A ewe lambed on Friday night, and I had a feeling she was a bit leery of nursing her newborns (that she loved BTW)...
It doesn't happen often, but when it does... you try EVERYTHING to convince a ewe to feed her lambs.
So in this video, you get to see first hand how frustrating, exciting, then back to irritating it can be... A rollercoaster of emotion.

It is so precious when they try to find the teets for the first time. They nudge legs, belly, feet, face even other moms. And all the while their cute little tails are wagging like crazy😃 GOTTA LOVE IT!!!❤️❣️❤️
When goats are getting milked, people tie the hind legs back. Perhaps that might help.

I came to say the same thing
That would make sense for a goat getting milked, because they’re probably on a stand or something, and most likely not as big or strong as a sheep. I could see it being difficult to find a safe place for Sandi to tie the ewes legs down in the tiny pen. Also, the ewe might just get used to not being able to kick, so when ever Sandi decides to stop tying her legs, the ewe night just go right back to kicking. I think that if she just never ties the legs down, and never gives up, the ewe will soon give up on kicking. Just can’t stop training. Anyway, those or my thoughts 😂
I was gonna say that hobbles are in order. She’d only kick me once and then hobbles on the back feet for feedings. Hobbles tie the legs to each other you don’t have to tie to a fence or down to something else. it just keeps them from raising the legs to kick.
Was thinking the same thing or doing something similar.
Hi Sandy, I think her teats are hurting. For cows we normally use warm water and a damp cloth and press it gently on her teats. Continue do that for 2 days and she should be fine

When you said her colostrum was really thick, it brought back memories of feeding my son for the first three days of his life. Thick milk hurts. Getting too full hurts. Another thing I remember is once I'd got past the thick milk stage it was fine. Seriously three days of tears 😭 then I discovered an electronic pump. Al at lumnah acres on TH-cam has this for his goats, he also has a leg rope on a milking station to stop the kicking. I understand totally your frustration with a little human not a sheep but the principles are pretty much all about the feeding. Might make your day a little easier 😉 I hope this helps a little
Never heard of a thick milk problem but too much milk hurts pretty bad. I would have happily fed a second baby just to get rid of the feeling of large stones under my skin.
I was wondering if it was painful for the mom for some reason which might explain her behavior
That's what I was thinking, I know that the Udderly EZ hand pumps can be used for sheep to pump and fill bottles for bottle babies, perhaps something to relieve all the bag pressure. poor mama...
@@mamabear6990 for the first couple of weeks the first few minutes was agonising I did have enough milk to be considered a dairy cow and just the one baby. It was only when I discovered the pump helped that I noticed the first couple of minutes the milk was thicker and the consistency changed a few minutes in. I was told by the midwife it was an issue with let down, and nothing to worry about, but yeah that ewe I sympathize but stick with it mamma it gets better
another youtube site is Weed 'em & Reap, (the Lumnahs got one of their mini-goats from them) they also have a "kicking goat" on the milking stand, only kicking with her front feet so they created comfy-looking hobbles to tie to the stand so she'd stop kicking the milk bucket every time they tried to milk her. I believe the goat quickly got used to being milked after that. hope that helps.
Hobble those back legs. Halter her, and hobble the back legs - she’s probably just a little overly sensitive in the bag due to all the swelling and engorgement, and might be fighting the feeling of her milk letting down. She may or may not ever allow them to feed normally, so it may just be up to you and how long you’re willing to halter and hobble for feeds.
We had a goat who was like this, and she never did stop doing it and once the colostrum was finished and her milk fully came in, we ended up having to switch them out to bottles. When she did it again with her next freshening, we ended up deciding to not breed her again and she was eventually sold as a pet to some neighbours.
She might just have tender teets.
How does one hobble a ewe's back legs? Do you mean actually breaking them?
@@Dirty_Squirrell 😳 No! Jeez. Hobbling means tie the front or back legs together pretty closely..at least, that’s what it means for horses..
In this situation, I think the suggestion means tying one of the hind leg maybe either extended or bent up somehow.. granted I’m not a sheep farmer so I’d need to google to confirm exactly..but makes sense if the ewe keeps ‘blocking’ her baby from drinking..
@@Dirty_Squirrell no, it's à specific way of tying one legTo thé another so if she kicks again, it hurts Her more than it off balances Her. She can choose To stand quietly with no pain, or kick and hurt herself; she'll figure it out fast.

We had a new momma do the same thing, we halter them, tie close to the fence, hobble one foot back and the twins did great! And momma came around too! Lol good luck

Milk her into the bottle. Then water that down with some of the artificial colostrum and give THAT TO THE LAMBS!

That mama that was kicking her lambs, She has a sore udder and condensed milk. I would have rubber her udder with a warm wet rag to help her let down. First-timers sometimes do that and they just need extra help to get the milk flowing. I had a doe do this and I just had to get the colostrum out and then she produced normal milk.

You have the patience of a saint. She would've had the big X on her back and the milk machine would've had 2 new customers! Like you said with that mom that beat her lamb up last group, you can't do that every time she lambs. Imagine having to do that in the middle of heavy lambing.

I love your lambing voice! It shows that it never gets old for you, you love your lambs every time. I also love the "censor lamb", so cute but it baffles me because the birth is fine with me, it's the cleaning off that is gross to me.

I'm wondering if you can use milking straps for mom's back legs. That keeps ours from kicking while we milk.

Lots of comments saying to tie her feet. And I agree, maybe check for udder discomfort or pain but definitely tie her legs until she realizes the babies help with Engorgement.

I have a habit of spoiling animals, so my solution would be to give Mom a treat like an apple or something while the lambs are feeding and petting her to make it a positive experience. Maybe put some sugar on the teets for the lambs as well. See..I can't help myself.
Same. Husband always call me out on it. Hate tying mama up but we have the milk machine so it’s a bit easier for us. Also I remember feeling of having swollen tits and thick milk that hurt.
I put sugaf on a cow's utter once to get a calf to graft. Once I ket her out of the stanchion, she gallooed with the calves past my husband. He yelled, "Calm down sugar tits!" It's so rude, but so funny! I think of it every time I see an animal nurse :D
Great that you're trying to have her help you're also helping her so she doesn't get mastitis
Halter and hobbies over the hock, one cotton rope or mule tape figure 8 over the hock -go past her backside utter -figure 8 over the hock .
assuming this is a first time mom. a mild sedative that might relax her and ease any pain she is experiencing. also, once she is allowing them to feed, gentle release the halter tie so she goes from forced nursing to free nursing.
A sedative might affect the lambs. A trick an old farmer I knew used was to give kicking cow moms a beer , that might work for an ewe (or a half beer, or a quarter; sheep are small).

my dad always tired one leg back, so she can't kick them, as well tiring her head so she won't move.

Is there any chance that a ewe who doesn’t feed her lambs will start having her milk dry up?its almost like you have to tie her kicking leg back towards the fence too! She’s stubborn !
Yeah she would get mastitis 😕 but if u were to leave it before the lambs drink the colostrum her udder could explode! ☹ But once the lambs drink the colostrum if it left it'll just dry up! 😀😅

@@len1045678 basicly in a cow/sheep's udder (teats) theres milk obviously so sometimes if the milk goes bad or the calf or lamb don't drink it it will clog up and go bad it's almost like when your milk gets curdled usually when this happens u can't use that side of the udder anymore

Her colostrum was really thick? She may be developing mastitis from a partially clogged duct. Start treating her for it and try to milk some of it out of her to open up those ducts, even if you have to tie her up to do it. Her udder may already be painful
All I could think about with that one lamb was - oh aren't you so full and want relief? I was thinking about us humans and what a relief it is when our babies nurse

I had ewes like her, they kick because it hurts. I have a cream that I put on , about a week later they stop kicking

Sandi, the ewe needs straps to secure her back legs. I have watched goat owners do this when they are trying to milk a kicking goat.

I know this is two years late, but if anyone else is having issues with them kicking, something I found helpful when milking goats who wanted to kick: lift their front hoof on the side they want to kick. They can't balance on that side if they try to lift the back hoof, and they have a harder time pulling the front leg out of your grip than the back hoof.
Is the kicking ewe a 1st time mom or possibly having discomfort in her teets?

Tie both back and front legs. Front ones tied to the area where the halter is attached and back ones to the back of the pen. So she's standing, but shes splayed so she cannot kick with any legs. It may be painful to nurse, but keep attempting before the lambs give up. Hugs from Halifax
An old shepherd told me when I started in sheep that too stop the ewe from kicking you press (elbow, forearm, knee, etc.) Just in front of the hip after stretching the leg back a bit. The press keeps her from flexing the joint forward to kick but does no harm.
A stanchion is less desirable but until you Get the hoses dur the milk machine, it may be your option.

Is there anything you CANT do? We are not farmers but retired (she) Nurse and (me) Graphic Designer. I was on a sheep farm when I was about 7 years old (about 1941) Near Port Elizabeth, South Africa. I watched a farmer pick up a sheep and drop him into a Sheep Dip ramp. Thats my Whole experience with sheep. All I know about sheep is Jesus is the great Shepherd and I am His sheep. Sandi, I don’t know if you read anything I write or not, but just Incase you do I want to say I love you as a person and as a shepherd! I love that you love your sheep and how you take care of them. I think you take wonderful care of them and I like that you help them when they are lambing because they need you. Please don’t stop helping them or stop being you because of others. Be yourself, that’s what makes you great and wonderful! Others who want you to change are jealous and controlling and when you change yourself for them, they win, and you lose.
I just wanted to say that because I know you struggle in that area and I just want to encourage you to be you.

Hi Sandi, we have struggled with 'kickers' too. We built a corner head stanchion and tie one back leg back. It's not ideal but it does the trick. It is so interesting that many commenters are saying,"Tie that leg up pronto!" Only 1 person mentioned training the ewe with creating a more positive association towards nursing. A few mentioned possible pain/problems with her udder. Hobbling works, but is it kind? If I had pain or fear around a necessary task, I wouldn't want to be literally tied down to fix it.
OR given the big slaughterhouse X. I thought we're all here because we adore these sheep. I continue to watch because Sandi cares about their quality of life. She has put her love, energy, time, and money into raising this ewe.
In the long run "Kicky" could produce many more lambs, so training could be worth it.
Sometimes with farming it is not all pretty pink roses !!
The important thing atm is to get the colostrum into the lambs so as they can survive, And the gratitude can come later !! As the lambs are the whole principal behind this endeavour !!

This sounds nice but I don't think it's realistic. Maybe for a small hobby farm with more time, but not someone like sandy who has a lot of animals to care for and probably doesn't have the time to attempt to train individual sheep during lambing, no.
I don't think having their legs tied is especially unkind, it's pretty standard practice in milking goats while they are learning not to kick the milk bucket over, and the animals really don't show any especially adverse reactions to it.
I'm totally bummed. One of the main reasons I watch your channel is for the full/ live births.

Sandi you need some hobles for her and i also wonder about subclinical mastitis with her. Is she a ff. But hobles will work wonders.
hey Sandi, curious as to whether you will breed from the ewe who was being a pain about feeding her lambs again? Or do ewes who misbehave after lambing not get a second chance to redeem themselves like those who don't catch the first time when bred? We also tie our ewes legs into a figure of eight type knot, which will prevent her from kicking as she won' be able to move one leg far enough to do that. Hope this helps :) You're doing a brill jobs and the lambs are SO cute!!

@@mophomanners an unproductive ewe isn't worth the time or money to feed. Sandi runs a working farm, it's her livelihood. She can't afford to keep a bum animal.

I've seen plenty of farms do this for nanny/first timers/ death of a mum, purposes till she takes them no harm whatsoever. Better then a loss in life when you put so much effort.
Edit: great husbandry skills 😷👍🐑 (look up nanny shutes) might get some ideas...

My friends Maiden Mare would kick the foal when it tried to feed. She tied the Mare's Leg up, turning the mare into a tripod. After two or three days of this the new Mom accepted her foal eating. No problems whatsoever when she had her second foal 2 years later

That's my thoughts, shes just uncomfortable and them rooting is painful, maybe she realizes the relief once they start drinking... but I'd tie her legs up, perhaps you could squeeze some out of her into a bottle and freeze for emergencies, just so shes relieved for now
I was going say, maybe there's pain in her udder? If she's not rejecting the lambs, what else could it be?
This is a hard one to figure out. I know that sometimes we put a leather hobble on cows but I don't know if they do that for ewes? It doesn't hurt.

@@SR3272 engorgment is VERY painful, so is mastitis, the milking might hurt too if everything is swollen enough but otherwise it should be painless
When I have had that problem I tie the back legs & hand milk a little so that it was on the teat making easier for the lambs to find it. I eventually had to make hobbles for my one ewe. The first 48 hours after every lambing. Otherwise she was a great mom, excellent lambs, and wonderful ewe.

I’ve seen other sheep farmers do just as you were suggesting. I’ve seen them left for up to a week to ensure the ewe allows nursing. Big fat “X” on that ewe. I love your videos with the sunrise.
