A few more things. 1) We use hooded sun shirts to protect from the sun. I'll be doing a dedicated video on these, but in the mean time, here's a link to the shirt: bit.ly/38NdU1x 2 In my next video i'll go through some of the gear I used on this trip. 3) Here's a list of the most-used gear I take on most bikepacking trips: Quilt/Sleeping bag - bit.ly/3gLb6on Sleeping Pad - bit.ly/322NpUx Tent (when I use a tent)- bit.ly/2AS5qtw Tailwind electrolyte drink mix - bit.ly/38LVQVq Bike Frame Bags - bit.ly/327OWsw Ultralight puffy jacket - bit.ly/2Oe4wuj 4) I realize I didn't quite quote Robert Frost's poem perfectly, but you get the gist.
hardtail party it looks like a cool loop! I've done all the trails you featured in it- I would just be nervous with bikepacking gear on Mescal I think haha. I ordered some more stuff! Slowly but surely trying build up my supplies :) haven't had much time lately to devote to riding bc of work but I can't wait to give a bikepacking trip a try! I think it would be so fun and glad Tess is willing to get out there and play, too!
Great video, and I really appreciate you calling out Leave no Trace and talking about the graffiti. It always bugs me when I'm exploring and see trash or traces that people carelessly left behind.
We didn't film that this time, but I have other videos on my channel covering a lot of that. Stay tuned for tomorrow's video where we share some of our gear.
I like a 3 liter bladder in the bottom of the frame bag w/ drinking hose hook to the bars. I've busted bottles mounted almost anywhere & it's always happens a ways from a resupply. PS bikepacking.net is another good resource.
Fantastic, i never heard of your channel before but watched another video of somebody reviewing the Hardtail Party kit bag so that got me curious. Found your channel and really enjoyed watching your reviews and trips. Awesome content. Keep it up.
I'm glad you found I your way over, welcome to the party. Interesting. I didn't know about that video, good to know it's out there. It's a great bag. Thanks for watching.
I had several custom stem caps made for my friends and I that say "Enjoy the Ride" ....They're on our road bikes, but I intend to get a couple more made so we can put them on our Mtn bikes.
Yes, here: th-cam.com/video/Z2zpDw6eXk0/w-d-xo.html Tomorrow's video will cover some of the gear I brought on this particular trip. I've also got a few items linked in the first comment in the comments section here.
One time we were doing a big back country ride and we dropped some water in coolers since it was mid summer and really hot. The water was fine when we got there to refuel, but when we went back to get the coolers someone had stolen them =/
What do you think of it the Looney Bin bottle cage? What WTB seat is that? I am in the California desert & my last mtb ride I saw at least 4 snakes, 3 of the rattle and one which may have been some kids pets as it was a vibrant green, which I don't think is native to this part of the US. I like my plus bike, but your video has me thinking about trading my gavel/bike packing bike(with 29x2.2 tire setup) for a Salsa Fargo with a 100mm sus fork & 29x2.6 wheels. I prefer drop bars for bike packing personally, but thinking about trying the Jones bar or the Velo Orange Crazy bar on my Karate Monkey type bike. Have you tried or looked into those?
Hey Steve! Awesome video!! New to the channel, but have been catching up on your vids over the last two days and have enjoyed them. LOVE the hard tails!! I have a Trek Roscoe 8 on the way ( arriving December 😡 ) any thoughts? I haven't seen any of your reviews on that bike. Thanks for your time, and keep the vids coming 😎🤘
@@ocmtb9533 they're raiser to take the wheels off and on, but it's less stiff and I've seen the wheels slip out of the dropouts during hard pedalling. For a beginner who's never going to upgrade, it's fine, but if you're spending that much on a bike, I'd look for something with a 12mm thru axle.
I know you have mentioned it in another video, but can't remember which one, but what is that hoodie you wear? I hate sunscreen and would love to have a lightweight hoodie like that for long days in the saddle.
hardtail party ah. That sounds about right. I think I was going the other way. Loved the video! Never considers bikepacking but made me want to give it a try someday.
I slept in a bug net bivvy (from titanium goat) to keep snakes, terrantulas, and other critters out of my warm bag. In my next video I'll share some of the equipment I used.

The music with the flowers on your pack made it much more romantic
everything I do... I do it for you...
You put together a great video with good commentary. Well done!

It was cool watching that flower on the front bag wither throughout the trip
It doesn't take long for the sun to dry everything out here in Sedona.
What an awesome adventure!
Oh man this looks like a killer overnight trip!!
Awesome video. Thank you! This will help me know what to expect on the trail.
I did the ride earlier this week. Thanks again for the trail preview. We came prepared, and the ride was a success!
Thank you for your video! It gave me the courage to decide and go out there myself
Awesome! Let me know how it goes. I hope you have a great trip.
Dude wish I could be there with you guys thank you for sharing.

I think you'd love this loop,l. I'd be happy to help you modify it if you'd like to shorten the distance.

Can you go into detail about both your and Paul's bike setups, including bags, mounts & storage? Also the pros & cons of each?

Thanks for joining the premiere!
Awesome video thanks for doing these! We’ll be in Phoenix later this year and maybe I’ll be able to get out to Sedona for a ride.
"The vortex is right there" 🤣. Only in Sedona.
Great video! I appreciate the perspective! Have you done a video on you gear/bags you use?

Hey Steve, can you tell us what hoody you're wearing? I love that the hood is big enough to go all the way over the helmet
I put a link in my video desceiptions
Very cool thanks is camping allowed in the entire Sedona backcountry?
No, you have to do your research. We see millions of tourist each year, and it's essential that people know where camping is allowed.
Thanks for sharing! What handlebar is that?
It's the stock Marin bar that comes on the pine mtn 2
wow. very cool! I'm curious, what hoodies are you guys wearing? It seems like it would be too hot for a long sleeve hoodie, but clearly it's not.
I'll be doing a dedicated video on my hoodies. Stay tuned.

I'm not crazy about the 141qr hubs/wheels, but otherwise it's a decent first bike.
Is it just not being able to upgrade as easy? Still new to the MTB world, so trying to get as much knowledge as possible 😎

@@hardtailparty Thanks for the info! Was also looking at the Salsa Timberjack, and Marin Sant Quinton 2
See my video where i compare marin's bikes. I think you'll learn a lot. I save personalized bike consultation, for my patrons.
I know you have mentioned it in another video, but can't remember which one, but what is that hoodie you wear? I hate sunscreen and would love to have a lightweight hoodie like that for long days in the saddle.

Are those the ergon GE grips? They look a bit different than the ones you reviewed recently.
These are ergon GA2 fat grips. I'll talk about them in my upcoming pine mountain 2 review.
party cool, thanks.
It’s funny that the “extreme” route is easier than the “difficult” one.
It depends on which direction you ride it. The extreme route has more exposure and a super tough climb to get out
hardtail party ah. That sounds about right. I think I was going the other way. Loved the video! Never considers bikepacking but made me want to give it a try someday.
You're right. Going the other direction, the "extreme" section is a lot easier. Bikepacking is fantastic, I highly recommend giving it a go.
Hey man quick question. I can never find the right pressure, what would you recommend for 29x2.6 if im a very light rider, like 120lbs?
it depends on so many things. If your rim is the 35mm wide inner (what I recommend for 2.6s), try anywhere from 16-22 psi.
mm@@hardtailparty Oh they're 29mm... I tried around 15psi but I burped it once....
Nice vid 👍do you sleep in a bivvy or fly net or just on a sleeping mat? I'd be a bit worried about snakes out n about at night.
I slept in a bug net bivvy (from titanium goat) to keep snakes, terrantulas, and other critters out of my warm bag. In my next video I'll share some of the equipment I used.
Hey Steve I have a question about a fork and wheelset for a RSD Middle Child. I can send you a payment for your time.
Thanks!
Sure. Patreon.com/hardtailparty
What hoody is this? I want something like that :D
See the first comment here. Video coming soon
I agree. Most people are good. Especially here in Montana.
Are you guys wearing hoods to keep the sun off your necks? Odd sight to someone from a colder country
Yes. Link in the first comment.
Great video, Steve! I wanna get up to flag to do both loops on bikepacking.com in that area. Arizona is the bees knees.
Me too
Yup. I hate snakes. In Michigan we have Massasauga rattlers. Probably see an alien before you see one.
Hey why do you wear a sweater most of the time?.... and I know I know stupid question?
Sun protection. It's not a sweater. It's a sun shirt meant to block the sun. It's very thin and lightweight. Here's a link to it: @t
hardtail party exactly what I thought duh...lol thanks man your videos are spot on and your reviews are unbiased
@@hardtailparty you have a link for those?
Yes, see my first post here.
