The Soul Steal and the morphing are actually separated types of magic. As seen through countless places in both timelines, Shang Tsung needs to absorb souls in order to maintain his youth, not to be able to morph into them, and he can morph into others without stealing their souls. Yes in both MK9 and MK11 he can morph into his opponent by stealing their souls, but that was only added in MK9 onward so Shang Tsung will be able to have both the Soul Steal and morphing abilities in gameplay, as NRS can't do it in MK9 or MK11 like they could've done in MK2 and MK3 due to memory limitations in the newer games.
@@ps-lover8380 Like I said, memory limitations. Only the original trilogy allowed Shang Tsung to morph into everyone, with MK9 allowing only the boss version of Shang Tsung to morph to everyone in addition to his opponent.
@@ps-lover8380 No they aren't, the new games are capable of doing things that the old games could've never done, like much stronger presentation, the story mode cutscenes, the Towers of Time and more. Also you need to keep in mind that Shang Tsung in the old games could've only do the morphing or the Fire Skulls, as the moveset for the entire roster was a lot smaller, while in the newer games he has a much bigger variety in moves, especially in MK11 with the Variation system, like the Ninja moves, the Corpse Drop and more. It's not like that the memory isn't used for other stuff, and Shang Tsung can still morph, just not to everyone but only to the opponent. So yes, the newer games offer much more overall.
Why can't Shang turn into whoever he wants in the new games? If it's a balancing issue (which I'd understand) I'm sure they could implement a transform move that just turns you into a random character with a damage buff. It probably wouldn't be very useful, but it'd give good Shang players the opportunity to show off their roster mastery and would make his second-to-second gameplay alot more fun and interesting. Imagine transforming at the end of a combo and making quick decisions on what kind of oki you're gonna go for depending on the character rng just handed you
It became of huge discussion including balancing issue because essentially he is the most powerful player if he can transform to anyone. Incredibly powerful. They had to "Balancr" things out

That way he's still dynamic, but it's not a situation where the player can just choose the best character for every situation. It's a gamble, which in video games usually does a pretty good job balancing stuff out
@@smokey3504 you're absolutedly. I was a MK dweeb and my favorite character was Shang Tsung. Why? People i mastered all the powers and knew how to change to anyone i wanted. I was a tournament nightmare. Because I had all the powers and knew how to quickly shapeshift and use them. My strategy was endless.. Now i see why they "balanced" that character out. I caught on early

He even can't keep his transformations when the fight is over, so it's impossible to use other characters' fatalities.
