From Paint to Scissors: Creating Beautiful Abstract Art with Acrylic Inks and Oil Pastels

- In this intuitive painting workshop, we explore the use of acrylic inks and oil pastels to create stunning abstract pieces. We begin with the free-flowing process of intuitive painting, using a combination of water and acrylic inks to create beautiful patterns and color blends. Then, we add creative mark-making with Matt Graphite, oil pastels, and gold mica ink to add depth and dimension to our pieces.
But the fun doesn't stop there! We also take our big pieces and do some fun cutting up to create well-designed abstract pieces that can stand alone or be combined to create a larger piece. By the end of the class, you'll have a better understanding of abstract art techniques and how to use them to create beautiful, unique pieces. I love making abstracts. But I don't use watercolor paper .... but use lable papers (that are round, square and triangle, etc), and business card stock . It turns out amazingly well.

I believe that is Two Rivers paper, the finest!! Read about its history! I love TR watercolor paper, and yes, it is 100% cotton!

Denise, when I saw the first part of this video I thought the painting was turning into a hot mess, but then when you used the frames to isolate parts, and did the additional embellishments they turned out beautifully. I love your style, and your enthusiasm! I'd love to see more of your paint swatch book, maybe a video showing each page, with what types of paints were used, etc. Really enjoy all of your videos!

If I am scared of ruining a piece, I photocopy it and try different colours on the copy to see what works best for me.

I just love watching you create and having so much fun. I tried this abstract art last week and loved it, can't wait to make more! Can you tell me the sizes of the two photo mats you were using? Would love to find that to help when deciding sizes.
I had a 5”x7” and 3 1/2” x 5” mats I was using in this. I need to cut myself or go get a few more sizes - but those work out great! 😊

If you don't mind me asking, which Sennelier oil pastel set do you have? I'm can't do a full set, but am thinking a 24 set might be a good place to start. I know Sennelier has a lot of set options I have an inexpensive set of Mungyo Gallery oil pastels that are water soluble, but the Senneliers look much more buttery.
I have the 24 set… truly loved it so much and had it for a while that I finally got the 72 piece set. They are so buttery and the colors are beautiful. Start with the smaller set! 😊
By the way - those artist sponges, you can buy sponges like that for washing cars at the dollar store, they come about 3x5". Also, I went to Jackson's for the paper, but have you heard of CheapJoe's or Jerry's Artorama?
The wallpaper sponges are like the art sponges too! Just a bit bigger. I definitely use cheap joes and Jerry’s. Both are fantastic. Blick is good too. 😊
Do you prep your paper with gesso before you paint?
I do not prep the surface on these paintings but there are plenty of things I do add gesso to if the paper is delicate, or a wood surface, or a surface not meant for the type of paint I'm adding. Watercolor paper works well for watercolors and acrylics with out it. 😊
