  • Kinda swayed from the title on this video, I still think it'll be helpful to anyone wondering if they are questioning on whether to do engineering or not based on the difficulty.

I did the full bachelors degree with an honors year, and there was quite a few maths subjects. Here's the thing though: Calculus is no different to any other physics subject. As long as you do a bunch of practice problems to sharpen your understanding of the principles, then it pays off during the exams. Watching TH-cam channels like KhanAcademy and PatrickJMT was also a good leg-up whenever I couldn't figure out something maths-related. Most important thing though is genuine interest and motivation for the industry, because otherwise it's impossible to slog it out for a full degree.

Anybody can do something, but not everyone has the personality, way of thinking to be an engineer. Just like anybody can be a decent athlete with training, but obviously not all athletes are equal. Hints of being an engineer should be clear from a very young age. For me playing with legos, messing with hardware, rebuilding motors, it was ovbious I had the natural way of thinking to be an engineer. But I didn't discover the profession until college.

In a way yes but In that respect one can argue that not just anyone can do math because not everyone has the positive mental attitude and willingness to solve complicated problems. I would say everyone has the potential if they are willing to feel stupid and irritated when the difficult problems arise.

That last statement he made about studying is something I really wished I had realized in Engineering school. I call it the tortoise hare syndrome. You can learn 2xs more and do much better in your classes if you just very consistently slug along every single day like the turtle in the race than if you goof off consistently and then try to put forth a herculean super effort with all nighter cram sessions a few days before the big test like the hare.

I'm a 60 year old engineer and I'd say that there are two types of successful engineers, the people with natural math skills and guys like me that busted their butts and made themselves learn it. I am only speaking about math skills here. I also believe that some people just don't have the attention to detail required to be a good engineer, so you are right and wrong. Yes, work will get you far in life but the truly great or good engineers have some innate abilities as well. You seem to have great presentation and people skills and those are skills most engineers don't have, so you're going to do well. Make sure you can write as well! Writing is a very much overlooked requirement of engineering that many engineers need to work on.

For me. I was an honor student when I was a kid. Then I had a head injury, my skull shattered and they had to sew it while Im awake... so they had to put anesthesia on me..after that I notice that I feel like its hard for me to memorize... nobody believed me not even my parents and siblings but it cause my life to go 360°, I cant remember conversations that happened 2 minutes ago, I cant remember names(unlike ordinary people, even old people beat me to it) which my brain BEFORE the accident can memorize everything without me even trying. I remember how I always raise my hands or getting called to answer and I was always half focus but I know the answers, even my classmates ask me for answers and I tutor my own classmates before..
Anyway long story short I used to memorize everything without even trying.. and I dont even call it smart, I was just gifted with a sharp memory. Nobody listened to me, I was kick from my 1st honor title, went up I keep getting F on my classes. (I STILL LOVE READING AND studying alot of things like how smartphone chips works, gpu cpu etc, how this and that are made, how this thing works... I always check it on google and youtube, even purchase books about psychology and books about owning a hotel) but sadly if I dont do it over and over again I wont remember any of it and education is memorization(to be honest, even if you understand it, you still need to memorize it) anyway I was only honor roles for 3 consecutive years before graduating to HS... do I go to college now? No, I took doctor of dental medicine but I couldnt even handle 1st year which is a regular class because I cant memorize sht and I was serious and focus and everyday I read the books, do the hw and projects.. but when it comes to exam I just couldnt remember it, I cant even remember my classmates name or my professors name which is funny because professors grade that and I always dont put it because I cant remember.. people get pissed of me for asking a "stupid question" .. for them its a stupid question to ask who is our professor because weve been there for almost a year now.. but for me its a real struggle.. I wish I could go back in time or there is a magic pill that can make my brain function again like it used to... I want to study alot of things even making smartphone chips. Sadly im a dumb person who cant even memorize peoples name now. I wish my future kids will have my brain that can memorize fast and not the after accident. I want to do computer engineering but I am not capable of doing it, we can give examples of people with bad memories but were capable of doing this and that, but its really hard if you're the one in this position. Trust me I never stop trying, I do accept it now. All Im doing now is recording everything on a notebook and make sure that the notebook is visible to me so I wont forget even the notebook itself haha

Agreed! Your mindset/attitude and how you approach a STEM degree dictates it’s outcome. I love that you said there is no such thing as “math people”, as David Goggin says best “people like to put titles on you so they can feel better about themselves”. Roger that. I’m 33, and decided half way into this semester (Fall 2019) and only a year away from graduating with a graphic design degree, to change degree plans completely and do Mech E instead. How I see it, is I started with a disadvantage: I hated math and i’m not good at it “YET”, so, to attack that fear I must get good at it, this so called math phobia is something I conjured up in my head at some point in my life, and it’s exactly that: conjured up. To be honest, I’m afraid of math so bad that I associate the word “math” in the same way I associate the word “trauma” lol!!! So getting an engineering degree is exactly what I need in my life right now!! Get some. DO HARD SHIT. Hopefully your all done with your degree, congratulations if so!

Being good at the sciences is more dependent on perseverance than being “naturally gifted”. So I suppose you could say that it requires a type of person that doesn’t quit easily, and takes challenges head on.

    • @KyleGillis
      @KyleGillis  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

True true true. Perseverance is the word for it. I also like to think that people who are naturally curious and open minded about the world will gravitate towards the maths and sciences. I know this isn't always true but it makes sitting in class more easy for me. To stay wide eyed and think how these things play out in the world around us.

Love the mentality man. I def think you can do it too. Start now though don’t wait. The average person says he’s going to start tomorrow or next week or next year but the people who become great start the moment they think about it. So don’t wait until next year to become disciplined and to study and to be curious. Start right now. Even if you’re for sure going to fail a class, begin at least being curious bout it. Like why does this class even fucking exist ? What’s the point of it? We both know it’s not there just to create an obstacle. Calculus must be a pretty big deal to the natural world if we have to take 3 different classes of it lol. Haha you def have an advantage which is you don’t care about the system. So just do it for you. Fuck everyone else. Just ask a bunch of questions to yourself and then seek answers. You’ll go a long way. Welcome to the community.

I have chime in here. I'm in Mech Eng. What I've learned is that it's mostly effort rather than just being smart that matters the most. @@skebo9811 it's not a stupid question!!! You mean you want to study physics ? In my case up until two years before I graduated from high school I was not good at math at all. At this point (at second year in high school) in my country you have to choose whether to pursue a career in science or in anthropological studies(philosophy ects) and all my life I thought I was gonna choose the later. I had no intention in choosing science due to my low background in math. But then when we were made to choose I chose science because I said screw it even though I was not good at math I really liked engineering and physics ect.
Yeah my point is I sucked at math but when I started really studying them and paying attention I really really liked them I fell in love with them :'D. I'm still struggling cause..it's math but I'm wayyy better compared to 3 years ago. If you really want to pursue that career you can do it.

I'm just finishing my 2nd year of electrical engineering, I did a foundation year due to not having A levels. I am getting good grades and I can tell, I will continue on that level. I had never done algebra before, I didn't know how to use a computer at all.
My point being, anyone can do it, you just gotta graft for it, anything in life worth having is hard work. All I'm really saying is, if I can do it then anyone can, just got to shut up and listen, work hard. There are so many times I was going to give in because I didn't have the first idea on the equations etc.

I have to agree with what you said when you said that anyone can take a STEM major. In fact, humanities and STEM majors work just as hard. You just work a different part of your brain. I notice that most of the “smart kid” schools and they mostly specialize in STEM only. I mean I go to those schools and I see some students taking college classes in humanities fields while other kids take college classes in STEM. So what I’m trying to say is that no matter what school you go to or what you want to do when you get older, anyone can take a STEM course or any other course beside STEM. Thank you so much for the video, it provides motivation for future engineers and I hope you become successful at engineering and beyond.

Agree, everyone can be good at maths.
When I was in primary school, I suck at maths, every time I just pass.
When I was in lower secondary, my maths was better than in primary school, but still just normal.
Until grade 9, I suddenly wanted to be good at math. So I put extra effort on it, I studied at least 2 hours of maths every day. Every time teacher gave me exercise, not only I done all the exercise my teacher gave me, but also did many extra exercise. Then my maths has significantly improved.
When I was in grade 10, my maths has improved a lot. When I was in grade 11 and 12, I became one of the top student in math.
Maths is about practicing. Just put more hours of studying, and you will receive reward.
I am now in uni. I study quantity surveying. I want to study civil engineering but IDK why I didn't choose this major. I start to regret it.

@KyleGillis I wanna do mechanical engineering in college. I live in GB and my grades were bad and now they are getting better. I'm in the last year of school and I'm not sure whether I want to do BTEC Level 3 engineering. I'm also starting to love math and I do not want to leave math when I'm older. Should I do mechanical engineering??

Like the video, audio was somewhat fuzzy as you were talking. I find your points valid as well.

Appreciate the feedback man. I’m going to start releasing a bit more quality stuff, and a lot more simple phone recording videos as well
