  • Have you ever been in a tattoo shop and noticed one of the artists doing something truly repugnant? Whether it’s “forgetting” to wear gloves, acting like a jerk or doctoring photos to the point where they barely resemble the actual tattoo, there are some sins tattoo artists commit that are not forgivable. We asked our panel about the things they see others do that makes their blood boil.
Welcome to Season 17 of Tattoo Artists React!
We’re baaaaaack! Just like Michael Myers, every time you think Tattoo Artists React is dead, we sit up with a whole new season of fun. We have a brand new cast and a whole new batch of questions for our panel of tattoo artists. This time around we’re going to be tackling all of the tough subjects-what should a tattooer never do, what kind of tattoo is a dealbreaker to spot on a first date and more. We even gave everybody a spelling test. Yeah, you heard me, a spelling test. Strap yourselves in, it’s going to be a wild season!

My tattoo artist wraps EVERYTHING in new wrap every time he tattoos.
His water bottle? wrapped in clean wrap and changes gloves anyways.
Needs to touch his phone? takes his gloves off, does what he needs to do, washes his hands and puts on new gloves.
He goes through 4-8 pairs of gloves depending on how long he is tattooing me.
The dude has a CLEAN set up.

I’ve seen him take off a glove to grab his bottle of ink for a top up, use the other gloved hand to open it, fill his cap, close the bottle with the gloved hand that didn’t touch anything else, take off the second glove and then wash his hands and put new ones on. When I got tattooed, I told my artist "Hey, I have EDS which means my skin is stretchy and my joints dislocate easily, if it happens don't panic I can put them back myself! Are you comfortable with tattoeeing me?" He told me it was fine, and we went on to design an amazing tattoo. A few days later we went on to do the tattooing and I kept noticing he would put lots of pressure on certain places where my joints were, and I warned him like "Hey its fine you are putting pressure, i get it you need to be steady but the way you are putting pressure now it might dislocate, just a warning." He said he would try not to put too much pressure although I told him if he had to it was fine, because he needed to be in that place. A few minutes go by after talking and I noticed he started gradually putting more and more pressure to the point that my hip finallly dislocated like I had warned him. He jumped up and said "holy *** I did not think it would actually happen!" and that was when it hit me that he actually intentionally tried putting lots of pressure on my hip to make it dislocate because he did not believe me. Thank god I could laugh about it but I also felt a bit betrayed by the artist and violated because he intentionally tried to "harm" my body. Fair to say I got quite the discount after haha. Hell of an artist tho!

I’m sure there are terrible artists on that show (I mean we’ve seen their crappy work 🥴) but there are also some great artists. Always remember, controversy sells and there’s no telling what the producers are telling the artists or “canvases” to say or do in order to stir the pot.

I just think a lot about if had it been a woman who was not confident in setting boundaries or standing up for themselves, she would've been totally manipulated and taken advantage of in that situation. But IMO some of the best tattoos are made with tattooer-client collaboration. Big artists definitely can 'tattoo what they want and send the rest away' but it's definitely not the case for smaller artists who are trying to get by, you pretty much have to do (at least almost) everything that gets in the door to eat at the end of the day. I understand that some artists are so busy they don’t have time/patience to show their clients their designs prior to the appointment. I’ve been in situations where I see the appointment day of, and had something very different in my head. I feel pressured into getting the design (not that it’s bad- just not what I was expecting) and wouldn’t feel comfortable asking the artist to redraw and reschedule. unfortunately one reason that tattoo artists don't show the designs is because some scummy people will take the art and give it to a tattooer that will trace it and do it for less money than the actual artist. I have an appointment with an artist who doesn't show the art until the day of, but she made it clear that she's more than happy to work with me to change it if I come in and I don't like it. It could be minor changes, or if I really don't like what she comes up with we could treat that appointment as a second consultation so she can change the design to something I like without having to then rush through the tattoo or something.

That's how my own process is with clients: even with same day tattooing, i still take a pic of the area, and do several sketch concepts for them to choose from before we get started. Most are surprised with my process, which is fun: but I do hope more does so: as I myself would like my future tattoo artists to have variations I can pick from. The more time you sit with a design and the more people you show it to the more small grievances you might develop with it and the more changes you will request. These changes might be things that you wouldn’t even think about if you had just had it tattooed to begin with. This is why it is so important to find an artist whose work you like and who you trust. In my profession as an, Operating Room Nurse, I am constantly scrubbing in and assisting during surgical procedures. I’ve been in this field for around 25 years now and I may be OCD about sterile technique, but for good reason, the obvious one is to prevent infection for your client as well as yourself. We call it universal precautions.
I am both extremely impressed with all of your work ethic as you discuss this truly important information. However, it is so very unacceptable to cross contaminate during an open surgical procedure, especially with tattoo work, as you are already introducing chemicals and metallics into open skin wounds. I have seen incredibly disgusting and hard to heal infections for many other various reasons, but the main concept here is contamination control.
This is a great format to pass along important knowledge, I applaud Inked for taking this issue seriously, as many people would benefit from this information. I understand that tattoo artist have training in blood born pathogens and that you renew that knowledge every so often to continue hold a license to practice, same as nurses. I wonder how well enforced the continuing education is?
Also, do professional tattoo artists have training in basic 1st aid and CPR should a client show signs of an adverse reaction to the ink process.?
I am just curious. I just love your you tube channel and I can see so many similarities between our two professions.
BTW, I was just barley 17 when I received my very first tattoo, a red rose with thorns dripping with blood on my left, upper chest, the perfect place to hide or show off with out revealing too much…. So darn typical for that time, in the very early 90’s. I grew up and went through Catholic school, and was your stereotypical “good girl in a uniform” while having a wild side……lol…
That tattoo was done by a biker gang friend of mine, ( of the former Warlord’s gang of Boston, MA. definitely a Boomer!) in his apartment in South Boston, MA (Southie). Mind you, tattoos were illegal in MA at the time! He had peel packed, sterile needles and a boiling pot of water to cleanse other items, he even wore gloves. It came out great, and to this day stills looks good.❤️😊🌹
As for the faded, (poorly lasered years later with bad results), black panther on my right, upper, lateral hip, he was done at the legal age at 19, in NH, at a legit tattoo studio. I always ponder, and then laugh at the irony of it all….. it seems to me going mainstream was definitely not the best quality. Ahhh, capitalism, love it, hate it, profit from it, be ruined by it, there’s always a catch, but I digress here…..
For anyone who has taken the time to read my long-winded dissertation, I humbly thank you, and hope all lies well in your path. 🤗🌞🙏😉🎉

The comments about arrogant artists was so validating. When I got my first tattoo, the artist finished and said "Remember we do coverups for when you hate this later." 🙁 Just tell a client no if you don't like the design they want. Fortunately I've had great experiences since then.

@Zek Kiel In very rare circumstances this can be the case, but it is sadly *much* more common for people with power to use it to take advantage of others, including to sexually harass them (or worse). Assuming that people who come out with these stories are lying only helps abusers to keep abusing, as we've sen time and time again. So unless you're okay with that, you should always air on the side of believing survivors.

It's crazy to listen to all these horror stories and to read others in the comments. The thing of not seeing the work before it's tattooed is crazy. My artist showed me the work several times before he put the stencil on and checked the placement with me multiple times until we decided on the best place for it. When I asked if I could get color or black and white he told me, "You can get whatever you want." It was very comforting to have that control and understanding that my opinion did matter. It was my first tattoo, in a spot where I couldn't see what he was doing, and it was probably the best possible experience I could have gotten.

I assumed it was just a darker part of the stencil but after a few days I realized it wasn’t washing off, so I assumed he outlined my whole arm with nothing but the needle, with no ink, so that for next time we wouldn’t need to realign the stencil and his lines would be there ready to go to help him get back into it easier. I agree about the tattoo design. I get if it was a walk in and it was being done the same day... that makes sense. But in the time of Covid where a lot of artists open bookings/non-face-to-face consultations and state they will show the design of the tattoo on the day they get it, that is crazy and not fair. I get artists are busy but it would make sense if they built time in their schedule to alot time to at least have a design ready in a reasonable time of advance so tweaks and changes can be made.

This made me even more glad for my first tattoo. Not only was she super professional, but her shop was CLEAN. Like was more sterile than my doctors office.
Also, I’m glad that I changed the piece to where I originally wanted it (on my side). It’d beautiful and I can see it as much as I want, as opposed to the back of my shoulder.

My first tattoo was music notes specifically of my favorite song and the artist changed it, now I've got something that wouldn't even sound right if it was a piece of sheet music

I have an elbow tattoo that turned out like absolute shiiiiiiit because the artist I went to went off and started freehanding and then worked himself into a corner that he clearly couldn't fix. I had no idea that was what he was doing because I was laying on my stomach with my arm propped up and couldn't see it as it was getting done. Now I'm stuck with a shit looking tattoo that messed up my whole sleeve. So yeah, definitely CHECK with your artist.

Back when i got my first tattoo, the tattoo artist was a guy. It was early in the morning around 9 am and i was the first client so there were only both of us in the studio. I asked a small diamond tattoo on the center of my chest, when he's doing it the first 5 minutes, everything was normal, then suddenly i realized his hand placement was making me uncomfortable, because he placed his left hand right on top of my bo**bs. He could've just placed it somewhere else because my tattoo was so small and there were still a lot of space on my chest. I just let him doing his job and slowly... He moved closer and closer to my face that i have to faced right because my position was laying straight and my eyes were looking up. Then suddenly the other tatto artist came and he quickly adjusted his seat. Thank God. I was quite traumatized, ngl

When they were talking about pressuring clients/taking advantage of them, it reminded me of something a guy said on one of these videos. He basically said that his client wanted to change the design, so he purposefully made the new one worse so that they would want to get the old one and then was upset when they still wanted the new design. Like fuck you buddy, at least try and give them something they can be happy with OR explain to them why you think the original design might work better. Don't purposefully give someone shitty work and then be upset that it's shitty.

My tattoo artist is one of the cleanliness I've ever seen he puts a disposable plastic on his computer and on every screen in case he needs to use it. Unwraps everything in front of you so you know it's sterilized. GLOVES AND GLOVE CHANGES. Very professional. When you find a good one you keep them!

Lately I have been finding artists that even though you want a particular tattoo, they decide to do something totally different and a lot bigger than the picture of what you want it and using colors that I did not want.
