  • Alcamfor
Alkamfor is a couple's dance that originates from the Philippine province of Leyte, which is part of the Visayas group of islands. The girl is dancing while holding a handkerchief that has been laced with camphor, a material that is considered to promote passion in the area. She waves her scented handkerchief in front of the man's face to flirt with him.
Alcanfor, which means camphor in Spanish, is whence the name alkamfor originates. Alcamfor is how the Philippines also spell it. It is a term for mothballs in the Philippines.
Olden times saw the storage of clothing in wooden chests with a few naphtalene balls to stave off moths. It was believed that the camphor had a pleasing aroma that attracted males.
