I'm just going to add my .02 on this. My 05 just turned 300K mi and this was the first time the trans fluid had been changed. The cover bolts are indeed 12mm, and there are about 10 to take off. They came off easily. You cannot use a wrench to get at the trans pan bolt, it has to be a shallow socket (22mm, I believe). The bolt came off very easily (you may also try channel locks). I removed about 6 qts of fluid, which looked like motor oil and smelled very burnt. I refilled it with 5 qts. In all, this is a job which took about an hour from start to finish including an oil change. The car is shifting a bit more smoothly, but to be honest, it always has been pretty good. Solid car. Going for 1,000,000 miles, though the new Sonata looks good.
I also meant to add in a thank you for the video. It was very helpful and saved me a lot of money over having someone else do it. Yeah 300K, this car is a beast...devoured a large deer and only cracked the bumped and smoked a guard rail, only messed up the inner tie rod. This is my work car only, I don't give it the respect it deserves. I routinely go 20-30K on a oil change and just changed the timing belt at 270K. I feel sorry for cars that are owned by me or my wife.
gwheelock911 Shortly after my last comment, she took out another deer. Smacked it so hard it triggered the fuel cut off, pushed the radiator/condenser all the way into the engine and killed the trans cooler. Even though she was at 315,000 miles, State Farm fixed it. They ended up replacing the trans cooler and condenser a few months later after the replacements failed. Sadly, she died in October when the transmission suddenly broke while driving. 384,000 miles. RIP
Just did my 2005 Santa Fe, you need a 12 mm open end, box wrench or socket to take bottom shield off. A 24mm socket on drain plug; a open end or box end will not work . I drained mine, drove a few miles and drained it again. 5 and 1/2 quarts will drain out each time. Dextron Vl is compatible to Hyundai SP3
dont know if anyone gives a shit but if you are stoned like me atm you can watch pretty much all of the new series on InstaFlixxer. Been binge watching with my brother for the last days =)
2005 with 206K. I had the shop do this three times on mine will do this now I see how easy ready again. cool to see rhe chap below at 300k. it is cheap to do might as well do every 40k.
I'm going to do a transmission drain and refill and perhaps a flush on my 2008 Hyundai Tucson 2.0 FWD. Im surprised no one else asked and I'm just wondering why did you remove or try to remove the bolts from the splash pan before you removed the drain bolt? Is it necessary? Sorry if it seems like a silly question, I've done many other repairs on my car mostly brakes and suspension stuff, so I'm a bit new to liquids :)
Thank you for the informative video. You've given me the confidence to change the trans fluid in my own 2004 Santa Fe. As for the broken bolts, did you consider extracting them with a left-handed drill bit?
I considered it...but they were so welded in with rust it would have taken forever..If it was a newer more expensive vehicle,I would have...It's the GFs and she wouldn't care if if I tied it up with rope :) So I just used a few self tapping bolts beside the snapped ones
have a 2001 v6 AWD, dealer tells me I needed 5 quarts so that's what I got from them, is that correct according to what info you have? Also, is it absolutely necessary to replace the drain bolt and washer or can I just re-use the one that was in there like in a routine oil change? Thanks
Hi, great video! After viewing this I did the ATF change in my 2004 Santa Fe as well. I got the car with 92000 miles on it and I don't think the previous owner has changed the ATF at all. So I did a drain and fill with Valvoline Maxlife ATF. I've replaced 5 quarts. How do you found your car working right now? I noticed that the shifting is much smoother, but I found some posts online stating that there might be a compatibility problem if the original ATF is not completely flushed. Thanks!
I have the same model that I need to change the oil, is the drain plug on the left side underneath? And is the oil filter on the left side right next to the right front wheel? Please let me know.
+John Martinez ...no..just remove and replace the drain bolt and re-fill...no filter and no gasket unless the transmission is being rebuilt, as per Hyundai manual
no, didn't need an impact wrench..the bolts just twisted and snapped with very little torque applied to them..1/2 of them came out, 1/2 snapped..I'm pretty sure they were 12mm
Hi, I just got this hyundai santa fe 2.7L automatic and the transmission oil has never bin changed, the previous and only owner before me had mostly highway driving and the car is now at 196 000km, would a drain and refill cause slipping?
Would this same procedure work on a 2009 Hyundai Tucson with the 2.0 4 cylinder. Just bought one with 67,000, fluid looks clean but don't know if it was ever done.
Hello, Just I want to be sure........ I have a Huyndai Santa fe 2.4 2WD year 2003... the man in the video wrote the HYUNDAI STTOPED USSING A SERVICEABLE TRANSMISSION FILTER AFTER 2001...... is it true....?
I got my 24mm wrench on the drain plug but the wall around the plug made it impossible to turn and there's not enough room for a socket. What am I doing wrong?
Awesome. Thanks for the video. Couple of questions: 1- The transmission fluid is "non-syntetic" right? 2- Where do you put the new fluid? into the same hole that the stick level goes? Thanks again
I'm not sure if it's a good thing to stop using serviceable filter. Like obviously the number of cycles it goes through the thing is bound to fail at some point.
hi fepabox, I live in Chile and not speak inglis very well, so sorry by my error on the expresion, and I ned help with the tipe de oil for my suv, I am see yuor video and cuestion, do not see the especific type of fluid to automatic trasmicion, and another cuestion, by which hole put in the oil on automatic trasmicion? thanks for your video, is very good
pedro pablo your English is better than my Spanish....Valvoline Maxlife Dex/Merc multi vehicle fluid... fill through the dipstick hole that the dipstick goes into
any luck with that i have a slip like a jolt driving 100 on the highway but getting worse idk if filter is dirty hoping it is a spin on filter mine is 2005 2.7 if any viewers have information regarding filter or any help be appreciated
also have misfire codes come up like a vaccuum leak somewhere misses when i reverse as i back up alot i have to shut engine off and start it back up work fine again
My Santa Fe just got back from the transmission shop running worse than I brought it in. I'm gonna try changing the oil this way. I have no idea what they did to it.
yes ..that includes the torque converter and cooling lines running to the radiator ..so the actual amount removed will be less... unless you are doing a full flush
Yeah, I actually realized that AFTER I initially posted. Sorry. Hey, thanks for all your awesome videos, by the way. You've helped me ENORMOUSLY in the past year or so.
hello from monagas state ,maturin city ,venezuela great video , i have a 2006 gls 2.7 santa fe, does anybody know a replacement for the automatic transmission fluid which is sp III not even in the hyundai dealers con you get that oil in venezuela ,MERCON 5 perhaps , sorry for my bad english and thank you
***** Great video. I really appreciate your work. I too have a leaking transmission cooler line. Any chance you could briefly walk me through that process? Thanks again for your vids!

300k miles ..nice.. I guess at 230k km the GFs Santa Fe is just getting broken in

gwheelock911 Holy crap...RIP ineed
Thanks for this. Worked great for a 2005 Tucson. Used the same tranny fluid and everything.

What did you mean so does it hold 11 quarts or 5 1/2? Don’t understand what you mean when you drained it twice
dont know if anyone gives a shit but if you are stoned like me atm you can watch pretty much all of the new series on InstaFlixxer. Been binge watching with my brother for the last days =)
@Lyle Maximiliano Yup, been watching on instaflixxer for years myself :)
Great vid. I have a 2009 santa fe. What are your thoughts on filter change as well?
If it has a changeable filter (the older spin on type was nice and easy ) It's always a good idea to change it .
2005 with 206K. I had the shop do this three times on mine will do this now I see how easy ready again. cool to see rhe chap below at 300k. it is cheap to do might as well do every 40k.
Thank you !
very good explanation .
Hi, i have 2007 santaf 2.7 v6. can i change the trans' fluid my self or do i need to take it to hyundai?
Thank you.
your 2007 should be almost identical to the one in the video..you can do it yourself, just make sure to use the right fluid (Hyundai SPII or SPIII )
+satriani32 On the Santa Fe. the splash pan had to come off to get to the drain bolt.
Thanks for the video was looking for two days now and there it is lol
I have a 2005 Hyundai Tucson, is this similar, meaning same fluid and is the way to drain it similar? Also, do you recommend a flush as well??
I believe the tucson is the same , no filter change . Drain and replace fluid. Flush isnt necessary
have a 2001 v6 AWD, dealer tells me I needed 5 quarts so that's what I got from them, is that correct according to what info you have? Also, is it absolutely necessary to replace the drain bolt and washer or can I just re-use the one that was in there like in a routine oil change? Thanks
the total capacity of the cooling system is around 7 quarts, but you can rarely get it all out.. 5-8 is prob. what will drain out
Hi, great video! After viewing this I did the ATF change in my 2004 Santa Fe as well. I got the car with 92000 miles on it and I don't think the previous owner has changed the ATF at all. Thanks!
I checked with the local Hyundai dealership and they said it didn't need to be flushed..drain and fill is fine. The car is still running fine...
Have 2013 3.3l Santa Fe. What size tool is needed to open the fill/level bolt. 10mm or 3/8 hex . Will appreciate
Hyundai doesn't use SAE fasteners . It would have to be a 10mm
How many liters of that fluid you need?
HarYHel between 4 and 6... you won't be able to get all the fluid out...transmission capacity is 5 if I remember correctly
Good job
ty
I have the same model that I need to change the oil, is the drain plug on the left side underneath? And is the oil filter on the left side right next to the right front wheel? Please let me know.
easier to show you to make sure you can see where they are th-cam.com/video/Fn7qqlMGnVI/w-d-xo.html
was there a gasket you had to replace in the process?
+John Martinez ...no..just remove and replace the drain bolt and re-fill...no filter and no gasket unless the transmission is being rebuilt, as per Hyundai manual
did you use an impact ... what size were the shield bolts ?
no, didn't need an impact wrench..the bolts just twisted and snapped with very little torque applied to them..1/2 of them came out, 1/2 snapped..I'm pretty sure they were 12mm
Hi, I just got this hyundai santa fe 2.7L automatic and the transmission oil has never bin changed, the previous and only owner before me had mostly highway driving and the car is now at 196 000km, would a drain and refill cause slipping?
it shouldnt
Perfect, thank you so much
Would this same procedure work on a 2009 Hyundai Tucson with the 2.0 4 cylinder. Just bought one with 67,000, fluid looks clean but don't know if it was ever done.
essentially the same yes..
Does the 04 Hyundai sonata 2.7 v6 Auto transmission have a filter??
I don't think it does
I saw another video like this one for the Sonata and it stated the transmission filter was unserviceable as well
did you do it on the sonata yet? I'm waiting for my haynes manual to come in. but want to replace atf soon im at 160k
Hello, Just I want to be sure........ I have a Huyndai Santa fe 2.4 2WD year 2003... the man in the video wrote the HYUNDAI STTOPED USSING A SERVICEABLE TRANSMISSION FILTER AFTER 2001...... is it true....?
Hi, I'm on the same question. And also same car and year. Did you find any concrete information? Thanks.
I have a 2004 Hyundai santa fe 2.4 is the same fluid and no filter ?please some info thanks
the 2.4 automatic uses a different transmission.. it has a spin on filter like an oil filter .. the fluid is AISIN ATFSP3 or equivalent
I got my 24mm wrench on the drain plug but the wall around the plug made it impossible to turn and there's not enough room for a socket. What am I doing wrong?
+Chief 1 I used a 24mm box wrench and tapped the end with a hammer to unstick it
I'll try that.
how many litres did you use for the automatic transmission?
You mean quarts?
Hi is this gonna work into 2002 hyundai santa fe?its a v6 model 4wd
yes
Awesome. Thanks for the video. Couple of questions:
1- The transmission fluid is "non-syntetic" right?
2- Where do you put the new fluid? into the same hole that the stick level goes?
Thanks again
yup, new fluid goes into the dipstick tube..the sp3 is a semi synthetic transmission fluid...
where is place filter
???
How do you change the oil on the Hyundai Tucson
transmission for 2005
LAHCEN lo essentially the same...dipstick is at the back left side of engine
How many quarts was that?I'm American.
+Chief 1 1 quart is about an ounce more than a liter.. so start with 4 quarts and then check the level
Thanks!
Chief 1 anytime :)
Is this the same as a xg350 2004?
same engine as far as I know , so likely the same
I'm not sure if it's a good thing to stop using serviceable filter. Like obviously the number of cycles it goes through the thing is bound to fail at some point.
I agree

pedro pablo es el ps3 lll =psll el valvoline max tiene esa especificaciones .
vladimir galeano yes..maxlife is 2 and 3 and 4 specification...
I have a code P0501 and transmission not work correctly .. you can help me with this issue????????

It's a dumping fill and it's 11 quarts on my 07 Santa Fe 2.7 l
My Santa Fe just got back from the transmission shop running worse than I brought it in. I'm gonna try changing the oil this way. I have no idea what they did to it.
the 2002 model has a serviceable trans filter
good info ...thanks
@@fupabox the filter is located under a pan right at the front of the gearbox

Where is the solenoid on the transmission
The 2002 - 2005 santa fe actually takes 9 quarts of trans fluid, according to Mitchell One On Demand 5 and AllData.
yes ..that includes the torque converter and cooling lines running to the radiator ..so the actual amount removed will be less... unless you are doing a full flush
Yeah, I actually realized that AFTER I initially posted. Sorry. Hey, thanks for all your awesome videos, by the way. You've helped me ENORMOUSLY in the past year or so.
Chris & Heidi no problem at all..glad to help :)
how would you do a full flush start it up?

Thanks again for your vids!
Go get recall repairs on your Subframe.
Hope you don't get finger cancer from wiping that metal-laden used oil on you :-)
LOL ,I've been covered in oil for over 30 years ..I'm prob. walking dead already from all the carcinogens :(
