When Moses Clayton’s body was laid to rest on Saturday, 1st March 1919, it would close the book on one of Rossendale’s most notorious villains. A character that had once terrorised an entire district with his brutality and drunken carefree attitude would no longer pose a threat to the townsfolk of Accrington, Bacup, Haslingden and Rawtenstall, as well as other places such as Whitworth and Todmorden.

Thank you for sharing the true crimes of Moses Clayton . He was brutal character. I'm surprised the authorities of the time allowed him to continue his brutal attacks and crime .

Thanks for watching 😃 It's amazing how, despite the many fines and prison sentences, he was always allowed back out onto the streets to cause more mayhem. The list of incidents is endless, and I'm certain it would be well over 100. And I'm sure there will be more to uncover on his life.

Wow 😮 what an interesting video. Thanks for the story of Moses Clayton. What a character he was. No fear for anyone and definitely didn't learn from his mistakes. Sitting in jail for 5 years didn't change him at all. He must have been very daring as well. Well done Chris and Vicky. 👍

Very interesting and well researched. A couple of thoughts - it is often said that children who like to harm animals grow up to be psychopaths.
The strange word Bolloper. Could it be a corruption of the Scottish word `Ballop`. This is defined as :
Ballop. The old name for the flap in the forepart of the breeches, which is buttoned up.
His father was arrested for indecent exposure which would explain him being known as Balloper. Perhaps Moses inherited the title?

Bolloper is such a strange word isn't it. We struggled with it at the time of researching this story as we hadn't come across it before. We weren't sure if it was just a silly nickname or something more meaningful which people used to often say.

Fascinating story, I found your channel by chance and viewed with interest. I am from that neck of the woods and visit that cemetery often due numerous family interred there. I then found 'Bollopers' grave that you pointed out and told my wife to watch the video. Great content and very interesting.

Many thanks Alan. We try out best 😆 We will get things wrong from time to time, but if the videos are interesting to people and perhaps sparks an interest in them to research stories themselves, that will do for us 🙌

Thanks Roni 😁 This was a different kind of video I think, but we were surprised how many times his name came up in the old newspapers!

He sounds like my horrible older brother. He's long since died, thank god. Drank himself to death when he was 45.
In hospital, they diagnosed him as being schizophrenic but having lived in fear of him my whole life, it was a diagnosis too late. It didn't make me hate him any less.

Well wasn't Moses Clayton a crazy character, a psychopath! Definitely feared at the time, a major reputation. Deserved to be kept in prison as a danger to society. Not sure how he managed to keep being released lol. Cool and interesting video!

I still think there is another, better, video to be made on this character! It's one we are going to research even more in the hope of digging up more articles and stories. I also think perhaps his father may have been a wrong 'un during Moses early upbringing but we haven't really looked that deep into his life just yet.

Brilliant video I was blown away at about 15.00 you can clearly hear a voice say "Bolliper"!! creepy! thank you interesting please check the voice out?

    • @DaysofHorror
      @DaysofHorror  ปีที่แล้ว +1

That was me saying Bolliper if I remember correctly. I think at the time I just said the phrase and added as an overlay. I might have to go back though and rewatch it in case that occurs somewhere in the video to were I'm thinking 🤔

Found two mentions of Moses' father, James Clayton, being charged with drunk and riotous behaviour.
Date: Saturday, Dec. 13, 1862 Publication: Bury Times (Bury, England) Issue: 389
Date: Saturday, Apr. 18, 1863 Publication: Bury Times (Bury, England) Issue: 407
If I find anything in my research travels, I'll post more.

Excellent investigation ! - Theres no evidence to suggest Moses ever being Psychotic (auditory/visual hallucinations) but seems that he was more likely "Psychopathic" (for example lacking in empathy mentioned ++ no fear of consequences of his actions, total selfishness) - is there any evidence of mental health medical records ? he seems to have assaulted men whom have shown pity upon him, whom he may have perceived as being weak, venerable, maybe homosexual (give him money then invite him for a drink, alarm bell's ringing in my ears !!!!! easy pickings for someone with Moses apparent mind set ) from the information presented it seems to me that Moses is more of a Bully /Coward than that of a hard case however, that said it seems that he was a person to be feared, he clearly had a reputation " Don't mess with Moses, he has a scar on his face, he's done hard labour and he's received x strokes of the Cat O Nines....." therefore, he must be a hard case, someone to be afraid of !
I once knew someone whom was arrested, charged and convicted for being drunk and disorderly in the Isle of Man, his punishment was x number of strokes of the Birch - he was feared by all and dined off that for the rest of his life !
It seems that Moses preferred flight rather than fight ( freeze wasn't an option) up until him being cornered and being left with no alternative, but to pull a knife and/or make idle threats post beatings (don't tell or I'll slash your throat ! Now that throws the cat amongst the pigeons regarding a no fear of consequences and a psychopath OR "Borderline Personality Disorder" diagnosis) is there any evidence of him ever having slashed anyone throat or ever operated into Rochdale/Oldham ????? - or having ventured out of his comfort zone to engage toe to toe fisticuffs particularly against adult males of a seemingly similar ilk ( hard men - coal miners, quarry men, navigators and such ) if so, then nailed on diagnosis Psychopath!
I'm having serious second thoughts now!
If not, then our friend Moses was a chancer - praying upon the weak and venerable looking for any easier alternative to wiping his dead horse and humping coal !

Thanks for watching and commenting. There's plenty of thought in what you have said 🤔 and there is definately a sequel to this video once I can get around to doing it. I think he definately played on people's weaknesses though. That's a great point you made.
