Wow, what a thrill to see stick ball being played again. I grew up in Brooklyn, playing this game more than fifty years ago. I am now retired and living in Virginia. I was telling my wife of the different games we used to play, skelly, handball, with either a spaulding red ball, or a black ball. Man, those were the days. We only used broomsticks, but hey man, whatever it takes to keep this game alive in the Apple. I lived on Madison Street and Ralph Avenue in Bklyn. Great block, and great times!

There was also the Pennslyvannia Pinkie in the 70s,which was a softer skin then the spaulding but good too.I played blackball too and skelly when we lived in the projects in the Bronx.Great times yes, different world these days.

Yes, times are much different today. Sounds like you still live in the City. Be safe!

Woods and grass are only a plus. We play in upstae NY against sides of sheds, as part of forest hikes, spend time digging out ball from brush. Of course stickball gear always rides to NYC, Bronx on road trips. Happy summer to all of you!

90’s we played all the little kids in the neighborhood in a T intersection street. My parents house was in the center and over our fence was homerun. We broke a couple windows lol but wow I remember we all had fun. We played in Pomona Ca, LA county. I tell my oldest all about it now, it’s crazy for him cause no kids play sport well hardly or any activity in the street. I remember late nights we played cops and robbers in summer vacation I’m talking 9pm-11pm lol our parents had to go find us or they would be yelling from the house doors. We would be up by 7 am and repeat.

We used to play stickball against a strikezone painted on a wall -- hundreds of games growing up in the 70's. Cement schoolyard. Staten Island. PS 41. Fences were 150 to 200 feet away, 30-40 feet high. Pitching to the strike zone created a closer resemblance to baseball than any other sport including softball -- for the pitcher-batter duel. You threw overhand from 60 feet and pitched to the zone, outside the zone -- threw fastballs and curves -- with a pink Spaulding.
Years later they screwed up that schoolyard by putting all kinds of kiddies slides and stuff in it so you don't have the run of the field. There were many catastrophic knee injuries of touch football on the cement schoolyard (and tackle football if you got 5" of snow or more).
There aren't many good schoolyards with a wall with enough space for a good stickball field these days. Because of that I see very few kids playing stickball.

One on one. Just two players, pitcher vs the batter (with a large square strike zone chalked out on a wall) was the best. The pitcher would throw a high mph fast ball. Talk about intense. In the version seen in the video the batter does not need a skill set. We used to do this at PS 181 in NY.

Spaldeen - a new release on Amazon by an author I’ve been following for a couple of years. My dad used to tell me about the little ball he played stickball with in the Brooklyn neighborhood where he grew up. …A novel approach to storytelling, but I enjoyed it and flipped my copy to my dad. I think he’ll like it.

I played this with my brother. Only I'm a huge fan of cricket so we set up tin cans as a wicket and the ball is bowled or pitched with one bounce...so much fun

We always played with a pitcher and a catcher

@@durden2480 - With a pitcher was best, but a catcher would ruin it. We used a wall with the strike zone outlined in chalk. If the batter didn't hit the ball, the ball would bounce back to the pitcher. One on one, no other players - IMO that was the best version of stick ball for us. PS 181 in NY.

South side. There are corkball/Indian ball fields at Tower Grove Park along Arsenal. There are also some at Webster Univ. and Jefferson Barracks Park.
I don't really like "soft pitch"... too easy to hit. That's my main beef with softball (well, that and I'm getting too old to run the bases, haha!).

Could anyone please explain me the rules?
    Are HR allowed?
the playing field size is determined or it’s infinite?
    Are there 4 bases?
    How many players?
    What are the Defensive positions?
If the ball hits the lateral walls, what happened?
Thanks a lot! I’m really interested in this new game to me!

I am living overseas and wouldl like to relearn this game again and aquire sticks anyone have any ideas? Also win I was little we played it different in Queens.. We painted a strikezone on the wall and pitched the ball. If you swung and missed three times then you were out. We played it like baseball without a catcher but we only had about 3 to 5 men fielding.

for me, i use wiffleball with my friends. but there are only around 3 people playing, total

mrnaagyman77 you can get great sticks at home depot etc. They'll cut the dowel down to the apropriate size. We also played fast pitch stickball at a chalk outlined strikezone on the schoolyard wall and we used a Spaldeen (Spalding) rubber ball. I don't know if you can still buy that ball. They restarted making them a number of years ago but i dont know if they still are.
