That was amazing. The uncut version, just real life honesty. Failing is part of the game, perseverance is key. We all know that, but seeing a top rider go through that process... Very inspiring.
love it! The fear at my age is not so much failing (well it is) but actually failing and breaking some bones. But the whole start small and work up you speak of is absolutely crucial. I just built a small enduro obstacle skills course on my property and at first it really messed with me but now it's actually getting easy. Made a vid on it to. I really like the mic in the helmet as your vid dude does the filming. Really great stuff but my wife says I need to start acting my age. Almost 58 and still riding hard.
I pushed too hard trying to learn and ended up with a broken neck. The fear is real. It's all about acceptable risk given your particular skill level and balancing that with creating situations that make you just uncomfortable to learn and not break yourself. Well, never been good at that.
I’ll never forget what you said one time when someone asked how you “crash” so well. You said “because I’ve crashed more than you have tried”. You have a gift for explaining all that is involved in becoming great on a dirt bike. In one of your videos you said something that I had often told people about talent. When you said it I said out loud “yes, exactly!” I’ve spent 40 years playing drums and made my living doing it for a lot of those years. I always chuckled when people said, “man I don’t know how you do that, I tried once and I just couldn’t do anything” I say, “well I couldn’t either when I was 12 and grabbed sticks for the first time!”😂 I don’t believe much in “talent”. Let me clarify. The “talent” someone appears to have is something inside them that makes them WILLING to put the hours and hours and hours of time into any activity to make it look like it came easy. Are there exceptions? Of course but I guarantee there are very few. If you investigate the “exceptions” you will still find hours, days and years of time spent honing a skill.
Perfect!! I also don’t believe in talent! That tends to ruffle a few feathers but in my opinion when people say “he or she is so talented” it ruffles mine!! The term talent takes away from the hard work all the top athletes have put in!
After watching and studying your videos, it’s finally starting to sink in… Now, when I watch the hard enduros I’m understanding what there doing. All what you said about throttle/ clutch control, static balance and body positioning. I can see these top guys doing it now!!! I pray I’m not too old and feeble to make my circle a bit bigger, in ability! Thank you so much Rich, and your pooch too! 😊🐕
great video. I really appreciate the fact that you show your limit here. "I want you guys to see my limits". Man, that is more powerful and carries more weight than perfectly hitting everything you try. It really helps lesser riders to realize that we all have limits.... It's about pushing against those limits each time we ride to grow and become better riders. Cheers, well done Rich!
You’re very encouraging, I’m trying to jump dirt mounds, and this rock climbing is encouraging me to do just that, jump dirt mounds, better, and better, thank you
I think the dog is showing you exactly where to approach the obstacle from. Jokes aside, I think he knows and is worried thinking you gonna crash... Smart boy!
So awesome to see this type of instruction video. I love the humour the dog the determination and most of all the failed attempt on the last rock because it shows whats needed mentally to conquer our fears and on bikes they are huge including consequences. Real world tuition from real world riders. Great channel!
Dude... Thank you for the tutorials! Once again, your vids are not only motivation for improving our Moto skills, but inspiration for life in general. Keep up the good work!
This is what we need in our community of riders who watch guys like Rich and dream of getting to their level. We don’t often see all the tries and fails off camera, the fact our hero’s are human. Keep leading us dude, we need you plain and simple.
Thanks for being the best instructional dirt bike channel on all of TH-cam. I’m very lucky to be learning to ride the same time you’re releasing this quality content. Question, what’s the best obstacle for trying my first double blip?
Thank you so much for showing us this, espesially the last obstacle. Your spirit and mentality to push the limit and never give up is very inspiring. Good job mate! I’m sure someday you will manage to solve it.
This is a really great video. A glimpse of the struggle it takes to master something is much more inspiring than just seeing successes earned by thousands of hours of challenging practice. Also, you know, there’s a point when there are diminishing returns for training on a given day. Sometimes it’s better to walk away and rest rather than making training scars that are harder to break.
You’re such an awesome teacher/instructor/mentor! Your explanations are detailed and very comprehensive. I’m a fan! Thank you for helping us hone our skills!
Your skill is amazing. I think You're motivating a lot of people to drill them skills up. And it is god to see You riding with your dog He is so happy :)
Hey Rich, you're the first guy I've met that has ever demonstrated the importance of the clutch by actually having a split camera on it whilst you're doing manoeuvres. Great videos!! Highly motivating and informative!! Well done 👏 💪😁
This the highest my heart rate has raised watching one of your videos. Love it man! That is one mean rock. It's like a 5' undercut given the downhill run up, can't wait to see you nail it! I could watch an hour of this stuff... no way is this too long. Nice to see your attack-dog self out there 🤘I've dropped my bike laughing in the middle of nowhere by myself after fighting with a rock with everything I have for an hour and for absolutely no reason. Then I come home and fall asleep thinking about how to get it done. When this stuff is in your blood it gets personal 🤣
I started out by just clutching up over speed bumps. Slow down to a few miles an hour, clutch up the front and lean back then lean forward as the rear hits, then maybe back a bit as the rear tire grabs the obstacle. You’ll figure jut out with small stuff first. Clear the front and then let the rear eat the bump. Then you can work up to curbs. Then bigger curbs. Then rocks and logs. And eventually a big concrete pylon and then big ass logs.
Outstanding! Love your channel and the content. I literally could've watched at least another hour of this. Same with most of your videos when you're out there just like this. Teaching and educating with great footage, or live recording, of your skills. Keep it up! (I'ma watch it again)
This was your best ever video! Seeing you trying and trying was so cool. It was very motivating for me to see you giving it your all. AND, Roamer is the best dog ever. I want a Roamer!
Really appreciate your transparency in showing the process. I'm a beginning MXer that would like to try these types of obstacles as a way to improve my bike handling and control. This video just might be what gets me setting up a log next to the turn track. Thanks!
That was amazing to watch! You totally had the last two runs at the big rock at the end...I also could see the down hill approach and agree that puts you in a really disadvantage. Great footage, love the dog, too!
Can you do clutch dedicated camera, and slow motion on some of these so we can break down the movements better? This would really help dude. Excellent videos! Love the dog too!
Thank you so much for this video. I'm very green in all of this and sometimes it feels like I will never master even the basics, but this has just inspired me. I can't Not achieve what I set out to do and am glad to see there are others like this in life as well. The most inspiring video. Thanks for the best training channel. Love it.
as an old man that started riding on a dual sport in SW Colorado rockies at age 59, this will always be out of my reach. But your vids are very entertaining and show me that I can push what I can do a lot more. A suggestion: Shoot these with a high frame rate camera, so that yo can slow mo these incredible clips.
I know this video was shot 5 months ago or so but I want to say your commitment is amazing. You have some absolutely great advice and your teaching is very good thank you for sharing looking forward to more of your videos I just subscribed
Again, your immersion with what you're doing, your mental focus and strategic thinking regarding the obstacle, AND sharing it with us at the same time, if that isn't the art of teaching I don't know what is. You got 100% of my focus watching this video. I was totally in it with you, my hands are sweating. This is 'fighting with nature', like MMA on rocks! Hhaha!! I hope I'll become at least half as good as you are, some time in my life. I have a KTM EXCF350 which I'm way too whimpy about because it's still new. But hopefully I'll be daring the stuff soon enough. Thanks Rich, you're the best.
Rich, I love your videos. You put your heart and soul into these. You do great work. I watch these over and over. Is there any chance you can get the important moments, tracking, with body position and control inputs, in super slow-motion? Showing the approach and execution with body movements AND control inputs, maybe on a split screen, one above the other, so you can see both together, as they happen, would be even more amazing. I do obstacles on a trials motorcycle, but doing them on a big bike, which ways another 100 lbs., scares me, and may point to technique flaws. Let's get you another cameraman(person) and a bigger budget!
Hey John, That means a lot. I'd love to do that in a video. I'll see what I can make happen. Here's one of the most important episodes I've done IMO. th-cam.com/video/FAdjejQ_OVE/w-d-xo.html I hope it helps a bit. Thanks again!
your small rock is big to me but ive got a fullsize 250 size bike now so definitely giving rocks a try because i love a challange and nothing is better than being out of your comfort zone and still succeding
Good vid. Very motivational in general. What I noticed was and you explained it differently was…. If you CANNOT WHEELIE you need to learn that first. If not, you can’t feel the balance point at around the rock top point. If that doesn’t happen i.e. double blip it is Superman time.
I appreciate very much your pedagogy, thanks for all these explanations and demo, it is like you want to help your brother to improve ! And I learn a lot from you since 2 years now approx., from all details you explain and that we would never see even by watching tons of videos....Yes obsession is a key, perseverance. Sometimes I go by an obstacle which was my nightmare 2 years ago, and now I laugh ! Right now I am obsessed by a double big roc, and I try it mentally thousands of time (mental projection is preparation !); one day soon I'll try it in real (with a friend to secure...), and if I suceed (sorry : when I will suceed !) Exactly!!
That was amazing. The uncut version, just real life honesty. Failing is part of the game, perseverance is key. We all know that, but seeing a top rider go through that process... Very inspiring.
Definitely a part of the process!

Just checked out your video, nice job on the practice course!
I also checked your vid. Great ideas and good riding. Going to copy them for our surron course.

To be perfectly honest, I'd probably sit here and watch you hit that rock for two hours, lol. Another great video Rich!

I think the dog is showing you exactly where to approach the obstacle from. Jokes aside, I think he knows and is worried thinking you gonna crash... Smart boy!

It is so cool to see the techniques from trials as they have been brought into enduro riding!

Like some of the other dudes already commented. This is the real stuff failing and trying again. Thx a lot Rich
Thank Rich! Always insightful and interesting! Can’t wait to see you conquer that big rock!
