  • The film opens with a scene of FBI agent Richard Hendricks (Michael O'Shea) bedridden in a hospital bed, dictating the results of his investigation for a report to the California Governor. The dictation scenes are interrupted by long flashbacks scenes showing how the investigation proceeded. After a number of paroles granted to dangerous career criminals, the California Governor and State Attorney General suspected corruption in the state parole board. They called upon Hendricks to investigate and expose those involved. Hendricks decided to go undercover as an ex-convict wanting to buy a parole for a criminal partner currently in jail. He then proceeded to infiltrate the social circle of another recent parolee of dubious character, Harry Palmer, and ask him how to purchase a parole. However, the people operating the parole purchase ring were quite secretive and ready to take extreme measures to prevent their exposure.

      I have read (more than once) that cigarettes in that era had far less "additives" (addictive poisons) than the 1960s, forward.
      It isn't the pure tobacco that is the primary danger & cause of health
      problems.

      Pity they don't dare throw illegals into prison- not since the whole country's biggest fear is being called a racist. Texas prisons have none of the stuff seen in movies: cells vs. large areas with short partitions between bunks, no rugs or cozy blankets, and they never see the Parole Board, either. Instead they are interviewed by flunkies that simply hand in whatever letters, Diplomas, etc. to the Board. Crude bare bones with TVs mounted high blaring day & night. I always wished the families of the victims could see how miserable TX prisons are- they would at least know the 'inmates' are not being pampered as in other states.

    Good to see good triumph over evil once again. My mother once worked for the Canadian National Parole Board and witnessed her share of incompetency and corruption but no bribery. In those days the parole board chairman just wanted her for his mistress. She said no so they bullied her to quit. A few neat cars in this film such as a '39 Buick Tudor and that '48 Buick ragtop.Not sure about that roadster.

    • @UberLummox
      @UberLummox 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're right on the '39 and '48 Buicks Jim. The 'roadster' is more of a cabriolet. Some sort of European car. Never seen anything like it. It could be fairly obscure even over there.

    A Film noir (/fɪlm nwɑr/; French pronunciation: [film nwaʁ]) is a cinematic term used primarily to describe stylish Hollywood crime dramas, particularly those that emphasize cynical attitudes and sexual motivations. Hollywood's classical film noir period is generally regarded as extending from the early 1940s to the late 1950s. Film noir of this era is associated with a low-key black-and-white visual style that has roots in German Expressionist cinematography. Many of the prototypical stories and much of the attitude of classic noir derive from the hardboiled school of crime fiction that emerged in the United States during the Great Depression.

      Roger Regor He's right. It's exactly what it means. It doesn't have anything to do w/ the film being b&w..it has to do with the darker subjects which were filmed to match the moodiness and style of the film. If it meant what everyone is arguing over, then, ALL of the films would be considered "film, noir. For instance, "Now, Voyager" w/ Bette Davis is not "film noir" but "The Hoodlum" or films along that nature are considered "film noir" and not even, that was a slim example at best.

    Interesting/informative/entertaining. Enjoy viewing automobiles/phone booths /parole office/audio recorder/women's dress & hair do's/pin ball machines of that era-!!!🤗. Realistically portrayed citizens/parole officers/law enforcement officials. This presentation reminds me of the catch & release criminals & parolees ( 2024 ) California justice system-!!!😉. Exciting/predictable ending-!!!🤔

    At 28:45 crook mispronounces "antiques," is then corrected and follows with an angry "What's da diff!" At 40:15 we hear the sounds of a train. Whoops, where is it? at 1:08:30 be ready for a brief Three Stooges homage.
