    The Unicorn cut?! I have to laugh! Back in the very early seventies, my friend and I decided to Shag our own hair. We did exactly what you said, or rather she did because she went first. When I saw her finished product, I said oh hell no I'm not doing that to my hair!! She was really mad at me for not going through with the deal, but my hair is very curly, as opposed to hers, and I knew it was going to be a nightmare for me, plus her hair looked absolutely terrible! I did end up paying for a shag haircut not long after that, and it was a total disaster. But I know it would have been a whole lot worse if I had done that unicorn cut when my friend did hers. So 50 years later, and nothing has changed! People still giving themselves bad home haircuts!

      My older sister was a hairdresser and I was always around for her to practice on. I loved visiting her in the salon and feel like I grew up there. Later I met my bestie Rohan, who is also a hairdresser, and he gave me the haircut that changed my life. I never really knew I had curls until that haircut. He always says I inspire him with my styling though (which is very kind of him) and I've also learnt so much through trial and error. My philosophy is that beauty should be fun and I'm super lazy so I like things to be quick too 😉 xx

      It's *awesome* when you can find someone who knows their way around curly hair with a razor!
      My very best haircut was by an Aveda hairdresser at a hair class for a salon. He knew exactly how to work with my hair, and only used the razor around the crown. It even grew out beautifully. And yup, he had curly hair, too. He got it.
      Annnnd, the very worst cut I've had was three months later, with a woman at the salon who apparently slept during that class. We're talkin' weed wacker levels of hackery.
      So happy you found someone who understand how to use a razor!! That is worth its weight in gold. I think from now on, I'm going to call and ask "Which hairdresser has and wears her hair curly?" I'm sorry, but taking a few classes about curly hair just doesn't cut it.
      Hehehe, get it...cut it? :D

    I am a hairstylist with 30 years of experience. I also have natural curly hair. I let a stylist cut my hair with a razor and I found I would never have a razor to my hair again unless I was having a short hair cut. I will never have thinning shears cut on my hair either. I found that with my coarse hair that a razor and thinning shears only caused more spit ends. Find a hairstylist that has natural curly hair because they have a clue as to how to cut your hair.

    Hi Christina, I've just found your fab channel and wanted to send a hello & ask a question from here in the UK. I used to have hair very similar to yours, but unfortunately, a combination of menopause and some very serious health issues, has meant that my once super-thick, very curly hair has lost its volume &, more importantly, my curls have vanished. It really is like a different head of hair. I was a typical red-headed pre-raphaelite curly girl, now my hair is limp and pretty straight. I had it cut to just above shoulder length in the hope that less weight would give me some semblance of curl, but it hasn't worked, & I miss my hair! I realise you're a thousand years younger than me, I'm the grand old age of 53, but I just wondered, with your knowledge and contacts with hairdressers who understand curls, whether you knew of any way I could restore at least a little of my former curliness? I have done some research into hair changes in menopause, & apparently, it's not uncommon for curly hair to become straight & vice versa, but I'm stubborn and don't want to give up just yet. Thanks for the most interesting videos, I'm very glad I stumbled across your channel. Yolanda x

      Thanks Yolanda! It's true that hormone changes can take a huge toll on our hair. Hope you're doing ok now. Your hair can recover, but it can take a long time. I'd check with your doctor but hair supplements (like Viviscal) can help, and massage your scalp every day. It feels great but it can help your hair to grow too. Good luck xx

    You are so right about thinning scissors. I asked for a hairdresser with curly hair experience and she gave me one of the worst haircuts I've ever had. It took months to grow the style out but left an even longer mistrust of all hairstylist. When I finally went back to a different salon I once again left with my very frizzy but a least with longer layers. I had my best cut and style with a male stylist. I mentioned my other disasters and he couldn't believe a senior stylist did what she did.

    I have 2b/c hair which I need to have trimmed very soon. I've been getting cut in the 'U' shape which has worked best for my curly hair type, but the stylist has used thinning shears to thin out the bulk as my hair is extremely coarse and thick. I would like to avoid having that done as it leaves too many fuzzy pieces sticking out everywhere, but otherwise what is the best way to thin out thick hair? Don't want too much thinning out just enough to take away the bulk. Thanks!

    Definitely it’s about learning your hair patterns for types of hair cuts! I used to go for the V cut in my teens but it wasn’t good for my hair as the underneath ends up sitting straighter and the short parts of my hair (and the parts closer to my face) were much more curly, so it would look like a weird long curl mullet 😝

    I do a home-cut. I have fingertip length wavy/curly hair. I make a ponytail on the top of my head and cut a bit off, on dry, end of the week (pre-wash) hair, when my waves have sagged out and I can easily brush through it. My last trim was November 2016, when I was hip length. I grew it out to fingertip in about 2 years. I got the idea for the cut from a book called, Haircutting for dummies". There's another technique in there, and that is making a ponytail on the top of your head and cutting a chunk off. I prefer the other way. I have a deep V and layers all the way from hip to fingertip. It really shines on hair that is textured. I think Lana Summer here on YT has that same cut, but she has much tighter curls. She also has a video on it. These cuts aren't bad, but you have to do them on hair that is *at least* bra strap to waist length. Shorter and you'll have 80s rocker dude vibes. ;)

    • @Hairromance
      @Hairromance  5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I won't laugh - the same thing happened to me! It's fine to bring in your own products and I'd explain it to your hairdresser during your consultation. I assume you're avoiding silicones so make sure they don't use any extra prods when styling. But if they do, don't worry, you can just shampoo and you'll be fine to restyle when you get home. Oh and even if your hairdresser understands, just check with other salon staff as they can be really busy and may use something different at the basin if you don't remind them. Good luck! x

      I've been doing this for years as sulfate shampoos (and any minty ones) irritated my scalp. Don't come near me with mint! I never encountered any issues. Or I would ask them nicely to not use these things.

      I always bring my own hair products to the salon, OR I wash my hair at home and then go for a cut. I'm particular about what is put into my hair, and wouldn't expect the salon to carry and use exactly what I use. I don't worry about them being offended (though they never have been), because it is MY hair!

    Ive got a question - I burnt the 🤬 out of my hair a year ago using dry shampoo before I used a straightener. Is there a difference in a straightener & a curling wand as far as the risk of burning hair??? I will note that my straightener was at the highest temp at the time... Thanks in advance if you respond! I just found you today & am IN LOVE with your hair & SO GRATEFUL I found you!!! ❤️ I've got a LOT to learn! Thanks for the videos!! ❤️ curly hair love from west palm beach FL ❤️😉

    • @Hairromance
      @Hairromance  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Stephanie! Great question and usually straighteners are higher heat and also a little more damaging as your hair is sandwiched between two plates. With a curling wand you only have heat coming from one side of the hair so it's a little more gentle.
      I've been there and burnt off half my hair when I was obsessed with my straightener. It takes time but your hair will recover and grow back 💛💛💛

    I have had bad experiences with thinning shears, aka texturizing shears. Just recently had my hair color done and this new hairdresser insisted it would be ok to use them! Didn’t let her cut my hair🤣. Had a dry Devacurl cut done a couple of weeks ago. Already don’t like how it looks, seemed ok at the salon but now it’s looking uneven and weird. Now I don’t know what to do 😱. Before this haircut I was going to someone else who cut my hair wet. I’m so confused 🤷🏻‍♀️

I'd be so upset to have spent all that money to only NOT love my hair, which I saw coming, so I cancelled. My expectations were just too high for anyone to match. I'll stick with my wet haircut. I don't have the thick spiral curls anyway. I just ordered a few Deva products, which I am so far, very happy with and saved a bundle!!

    I use a Creaclip on dry hair and I do not straighten my hair ever before cutting. I only do a long layer and then a second layer of just my crown of my head and I cut this 1 inch shorter than the previous layer. My cut comes out perfect. It would be very expensive for me to get this kind of a cut from a stylist in a salon. Most stylists either could not or will not give me this kind of layered cut. The cut would be u uneven and I would have to go home and recut my hair to make it even. Easier to just use the Creaclip!!

    In a pinch I'll do the unicorn cut at home...but I don't cut at the base of the ponytail. No no no I didn't even know that's what people did, it seems so obvious to me that cutting THAT short would look so horrible. No I put my freshly washed and combed hair into a unicorn ponytail, then I add a second elastic closer to the ends, at whatever length I want to remove. So I only cut off a couple inches. And I only do this if I really need a trim but am too lazy or can't afford to go to a salon that month. It does the job, but isn't the absolute best option for my hair, so I try to only do a unicorn trim once between salon visits.

    Hi Christina! I just saw this last night and I have a question I hope you would answer. I have fine, curly/wavy hair and I need to know if when having my hair in layers (just above shoulder length at this time) can these layers start at my cheekbone area? So many of the stylist say that I can't do that because it will curl up too much. I've decided at age 59, to finally embrace my curly hair. It's not coarse and it's not thick and not an even curl all around, probably more wavy with curls (not sure if that makes sense). Anyhooo, my daughter is a hairstylist but definitely doesn't cut a lot of curly hair so I don't mind her learning on my hair (she's been doing hair now for about 5 years - she's 26 now). Yes she has used that razor thing on my hair too which I thought was ok. I will going forward ask her not to use it but I keep telling her and many others who have in the past where I want my layers to start and all have fought me on it. So, Is it okay to start my layers at my cheekbone to help my hair curl better? (I usually NEVER use a hairdryer any more, just don't want to deal with it. Please advise if you can. Sorry for the lengthy comment. Thank you

      A little late, but I've got fine, thin curly hair. I've done layers "all over" for years and always have my shortest start at cheek bones. When short, my hair doesn't kink up as much. So those short pieces end up a little more relaxed and looser waves. The layers end up creating a round shape around my face...no "triangle" head etc. I don't see why your curls would have any issues if your layers started at your cheekbones...just think about how your curls react at various lengths and how would they all flow together with the end cut

    I have only just started looking into how to let my natural wave shine as it's naturally so frizzy if I do nothing with it. My hair dresser thins my hair with those thinning scissors all the time!! She says it's to take some of the weight out... I thought by using these scissors it would be making my hair less triangle shaped. What's a better way to prevent that?

    • @longyarn4288

      Tell her you want to grow it out and you don't want her to use the thinning scissors so that it'll all be one length when you try a new style. Then for the next several visits you tell her "Just clean up the ends, I haven't decided on my new style yet!" You could also have her watch this video with you. Or get her a copy of that Curly Girl method book. Or go to NaturallyCurly.com or Ouidad.com and look for recommended hairdressers in your area, and get a new HD! Best of luck to you!
