    I have a Q3 I love it and it's perfect for my interest in architecture and landscaping. I differ from the point-and-shoot comment. Any camera used fully automatic is a point-and-shoot. This camera gives you the opportunity to shoot manually and get amazing pictures.

    I enjoyed your in-depth and frankly honest appraisal of the Leica Q3 and who might be the customer most likely to benefit from one. I am one of them. For my two-week family vacation to Italy this past October, I left my Canons at home and took the Q2 and the M11, along with my Voigländer 50mm APO Lanthar and Leica APO Telyt-M 135mm. (I traded in my Q2 for a Q3 at the Leica Store in Florence simply because they had one). The Leicas, along with my new iPhone 15 Pro Max, were all I needed to capture photos of Rome, the Cinque Terre, Florence, Perugia, and smaller towns. The iPhone handled video and shots wider than 28mm, while the M11 was used primarily for portraits and telephoto. The Q's took care of everything in between.

    I had the Q2, and loved it. I pre-ordered the Q3 on the day it was announced. It's my go to travel camera. I also have an M10, and an SL2. Of all of them the M10 gets the least attention, but I will not part with it. I think the Q bridges the gap between the M and SL system. It's a good compromise of both worlds. I actually use the video quite often on it. Not that I would intentionally use it for video over the SL2, but when I have it, it will be a better video option than my iPhone. I do also think it can't be overstated how good the lens on the Q is. It is one of the sharpest lenses that I have.

    I have a M11, SL2S and Q3 - and over time, I must say that the Q3 and SL2S is getting more and more shooting time. The M11 is lovely, but nailing focus is getting harder and harder these days, and the SL2S is just so nice to use for tele and ultra wide. I even prefer shooting my M glass on the SL2S as it's just easier to focus! This is coming from some one who has been shooting film and digital M cameras for over 20 years. But chemistry is hard to define, but for me the Q3 is now my go to for travel, street and general photography, and the SL2S for specific applications e.g. sports, architecture etc.

    • @eastbaystreet1242
      @eastbaystreet1242 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Hello Johan - it sounds like (nailing focus getting harder... over 20 years) you are in your 40s/50s/60s vs. a lot of shooters who are in their 20s/30s and may not have started to experience the inevitable weakening of their vision. I am 70 and love photography as much as ever, but my vision is affecting my ability to focus. I have some amazing photo gear (Leica, Nikon Z9, tons of glass) but I am really looking at the Q3 as a next step for just the use cases you mentioned. I do shoot some very fast sports and will keep using the Z9 for that, but for my more artistic efforts (to the extent the word artistic can be applied to my simple shots), I am thinking the Q3 will be perfect. And I am hoping Leica do some firmware updates to address the issues that Gajan has mentioned.

  • @lispbar
    @lispbar ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Excellent explanations! I especially liked also the thoughts and image examples from Alam and Shivam. My personal reason to get the Q2 as an hobbyist was to have high-end image quality in a small package. For me it's the depth&rendering of the colors, but one might need to have good monitors/displays or printers to see the possible depth of color. When that comes together, it is magical. A lot of different styles and preferences can be realized with it, even though it is a fully digital camera, given that it has a great lens as an analog part, which is very important for the end result: light + lens + sensor + computation, all four must come together.

    Probably one of the best and insightful reviews on TH-cam. Great video Gajan! I have a Q2 and have been using it for about a year now. I do like how you mentioned chemistry in the camera kit. I have been shooting a lot of concert photography and while I have my Z8 cameras slinged around my shoulders, I also carry Q2 on neck strap. Being able to quickly snap candids Q2 while leaving my Z8s setup for video is very handy. As far as upgrades, while I do like some of the upgrades in the Q3, I still find it hard for me to justify the cost of switching to Q3 over my Q2. Maybe down the road I can justify it for business but currently I cant and my Q2 has been handling everything I’ve thrown at it.

    I love the idea about the camera not holding you back. Thats why I love my A7R III so much. Its small, light and I typically just use a 35mm prime lens on it. I'm never thinking about the camera system, I set it to where I know its going to expose well every time and I just use it as a big point and shoot. This seems to be the same sort of concept

      Selling off some of my Sony gear to get the Q3, I kept my A7r3 with some favorite glass. That camera had become my workhorse. Now, time flys by and still no Q3 in sight (now for various reason$) so I snatched up a Sony A7cR… wow.. it’s not perfect but with adapted M glass and that 61mp sensor, I’m not sure I’m getting that Q3.. but time will tell.

      Indeed M11 with M lenses is much better than Q. My only real issue and difficulty with M was focusing wide open say 1.4 managing to see the focus point on a rangefinder is damned hard. The EVF on the Q or even the heavier SL is much easier to nail focus even manually.

    I had a Q2 Monochrome but sold it within a year. I'm happier with my M246 for various reasons including many you mention. Sometimes we need to stay with our roots even with the technology available these days, I honestly prefer the need to work a little at getting the results I'm after, especially the ability to switch out my focal lengths. With that said I still love my 65 year old M3 double stroke for the same reason!

    Nice review, but the bottom line for me is where would I put 6K. Buy an all in one camera and lens with limitations or buy a complete camera and lenses that can give me so much more versatility, reach, without compromises! Having the ability to use any lens I need and even switch bodies on upgrades at a cost of a fraction of what a new Q would cost!
    Now I’m sure a lot of people can afford both, but I’m not one of those lucky ones! 🖖

    Always one of the best insights into photography and photography gear. I love it. The Q system is something I didn't think I needed but a 28mm on a M is just as easy to use. I’m on my second Q and for the reasons your guest photographers said. In my opinion Leica could strip out 2 or 3 features, charge less, and they could make a whole other segment. Remove video. Remove JPG. Even potentially remove Autofocus and I’m in 100%. RAW is the only way to shoot. Manual focus is amazing especially with its EVF. Video on this camera is redundant. It’s a stills monster. The 28mm is fine as there is plenty of high resolution cropable image to work with. It is the absolute best travel cam on the planet. M11 is better but focusing rangefinder fully open sucks. I agree with you, add a small built in flash. A 35mm version with say 2.4 would be very interesting. But remember this is Leica’s best selling cam ever. And it’s sold more Qs than all others combined. That’s saying something.

    Struggling to decide in advance what will be my retirement camera…been with Q2 for 2yrs at work. Canon and Sony for pro video, but love the minimalist aspect of Leica. Can’t see an M in the future, but the Q2 will be really old by the time I retire. But man…once you go Leica, nothing fills that feeling. As for video…I’m 30+ years into pro video career, I have no issue with secondary source audio. But…once I retire, my phone will be fine for video…I couldn’t care less about those specs.

Give me a Q3 with a genuine 40mm focal length and I might sell all my other camera gear to get one. (I went with a Sony a7Cii and 40mm f/2.5 G lens. It is perfect for me for street photography. Hey Gajan, great review as always ! Thank you for sharing your "after hype" feedbacks, these are the best.
    By the way, I really enjoyed the talk about business and engineering decisions camera companies have ! 👍
    Coming back to the cameras, I am in love with my M11 and the photographic experience of the M system in general ! Especially when I am shooting "alone", for street, landscapes, documentary etc.
    However, there is 1 point which is slowly leading me to the Q system as a secondary camera and it's when I am with family, kids and babies situations which of course happens a lot haha.
    Don't make me wrong, the M is also fantastic for capturing these moments, but too often I think more about "will I really have this shot with manual focus or is it better to keep the M in the bag right now..." or "do I really want to take the risk to take the M in my hand while there is one kid in my arms and 2 others playing with water beside" 😭
    I mean, I often thought I should just take back a good old XPro 2 or something like that only for these situations, as of course, I reaaally don't need a 6k $ camera to do this. But man... it is so hard to look back once shooting with these Leica gems ! 😅 And I do believe the Leica App and the workflow it allows is way underrated because indeed, it is awesome !

    Great video once again! Thank you for this analysis which will surely help me in my choices.
    I'm in the middle of a professional reflection on the camera. I started at Q2 in 2019. Very quickly I discovered the SL2S. I sold my Q2 and acquired an M11. I fell in love with M. He helped me rediscover the art of photography.
    Despite everything, I succumbed to Q3 because I wanted to return to my first love but I am quite disappointed because as you say, I find it too “easy”. In fact I feel like I'm not doing anything anymore. Not to compose anything. That he doesn't need me... And when I have to shoot for my clients my SL2S and my M11 are enough for me. The Q becomes the emergency camera…
    I'm hesitant to return it. To stay focused on what is SL+M enough for me. Collecting camera is not a good solution either…
    I have a question if I may: what camera do you have as a backup when you work professionally?
    Thanks again for your video

    I've had my Q2 for over 18 months and it's been an amazing experience. I use it every day and not once have I regretted my purchase. You keep saying that the Q3 is a "point and shoot" camera. It isn't. Of course you can use it in that way but don't expect perfect results by shooting with everything in fully automatic mode. What's the point for such an expensive camera? And such a waste of potential! A Q can be a fully manual experience. I've never used my Q2 with everything set to automatic and never will. At some point you should be shooting in at least in a partial manual mode to have some control with what you're doing.

      Isn’t that true of any camera these days? Can’t you just set it and forget it with a Sony, Canon, or Nikon? In fact, I would argue that the manual focus tab on the Q-series lenses encourages users to not use it as a point and shoot. It’s funny how people see the Q cameras as the “lesser Leica”. 🙄

    I never really felt that Leica was pitching it as a point and shoot. They're pretty good at making cameras specific to a type of shooter. That's kinda their entire deal. The deliberately fantastic manual shooting experience. The tapering down of external controls except for those related to manual shooting. To me it feels like the pitch is "a leica, but with some creature comforts;" rather than "a point and shoot leica." Indeed, to use it as a point and shoot leaves a lot of quality and functionality behind. If theres one thing Leica doesn't do, it's encourage their base to compromise quality and- even more so- experience.

    • @ForeverBrooklynNYC
      @ForeverBrooklynNYC ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Couldn't agree with you more. I hate that "fixed lens camera" is so often viewed as "point and shoot" by camera reviewers. A Leica Q3 has all the functionality of any other high quality full-frame mirrorless camera ... except interchangeable lenses. "Point and shoot" doesn't even come close to doing the Q3 justice

    • @GajanBalan
      @GajanBalan  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This camera was made an extension to the smartphone experience which is point and shoot. From the lens perspective to the autofocus, the goal was to create something that was easy to use but had some Leica differentiators. This is not just me saying this, it’s from Leica themselves.

    I wonder what the margins on Leica cameras are, compared to the cameras they “compete” with. Sonys canons and Nikons are hand made too, so I wonder if a Leica costs more because they cost so much more to make or if they simply want to appear luxurious.

    • @GajanBalan
      @GajanBalan  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If I had to guess, I imagine the margins are higher but significantly so. The materials, low-automation, skilled labour based in Europe, and complexity of the nice products are what largely contribute to these prices.

  • @lensman5762
    @lensman5762 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Leica Qs are firmly and squarely marketed at the people who use Fuji X100 series of cameras, but want something really upmarket and sophisticated. I also firmly believe that 24MP was the peak of what could be used with a manual focus rangefinder camera without the use of the LV, which would be defeating the whole point of buying a rangefinder. 47MP, 60MP etc, are just too much resolution for a manual focus camera. Leica Q addresses this problem, plus that Q2 and Q3 have IBIS. It is not for everyone, but if you could afford it, it is no brainer.

      @@GajanBalan when Nikon D800 came out, everyone was talking about its 37 MP sensor. Soon after they started to complain that the results were not as sharp as they expected. It took a while for the penny to drop, that with a 37 MP sensor, you really have to hold the camera rock solid. Then, they all went for lenses with VR. M11 has a 60 MP sensor and range finder manual focusing. I leave you to decide if handholding it will give you any real benefit over a 24 MP sensor.

    With moving subject Q is better. Street photo is a bit forgiving in nailing sharp focus but photographing pets and moving human portrait the Q is more effective I would say. M makes you harder to get a shot, which you enjoy and feel challenging and once you got it you feel rewarding but your subject or a model might need to work longer to wait for your challenging enjoyment. That’s why I perceived photos made with M is mostly stagnant subject or street and some scenes. Rarely you see toddlers running towards camera shot or some action shot. I mean I can nail sharp focus on my dachshund running towards me with my M240 and M10M at f1.4, but it requires 5 shots to get one sharp by not looking at the LCD and just laying my camera at ground level, sometimes need more than 5 attempts. With my Q2, a few shots is all it takes at f1.7 and for sure guarantee there’ll be a few is tack sharp.

    I just sold my Leica Q3 two days ago. I have been Leica M users almost 10 years. My journey starts from M9, MM, M262, M10 and now M11. I also have experience with SL2-S. I love SL2-S very much but it is just too big and heavy for me so I sold it. I decide to add Q3 to my arsenal because I want to have a nice compact auto focus camera with images of Leica Look. But Q3 is not. I have Summicron 28mm f2 so I can compare iamge with Q3's 28mm f1.7. How Q3 render images is like Japanese camera with very sharp lens (I am also Sony user for my work). Why do I keep $6,000 camera that give me images like camera that is cheaper 3 times and comes with much better focus system. So my decision to sell Q3 is very easy.

    I sold my Q3 and would not recommend anyone purchase this camera mainly for 4 reasons. 1. This camera digitally crops its raw images causing a slight distortion in the corners-which affected corner sharpness so much that my Viltrox lens was sharper. 2. Jpegs are not good (vs the competition) on this camera- Say what you want about shooting jpeg, a point and shoot needs to have good Jpegs because I'm not trying to edit all my photos while traveling. 3. While seemly built like a tank, this camera feels a bit cheap- The OIS annoyingly rattles every time you move the camera and the lcd scratches easily. 4. Autofocus is below average- It's a sub 6k point and shoot, I expect at the very least average autofocus.
    Forget about value, all things equal (same photographer) most sub 3k camera combos (with lenses) would smoke this in terms of performance. I love Leica as a brand, but I honestly think they're really falling behind here. The only justification for owning this is wanting to shoot a Leica (which is fine), but they used to make class leading cameras.
    I think it's important to be honest about the shortcomings of this camera because Leica is at a tipping point where they need to do something different or they'll fall behind. You can already see it in the resale market.

      I hear you, and some of the things you mentioned are definitely concerns for a type of photographer. Others are a subjective.
