    Excellent look at the interface between the rider, ground and the bike. The Central Nervous System can be trained using drills on and off the bike to tune the efferent and afferent pathways via input and output of the brain with each gross and fine motor movement. More riders can also tune their balance using a regular bike with static drills. Other drills can be done with basic movements from gymnastics. Again, thank you for another high quality video.

    It always goes back to trials! Having seen what some basic trials riding can do for the average rider in my little riding group, I could not agree more. Picked up a used trials bike last fall and the difference it has already made in my technical riding makes me wish I had bought one decades ago.

    In order to change direction, speed up or slow down you have to UNBALANCE. WHen you are riding straight down a flat road you have "balanced" al of the forces acting upon you and the bike. To change direction you have to upset that "balance of forces" and then "re-balance" in the new direction. The best trials riders are always balanced while unbalanced ;)

    I'm still working on the basics of static balance. There is much in this video to advance beyond those basics if I ever master them. I'm in the habit of sticking a leg out off the peg when losing balance, mostly because I'm trying to copy what I see better riders doing. Now I understand why I'm having to put a foot down every time I do it.

  • @SCakey
    @SCakey ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Even on my street bikes I go with the "try to never put a foot down" mentality. I'll be at stoplights on my pegs trying to keep the bike balanced at a stop. Good practice to me plus I figure me standing on the bike makes me even more obvious to cars at a stoplight.

    I dont do hard enduro, I do trials this last few years...............great coaching here for trials riders, just ignore what/type bike you ride :) Static balance is great, dynamic balance is critical. Static balance no hands is great for opposing peg weight training.................. well done Sir, super job as always !!

    Rich and Marc this whole video series has been amazing for me as a new rider!
    All I have been doing is practicing your techniques. My progression riding moto is 100% noticeable!
    I keep tossing out my legs for counter balance on the moto. 20+ years of bicycle observed trials riding - my natural instinct is to toss a leg to counter. I lean my body right, my left leg is out and bars turn to the left. My trials bicycle weighs 22lbs, the moto weighs 300lbs and has suspension. Ill start practicing not tossing my leg to counter on the bike.
    I'd like some help figuring out maximizing my technique using the bikes suspension in unison with clutch/brake/throttle/body language.
    Micro/Macro you see it with your riding. The thousands of micro muscle fastness- that's a lifetime of practice and muscle memory.
    Thank you teaching us mere mortals how to learn!

    Hi, I'm from India, learning so much from you. I have an adventure bike of 200 kgs. Trying hard to master static balance. Is it possible to stand still on flat ground? Now I only able to do it with a spare tyre applied on the front tyre of my bike.

  • @DenisElpashev
    @DenisElpashev ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Great point!
    The problem is that proper weighting of the pegs for balance should be done more precisely and with some more anticipation so it's really hard to maintain balance this way. On the other hand, counterbalancing allows you to make bigger and faster corrections of your already off-balance position, that's why it's feels more natural to do so...
    Now thanks to your brilliant explanation, it's time to learn to do it the right way, even if it feels harder at the beginning :)

    • @IRCTireUSAMoto
      @IRCTireUSAMoto  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You’re absolutely right! I think in the extreme cases counter balance with the leg off definitely works! I’ve just found avoiding it for longer is a slightly better approach for maintaining a straight and true line.
      Thanks for watching!!

      @@IRCTireUSAMoto First off, your channel is REALLY the best out there explaining driving technique!
      I immediately recognized myself, as I'm using the "leg out"-counter balance from time to time, but mostly, because I screwed up during a difficult hillclip, lost balance in the first place, had to sit down in order to avoid a crash and THEN quickly throw a leg out, to get on the pegs and in a standing position once again.
      Clearly not a good habit AND a fitness issue I think....

  • @bexupnorth
    @bexupnorth ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Just brilliant, I've always struggled with static balance and actually find it very difficult to lift a foot off when already falling. Now I know why and I won't try to do it!

  • @Ewmcdona
    @Ewmcdona ปีที่แล้ว +1

    In fact we need a 10+min video on how exactly static balance works;
    *I suspect in static balance you turn into the direction you're falling, while weighting the opposite peg (not sticking leg out)*
    Because at speed you push left - to fall left - to veer left - and finally turn left to get the bike back under you;
    But at some point like slow riding this is opposite - you turn where you want to go (not away from where you want to go like at speed)

    • @Ewmcdona
      @Ewmcdona ปีที่แล้ว

      And to make this go quicker, I'm trying static balance with bike near the wall on one side, and stand on other; so I get many more smaller adjustment practices in a session

    A good way to feel how weight on the foot peg changes balance is to try getting on the bike by stepping on the peg on your side and then throwing your leg over. You will quickly see how much you need to lean the bike away from you.

    Thanks for another awesome instructional video. Question though-- I see all the top pro trials riders extend their legs to the side to maintain balance. While I know those guys operate at an entirely other level and it makes little sense to compare what they do to what I do, I was just curious. If weighting pegs is more effective than throwing a leg out... why do they do the latter?

    • @IRCTireUSAMoto
      @IRCTireUSAMoto  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes the leg out is absolutely effective. I use it all the time. That’s being said I believe trying hold off and keeping the pegs weighted as long as possible is the best approach for your understanding of balance.

    Are there any balance exercises that you could recommend to be done without a bike, at home?

    • @rider65
      @rider65 ปีที่แล้ว

      One-legged balance drills. Do it while in the shower, brushing teeth, washing dishes ect...
      or keep the feet close together (touching) Yoga practice has some good body balance drills as well.
      Keep your core and lower body strong, this is crucial for the physical side of balance.
      Walk a balance beam (a line on the ground or elevated)
      Mentally, practice spatial judgement skills; Walking-running through narrow passages.
      Quick vision drills from background to foreground, repeatedly.
      Juggling. (both mental & physical)
      You could practice tai chi, or other types of disciplines.
      So many more as well...
