  • Singapore, one of the world’s most advanced economy is yet again increasing its presence in the shipping industry. According to the world bank, Singapore is the 2nd busiest port just behind Ningbo-Zhoushan port where China’s leading foreign trade happens.
    Correction(s):
    Tuas mega port will be constructed in four phases, don't three.
    The completion date is in the 2040s not 2040 specifically.

    Summary Script
    With the state of the current global world shifting to a more online presence, the need for shipments has been skyrocketing. This opportunity presents a better economic advantage to Singapore, as it holds such an important shipping lane. It is, in fact, that in the past, the wealth accumulated early on within the region was because Singapore hosted one of the world’s most important seaport hubs.
    Today, however, the maritime industry presents several challenges to the world and Singapore in terms of technological advancement, labor shortages, and more. It is such a necessity to find innovative ways to navigate in the world we live in today, and that is why Singapore came out with a $20 billion Singaporean dollar massive plan to create the world’s largest fully automated terminal.
    This is the Tuas Mega-port project, Singapore’s plan to lead the world’s maritime industry. This grand infrastructure plan will be like no other. With automation being the key centerpiece, it is expected to be powered with 1,000 automated cranes and 1,000 driverless vehicles to ensure that it becomes as efficient as it can. There will even be state-of-the-art smart sensors to detect piracy products, and the usage of data analytics to combat traffic congestions. To ensure that Singapore is targeting a green environment, it is incorporating the use of the Internet of things or IoT to help deliver sustainable solutions.
    Singapore’s government has also taken into account the need for better marine tech-focused businesses in its country, enough for it to justify a massive $15 billion dollar framework for funding to start-ups that operates in green, data processing, and cybersecurity companies.
    This investment will help businesses operating in Singapore to help with international transactions, as this is a port there will be a lot of shipments, then the necessity to have good communication, good security, and efficient use of data is such a vital key point for the usage of its port. Cybersecurity is such an essential industry with the years to come, especially knowing that this infrastructure will be operated with the use of technology. It poses a risk for cyber attacks. Hence, Singapore’s investment in better security is an excellent move.
    The size of Tuas mega-port will be twice that of Ang Mo Kio New Town, this means that it will have a total capacity of over 65 million twenty-foot equivalent units, which is, more than the current 50 million capacity of current terminals combined. It will even have 8.6 kilometers of wharves and infrastructure to accommodate the world’s largest container ships in the world. It will also construct 21 deep-water berths that will have the capacity to handle 20 million standard-sized container units a year.
    The estimated fully operational date of Tuas mega port is still quite a far away, which is the year 2040, the construction has started in 2015. However, this will be constructed into 3 phases, the first phase which will have 294 hectares, and the second phase of about 387 hectares, both of which will be reclaimed land.
    The construction of the Tuas mega-port will increase Singapore’s economy to a new level, it is known that over 7 percent of Singapore’s overall GDP was because of the maritime sector, and even more so that it contributes to over 170,000 workers. With the creation of this mega-port, even though it will take away several other jobs because of automation and artificial intelligence, it will still create newer jobs for people who function in the technology world, this is especially important as Singapore is shifting to a more technology stance.
    Once the completion of Tuas mega-port has finished, it will finally end the long-running operations of the current PSA city terminals and Pasir Panjang Terminal, which started way back in 1819. This means that Tuas will be the only port Singapore will have.

    For those who mention the kra canal are missing the point.
    This port is precisely to mitigate the risk of the kra canal.
    Today Singapore port competes by being the most efficient and convenient. But the new port will compete in terms of effectiveness and capacity. The new port will have the technical infrastructure and water level depth to accomodate the supertankers and dutch megaships that only a handful of ports can accomodate today.
    Singapore will go from that convenient stopover by the way to become the high tech place you will go out of your way to visit.
    So the kra canal idea will definately impact Singapore, but it will not be the killer blow.
    In fact the kra canal will have a larger negative impact on other ports in the region first than it will have on the new Tuas port.

      Thanks for your input! You have great insights. I too believe the same as you, Singapore has a upper hand in terms of its efficiencies and it will be a long way til the Kra Canal can keep up with Singapore's technology advancements.

      The Kra Exchange is simply too expensive just for the saving of 2 days of sailing, hence is unlikely to get an investor; though the Arctic Route can lure the mega-industrial might of China, Japan and Korea away from the Malacca Strait - Suez Canal route. This shorter route can save 10 to 12 days of sailing time plus the saving of fuel. Though with the expansion of the the ASEAN's industrial output especially by Indonesia, Tuas may prove to be still attractive. Otherwise, the 3rd or 4th phase may not take place!

    • @lzh4950
      @lzh4950 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pahatpahat9566 On the flip side the Arctic route has fewer ports of call along the way so shipping demand will be lower, & it also raises risks for ships e.g. if they break down (which is probably also why Russia insists on escorting ships along that route with icebreakers). For the Kra canal what might be more realistic would be the "land bridge" that's proposed by Malaysia's ECRL rail project, but it's capacity will be lower than ships, so there'll still be some demand going to SG I guess. Of course we don't want to be complacent still

    As a Thai citizen myself, the Kra Canal project seems illogical. First of all, the project is mostly considered to be cost-ineffective. Next, superpowers would aim to dominate the area (and Thailand's politics and economy), destabilizing the sovereignty of Thailand and ASEAN as a whole. Southern Islamist segregation movements are also a major issue. Therefore, landbridge is preferred by the current government and many economists.

    A breakdown of our neighbor's incompetence: Malaysia
    1. They waste their time building up different Ports.
    Right now for Malaysia they have 3 different ports, Port Klang, Tanjong Pelepas, and Pasir Gudang. Bad enough to spread to so many ports, now they're attempting to build Port of Melaka, a Port in Kelantan, and a Port in Kuantan. Frankly what does that do for your shipping? It just create a dizzying number of ports far away from each other, and difficult to use. How do you expect say a Container to change shipping vessel from Melaka to Kuantan? Tanjong Pelepas is the most dangerous hence, so many container are crossing the Tuas Custom to the Singapore Port, and the agglomeration serves as a benefit to Malaysia and Singapore. Right now you Malaysia have a Port Klang and Tanjong Pelapas both half half, you already so difficult to move goods, and you still want to add more?
    2. That silly ECRL.
    Nothing short of a political tool to woo PAS voters and reward UMNO supporters, the railway being a standard gauge is incompatible with the rest of the KTM network that uses a metre gauge. This simply makes it impossible to join all the ports together such the Port in Melaka, or industries say in Southern Johor like your Segamat Inland Port. With a shipment that takes longer to circumvent Singapore, its simply stupid to have such a botch up bandaged of a plan to try and takeover Singapore's business. Like this, what's the point of investing in your KTM Electrification and Double Tracking for? You invest, and then your network is unnecessarily incompatible. The railway will simply be there to carry Ikan Talang and Keropok to KL.
    3. Building in the Straits of Johor.
    Of all places, they decide to build Pasir Gudang so deep in that Malaysia has and must use Singapore Waters for the Boats to get in sailing between Punggol and Pulau Ubin. You know how stupid that sounds when Malaysia so big must squeeze until like this? And then you think a crooked bridge will solve the problem? This type of solution from people in KL, make all the JB and Singapore people toes laugh.
    And then as if Pasir Gudang was not bad enough, you finally solve it with Tanjong Pelapas. But you mess it up again, don't need Singapore to block you, you reclaim land in the Straits of Johor to sell to china developers. You have a nice Port and you go block it, you go reflect the stupidity.
    Conclusion, Singapore succeeds out of the jaw dropping incompetence of just our neighbor. Even with a SGD1 = RM3, they engage in Mahathir mindgame levels of tactics to the point their economy look like their Parlimen. You give the same location, and in fact better resources and locations in Malaysia, and yet Singapore survives. We build our business, y'all do stupid things and get stupid results.
    On a personal anecdote, I ordered a parcel once from China. The parcel went through from the Kota Bahru Port, down to Melaka, to Segamat, then to me. Took them 40 days. And y'all go think whether people can compete with Singapore.

All we need is to do our due dilligence to make sure we don't create any chokepoint in the logistic chain that we can continue to earn their money. We cannot do shipbuilding so be it lor, anyway it is not jobs for us, its jobs for cheap labour. We handle the expensive higher end logistics.

      Planning & construction actually started more than a decade ago. Tuas mega port wasn't just to boost capacity, but also mainly to free up prime land in city downtown and southern Singapore (slated to be redeveloped for residential and mixed-used developments). The first phase will be operational this year, and subsequently up to 2040s as the other city ports shift to the new mega port in Tuas.

It wasn't underused, they earn from running international events/tournaments not local events (It is definitely more profitable than the old stadium). For Tuas, it is not just about shipping there are plans for other usage including entertainment and mixed-developments. You could read up on urban-planning, that's the interesting thing part of it that land can easily be reconfigure for other usage. By shifting all the ports to Tuas, you free up prime land in downtown area to be developed for housing and etc.
