- Wealthy socialite Lois Frazer wants a divorce from her husband, but he's not ready to let her go so easy. Suspecting that he intends to murder her, she calls Lieutenant Ed Cullen, with whom she's been having an affair, in an effort to save herself from her husband's wrath. When Ed arrives someone dies, but it's not Lois. With his lover's husband shot dead, Ed finds himself the ironic and dangerous position of being assigned a case that no one knows he actually witnessed. In addition to trying to control the investigation, Ed also has the misfortune of having his own younger brother, a new detective on the force, by his side every step of the way, eager to prove himself.

He was so cool at the end, lighting her cigarette, never saying a word. That look.
This is such a good movie! You can hear the little static in the background, The way they smoke the cigarettes, Just the whole flow of the movie there's no sex, there's just the story The way they build the story is so good ! wish they made movies like this! Peace to everyone

...I'm a big fan of these type of movies too! After watching this, I ran out and bought a trench coat.
I then sat down and read the history of the trench coat and that galvanized me to join the army.
When my hitch in the army was up I balked at re-enlisting, but I did continue wearing that trench coat with me to where ever I would go.
On my first visit to NYC, I made a stop on Clinton Ave.(Millinary Row) to see my good friend Mr. John. He made me a fetching fedora that I wear with my trench coat at all times.
The fedora only cost me $3.59...although it did require some assembly.
Same here! Such style and grace that dosen't exist in today's world.

Two thumbs up. Unpredictable plot twists. I agree the woman wasn't a great actor, but I can stand a little cheese in these old movies. Besides, the other actors were terrific. This should go down as Film Noir classic!
This film is simply a masterclass in suspense! The way the music cues the dropped inspection slip, the way the lamp turned on to reveal the third bullet hole, the parkour chase along the city buildings, the echoey footsteps and whistling wind blowing through the abandoned fortress... all such effective (and cinematically-stunning) ways of eliciting anticipation from start to finish!
What is produced now has little of the production craft of yesterday.
Cobb victim if terrible luck. Car gets seen at airport, buddy sees him at toll booth and then throws the gun off the bridge and it lands in a boat.. . Dames like dat can jinx you forevah!
They don't make this kind of movie anymore. A shame a lot of the stuff we have in the cinema world .those were the days, a era gone by . Those of us who know the difference miss it. Thank u 4 bringing it back.
I haven’t set foot in a movie theater in nearly 20 years. The last time I went was to see a matinee of “Hollywoodland” and it cost just $5.00.

Woman kills her husband & ropes the guy she's been cheating on him with, a respected police detective, no less, to cover up the crime. These movies created a world that was a cesspool of depravity and corruption (which is why I love them -- they're honest about the rottenness of society and the state of mankind). But people like you think they're all sweetness and light because people dress nicely and don't use swear words.
He knew what she was all along. Her husband realized it too late. She got away with murder. He was left holding a cigarette.
The Lt. delivered a better sucker punch to his brother than his kiss to his girl😂 I found the opening scene with the dropped gun receipt and the closing with the floating scarf to be a nice pair of bookends.

Love the great Nash automobiles in this great thriller.
Great period for car design. The Nash Rambler Ambassador had absolutely gorgeous lines with the front/rear partial fender skirting, and side moulding from front to rear bumpers. I also loved the look of the external sun visor, as well. And whats not to love about Lois's car the '50 Nash Rambler convertible/landau coupe, i always loved the cars that proportionally could be going forwards or backwards. Guess that's why I had two vintage VW Beetles. I noted Ed drives a '50 Chevy Fleetline Coupe. Also, saw a '49 Caddy Fleetwood and a Studebaker on the street, i noticed that '49 Caddy because I was the proud owner of a '50 Caddy Model '62 for a number of years. 👍

They sure didn't smoke enough cigarettes, omg, in just about every scene, thruout the whole film.
Smoking was a sign of sophistication back then.
It was some what fashionable back in that era.
LOVE the black and whites! When real movies were made. And some of the titles are freakin' awesome!
Note to self: never wear high heels when climbing metal stairs in hide out; the closing seconds when her arm is linked with the prosecutor, she asks for a cigarette, 'light one for me will ya darling..." Just proves how important and vital nicotine was to superior policing in the 20th century...I rest my case.
She really flashed those eyes of hers at Lee J Cobb! They should have closed the gate behind themselves; leaving it open was an invitation to come in!
She was talking to her lawyer, offering him anything, not the prosecutor.
This is a keeper. It's a must see, very enjoyable film.
So many great shots especially toward the end. Fabulous long angles, shadowy images and the simplest of props to build tension. An art that gave way to graphics and technology.
I liked it! ( In spite of terrible sound quality) Tight, tense and they keep the suspense going. Cobb is obviously head and heels better actor than the others but he just isn't a "leading man." Nevertheless, this was an enjoyable film noir excursion.

Great theme for a noir movie. It's one thing when it's a confirmed bad cop that kills someone and tries to stay ahead of the investigation but when it's a good cop covering up for himself or a friend, relative, or a girlfriend things get a lot hairier. If its a good cop that has to make a hasty decision he's surely gonna make mistakes. A dirty cop, used to cover ups uses his deceitful instincts to slither out of predicaments. Try watching "Shield For Murder" with Edmund O'Brian right after this one. There's a similarity there but the differences are revealing too. In one portrayal the worst that the cop did was a cover up with all the accompanying behavior but allows things to escalate and get complicated. This because Cobb's character has a foil, his rookie cop brother. John Dall is just fine in his role. Jane Wyatt is the perfect bitch unfaithful wife.
Most all people who wish to be a cop, a detective, have a common inner desire to make things better. Being confronted with temptations and opportunities that the average Joe Lunchbox never comes across and how it is dealt with is the defining factor. The test of character. In the Cobb and O'Brian comparison both do great jobs in their roles exposing the differences. They both become desperate men, letting that desire to want to make things better dissolve into their immediate needs to stay free and alive. There's so much more I could ramble on about but I'm not gonna spoil the experience of anyone wanting to make the comparison of the two films. With all the viewing time available now being closed in its easy to get caught up in film analysis lol ! Thanks TMC for the many hours of indulgent solace. Its comforting to know that I always have your movies to go to 😉

What a pleasant surprise! I have been a fan of Lee J. Cobb and Jane Wyatt for a long time, and discovered John Doll after I saw "Gun Crazy" the first time. An excellent plot, exciting and filmed in and around California. A must see for film noir fans!
I liked John Dall in Alfred Hitchcock's "Rope" (1948.)
Filmed in San Francisco, a real treat seeing the old 1950 city streets, GGB, Fort Point and surrounding areas!

Second viewing, enjoyed it just as much as the first time. Sure, the plot's thin and it doesn't compare with the masterpieces, but not every film can be a champ. It's NOIR, and that's all that matters.....

They make me laugh the way they clutch before a kiss, looks so desperate.
Back then they knew it was a serious move, not like today when kissing is just a prelude to sex and men's so little. That goes for both sex and kisses. Exceptions apply.
Guinea Pig, for a long time, kissing was sterile and awkward for the most part. Probably because of the Code. Married people in separate beds, already.

A fun B-film. The Film Noir elements make up for the loose script, corny ending and suprisingly poor Jany Wyatt acting. My local movie theater played these films constantly---and we loved them!

They were all Nashes. The big bathtub sedans and the Lois Lane convertibles. It seems like cops in all the noirs of this era drove a Nash. funny how they enter the car by the front passenger door and then slide over. You can't do that today.

I reveal things about the story in this comment so don't complain if you read this before you watch the movie and it spoils the plot for you. Lots of comments here reveal that folks did not pay attention to what happened. The woman's husband had planned to murder her. He bought a gun and hid it in the house with the plan to return, break in, get the gun and shoot her with it. He probably planned on taking some obvious valuables and leaving with them to make it look like a break in. He was counting on being at the airport to be his alibi. She found the gun, had a bit of evidence to believe that he intended to kill her, and she freaked out and shot him when he came towards her. Because he did not have a lethal weapon in his hands, his shooting would be viewed as manslaughter at best, and maybe third, or second degree murder. The cop saw what happened and realized from the evidence that the husband did come back to murder her. The cop doesn't want his girlfriend to be charged with a crime that killed a guy who was planning on murdering her. He figured the guy's death could be passed off as an easy case of a mugging gone bad and it would all be forgotten. Everything up to that point is very believable. However, the scheme to fake the cause of death didn't go right from the beginning. He dumped the body in a highly visible location, and it was spotted as he was leaving the site in his car. Then the gun he thought he had gotten rid of was turned in to the police, etc. The plot may have gone off the rails around then because I think any sensible person would have told his brother what actually happened at that point. Slugging his brother and trying to run away with the gal is something no cop with a brain would have done. He'd know that even if they were not found right away, his, and her bank accounts and all investments, would be seized and they would have nothing to live on. The best part of this movie is the very end. Because she has a good lawyer and will throw the cop under the bus to save her own hide, he will probably go to jail for 2nd degree murder. He gets an expression on his face that reveals that he thinks that right before the movie ends.
Lee J. Cobb (real name Leo Jacob) was a superb actor.
Amen. He was fantastic. His work in On the Waterfront and even more in 12 Angry Men was amazing.

Now watch 'Time Table.' Mark Stevens investigates himself in crime in that one, & the entire plot is wonderful, as is the acting. This one is good, too.

The weird cars are early 1950's Nash Ambassador and Nash Rambler Airflyte. Nash cars were very popular with older people when I was a kid in the early 1960's.

Some great exterior shots of Frisco! Interesting history of the director and supporting-leading lady, too. Very interesting story behind the development of the movie. (Saw it on TCM)
Frisco is a city in the mountains here in Colorado, where I now live. I was born in Berkeley, CA, and I can assure you that San Franciscans absolutely hate to hear their city called "Frisco." It was either "San Francisco," "San Fran," or simply "The City." No criticism intended here, since you probably didn't know that, but I would advise you not to use that nickname!

And she might well have got off-HE talked her out of it by cooking up the plan to take the body to the airport. Was he thinking about her? or about himself? By the way, whether broken or jimmied, it's still forced entry. The husband's motive was clearly not robbery, so the argument could be made that this indicated he had a violent state of mind, which, along with her "terrified" state of mind, the gun purchase, the divorce, and her lawyer's ability to say ANYTHING about him without him rebutting it, and a jury's likely sympathy, she most likely would have gotten off, stand your ground law or not. Cobb's character would have a long time to mull it over...
Can someone please explain the ending to me. Was she selling him out by cozing up to a prosecutor or cop senior to him? Or was she working on trying to get him out by doing that? I DON'T KNOW...Look at that long look between them. What was it for? Did he think she'll get him out of it, or did she say that HE was the killer and take off with a new guy.. MONEY CAN BY FREEDOM, apparently.

It looks like she was throwing him under the bus and her money would get her off. He looked like he was understanding her for who she is and was resigned to the fact and looked like he almost respected her ruthlessness.

Yes, they smoked alot, they they didn't know the danger. Actually people know the danger today but choose to ignore it, such a shame. I was once a Health Care Worker and watched people struggle for their next breath.

They just wanted to believe the manufacturers claim that cigarettes were not only harmless to the smoker but also beneficial to his/her health.
One drag of a cigarette immediately tells the novice that this habit is not worth acquiring. But instead of shunning the habit, he embraces it, and then buys an S. T. Dupont and other tobacco accoutrements to show everyone that image is exceedingly more important than his health.
Sure, they smoked a lot of tobacco back then, now a lot of smoking is going on using Hippie Lettuce,lol. And Alcohol is used as much or more.

This lacked sparkling dialog, but it was well written, had a tight pace and kept suspense going til the end.

Funny, Cobb and Wyatt are the criminals when he usually plays a good cop or detective and she is usually little miss Susie-Q or the good wife and Dall doesn't even fit the picture but he sure was great in Rope! Fun to watch. The added foot step sounds drove me mad 😵✌
I had to look up the location towards the end. Ever heard of Fort Point. It has an interesting history. Glad it’s been preserved.

They couldn't have played together at the fort when they were kids, because they weren't kids together. Ed was much older...was on the force when his brother was still in grade school. Oh, well.
