In this Wonderful Tonight guitar lesson video I am going to show you how to play the complete song by Eric Clapton section by section.
The solo parts to "Wonderful Tonight" were actually the very first solos I ever attempted on the guitar. So I guess I can say this lesson is a bit nostalgic for me.
In any case, I think the solos and arpeggiated chord progressions would be great for virtually every guitarist to learn no matter what their level.
And, besides it being a rather simple song to play, it is also a great tune. Win Win!!
In the video lesson I start out with the opening solo which also serves as the main theme of the song and the other solos as well. Then I will teach all the parts of the song sequentially. You should be playing it in no time.
We basically have three different chord progressions along with the solos which are quite similar containing just a few variations here and there.
Be sure to concentrate on keeping those bends in tune during the solos. Other than that I don't think this song will be overly challenging for just about any guitar player.

This is the first song I tried to learn by ear. So I was basically playing the right chords but in open positions and for the lead line, I played the last line (a b c d/e d) on the high e string instead of sliding on the b string; so even if technically correct, it wasn't quite "it". This is great insight. Thanks man!

@@johnbeal6592 I'm nowhere near good at playing by ear but whatever I learnt it was basically by taking simple melodies and trying to play them through trial and error.

I stumbled upon your channel specifically looking for the Wonderful Tonight song. I've seen it played differently but yours is the best. I was hoping to to find tabs too as you mention elsewhere that most of your song lessons have them. Perhaps they are there I just could not find them. Thanks for the lesson.
Hi fellow learners... That 1st D the wierd 1 is just a D with an F# bass just easier to migrate to than the 1 used in the walk down from G. You can end the picking pattern on the G note in the 1st G major (5th fret/D string) and slide down to the F# (4th fret). Sounds cool and helps if you struggle with chord shapes (I'm less than a year in). You only have to concentrate on switching the index and middle finger. If you really want to cheat you can get away with using a Cadd9, use your ring finger to threat the 3rd fret on the B string and use your index and middle for the rest of the C chord. When you switch to the D keep your ring finger on the B string 3rd fret... It does change the sound of the pick pattern but musically its acceptable. For the G major chord going into the walk down to E minor, the picking pattern only requires the 3rd fret on the B string, use your ring finger, and the 3rd fret on the low E, do this with your thumb reaching around. It'll be easier for the D with the F# bass as you just move your thumb 1 fret down and add the 2nd fret on the G string with your middle finger. These 3 things will make it that little bit easier transitionally.
Watch a lot of videos on this song. this is the most authentic sounding.

11:20 Call me crazy, but to me it sounds like he's sliding to the 12th on the high E rather than the B on this one. And I could be mistaken about which note, but it definitely sounds a lot more higher pitched than the other iterations.
I have watched Clapton play this song, but at the very end, he plays a long riff that ends down on the perhaps the 5th or 6th fret. Can you show this?

how to do clapton's double bend during the lick its so cool
I am having trouble with the picking patterns unfortunately :/
Just do what you find confortable like all down picks then add up picks later when you get use to it. To speed up the up pick process of getting use to doing it try to learn songs that use up picks slowly or add up picks to riffs you already know.

Hey man when you hit those chords are you finishing with the low note from the chord. It sounds different when you play it opposed to how you showed it

This response is probably way too late but I used a clean tone on the neck pickup and it sounded pretty authentic

I have spent over an hour on the verse. I dont understand the picking pattern, I dont understand the chords (my guitar book has the chords written different from yours so I don't know if I am doing it right). Idk i'm just so confused
you should be able to tell the picking pattern by ear. if not then look it up. what part are you talking about specifically?
i have the same problem :/ i just cant find out how he does it .. he says the picking patterns are the same.. im talking about 3:50 when he starts with the g .

Hey mate, could you help me with the picking pattern of the e manor chords, does he keep the exact same pattern and play it on the 5th, 4th, 3rd and second string or does he play it from the 6th string to the 3rd?
