As short as possible: 1. Remove the Sena remote control from the left handle and magically you will start to reach turn signals. 2. The bike is not heavy, especially when you ride. Try a Honda Goldwing or K1600 and you will notice the difference immediately. 3. Don't be afraid of the weight of that bike, and you will reach the point where the curves with that bike are great. Read a bit regarding Telelever front suspension, it's the best for curves 4. If outside is close to water freeze you will suddenly love the fact that you don't feel the wind :) It's a matter of weather conditions.
The RT is the best sport touring bike that I’ve ever owned and I’ve put the kms on to prove it. The RT carves corners beautifully and it’s never a problem to ride to the tires edge. Wind protection is fantastic and the adjustable screen gives you pretty much exactly what you want/need. Ride an entire day in the pouring rain or zero degrees and tell me that the RT doesn’t give you enough wind…
This is not light bike at all, but if you have some skill, you will be able to control it easily. But when you ride fully loaded bike it’s not easy, especially when road becomes crap!
I don't believe you actually rode that bike at one point in the video. You seem tho ride it in the US one moment and suddenly you are driving on the other side of the road in the UK... You say the motorcycle is too heavy, I can assure you as soon as the wheels start turning it is just like a sports bike so light. You’re probably better off riding a scooter or a Solex…
I don't mind criticism of the RT. It doesn't sway my belief that it is one of the best. But these complaints seem odd from someone who thought they were buying the dream bike. I fantasized about the RT for years before trying it. When I test rode it finally, it was exactly as I had imagined, only better.
I have a 2023, and had a 2020 RT before that. Here's my thoughts after a trip (My video link too). The Pros : Overall the bike runs great with plenty of power (except in E-Co, not good for passing). I averaged around 50 MPG. The handling was great, even with a heavy load. The suspension soaks up the bumps like a pro. I'm using a Werks Quite-Ride windscreen, and liked being able to hear the bikes speakers at highway speeds, the stock screen had too much buffeting for me. The lighting was great for seeing down the road, (the road lights didn't seem to make much of a difference in lighting up the road, but are good for people to see you). The brakes always felt strong and powerful. The Cons : The navigation is a bust, (I used a Garmin Zumo XT instead, ease of use, and it always works) when you scroll the RT's navigation to make it bigger, the roads get bigger, but not the print, (not helpful for my 58 year old eyes), it also looses the WiFi signal, and is just is too much trouble. This was something I was most excited for, but has turned into my biggest disappointment with the bike, sadly. Not having stand alone gauges, (if you listen to the audio system, to change a station you have to be on that screen, and you lose the tachometer. I do miss the analog gauges of my old 2020 RT. The Adaptive Cruise Control works fine, but at its farthest setting you're just too close (not bad at slow speeds, but a different story above 50 MPH, way too close for comfort). It also misses other riders if staggered in front of you. Another thing I noticed was, if it picks up a vehicle and slows you down, if it's very curvy it can lose the vehicle in front and accelerate back to speed, but the vehicle is still there, dangerous!!! The Bluetooth that always steals the signal from my Cardo unit, (I listen to the bikes audio on the speakers, and my music on my phone to the Cardo, forcing me to play around with the phone to get it play on the Cardo, just ridiculous. The quick shifter DOESN'T disengage the cruise control, (My 2020 RT did and you would start slowing down in the lower gear) not the case with the redesign. Riding in the dark WITHOUT illuminated switches sucks, for the money you pay this bike it's unacceptable. I forgot to add that the "original" XM antenna didn't work at all, then I posted some videos showing it dropping the signal, and sent them to BMW in Berlin. Amazingly the next day the dealer (who had my bike for three weeks) told me they would replace the stock one with a Sirrus branded one, it hasn't lost the signal since. th-cam.com/video/ZCVKE74uyqE/w-d-xo.html
Hi. I don't agree with your opinion. #1 BMW RT is big touring motorcycle so it have to be heavy, but comparing it to Yamaha FJR 1300 or Kawasaki GTR 1400, it is much lighter and handy. #2 I see you are using Sena intercom pilot on left side. This is the reason why you are not able to reach turn signal switch. I had te same pilot and I had to find another. This is because BMW use this control wheel on left side. It dake additional space. #3 It is big and quite heavy bike. It will not turn the same way as much lighter and quicker one. You need to learn it. #4 You can't have the cake and have the cake in the same time. Maybe you need more breathable clothing or flip-up helmet. In my case it works even in 35 degre of Celsus. I'm owner of BMW R1200RT from 5 years now. I've ride on it over 62.000km and it is still the best touring bike in my oppinion. I will change for some time it but only on newer model of BMW RT 🙂

If you find it so heavy and you can’t reach the indicator signal. I think you must be too small for the bike. Go find something that suits you better. Personally i think they are one of the best bikes around. I’m on my forth , but to each their own

Well, Ma Rian, guess you've upset a few boxer fans here. Can't agree with your complaints at all. I'm well used to big boxers, and my 2022 R1250RT is the best of all the models I've ever owned. I've had 8 in total, in 50 years of biking. My love for the old R100RS (the one with the lighter flywheel and fully hydraulic front brakes) is undiminished, but this latest evolution is just magnificent. There are gripes, but what machine is ever 100% perfect? The centre stand is not properly situated on the R1250RT - on all my older Beemers, if you removed the front wheel, the bike would tip on to the back wheel, and vice versa. On the R1250, take the front wheel out without a jack under the sump, and you're going to have a whoopsy. My phone will not go in the phone cubby - a Samsung 25. (Do I care?) Cleaning the TFT screen is tricky, I use viakal now to remove the rain spots. As good as the 4 favourites buttons are, they're not as good as having switches for the heated seats and bars. I also wish there were paint protectors on the top of the panniers - throwing my old leg over the bike at the start of a ride, and my heel invariably scuffs the pannier. I'm nearly 70 years old, I ain't getter more flexible any time soon. I also find the horn button a tad too close to the indicator switch - I have often beeped someone I'm overtaking instead of hitting the indicator. Nevertheless, I don't believe there's any motorcycle better. My gripes are petty, when you consider how well this machine rides. I get 58mpg in road mode, about 55 in dynamic. Servicing is not expensive, and it's easy to do yourself. It is so easy to ride around town, impeccable on the twisties, and flawless on a motorway. Easy peasy to ride in the rain. And so on. Now for the looks. I'm an ugly old git, but with my helmet on, astride this beast, I'm suddenly handsome. Thank you BMW, this frog is now a prince. (My wife thinks I'm handsome, but only after she's had some wine).
I love the 900 XR as well because it handles so well, but the seat is too hard, and there is little wind protection. I bought a new RT and love it. It is heavier, but Ive learned to ride it hard on mountain roads. The RT is much faster, has a shaft drive, telelever front and paralever rear and is the best all around bike made in my opinion. If you don't go on longer rides and don't need paniers, and love to go fast around corners, the XR is probably the best bike for you, just get a better seat.
Are you quite a small person? If so, I can understand your disappointment with the bike. It's definitely better for bigger people. I'm six feet and 210lbs (medium size?) and it feels perfect - although I need to take care when I'm pushing it in and out of my garage. The fairing makes it heavier up top than my R1200R which I used to sling around like a 250. The pay-off for that though, is good weather protection - your head must have been below the screen even on its lowest setting which makes me think you're quite short. I adjust the screen so it's level with the tip of my nose. That means I look over it but catch enough wind to keep cool and remind myself I'm on a bike. The overall weight of the machine (279kg) is marginally less than the Japanese competition (Kawasaki Concourse, Yamaha FJR, Honda Pan). It's obviously much lighter than a Harley tourer although Harleys have much lower seats and lower ground clearance which in one way makes them better for smaller riders. Handling-wise this beemer is very nimble, when you get used to it it will easily out-perform the 900 you're more used to, you just need to acclimatise. Anyhow, I hope you find your perfect bike, or at least one you're happy with. Cheers!
In some of the shots, you have something attached to the left grip, between your hand and the control wheel. Is this why you can't get to the turn signal switch? The RT's grips and controls are just like most BMWs including the GS, F900XR, etc. As for the lack of wind, I do agree on that one.
It's for the Sena bluetooth helmet comms system. Ditch it and get a Cardo. Much better system and uses voice control instead of a silly handlebar attachment
Rt is awesome bike, but I can admit some things I don’t like. Vibes after whole day of riding, seat is not comfortable enough. Wind protection is great, but when you ride it in turbulence, you don’t feel it directly, but bike becomes unstable. And one more thing: i am not happy about original navigation!
Your point seem to be what others also say about the rt. Don’t be afraid to use your own video. I’ve seen the exact clips from another TH-camr. Shameful.
You can get a new windshield with an adjustable vent to manage the ventilation, depending the conditions. This is an absolute must for this bike. After all these years of RT models, why has BMW not figured this out. The good news is that there is a workaround. Handling the weight on switchbacks is an acquired skill that must be developed... not the the bikes fault. In order to have this kind of smooth plush ride, you need some weight. Consider that this bike is just around 200 lbs lighter than the Goldwing. Gord

I’ve owned a 2016 RT before and am considering another one. I’m always trying to stay subjective and looking for constructive criticism of the bike to help make up my mind. Your dislike list did absolutely nothing to give me pause over buying another RT. I knew it was going to be hard to stay with your video after your first complaint of it being heavy (much lighter than anything in its class), but I muscled through it anyway. So, this was pretty much a waste of my time to watch video .. sorry
I have an ‘09 RT, ‘94 RS, a Triumph T100 and Honda Valkyrie: The problem is not with your RT; it’s just not for you and your style of riding. I rode a 1250RT through the Southern French Alps with wife last Fall. It was downright hairy on the super sharp curves, yet it held the gear for both of us and had great wind coverage for 40-80 degree temperatures. Here in the States, my 1200RT is an excellent overall tourer.
I completely agree with you...the bike is excellent, just I prefer something else....most curves were fine...U turn style roads were not as smooth as with XR
@@ma_rian_the_rider It’s like buying a pair of shoes: do you need dress shoes, running shoes, boots or sandals. Do you ride alone or is the wife riding with you, mountain roads, long or short distances, form vs. function, ect. I have been riding since 1972. At 70, I still love to corner, ride fast and ride far…occasionally with my wife. I guess that’s why I have four distinctly different bikes.
Why are you trying to operate any switches with the clutch pulled in? Move your hand operate whatever switch you need to then operate the clutch. Taking a chance of your hand slipping off the clutch.
Good point... normally yes...but sometimes I forget to operate a switch and remember when I hold the clutch lever , for example while standing on a crossing
I bought one, hoping travelling with my wife, but she’s afraid to climb on it. Result: I almost never ride it. When I did, she’s so heavy that U turns are difficult, and when I need to go rear, I have to get out of the bike to push it back (no rear assistance as Golwing has). Its behavior in corners is unusual as it tends to widen the trajectory. It’s value has dropped by half, and I would loose too much selling it. So, I keep it and pay insurance for nothing. Too bad…
Were you able to demo this bike before purchase? A motorcycle should not cause you this much frustration. If so, upgrade said default with one of the many aftermarket accessories to make it your own or be content with the 900. 1. Taking Corners? Watch any one of the hundreds of police rodeo videos on TH-cam; this bike is capable of far more than most owners can give it. Find a motorcycle safety course and work to improve your motorcycle handling skills. This newfound confidence will pay dividends for future safety and riding pleasure, especially on this machine. 2. Wind Protection-The goal is a happy medium, not perfection in all situations. At the end of the day, I would rather have protection than be without it. 3. Weight- After accumulating more miles, you should become more comfortable with the weight. I purchased a 2020R1250RT demo left over in 2021 and already have 22K miles(35K+km) in 17 months of riding. It's a shorter riding season due to Wiinter here in the upper mid-west of the US. Good luck on your creator journey. Avoid falling into the same trap as other creators whose content is the equivalent of reviewing a convertible and then complaining that they get a sunburn, mess up their hair, or get wet when it rains.
Snap! I too test rode a 1250RT, (my long time dream bike) and found to my dismay that it’s deceptively heavy compared to my 1200GS. I also felt as if I was perched on top of the bike and uncomfortably disconnected from everything that was happening. It felt quite unwieldy ! I couldn’t wait to return the bike to the dealer, but to be fair I persevered and covered 20 miles on a mixture of A and B roads as well as a few miles on a dual carriageway. As I road back into the car park, the salesman greeted me with, “You don’t like it do you?” When I asked how he knew, he told me that it was written all over my face how crestfallen I was. Long story short, not everyone likes these bikes! 🏍🏍
Hmmmm. Turn the front wheel before moving the bike off the stand. I hold the laft handle with fingers only when using indicators, not the full palm. This bike is super flickable so my view on cornering is different but fine. Perhaps you need to work more through turns. I love the windshield 🙂 Get a shorter one if it doesn’t suit you 🙂. But ultimately I am with you. For example, I love the look of the R9T and wanted to like it so much….yet I don’t. I test rode it and it was horrible for me. Back onto my S1000XR or my…..RT! 🙂
Interesting. Most reviewers say you don’t feel the weight because it is down low and for the same reason it corners quite well and is great in the twisties, so I’m puzzled by all your negatives. I have a 1200r and love the handling, yeah it’s heavy but not significantly more than other bikes in the class and for me it is so well balanced that the extra weight isn’t an issue at all. No problems reaching the signal on the R. Good luck finding the right bike for you but you are the only fellow being so negative about this machine.
It is interesting that you all think I am being negative about this machine 🙂....I am not.!!!!..I understand you all have tendency to defend your choice and it is ok...but please LISTEN CAREFULLY what I say in the video 😉 All I said was that I thought it was my dream bike, but after testing it I found out that actually I needed a different style of bike. Regarding weight and handling in corners....I drove it straight after I tested F900XR...and so I immediately felt the difference in both areas....and you must agree that smaller and lighter F900XR is more agile than RT....it's pure physics....NO HATE....pure fact. I ADMIRE RT a lot...it is amazing machine...it is just me needing something else.... That's all. 😀 Have a nice day
As another commenter noted, the bike you reviewed seemed to have an optional part on the left grip, to the outboard side of the wonderwheel. What was that? Something related to your helmet communicator? My 2019 does not have that extra piece, and I have no issues whatsoever reaching the directional switch with my hand firmly on the left grip. Yes the bike is heavier than some, but lighter than other cruisers. In my opinion, it's a great compromise between being responsive and stable on the highway. I've ridden heavier bikes (for example, the K1600) and lighter bikes (for example, Kawasaki Versys), but I love my R1250RT. In my opinion, the only thing lacking on the 2019 is poor integration of Nav, phone, etc. with the bike. BMW is many years behind the curve in the "infotainment" category. I am a smaller rider than you (178cm/79 kg/ 67 years old) and have absolutely no issues handling the bike on spirited mountain roads or standing the bike up from the sidestand. Personally, I love the RT, in part for its ability to chew through the miles and for it's huge fuel tank and therefore range. It's plenty responsive for my taste. I've never had an issue with not having ample wind to keep me cool; I just keep the windscreen lower and wear a mesh armor jacket.

Man this passion about motorcycles is something else! Sometimes we love to look at them but the experience can turn it into another totally different self feeling. It happens a lot. I suspect that it was what happened with you. And I understand what you are saying. This motorcycles are totally different from each other. They can do almost the same but with different levels of achievement. One is heavier and is made to munch miles. The other is more nimble carved to the city riding or not so fast roads. Both can do both jobs but in terms of efficiency, the environment where you choose to ride them has a word to say about the fulfillment of the ride. It is a certain fact. I’ve ridden the BMW 1250 RT through a motorway for about five hours and it was an excellent trip. But I had to go out of the motorway to a local village to stop have dinner and sleep .At night light, I found my self in an unknown place with tiny streets, very irregular pavement, with full luggage and a passenger in the pillion seat and it started to rain. I had to apply my self on my low speed maneuverability skills, but with that big Elephant bike some of it was a little risky. That moment wasn’t a pleasant ride😅

(Non of my business, but the riding footage you posted, the white bike with the Sena on the bar is not you. It’s actually is copy written material from the @TheSmoaksVlogs. Careful you don’t get sued)
Well you could just replace the windshield with one that has a vent. I'm only 5 05ft tall so I always have to customize a bike to make it work for me. The issues you have are completely solvable, and that is a great bike. I'm currently riding a 2018 K1600gtl. It's a big boy but the weight disappears as soon as you start moving.
I preferred the old signal system button on each side for turning right or left. Not a fan of the Japanese design signal unit. The actual signals on the non North American bikes are useless, some say dangerous, American testing road safety authority has banned them from the US market.
I am watching your video, and none of your reasons make any sense. I have an RT and is not heavy at all, it is great for cornering, wind protection can be adjusted. Maybe you are looking for something completely different, like a Vespa maybe.
For me, 1. The appearance is ugly, all the lines and surfaces are twisted and broken. 2. There are too many functions that exceed the needs of use, so that you have to think about its functions all the time and reduce the pleasure of riding. 3·Quality, unclear.
What height are you? Perhaps you’re not tall enough for this bike. I have a current model RT, and I can only think that it’s to do with your physiology. I’m 6ft (1.83m) and I have bad arthritis in both hands. I have no problem operating any hand controls, let alone the indicators. When I had extended test rides and in the early months of my ownership, I did find some of the controls difficult to get to. However, as I’m used to the bike and more so my fingers and hands are, there’s no problem. I had a 2007 model year K1200S from new at the end of 2006. It, like all BMWs of that era had separate paddles on each handle bar for left and right indicators. This was a great set up because you were naturally turning your bars in the direction and the paddles were big! Some journalists who were used to riding cheap Japanese machinery couldn’t get their heads around it and BMW saw it as a negative sales feature. So on the K1300S and all later bikes they fitted what I consider, the inferior all in one indicator switch. As for the weight, if you relax and have good clutch/throttle/rear brake, it’s never an issue. The Police use these bikes all over the World because of their agility and manoeuvrability. The only issue is moving it, when standing beside it. However, for me, I know that’s my poor technique not the weight of the bike because it has a very low centre of gravity and perfect weight distribution. I suggest you need more time on it and to relax. I know when I went for my first test ride on it, it was my first ride of a bike for 9 years. I was very tense, and did find the bike awkward, but after 2 or 3 more test rides and thinking whilst relaxing, it became an easy bike to ride. As far as wind protection, at 183cm tall, with the standard seat in the high position, I get wind flow in my face with the screen in the lowest position. The RT is not for everyone, that’s why BMW (and all manufacturers) make a plethora of models. I’d not buy a bike without a shaft drive, but that’s because I do loads of all weather miles whilst commuting to London. If you’re only out in good weather (mostly) a chain is more efficient and cheaper to maintain (if it goes wrong….mind if it goes wrong, you probably won’t be buying a new chain, more likely you’re relatives will be scraping you off the road). BNWs are great bikes whichever you buy. They’re not cheap to service, but the quality is superb. Good luck with the XR.

It sounds like your objections were first observed after purchase. Did you take an actual test ride before purchase? Did you observe what you liked and what you disliked during that test ride? Every poster I have observed regarding 1200/1250 RTs has expressed their likes/dislikes during their post. I'm surprised you didn't know ahead of time it was heavy, etc. You're comparing 482 lb and 615 lb bikes. The latter should feel "heavier" because it is, by about 1/3 more in fact. The rest of your dislikes sound like you didn't pay attention to what the bike had to offer and what others have said in reviewing it. Am I defending it? No. Do I own one? No. Would I like to own one? Yes, of course, but I can't afford it. Another commenter suggested you get a bike better suited to your size. I agree.
Overall a great touring bike, and the power, smoothness and handling for a bike it’s size is intoxicating. It’s heavier than the RT and the CG is probably higher. I hadn’t ridden the RT, so I can offer no direct comparison. Worth a test ride!
NT looks and feels cheaper than RT, but that is OK because there is a big price difference. NT is lighter and easier to maneuver. Regarding power, no big difference IMHO. RT has better wind protection for upper body...legs protection feels similar to me. I liked RTs display more, not saying NT has a bad one...it was OK with me. Considering my riding style I would choose NT, if I was after image and electronic gadgets I would take RT....of course price difference is quite considerable
You can't reach the indicator switch with that additional non OEM piece (what is it?) mounted to left grip and blame BMW for it. Seriously? The switch is originally exactly as wide from the handle as on the other bike you prefer.
@@ma_rian_the_riderIt’s not a problem with the location of the turn signal switch - the problem is the location of the left hand on the left handle. There is something attached on the left handle that moves the left hand about 2 inches further left, away from the turn signal switch. That thing is not supposed to be there and it’s the reason you had such a hard time reaching the turn signal. The left hand is just pushed too far to the left. I don’t know what thing is installed on that left handle. What is it?
My gosh, you have something else on the left grip that spaces your hand further away from the signal lever.... that's on you, not BMW. Such nit picking. It's a fabulous bike that must not fit your riding wants.

I agree I even changed to a bigger screen,Yes she is a pig to ride two up below 12 mph after that even loaded panniers and top box meaning less.

Great....enjoy the bike....well sometimes you imagine something but at the end, reality is different...it is normal.... happened to me many times

I have a 2023, and had a 2020 RT before that. Here's my thoughts after a trip (My video link too).
The Pros : Overall the bike runs great with plenty of power (except in E-Co, not good for passing).
I averaged around 50 MPG.
The handling was great, even with a heavy load. The suspension soaks up the bumps like a pro.
I'm using a Werks Quite-Ride windscreen, and liked being able to hear the bikes speakers at highway speeds, the stock screen had too much buffeting for me.
The lighting was great for seeing down the road, (the road lights didn't seem to make much of a difference in lighting up the road, but are good for people to see you).
The brakes always felt strong and powerful.
The Cons : The navigation is a bust, (I used a Garmin Zumo XT instead, ease of use, and it always works) when you scroll the RT's navigation to make it bigger, the roads get bigger, but not the print, (not helpful for my 58 year old eyes), it also looses the WiFi signal, and is just is too much trouble. This was something I was most excited for, but has turned into my biggest disappointment with the bike, sadly.
Not having stand alone gauges, (if you listen to the audio system, to change a station you have to be on that screen, and you lose the tachometer. I do miss the analog gauges of my old 2020 RT.
The Adaptive Cruise Control works fine, but at its farthest setting you're just too close (not bad at slow speeds, but a different story above 50 MPH, way too close for comfort). It also misses other riders if staggered in front of you. Another thing I noticed was, if it picks up a vehicle and slows you down, if it's very curvy it can lose the vehicle in front and accelerate back to speed, but the vehicle is still there, dangerous!!!
The Bluetooth that always steals the signal from my Cardo unit, (I listen to the bikes audio on the speakers, and my music on my phone to the Cardo, forcing me to play around with the phone to get it play on the Cardo, just ridiculous.
The quick shifter DOESN'T disengage the cruise control, (My 2020 RT did and you would start slowing down in the lower gear) not the case with the redesign.
Riding in the dark WITHOUT illuminated switches sucks, for the money you pay this bike it's unacceptable.
I forgot to add that the "original" XM antenna didn't work at all, then I posted some videos showing it dropping the signal, and sent them to BMW in Berlin. Amazingly the next day the dealer (who had my bike for three weeks) told me they would replace the stock one with a Sirrus branded one, it hasn't lost the signal since.

I don't agree with your opinion. #1 BMW RT is big touring motorcycle so it have to be heavy, but comparing it to Yamaha FJR 1300 or Kawasaki GTR 1400, it is much lighter and handy. #2 I see you are using Sena intercom pilot on left side. This is the reason why you are not able to reach turn signal switch. I had te same pilot and I had to find another. This is because BMW use this control wheel on left side. It dake additional space. #3 It is big and quite heavy bike. It will not turn the same way as much lighter and quicker one. You need to learn it. #4 You can't have the cake and have the cake in the same time. Maybe you need more breathable clothing or flip-up helmet. In my case it works even in 35 degre of Celsus.
I'm owner of BMW R1200RT from 5 years now. I've ride on it over 62.000km and it is still the best touring bike in my oppinion. I will change for some time it but only on newer model of BMW RT 🙂

If you find it so heavy and you can’t reach the indicator signal. I think you must be too small for the bike. Go find something that suits you better. Personally i think they are one of the best bikes around. I’m on my forth , but to each their own

Well, Ma Rian, guess you've upset a few boxer fans here. Can't agree with your complaints at all.
I'm well used to big boxers, and my 2022 R1250RT is the best of all the models I've ever owned. I've had 8 in total, in 50 years of biking. My love for the old R100RS (the one with the lighter flywheel and fully hydraulic front brakes) is undiminished, but this latest evolution is just magnificent.
There are gripes, but what machine is ever 100% perfect? The centre stand is not properly situated on the R1250RT - on all my older Beemers, if you removed the front wheel, the bike would tip on to the back wheel, and vice versa. On the R1250, take the front wheel out without a jack under the sump, and you're going to have a whoopsy. My phone will not go in the phone cubby - a Samsung 25. (Do I care?) Cleaning the TFT screen is tricky, I use viakal now to remove the rain spots. As good as the 4 favourites buttons are, they're not as good as having switches for the heated seats and bars. I also wish there were paint protectors on the top of the panniers - throwing my old leg over the bike at the start of a ride, and my heel invariably scuffs the pannier. I'm nearly 70 years old, I ain't getter more flexible any time soon.
I also find the horn button a tad too close to the indicator switch - I have often beeped someone I'm overtaking instead of hitting the indicator.
Nevertheless, I don't believe there's any motorcycle better. My gripes are petty, when you consider how well this machine rides. I get 58mpg in road mode, about 55 in dynamic. Servicing is not expensive, and it's easy to do yourself. It is so easy to ride around town, impeccable on the twisties, and flawless on a motorway. Easy peasy to ride in the rain. And so on.
Now for the looks. I'm an ugly old git, but with my helmet on, astride this beast, I'm suddenly handsome. Thank you BMW, this frog is now a prince.
(My wife thinks I'm handsome, but only after she's had some wine).

I love the 900 XR as well because it handles so well, but the seat is too hard, and there is little wind protection. I bought a new RT and love it. It is heavier, but Ive learned to ride it hard on mountain roads. The RT is much faster, has a shaft drive, telelever front and paralever rear and is the best all around bike made in my opinion. If you don't go on longer rides and don't need paniers, and love to go fast around corners, the XR is probably the best bike for you, just get a better seat.

Are you quite a small person? If so, I can understand your disappointment with the bike. It's definitely better for bigger people. I'm six feet and 210lbs (medium size?) and it feels perfect - although I need to take care when I'm pushing it in and out of my garage. The fairing makes it heavier up top than my R1200R which I used to sling around like a 250. The pay-off for that though, is good weather protection - your head must have been below the screen even on its lowest setting which makes me think you're quite short. I adjust the screen so it's level with the tip of my nose. That means I look over it but catch enough wind to keep cool and remind myself I'm on a bike. The overall weight of the machine (279kg) is marginally less than the Japanese competition (Kawasaki Concourse, Yamaha FJR, Honda Pan). It's obviously much lighter than a Harley tourer although Harleys have much lower seats and lower ground clearance which in one way makes them better for smaller riders. Handling-wise this beemer is very nimble, when you get used to it it will easily out-perform the 900 you're more used to, you just need to acclimatise. Anyhow, I hope you find your perfect bike, or at least one you're happy with. Cheers!
In some of the shots, you have something attached to the left grip, between your hand and the control wheel. Is this why you can't get to the turn signal switch? The RT's grips and controls are just like most BMWs including the GS, F900XR, etc.
As for the lack of wind, I do agree on that one.
The wind protection on the 1250rt is excellent.
It's for the Sena bluetooth helmet comms system. Ditch it and get a Cardo. Much better system and uses voice control instead of a silly handlebar attachment
Rt is awesome bike, but I can admit some things I don’t like. Vibes after whole day of riding, seat is not comfortable enough. Wind protection is great, but when you ride it in turbulence, you don’t feel it directly, but bike becomes unstable. And one more thing: i am not happy about original navigation!
Your point seem to be what others also say about the rt. Don’t be afraid to use your own video. I’ve seen the exact clips from another TH-camr. Shameful.
You can get a new windshield with an adjustable vent to manage the ventilation, depending the conditions.
This is an absolute must for this bike. After all these years of RT models, why has BMW not figured this out.
The good news is that there is a workaround.
Handling the weight on switchbacks is an acquired skill that must be developed... not the the bikes fault.
In order to have this kind of smooth plush ride, you need some weight. Consider that this bike is just around 200 lbs lighter than the Goldwing.

I’ve owned a 2016 RT before and am considering another one. I’m always trying to stay subjective and looking for constructive criticism of the bike to help make up my mind. Your dislike list did absolutely nothing to give me pause over buying another RT. I knew it was going to be hard to stay with your video after your first complaint of it being heavy (much lighter than anything in its class), but I muscled through it anyway. So, this was pretty much a waste of my time to watch video .. sorry
I have an ‘09 RT, ‘94 RS, a Triumph T100 and Honda Valkyrie: The problem is not with your RT; it’s just not for you and your style of riding. I rode a 1250RT through the Southern French Alps with wife last Fall. It was downright hairy on the super sharp curves, yet it held the gear for both of us and had great wind coverage for 40-80 degree temperatures. Here in the States, my 1200RT is an excellent overall tourer.
I completely agree with you...the bike is excellent, just I prefer something else....most curves were fine...U turn style roads were not as smooth as with XR
@@ma_rian_the_rider It’s like buying a pair of shoes: do you need dress shoes, running shoes, boots or sandals. Do you ride alone or is the wife riding with you, mountain roads, long or short distances, form vs. function, ect. I have been riding since 1972. At 70, I still love to corner, ride fast and ride far…occasionally with my wife. I guess that’s why I have four distinctly different bikes.
Why are you trying to operate any switches with the clutch pulled in? Move your hand operate whatever switch you need to then operate the clutch. Taking a chance of your hand slipping off the clutch.
Good point... normally yes...but sometimes I forget to operate a switch and remember when I hold the clutch lever , for example while standing on a crossing
I bought one, hoping travelling with my wife, but she’s afraid to climb on it. Result: I almost never ride it. When I did, she’s so heavy that U turns are difficult, and when I need to go rear, I have to get out of the bike to push it back (no rear assistance as Golwing has).
Its behavior in corners is unusual as it tends to widen the trajectory. It’s value has dropped by half, and I would loose too much selling it. So, I keep it and pay insurance for nothing. Too bad…
Were you able to demo this bike before purchase? A motorcycle should not cause you this much frustration. If so, upgrade said default with one of the many aftermarket accessories to make it your own or be content with the 900.
1. Taking Corners? Watch any one of the hundreds of police rodeo videos on TH-cam; this bike is capable of far more than most owners can give it. Find a motorcycle safety course and work to improve your motorcycle handling skills. This newfound confidence will pay dividends for future safety and riding pleasure, especially on this machine.
2. Wind Protection-The goal is a happy medium, not perfection in all situations. At the end of the day, I would rather have protection than be without it.
3. Weight- After accumulating more miles, you should become more comfortable with the weight. I purchased a 2020R1250RT demo left over in 2021 and already have 22K miles(35K+km) in 17 months of riding. It's a shorter riding season due to Wiinter here in the upper mid-west of the US.
Good luck on your creator journey. Avoid falling into the same trap as other creators whose content is the equivalent of reviewing a convertible and then complaining that they get a sunburn, mess up their hair, or get wet when it rains.

Snap! I too test rode a 1250RT, (my long time dream bike) and found to my dismay that it’s deceptively heavy compared to my 1200GS. I also felt as if I was perched on top of the bike and uncomfortably disconnected from everything that was happening. It felt quite unwieldy ! I couldn’t wait to return the bike to the dealer, but to be fair I persevered and covered 20 miles on a mixture of A and B roads as well as a few miles on a dual carriageway.
As I road back into the car park, the salesman greeted me with, “You don’t like it do you?” When I asked how he knew, he told me that it was written all over my face how crestfallen I was.
Long story short, not everyone likes these bikes! 🏍🏍
Hmmmm. Turn the front wheel before moving the bike off the stand. I hold the laft handle with fingers only when using indicators, not the full palm. This bike is super flickable so my view on cornering is different but fine. Perhaps you need to work more through turns. I love the windshield 🙂 Get a shorter one if it doesn’t suit you 🙂.
But ultimately I am with you. For example, I love the look of the R9T and wanted to like it so much….yet I don’t. I test rode it and it was horrible for me. Back onto my S1000XR or my…..RT! 🙂

Interesting. Most reviewers say you don’t feel the weight because it is down low and for the same reason it corners quite well and is great in the twisties, so I’m puzzled by all your negatives. I have a 1200r and love the handling, yeah it’s heavy but not significantly more than other bikes in the class and for me it is so well balanced that the extra weight isn’t an issue at all. No problems reaching the signal on the R. Good luck finding the right bike for you but you are the only fellow being so negative about this machine.

All I said was that I thought it was my dream bike, but after testing it I found out that actually I needed a different style of bike.
Regarding weight and handling in corners....I drove it straight after I tested F900XR...and so I immediately felt the difference in both areas....and you must agree that smaller and lighter F900XR is more agile than RT....it's pure physics....NO HATE....pure fact.
I ADMIRE RT a lot...it is amazing machine...it is just me needing something else.... That's all. 😀

As another commenter noted, the bike you reviewed seemed to have an optional part on the left grip, to the outboard side of the wonderwheel. What was that? Something related to your helmet communicator? My 2019 does not have that extra piece, and I have no issues whatsoever reaching the directional switch with my hand firmly on the left grip. Yes the bike is heavier than some, but lighter than other cruisers. In my opinion, it's a great compromise between being responsive and stable on the highway. I've ridden heavier bikes (for example, the K1600) and lighter bikes (for example, Kawasaki Versys), but I love my R1250RT. In my opinion, the only thing lacking on the 2019 is poor integration of Nav, phone, etc. with the bike. BMW is many years behind the curve in the "infotainment" category. I am a smaller rider than you (178cm/79 kg/ 67 years old) and have absolutely no issues handling the bike on spirited mountain roads or standing the bike up from the sidestand. Personally, I love the RT, in part for its ability to chew through the miles and for it's huge fuel tank and therefore range. It's plenty responsive for my taste. I've never had an issue with not having ample wind to keep me cool; I just keep the windscreen lower and wear a mesh armor jacket.

Man this passion about motorcycles is something else! Sometimes we love to look at them but the experience can turn it into another totally different self feeling. It happens a lot. I suspect that it was what happened with you. And I understand what you are saying. This motorcycles are totally different from each other. They can do almost the same but with different levels of achievement. One is heavier and is made to munch miles. The other is more nimble carved to the city riding or not so fast roads. Both can do both jobs but in terms of efficiency, the environment where you choose to ride them has a word to say about the fulfillment of the ride. It is a certain fact.
I’ve ridden the BMW 1250 RT through a motorway for about five hours and it was an excellent trip. But I had to go out of the motorway to a local village to stop have dinner and sleep .At night light, I found my self in an unknown place with tiny streets, very irregular pavement, with full luggage and a passenger in the pillion seat and it started to rain. I had to apply my self on my low speed maneuverability skills, but with that big Elephant bike some of it was a little risky. That moment wasn’t a pleasant ride😅

Well you could just replace the windshield with one that has a vent. I'm only 5 05ft tall so I always have to customize a bike to make it work for me. The issues you have are completely solvable, and that is a great bike. I'm currently riding a 2018 K1600gtl. It's a big boy but the weight disappears as soon as you start moving.
I preferred the old signal system button on each side for turning right or left. Not a fan of the Japanese design signal unit. The actual signals on the non North American bikes are useless, some say dangerous, American testing road safety authority has banned them from the US market.

I am watching your video, and none of your reasons make any sense. I have an RT and is not heavy at all, it is great for cornering, wind protection can be adjusted. Maybe you are looking for something completely different, like a Vespa maybe.

Anyone shopping for an RT should not watch this video, it’s full full of fiction and poor riding.
None of that is fiction...just subjective thoughts....that is a big difference....not everything suits to everyone
For me, 1. The appearance is ugly, all the lines and surfaces are twisted and broken. 2. There are too many functions that exceed the needs of use, so that you have to think about its functions all the time and reduce the pleasure of riding. 3·Quality, unclear.
Or get the smaller screen.
Ive found it to be heavy at the start. Then you learn how to dance. 😊

What height are you? Perhaps you’re not tall enough for this bike. I have a current model RT, and I can only think that it’s to do with your physiology. I’m 6ft (1.83m) and I have bad arthritis in both hands. I have no problem operating any hand controls, let alone the indicators. When I had extended test rides and in the early months of my ownership, I did find some of the controls difficult to get to. However, as I’m used to the bike and more so my fingers and hands are, there’s no problem.
I had a 2007 model year K1200S from new at the end of 2006. It, like all BMWs of that era had separate paddles on each handle bar for left and right indicators. This was a great set up because you were naturally turning your bars in the direction and the paddles were big! Some journalists who were used to riding cheap Japanese machinery couldn’t get their heads around it and BMW saw it as a negative sales feature. So on the K1300S and all later bikes they fitted what I consider, the inferior all in one indicator switch.
As for the weight, if you relax and have good clutch/throttle/rear brake, it’s never an issue. The Police use these bikes all over the World because of their agility and manoeuvrability. The only issue is moving it, when standing beside it. However, for me, I know that’s my poor technique not the weight of the bike because it has a very low centre of gravity and perfect weight distribution. I suggest you need more time on it and to relax. I know when I went for my first test ride on it, it was my first ride of a bike for 9 years. I was very tense, and did find the bike awkward, but after 2 or 3 more test rides and thinking whilst relaxing, it became an easy bike to ride.
As far as wind protection, at 183cm tall, with the standard seat in the high position, I get wind flow in my face with the screen in the lowest position. The RT is not for everyone, that’s why BMW (and all manufacturers) make a plethora of models. I’d not buy a bike without a shaft drive, but that’s because I do loads of all weather miles whilst commuting to London. If you’re only out in good weather (mostly) a chain is more efficient and cheaper to maintain (if it goes wrong….mind if it goes wrong, you probably won’t be buying a new chain, more likely you’re relatives will be scraping you off the road).
BNWs are great bikes whichever you buy. They’re not cheap to service, but the quality is superb. Good luck with the XR.

Did you take an actual test ride before purchase? Did you observe what you liked and what you disliked during that test ride?
Every poster I have observed regarding 1200/1250 RTs has expressed their likes/dislikes during their post.
I'm surprised you didn't know ahead of time it was heavy, etc. You're comparing 482 lb and 615 lb bikes. The latter should feel "heavier" because it is, by about 1/3 more in fact.
The rest of your dislikes sound like you didn't pay attention to what the bike had to offer and what others have said in reviewing it.
Am I defending it? No. Do I own one? No. Would I like to own one? Yes, of course, but I can't afford it.
Another commenter suggested you get a bike better suited to your size. I agree.

Overall a great touring bike, and the power, smoothness and handling for a bike it’s size is intoxicating. It’s heavier than the RT and the CG is probably higher. I hadn’t ridden the RT, so I can offer no direct comparison. Worth a test ride!

NT looks and feels cheaper than RT, but that is OK because there is a big price difference.
NT is lighter and easier to maneuver. Regarding power, no big difference IMHO.
RT has better wind protection for upper body...legs protection feels similar to me.
I liked RTs display more, not saying NT has a bad one...it was OK with me.
Considering my riding style I would choose NT, if I was after image and electronic gadgets I would take RT....of course price difference is quite considerable
You can't reach the indicator switch with that additional non OEM piece (what is it?) mounted to left grip and blame BMW for it. Seriously? The switch is originally exactly as wide from the handle as on the other bike you prefer.

There is something attached on the left handle that moves the left hand about 2 inches further left, away from the turn signal switch. That thing is not supposed to be there and it’s the reason you had such a hard time reaching the turn signal. The left hand is just pushed too far to the left. I don’t know what thing is installed on that left handle. What is it?

My gosh, you have something else on the left grip that spaces your hand further away from the signal lever.... that's on you, not BMW. Such nit picking. It's a fabulous bike that must not fit your riding wants.
