Great review as usual. I want to add one piece of information - the High Dynamic Range setting toggle is applicable only when a 3.5 mm stereo cable is used. In this case Chromecast Audio uses it's built in DAC and outputs analog signal and that setting toggle determines whether that analog output signal is HDR or not. If using a mini toslink SPDIF (optical) cable, Chromecast Audio outputs digital signal and does not use it's built in DAC. In this case that High Dynamic Range setting toggle is inconsequential - it always outputs HDR digital signal even if the High Dynamic Range setting toggle is set to off
after watching 4 other videos of this chromecast shit now i finally understand why anybody could possibly want this . . because you sir ,you speak the language . and thats why i love this fucking channel
You're wrong how this works, but in the end the result is the same. When you tell the google play app on your device to play song x, you are actually talking directly to the chromecast device and saying "play song x from google play". The device then goes and get's that song through your router (not through your phone). In that sense you are correct. Where you're wrong is that your device is communicating directly with the chromecast, just through wifi rather than bluetooth. This means you get the range, speed, and consistency of wifi.
This is convenient because eventually you'll be able to use your lossless files in the cloud rather than having to store them physically (which can take up a lot of storage)
Tablet, SPDIF reclocker and a pair of active monitors w/DSP and I doubt that most of us would care if it was lossless or not. Your vid makes the time and money I threw at UPnP last year even more frustrating than it was at the time - thanks for this.
I think it works a bit differently than you stated. The instructions are sent directly to the chromecast. For example your phone tells the chromecast directly the what to play along with where to get it (play music/netflix etc) and the chromecast connects to the service and fetches the data and your phone is off the hook. You can still use the phone to pause/play...and those instructions are again sent directly to the chromecast
My Chromecast Audio actually worked a few times, with great effort. It's had all the problems: 'low volume' , 'loss of connection', 'poor sound quality' & 'No casting device found'. Google help had me replace the router once, which didn't help. The last straw: an hour talking to Google, managed to kill my Chromecast TV device too. If it came with a full time in-home IT consultant, it might be worth it.
One great thing about Chromecast (regular or audio) is the Google Cast extension for Chrome web browser. Basically if you can play it from the web you can cast it. So radio stations from all over the world or even old time radio shows via Internet Archive at archive.org. Or just... well... worlds of stuff from anywhere/everywhere. Right now I'm listening to a librevox audio book recording of Moby Dick via archive.org to my Chromecast Audio on an old Tivoli Pal radio. And now I'm listening to NY Public Radio Jonathan Channel. Etc... You can also mirror anything on a reasonably recent Android device to CCAudio. Right in the quick setting pull down I think there is a cast or mirror switch.
So what about an updated video now when Tidal actually do work with Chromecast? How could the discontiniue the production of this one? I'm so afraid mine will stop working now when I can't get another one. Or if the casting support dissapears. The horror!
I got the standard chromecast and connected it via HDMI to my AVR, now I don't need to have my TV on to listen to music (tidal). There's absolutely no reason to get the audio over the standard one, since they cost the same, unless you want to connect them directly to a powered speakers or a dac via optical.
Wow, I was unaware of the Optical Audio Out functionality on these things! It took me stumbling onto a 3 year old Z Review to find that out. (Now if only I had a sound system to justify the need to hook a Chromecast Audio up with Optical)
Thank you Zeos for another first class review. I bought one of these to use into my Chord Mojo (your favourite DAC). Straight off of Tidal it sounds simply sublime, and frees up my laptop!
I was a Huge fan of yours for the last few weeks.... but now that you mentioned "The Best of Godzilla (1984-1995)" soundtrack, I think we've just become best friends, LoL!
Just the TIP (at the 8 minute mark)! All these years later I just found 3 CCAs on CL to add to my existing 3 CCAs, 3 on the first floor, 3 on the second floor, Lets Go!
That's exactly what I did. With a small battery pack. The Google dongle uses almost no power. Bloody brilliant and it sounds fantastic. I have mine hooked up to a Topping NX7. It kicks with absolutely anything short of electrostatic.
You said you wish you had this in your car. I have a iPod classic 160 gb. It's not chromecast audio but all my songs are in my truck 24-7. I bought the chromecast and am planning on getting chromecast audio soon. Nice review and one wild stereo set up.
Can you cast your personal music library that you've uploaded to Google Play? I don't have the Chromecast audio yet, but I've played around with the Google Play Music app and I don't see a cast icon. When I play my music from my personal library, I'm looking for that cast icon just to know we can do it, but I don't see it. Will it show up if I have the Chromecast audio? I don't care for those free music services. I just want to cast my own music, and logically, I think you should be able to do that if you've uploaded your music to Google Play. Can someone confirm?
+blackbelttube I can. Some music seems unavailable but the rest works fine. I assume this has to do with what servers it is residing on over at Google HQ. I have even cast recordings that I synced accidentally.
Have you heard the Telarc release of the 1812 overture? It has the best representation of the cannon shots ever recorded as far as I'm concerned. The cannon shots drop down to 6 Hz. The recording team went to a college to fire and record a cannon from the correct time period. The cannon was so loud that nearby windows shattered from the Shockwave. The vinyl record has stupid grooves which basically just say "fuck you for even attempting to play me". All that to say that it's an intense track which you would probably enjoy.
+jonlaw16 I have quite a few renditions and I even bought two vinyls of the 1812 though not sure if either one is the Telarc. (don't have a record player so they are in storage)
Zeos how the DAC inbuilt on this Audio Chromecast compares in audio quality to something like the Topping E30 for example? ANyone made any comparison to any standalone DAC and this Google Audio Gadget?
Didn't see the mention of the multi-room streaming support when you have multiple devices, that's probably my favorite feature! they even support time delay's between rooms. As for android apps, check out bubbleupnp, it's easily my favorite. As always, a great and entertaining review from the man we trust! Keep on kicking ass Zeos!
This could very well be late to the discussion, but I am loving your video Dr Z! This would be perfect with the Kanto YU4 or YU6 which has that powered USB port and built-in DAC and for that reason, I'm probably going that route. Next set of speakers will be the Mackie speaks you say are better than the LSR305, which I can get Canadian for $219 and the 308's for $359. Keep putting out awesome videos! Very entertaining!
HOLY shit that's cool. I would never use this or need this but to know that it exists for people who need and/or want it is awesome. Hey have you ever heard of Beirut? I think you might enjoy it if you haven't. Especially his album called the Flying Club Cup.
what do you prefer chromecast audio or a sonos sytstem. chromecast audio you can plug into multiple speakers (with a micro jack port). and wehn you upgrade your system you just buy an extra 40 euro chromecast. or buy a sonos system where you get both in one speaker. but adding different speakers than sonos to your system, you have to buy a zoneplayer what starts at around 350 euros.
thanks for this review and for showing how it actually works. turns out this isn't what I actually need or want. I'm going to need a Bluetooth device. I need something that doesn't require an internet connection. I use an old android phone with no service as a mp3/mp4 player..I have a giant boom box with a 3.5 input that I want to stream from my phone to the boom box or to a Bluetooth car stereo.
Adding this reply a year late: With VOX music player for Mac, I can convert TH-cam audio to the VOX player in mp3. I prefer AIFF, FLAC, AAC, but mp3 is an improvement over youtube compression. And I can listen to that music w/o needing YT or the internet.

_Can you Stream from Local Storage without Internet Access_. It seems very oriented to the Internet. However I have a friend who will be in a foreign country with very limited to near non-existent Internet. He would like to play his Digital Music stored on his computer or NAS. He can set up a Home Network, but Internet will be more difficult. So, can the Chromecast Play Music stored locally?? That aspect is not clear.
I have to ask and I'm not sure where, I have a low budget and want a surround sound setup, I have 2 JBL Control One's and was just wondering if you have heard them and what you think. They're really cheap and I was bought them as a gift I think they sound alright for the money and was wondering A) if you think I should buy another pair or B) something better around the same cost £100, from my experience I would say they have very little on the low end but I would be using with a sub. I would appreciate any help you can offer thanks.
hey dude thank you so much for another awesome and detailed review, big up for TOOL, just one question for you: how big is that power bank you're using (mAh) and how fast does it drain with chromecast? i'm asking cause im thinking about wifi "auxing" my car's audio system with it so i need it to be very portable, a full day's usage to say the least
I was just wondering if I can use my Anker portable battery to play where I don't have access to an outlet. how long does it last on one of those things? Thanks!
Will it have better sound volume than my average smarthpone with spotify + bluetooth receiver like for ex. fiio btr1? Asking cause my phone is so quite on the output.
Thanks for the video! Quick question. If I have my tv connected to my sound-bar through optical. I have a google home mini and chromecast currently and i can turn on/off tv play netflix spotify etc via voice but i cant turn on/off volume up/down my audio. Do I need the chromecast audio or can this be done in another way? Thanks!
I would suggest not getting a normal Chromecast, and get the Nexus Player instead. $50 from Best Buy. Has all the features of a Chromecast, as well as it has Kodi support and Limelight support for streaming games. Also I am probably going to listen to a couple of Tool albums tomorrow because it has been too long.
received my chromecast audio today and I plugged the device into my schitt gungnir dac using the optical output. I wanted to compare the sound quality to my current streamer Sonos which sounds very good streaming Pandora through my dac. However, when streaming the chromecast audio your my dac the buy better gear light pops on the gungnir meaning that chromecast has extremely high jitter and my dac defaulted to its standard clock. In short chromecast audio being streamed through my dac sounds really harsh and Soundstage is compressed, and to me it's very hard to listen to without becoming quickly fatigued. It's a great concept but needs a better internal dac to reduce its high amount of jitter. You might be able to reclock it with a remedy relcocker from wyred4sound (400.00)
Hi Guys, I have a Chromecast Audio, currently using the 3.5mm out into powered monitors. I am interested in getting a DAC, e.g. the Schiit Modi 2 uber, and use the optical out of the CCA. Can I still control the volume out of the DAC using the app I'm casting with (Spotify)? Cheers
I don't think you can just leave it playing "constantly forever". I could be wrong, but I have the original Chromecast and I stream Spotify while I work and after About 3 hours it stops playing and I have to hit play again. Anyone else have input on this?
Yea it's probably Spotify's doing, they save alot on bandwidth costs for stopping "orphaned" streams, the same way netfilx does. BubbleUPNP serving up music from my NAS to my chromecast device has been going for a week steady without issue in similar fashion to Zeos's "radio" idea.
+Z Reviews I had to think for a while who you sound like to me, but I finally got it, a great photographer called Scott Kelby, he has his own shows on TH-cam too :D
can anyone help me please. lol i set up my chromecast and when i try to watch movies from Kobi on my laptop. well it casts just fine but there is no sound? im not sure what to do.
Z, any plans to review the Google Home to see how well it works with Chromecast Audio/Google Play Music? The Echo is cool, but Amazon Music sucks and I'm too cheap to pay for Spotify ;)
In this case that High Dynamic Range setting toggle is inconsequential - it always outputs HDR digital signal even if the High Dynamic Range setting toggle is set to off

this.
"this says to google he wants this, google says i got that s#$t" One sub earned
Antech just wait dude. You'll have plenty of moments like those if you continue watching.
It's a shame Google discontinued this.
You're wrong how this works, but in the end the result is the same. When you tell the google play app on your device to play song x, you are actually talking directly to the chromecast device and saying "play song x from google play". For anyone into electronic music, Digitally Imported radio app also works with Chromecast(both audio and video versions)
I would be happy if you get the list of your entire music collection..
This is convenient because eventually you'll be able to use your lossless files in the cloud rather than having to store them physically (which can take up a lot of storage)
Btw they updates the firmware recently. You can sync these guys across multiple devices now.
I am a huge fan of the Chromecast. Its like having a phone as your remote control. Super convenient.
Tablet, SPDIF reclocker and a pair of active monitors w/DSP and I doubt that most of us would care if it was lossless or not. Your vid makes the time and money I threw at UPnP last year even more frustrating than it was at the time - thanks for this.
Really glad you did this review. Did not expect the optical out.

+Mahanth B Yeah, your phone is a remote pretty much. Just tells Chromecast "fetch this".
My Chromecast Audio actually worked a few times, with great effort. It's had all the problems: 'low volume' , 'loss of connection', 'poor sound quality' & 'No casting device found'. Get a Swan M200 Mk II or III.
Hey Zeos what do you think about this review from a 2019 perspective?
Agree. The chromecast audio had been discontinued and is now selling for top dollar!
this is the best video review I've found. nobody showed off the optical output and your video has sold me on buying one of these. thanks!
Thank you Zeos for another first class review. I bought one of these to use into my Chord Mojo (your favourite DAC). Straight off of Tidal it sounds simply sublime, and frees up my laptop!

Foobar2k > BubbleUPnP > Chromecast Audio
Lossless local streaming
you can actually cast the whole audio from your device if you want to listen to anything else except the compatible apps.
TOOL! You're my favorite reviewer of all time.
You said you wish you had this in your car. I have a iPod classic 160 gb. It's not chromecast audio but all my songs are in my truck 24-7. I bought the chromecast and am planning on getting chromecast audio soon. Nice review and one wild stereo set up.

Love the way you explain things. I could understand if you got more technical but it's a nice change from the "professional" channels on TH-cam.
What do you think about jitter and ifi spdif Ipurifier with this? Some people think its needed... I'm not sure... what say you?
You convinced me to buy this. I didn't realize it could use optical.
feels strange watching your desk setup before it was awesome LOL
Zeos how the DAC inbuilt on this Audio Chromecast compares in audio quality to something like the Topping E30 for example? ANyone made any comparison to any standalone DAC and this Google Audio Gadget?

That feature came out right after this review.
Are you cleaning home sometimes?

What is the difference between this and a normal wifi audio receiver? Just the google play thing? Can you even play files that are stored locally?
Can't believe took me a year to finally buy this
Looking at it the other day this is a lot more than, I thought it was, thanks
can the chromecast control the volume of the equipment via an optical cable?
what do you prefer chromecast audio or a sonos sytstem.
chromecast audio you can plug into multiple speakers (with a micro jack port).
and wehn you upgrade your system you just buy an extra 40 euro chromecast.
or
buy a sonos system where you get both in one speaker. but adding different speakers than sonos to your system, you have to buy a zoneplayer what starts at around 350 euros.
p.s live in europe so the prices are a little different
CC is still the cheapest way to do it. The Sonos works for my situation just because I want that physical play button and it starts playing spotify.
very good review, but was not clear on optical output and 3.5mm jack output. Does CCAUDIO have both out put ports?
FYI Tidal works
how does this compare (if you can still find it in stores) to the thing called Audiocast from a no name company?
I have my CCA hooked directly to my LSR 305's. You really think their dac is that bad that the other one sounds better?
headphones you wearing? what u recommend $160aud .over ear passive noise cancellation
Is that an Emotiva TA-100 you have. Would you recommend that Amplifier?
How do I properly set the volume? Keep the receiver up high and use the app, or what?
so it wont play music stored on ur phone ?
Is that an Onda v919 tablet? I love Tool.
May I correct you, Z. Google is not thousands of miles away. Keep in mind that they have datacenters everywhere.
Can you stream the audio of a TH-cam video to is.
If your device is casting and not an app.
thanks for this review and for showing how it actually works. turns out this isn't what I actually need or want. I'm going to need a Bluetooth device. I need something that doesn't require an internet connection. I use an old android phone with no service as a mp3/mp4 player..I have a giant boom box with a 3.5 input that I want to stream from my phone to the boom box or to a Bluetooth car stereo.
and I also don't use Google music or any of the listed apps you showed. this chrome cast seems to be a good product but not what I need.
+shawnwade302
Just get a bluetooth receiver that has a 3.5 output
these are house shoes or outdoor shoes?
Can you also cast the audio of youtube videos?
+blackbelttube I haven't figured out if I can. I can't see it working without a video end.
Kung-Fu Mojo You can but you need a subscription to Google's TH-cam Red or music
Adding this reply a year late: With VOX music player for Mac, I can convert TH-cam audio to the VOX player in mp3. I prefer AIFF, FLAC, AAC, but mp3 is an improvement over youtube compression. And I can listen to that music w/o needing YT or the internet.
Nice review, but just one little remark: The explanation is not 100% correct. If you start playing a song on your phone, your phone searches for the chromecast in the network (in the same network segment). If it would work like you explained, then you would be able to start playing a song while your phone is not in the network. While it is true that it is streaming the song directly from the server, the communication itself is just happening in the local network. In current versions it is even possible to stream audio direct from you phone (like a local flac) to the chromecast. This is using just your local wifi then.
nas versões atuais do chromecast audio vc diz?
Best review on the Internet!
Z- I just looked on the google store site and now it says totally lossless audio. Is this marketing bs or can you actually tell it is lossless?
Sam Luber FLACs turn to 320kps when it uploads to Google Play Music. In my experience, it almost indistinguishable in audio quality. If FLAC is still your proximity, you had to use Deezer or TIDAL for the full effect.
How do you connect this to another DAC?What cable do you have to use?
_Can you Stream from Local Storage without Internet Access_. It seems very oriented to the Internet. However I have a friend who will be in a foreign country with very limited to near non-existent Internet. He would like to play his Digital Music stored on his computer or NAS. He can set up a Home Network, but Internet will be more difficult.
So, can the Chromecast Play Music stored locally?? That aspect is not clear.
Best review I have ever seen, dude you are comical!!!
I have to ask and I'm not sure where, I have a low budget and want a surround sound setup, I have 2 JBL Control One's and was just wondering if you have heard them and what you think.
They're really cheap and I was bought them as a gift I think they sound alright for the money and was wondering A) if you think I should buy another pair
or B) something better around the same cost £100, from my experience I would say they have very little on the low end but I would be using with a sub.
I would appreciate any help you can offer thanks.
Awesome review as always. You hyped up for RWBY Volume 3 Zeos?
+Rox Kaizer It is almost too soon..
ALMOST....
what about spotify premium or tidal? soundquality vs lossless
hey dude thank you so much for another awesome and detailed review, big up for TOOL, just one question for you: how big is that power bank you're using (mAh) and how fast does it drain with chromecast? i'm asking cause im thinking about wifi "auxing" my car's audio system with it so i need it to be very portable, a full day's usage to say the least
That Amazon battery is pretty huge. I have never killed it with the chromecast with 10-12 hour use.
White type of optical cable so you use? I thought it was the standard Toslink, but it doesn't fit.
+Ali Etezadkhah It is this type [amzn.to/1XO6Y7T] but if you already bought a cable you can get an adapter [amzn.to/1R3gT4g]
Thank you. All these years and I never knew mini Toslink existed.
I hope it outputs good sound to my new BOSE SoundLink Color speaker.
I could stream the FLAC files on my Plex media server to it. I currently do it with my regular Chromecast and it works great too.
In foobar from pc cooperate?I want to send the sound from foobar
You cannot
I know this is old, but; yes. You can. Just install a UPnP server on your computer + a UPnP plugin for Foobar. It works great. Also google it.
On B&H right now for $25 with free shipping and not tax. Perfect stocking stuffer
is that your mr2 in the picture?
si
es muy bonito senor euroatomic
It has a 1ZZ in it so mui picante y mui BRAP
Muy Brap
Have you tried multi-room yet? Like to see a review about that!
Not yet. I have one on my receiver so it should work.
I was just wondering if I can use my Anker portable battery to play where I don't have access to an outlet.
how long does it last on one of those things? Thanks!
+Beto Aguirre I have done this and with a BIG battery you will get most of a day or days off of it. Smaller I can't guess.
would it be better to use the dac in the smsl sa-50 or the dac in the chromecast audio?
Will it have better sound volume than my average smarthpone with spotify + bluetooth receiver like for ex. fiio btr1?
Asking cause my phone is so quite on the output.
Thanks for the video! Quick question. If I have my tv connected to my sound-bar through optical. I have a google home mini and chromecast currently and i can turn on/off tv play netflix spotify etc via voice but i cant turn on/off volume up/down my audio. Do I need the chromecast audio or can this be done in another way? Thanks!
I know you really dont like having face reveals in your vids. Pretty MAJOR face reveal @12:45 fyi
Why oh WHY doesn't Google use Opus? It sounds better at 128 kb/s than MP3 at 320kb/s
Z, you said that you uploaded all your songs to play music, is there any way i could get those?
nope
Anyone know if when you switch the audio output to high quality if it does a full line level signal?
I would suggest not getting a normal Chromecast, and get the Nexus Player instead. $50 from Best Buy. Has all the features of a Chromecast, as well as it has Kodi support and Limelight support for streaming games. Also I am probably going to listen to a couple of Tool albums tomorrow because it has been too long.
+DCsProductions The Nexus Player only has HDMI out though. For TV it's great. For music, not so much.

I have the same phone and mine won't freaking charge either. Did you fix the problem? Because mines bricked now.
Bought better usb cables. Half of mine don't seat well. The Red Ankers are the best [amzn.to/2pvYrMh]
Z Reviews Why the hell didn't I think of just plugging in a different USB? Anyways, thanks, I'll try that.
Yes it's connected to my TV. But kobi is on my laptop
Hi Guys,
I have a Chromecast Audio, currently using the 3.5mm out into powered monitors.
I don't know the exact time but it does stop at some point.
+Z Reviews yeah, right around 3.5 or so for me. I think actually a Spotify (what I usually use) thing more than a Chromecast thing.
Yea it's probably Spotify's doing, they save alot on bandwidth costs for stopping "orphaned" streams, the same way netfilx does. BubbleUPNP serving up music from my NAS to my chromecast device has been going for a week steady without issue in similar fashion to Zeos's "radio" idea.
yeah, I'm sure it's not a Chromecast thing. It's the streaming service and it's understandable.
Sounds like a tech review by Vince Vaughn hahaha
Good review man :)
+KYOZAKI Highest complement ever.
+Z Reviews I had to think for a while who you sound like to me, but I finally got it, a great photographer called Scott Kelby, he has his own shows on TH-cam too :D
So any music it plays has to be somewhere online in the cloud?
+Hindsight Aquatics you can cast all the audio on your device/in a chrome tab to it as well
+BOSS JEDIZOHAN oh, ok. Wonder how well this will work in an all apple world. I don't have a google device or Windows's box.
+Hindsight Aquatics "all apple world", you understand that apple is mostly extremely popular in the US right? In the East its mostly Android devices.
Yah, a lot of apple users here.
Opens possibilities but not really "plug and play" from you moving back and forth from one room to the other to play it.
hey zoes just wondering, how many songs do you have in your library???
like 18,000?
what Kind of Power bank you have ? thats really interesting for me . that cool black anyway
It is an anker.
can anyone help me please. lol i set up my chromecast and when i try to watch movies from Kobi on my laptop. well it casts just fine but there is no sound? im not sure what to do.
+Krista Knee Where is the Chromecast connected to? Your TV?
Z, any plans to review the Google Home to see how well it works with Chromecast Audio/Google Play Music? The Echo is cool, but Amazon Music sucks and I'm too cheap to pay for Spotify ;)
This doesn't really have anything to do with the audio side, but what kind of tablet is that? It looks like an iPad running android.
It is a Chinese tablet maker .. I forget the name but there are a TON on aliexpress for cheap. I paid like $140.
