Today, I was delivering and setting up a large grandfather clock for a man from Staten Island, his accent reminded me of you, Scout Crafter. I work at a clock and watch repair shop in Western Kentucky. Our shop has been run by one family since 1902 and still has most of the german and swiss tools from the early 1900s. Can’t beat the quality.
Enjoyed the video! You are correct about bamboo being a weed. It grows like crazy here in Eastern N.C. where I live. I've seen it grow up over 10 feet high and 6 inch thick diameter. I'm surprised someone doesn't grow it for commercial farming and use it for making furniture and stuff. Walmart sells bamboo toothbrushes now. The uses for it are vast.
What a great stress reliever this hobby. After a long day of nothing going right at work I can go into my basement and make something look just the way I want it to. No right or wrong just however I feel that day. I can't wait until my daughter is a little older. I want to start doing projects with her.
And remeber, bamboo is type of grass!!! Love a good pair of Uticas, a lot of great tools came from NY area back in the day!! Thanks for sharing and take care!
Saw a bamboo forest in Hawaii and let me tell you , when the wind blew through that forest the sound was mesmerizing. Could not leave. Thanks for the video.
My father planted bamboo at his house (in NY) for year round privacy. It grows super tall and dense. He cut a bunch at the base because they were spreading too much. Good luck getting the roots out! He found that the birds LOVE to sleep in the bamboo at night. Also, when it snows heavy, he has to knock the snow off. The tops of the bamboo bend incredibly well with the weight of the snow.
Not much bamboo up here at 55degN, John, but a few years ago our local plant nursery had a Japanese display with huge bamboo poles, so when it was dismantled I got a 10ft length of 5in diameter, with the intention of making bamboo brush pots or mahjong tiles. Made a brush pot and a few replacement tiles, but there's still 9ft of project waiting there!
We had a type of very invasive bamboo in NW PA. It would never harden after cut like the stuff they grow in Florida. If you tried to harvest and use it, it became thin and weak as it dried out. Love the Utican tools. Good crafysmanship. Nice restore on these John.
Those pliers turned out so nice. I tried growing some bamboo in a small garden. Looked great until it started to spread. I had to pull it all up and I still have to keep an eye out for new growth.
I guess it didn't occur to me that bamboo would grow that well in NY. I thought it was more of a tropical plant, but you showed how hardy it is. On the central Oregon coast, if you plant it, all you have to do is stand back and watch it. Great way to screen your property. A contractor friend who installs floors told me bamboo flooring is nearly indestructable. Beautiful job on those Utica pliers. Needle nose pliers are very useful to me, and your restored example looks drop-dead fantastic.
Nice, I have a soft spot in my heart for pliers...I have more pliers in my shop than anything! We dont have any bamboo in Michigan that Ive ever seen. It sure is a fascinating plant. Super strong and durable! I had'nt seen bamboo in my lfe until I went to Tennessee and ran across some years ago. It was green and growing in a large patch. I decided I wanted a hunk to take home and maybe make something out of it...so I went over and grabbed a stalk not much different than the size of a pencil with both hands and attempted to break off the stalk in the middle with everything I had in me as a younger man at the time. It was sooo tough! It didnt hardly bend at all. Needless to say, it won and I went home without a hunk of bamboo!
Just my stands of giant maiden grass! It gets about 12-15 feet high and clumps nicely. It's really pretty as a plant, it's easy to maintain, and doesn't spread very fast. A 4ft-6ft circle of them looks really nice. The "wood" from it is a little tough to work with though. Brittle and tough to cut, splinters and a little fragile. But looks great! Lol nice helmet! Those pliers look nice too!
Bamboo is actually classed as a grass. 🤔 We have it here in Florida. Can be invasive. As was mentioned by others it can be difficult to work with. Have two split bamboo fly rods. Incredibly strong. Thank you as always!
There's nothing like vintage steel. I have been wanting to pick up a sears needle nose. They are made of good steel and were made in Japan. There's something so nice about a good set of pliers.
Love the restore scoutcrafter. I find those every now and again at estate sales here in California. Problem is after I restore them I keep them. I have so many tools as a result of that LOL!
Bamboo is very tempting. Lots of positive attributes. Sort of like having a pet spitting pit viper. Took me 2 (TWO!) years to get rid of the stuff I planted. Had to dig up part of my neighbors yard. The roots are so tough an axe will bounce off of them. The roots wiped out the entire flower bed down the side of my house. Had to use a pick axe and a roto-tiller. Damn tiller was bucking like a mule. Oh, and I really like bamboo. Nice pliers.
Hey John! Put a visor on the helmet and use it as face protection and to keep your head warm when it's cold. You might get some sound dampening to boot. Personally, I'll take a visor over safety glasses/goggles any day. Love the channel BTW!
I'm always amazed at what I can find at the poor man's flea market! Many years ago my brother and I were walking around near the Verrazano Bridge and found a perfect aquarium stand for my 50 gallon aquarium. Big, heavy wrought iron thing. Perfect size.
I have bamboo all over the place. Have walls of it (live) around my house. Thick enough you can't see past/through them. Interesting stuff. Saw a shoot of it grow up once a day in my walks to the post office. Can confirm, 1.5-2' a day. Directly around the house...have sugar cane. 1 week, it grows about 5'-6' Crazy stuff!
Real nice job as always and I especially like the number stamping on those pliers it really looks clean and crisp and is very legible, so easy on the eyes very well done don’t have to strain to read that wow!
Many years ago there was a bamboo grove in my town. There was a guy who used it to make fly rods. His fly rods now are collector items. I don't know if the grove is still there because it's private property. Occasionally, there are ads from CL Norwich for bamboo. Good Luck, Rick
Those needle nose are awesome! The black handles turned out great! That enamel paint is tough but if you handle it before it cures, it messes it up. Happy Wednesday! Stay safe!
Hi John, your election is on 24/7 here in Australia too. THE BIG DON had his bottom lip out yesterday.😥 Funny how you are doing a pair of long nose pliers as just yesterday I found my favourite pair out in the back yard. I have been looking for them for six months and they’re the same finish as your Utica’s so you can imagine the rust “patina” they have now. It shouldn’t take me long to remove the “patina” and get them back to looking good. It’ll also teach me to be more careful where I leave things in future.😂😂😂
Regarding bamboo, you can get fargesia robusta, which is a clumping bamboo and does NOT spread like metastatic cancer. You can plant it in a small area with great results!
Spending time in the shop is usually the best part of my week. Usually my son is out there with me so he gets real life, hands on experience and learning. Every time we get to go out there its always like midnight before we even think about checking the time. Hence the name of my channel. Do you have music on while you work in the shop? We always have the radio or a record playing while we're out there. Yes we have an old furniture sized console stereo system we garbage picked. It all works, even the 8-track player! I have a nice selection of old records to play, but my son's favorite is Billy Joel Glass Houses. What can I say other than he has good taste in music. I wore out that cassette I had when I was a younger man.
There is a kind of bamboo called Long Island bamboo that grows over by me and especially way out East. An interesting thing about the name of the plant bamboo, is that it may be onomatopoeiac for what would happen if you were to use it in a fire. It’s name is essentially the sound of the exploding chambers. BamBoo!!💥 I have a few vintage Utica tools and their steel was superb
Great job... They turned out perfect - better than new. Near the end of the video you used the word 'hobby' and it reminded me that some time ago you responded to one of my comments and mentioned you have a HAM Radio license. You should do a video on the equipment you have used in the past - I'm sure many of your viewers would enjoy that. Michael from Canada VA6XMB
I always get nervous when you go from the wire wheel finish to the belt sander finish and it never fails right after i say "i dont think itll get any better" you do the end result and it looks great seeing these old tools go back to how theyd have been sold is just crazy compared to how ive always seen them in dad or grandpas garage or the barn or wherever else
Many of these old tools were offered in a “polished” finish. The pliers would have looked just like this when new. They had to be nice because the competition was brutal back then! 😃👍
Great job! I've inherited and picked up quite a few old tools like this over the years. Your comment on Tim's channel led us to your channel. If you'd get a chance to look at our channel, we'd really appreciate it. Thanks!
It’s not even my election John but I was up till 4:30 watching the election and again at 8:30 all day I don’t know what it is but I can’t stop watching it especially when it turns into a shit show🤣👍 Great job on needle nose pliers its always nice to see a good plier restoration 😀👍
I live in Florida and I have a 150 foot bamboo privacy hedge. It grows like cancer here. I didn’t plant it, nor would I, but it provides a thick, healthy barrier between my house and my neighbors. I cut it back at least 4 times a year. Lots of work, but I have no choice at this point. I’d attach pics, but TH-cam doesn’t allow it.
You know what's funny is they say you have to put bamboo in a tub to prevent the roots from creating elsewhere but I have a tree in my yard which does the exact same thing
dig the bambo, first time i saw was 20 yrs back, when i was delivering propane in darien ,westport area in ct......threw some in the truck...planted it at home but it died.
Hey ScoutCrafter, Bamboo is not a weed as such. A weed is an unwanted plant, weeding is the action of removing unwanted plants from a piece of ground. So , if you were growing daffodils and some bluebells also appeared, you would weed out the bluebells. ❤
Spent this last Sunday trying to rip out the stumps of the bamboo they use for lumber. It grew about forty feet high and started to get in the electric lines..utility cut it out but said I had to grind the stumps out..rented a large stump grinder from Home Depot and spent $350 and all day with two guys grinding..of about sixty trees I have about twenty five stumps left..think I will need a backhoe to get the rest..and it does grow fast! But I love it..but not taking it out..
How do you separate plier halves ? do you just press out the middle pin? I want to clean the inside but cannot figure out the proper way to disassemble without beating the vise up or destroying the pliers. plz help
My poor mans flea market is our towns Spring Clean-up weeks. You can put anything you want at the curb, and the town will come around and pick it up for free. I've found some great stuff - my wife hates when I go on my hunts. Some years ago, I furnished my daughters college apartment with my finds. I'm in Orange County - Middletown, NY.
Great little set of pliers scout they came up great I bet you were Tempted to get the old plastidip out for the handles ha ha 😜 Fantastic video god bless America and the president in this trying time take care stay safe 🗽👏👍🙏🇺🇸
Bamboo is really invasive , the parents of my girlfriend have a lot of trouble getting rid of the neighbors shoots .Now there are regulations about how to plant bamboo in Belgium (tubs or concrete) but these were planted before that. Apart from that it is a nice material to work with. cuts easy, straight sow great for lashing . We use this to build shelters when I go camping with my old scouts friends.
There is bamboo all over Chester County, PA. I always thought bamboo was a tropical plant. It’s also all along the right of way of the SEPTA Regional Rail System.
I love needlenose pliers without cutters! I am restoring an old Craftsman benchgrinder p/n: 115.5560. Any ideas where I can find info? It works great as is but, well, you know!
There used to be information on the net about old craftsman power tools and their part numbers.... I never had to use it but I know the parts are still available for things like bearings and such! Great stuff!
@@ScoutCrafter It may be out there, I just can't find it! Believe it or not the bearings appear original and in good shape. One side is sealed and the other has a removeable cover over felt seals that allow easy greasing with minimal disassembly.
Hi Scout Crafter I got an old pair of needle nose pliers like those in perfect shape with the little wire cutters for $3. the problem is every time I see good pliers in good shape and cheep I get them I have so many pairs its crazy can only use one pair at a time. I once got a bamboo plant in a flower shop it hardly grew I must have been doing something wrong .
I have some bamboo plants around my pond but they are not an invasive type of bamboo. They are called clumping bamboo and they only grow to 4 or 5 feet tall, but then again they might grow taller as I trim them like a shrub. Since bamboo is considered invasive I don't think technically you can be planting it wherever you want. But who is going to check up on this type of thing? I've seen over on Fire Island that many people use bamboo as a privacy fence. They grow so thick and tall that they create a wall that you can't see through nor walk through.
Nice cleanup on the pliers. John you certainly had the wrong job. You would have loved the DS. I was on the job before the advent fo plastic bags and everyone used garbage cans. We used to say every can was an adventure! I found so much stuff: money, gold jewelry, old coins etc.
Frank- My Buddy Nick Cirello worked for DS and told me some great stories! He said some lady always threw away all her change... 😂😂😂😂 Coffee money every week!
Go to Vietnam. it grows there up to 9 inches in diameter and 3 ft a day in the rain forests. We used Winchester Model 12 - 12 ga shotguns when on pint as the M16 5.56mm bullets would bounce off and the 00 buckshot would not.
Poor man`s flea market!! My mom would have loved that term! Better than just plain old garbage picking, which she was the queen of!! And next election I think I`ll write you in Scout!!
Yes! It was Rustoleum Gloss Black Spray Enamel Paint. I prepped the handles (Friday's Video) and sprayed one heavy coat. Placed over the furnace in a cardboard box to cure for 6 hours.... =D
Plier jaws were in excellent condition.........I have Bamboo, like many things it's NOT invasive in this climate (Michigan), also makes a great *Shop Plant* doesn't need much light, will grow in the basement.........Poor Man's Flea Market is tonight, lot of wealthy people around here, not unusual to see hundreds of dollars of stuff laying by the road.......The local Thrift Shop is only about a mile away so even things like a Helmet that I can easily carry I can just donate to them rather than let go to waste.
Hi John, I am a huge fan of your channel. What is the brand of shellac that you mentioned that you sometimes use for handles such as these? Thanks! Joe
Bamboo is not a wood. It is actually a type of grass, belongs to the family of sweet grass. Bamboo does grow on all continents, except Europe and Antarctica. So we don't have that here growing in the nature. There were stories around during WW2 that the Japanese would use the fast growth of bamboo to torture people: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bamboo_torture
Great positive video, in a less bright day. I'm not an American but things over there reflect on the rest of the west, and things blow over quickly let me tell you. I'm fearing on going lockdowns, obligatory mask and god knows what kind of misery they make up. I'm keeping faith and trust, but it is very hard. For now I'm just really sad. On the other hand I'm doing quite OK with my first ever ball pein hammer restoration, I can't come across popular here, what else would be a good choice? Thank you so much!
John, what is your opinion on dipping the handles ?, you know that “plasti dip” stuff always thought it would be good to use on the handle of adjustable wrenches

Looks great finished and honestly looked great after wire wheel. Beautiful pliers.
Not much bamboo up here at 55degN, John, but a few years ago our local plant nursery had a Japanese display with huge bamboo poles, so when it was dismantled I got a 10ft length of 5in diameter, with the intention of making bamboo brush pots or mahjong tiles. Wow! 5" diameter is huge! The stuff I see here is typically 1.5 inches diameter.... Amazing stuff!
Nice job on the pliers. I have a pair just like those, I cleaned and cold blued.

Bamboo makes a great pole for growing Kentucky Wonder pole beans. And that part about the needle nosed pliers was great too!
Those pliers turned out so nice. I tried growing some bamboo in a small garden. Looked great until it started to spread. I had to pull it all up and I still have to keep an eye out for new growth.
It really is such a beautiful looking plant! 😃👍
Very nice restoration. Just that you painted the handles black made it more like it looked from the factory.
I guess it didn't occur to me that bamboo would grow that well in NY. I thought it was more of a tropical plant, but you showed how hardy it is. Beautiful restoration ! I don’t know what kinda Bamboo grows at our zoo but it’s all over. They cut it a couple times a year though
Great little set of pliers scout they came up great I bet you were
Tempted to get the old plastidip out for the handles ha ha 😜
Fantastic video god bless America and the president in this trying time
take care stay safe 🗽👏👍🙏🇺🇸
Matt- I used PlastiDip on some tools years back and it weren’t durable. 🤔
Awesome
Bamboo is really invasive , the parents of my girlfriend have a lot of trouble getting rid of the neighbors shoots .Now there are regulations about how to plant bamboo in Belgium (tubs or concrete) but these were planted before that. Apart from that it is a nice material to work with. cuts easy, straight sow great for lashing . We use this to build shelters when I go camping with my old scouts friends.
Ben- It’s such a pretty plant when controlled! 😃👍
There is bamboo all over Chester County, PA. I always thought bamboo was a tropical plant. It’s also all along the right of way of the SEPTA Regional Rail System.
I got a couple 70 + year old Uticas. Have you ever heard of a German toolmaker (and importer) of about 100 yrs ago, name of Hallenshied?
No Bruce I haven't! Nothing on Google either! Thanks!
Check out "Grandpa Amu" on yt and see what he does with bamboo and traditional tools, he's amazing.
Billy- I’ve been subscribed to him for quite a while! The funny thing is for a guy who lives in the boonies his production quality blows me away! 😂😂😂👍
In NEPA we have sumac and sometimes bamboo
I seen a Bambo forest in Hawaii, it was remarkable
Utica pliers that were made in Utica NY are as good kline or Snap on wish they were still made like that today
Larry you are so right, their steel and forging was unbeatable. 😃👍
I have a grove, approximately 60x80 up to 3" canes, 30' tall, planted it in 1994 Mount Olive, NJ
@@ScoutCrafter
It may be out there, I just can't find it! Believe it or not the bearings appear original and in good shape. One side is sealed and the other has a removeable cover over felt seals that allow easy greasing with minimal disassembly.
My neighbor planted some as a natural fence.
Nice job on the pliers. Find someone with a kid and give them that helmet, perhaps.
I too had a Bamboo plant in a pot that never grew. 🤔
Where do you get those sanding belts?
what wire brush brand do you use? Got a dewalt one and all it did was shoot wires at me
I have had great luck with Harbor Freight wheels! Very good quality for the price!
Thanks ScoutCrafter. How could you leave that helmet in the trash, wouldn’t be right!
Come on down to Bama I'll show ya a bamboo forrest.😁
I have some bamboo plants around my pond but they are not an invasive type of bamboo. They are called clumping bamboo and they only grow to 4 or 5 feet tall, but then again they might grow taller as I trim them like a shrub. Since bamboo is considered invasive I don't think technically you can be planting it wherever you want. But who is going to check up on this type of thing? I've seen over on Fire Island that many people use bamboo as a privacy fence. They grow so thick and tall that they create a wall that you can't see through nor walk through.
All the websites I see say to plant them in a tub of some sort to avoid having the roots travel... Octavia would have a baby! =D
Coffee money every week!
Go to Vietnam. it grows there up to 9 inches in diameter and 3 ft a day in the rain forests. We used Winchester Model 12 - 12 ga shotguns when on pint as the M16 5.56mm bullets would bounce off and the 00 buckshot would not.
Jim- Of all the climates I think I hate the Jungle the most. I was always wet, damp and miserable! 😂😂😂👍
You should dip or put insulated grips on the handles.
Poor man`s flea market!! My mom would have loved that term! Better than just plain old garbage picking, which she was the queen of!! And next election I think I`ll write you in Scout!!
Can you show what product you used on the handles please?
Yes! It was Rustoleum Gloss Black Spray Enamel Paint. I prepped the handles (Friday's Video) and sprayed one heavy coat. Placed over the furnace in a cardboard box to cure for 6 hours.... =D
He goes out walking after midnight, shopping in the moonlight... He goes out walking :-))
Bambo come naturally with a matt finish that wont show fingerprints.
Where do you find Abe Elias belts?
Hi Paul! Abe is a well known knife maker and a good friend of the channel! He has a website and is really a great guy! www.dskw.ca/abrasives.php
We have poor mans flea market twice a week here in FL. Got some great finds. Abundance of thrift stores, restores etc. Nice restoration.
Hi John,
I am a huge fan of your channel. What is the brand of shellac that you mentioned that you sometimes use for handles such as these?
Thanks!
Joe
Hello Josef! Bulls Eye brand by Zinsser... =D
ScoutCrafter Thanks so much for responding. I will try it!
Did not know you could use it on metal. Very helpful!
Bamboo is not a wood. It is actually a type of grass, belongs to the family of sweet grass. Bamboo does grow on all continents, except Europe and Antarctica. So we don't have that here growing in the nature.
There were stories around during WW2 that the Japanese would use the fast growth of bamboo to torture people:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bamboo_torture
That is CRAZY! 😳😧😖
Alex- So many times in history things have to get worse before they get better. 😃👍
And just like that, you get schooled in bamboo while you school us in tool restoration. Ain't sharing knowledge grand? Thanks, John. Jim
Who would have thought so many people have experience in Bamboo!! =D
John, what is your opinion on dipping the handles ?, you know that “plasti dip” stuff
always thought it would be good to use on the handle of adjustable wrenches
Hi Frank- I never had luck with it. Not durable and it never felt right in my hands. Now Klein-Koats are the way to go!
bambo is a grass. it grows good in the desert
