I was a firefighter for 25 yrs, the Fireman's Pole is the quickest, safest and most efficient method of getting to the fire engine,. It takes less than a second to reach the appliance room. If you have to run downstairs that can take 10-15 seconds plus you risk tripping and falling down the stairs. And, as Stephen says when you are talking about saving lives every second counts. Plus you don't grip with your hands, you grip with knees and ankles, you just hook your arm around the pole for stability, wish I had a penny for every time I have gone down a pole with a cup of tea in my hand and not spilled a drip.

As hot smoke rises and fills the ceiling in a thick layer, it acts as a heat shield that radiates heat back down in to the room. This heat causes all organic materials in the room to decompose, releasing natural flammable gases as part of that decaying process. At the right temperature these gases ignite and the entire room is suddenly engulfed in a split second. It can happen in just 3 minutes of a single fire starting in a room.

My grandmother was a cleaner for the local city council. She had to sign the Official Secrets Act because a part of her job was to clean a local nuclear bunker. She said the emergency _entrance_ was a slide.
While firefighters do have their downtime, they do have tasks and work to do. They keep all the fire equipment clean and maintained. There’s a reason those engines always look polished.

I suspect a lot of the older firehouses in big US cities, such as NY (think of the old firehouse in Ghostbusters!) will be narrower and on multiple floors - with a pole!
I have been to RTA's to pick up wrecked cars on behalf of the police, if the fire brigade are called they have certain ways of doing things regardless of circumstances, sometimes this leads to tension with the police who are under pressure to clear and open roads, I have heard the fire service referred to as trumpton, a kids programme, the water babys and other things

The idea that insurance companies would not put out fires has since been discredited. In fact they often would put out the fires because it was seen as a good publicity for the insurance company. There's a great Tom Scott video about it after he pulled is own video which had made the same original claim as QI.
Firefighters in the UK will attend accidents like road traffic collisions, rescues, chemical spills, explosions, urban search and rescue, floods and other high volume water incidents and other emergency threats.
You talk of fire and the dangers. Can I suggest you react to the Ten Most Effective British Adverts.... I warn you though it is heavy going.., don't look at it lightly. They are though very, very, effective and thought provoking.
I see you like to watch WILTY to see who is telling truth or lies so I would suggest that you watch Murder in successville "Brit comedy" where the show invites actors and celebrities to be a policeman for the day to work out who the murderer is, which you can join in too, very funny comedy.

I think the pole (over stairs) is mostly tradition now. they didin't really give a different reason.
