Hage Geingob: Is oil discovery off Namibia a blessing or a curse? | Talk to Al Jazeera

  • Namibia is a nation that rose from the world's oldest desert, where vast red dunes in Southern Africa meet the Atlantic Ocean.
According to the World Bank, progress towards reducing inequality has been slow and the country is considered one of the world's most unequal. Yet that could change, given the recent discovery of an estimated at one billion barrels of oil off its coast.
But could oil prove more of a curse than a blessing? We find out, as Namibia's President Hage Geingob talks to Al Jazeera.

I think we as Namibian must stand up and reform some laws in order to enable job creation among the Nation. Here the president is talking about the graduates without jobs but the real question is "What`s wrong, what`s going on and are the measures in place to mitigate unemployment in Namibia". Pretty simple, our politicians know exactly where the problem is, they are ignorant and selfish yet they make laws of the country, why can't they amend to accommodate employment opportunities.
I personally think that the OLD AGE category are taking up to 70% of the Public Wage Bill, politicians at the age of 70 to 90 years. Why cant we reform this, people must go home and give others chance. We have capable youth and middle age.
I use to think why cant we as a country minimize retirement age from 60 to 55 years of age for public servants, at least 60 years for Politicians and at least 70 years for Presidents?
If 70% of old age could go home, imagine how many percent of youth and middle age with have jobs. Its is about manipulating the formula to solve for X and that X is unemployment rate. Theoretically, this can work but no one is talking about it. They do not want to go home. I think this topic must be discussed, there is a serious problem.

As a namibian listening to the president talk about these topics, its safe to say we will never have a fair distribution of land, jobs, or any of the country's resources. There is no sense of urgency to lead talks into a direction that is favorable to the country as a whole. Job creation is left in the hands of graduates without conducive environments for businesses to grow. Land reforms only benefit the elite. Health and education sectors are failing.
With the recent oil discovery, if there is anything that comes from the talks it will only benefit the elite few, leaving the rest of the contry in poverty. Just like they did with our fishing quotas. Namibia as a whole will not reap anything from this discovery. The resources will be enjoyed buy the oil companies in their countries.

Perhaps one of the biggest challenge is that there is no scrutiny committees to investigate/challenge any decisions made by the Government.
The deals that Namibia make with these prospecting companies must conatin the following
      a) 40/60 majority must go to the tate
b)all companies who prospect must train at high level students in all aspects of the business0 inserted as part of contracts.
      c) Govwernment must invest money into setting up specifice instutions to extract process refine such products inside the State value added.
      d) work with other Afrika producers under the Afrikan treaty of minerals set up storage facilites for such prooducts in Afrika.
      e) The government and in particularly are extremely naive in that they knew the constitution was a noose yet they signbed it and today the people are landless, unable to benefit from the wealth of the State, namibia should be set up like Libya where students are encouraged under the law to create jobs with their degreees or to go elsewhere in Afrika to learn those skills
The leadership thinks they are entitled to profit because they 'fought' for the country, yet fail to acknowledge that the people who are marginalised parents fought and died for the liberation of namibia and too must enjoy the benefits not only the so called 'freedoms; banded about, what freedoms when you live in stinking filthy place in DRC Katatura Luderitz indeed in all the `4 regions of namibia0 is simple a cop out argument used to seek to silence the youths who are unemploed even with their qualifications

The Namibian President, perspective on burning issues that the Namibian people are struggling with day-to-day seems to be a mismatched. It is so unfortunate that the man we untrusted with with our lives in the country doesn't identify with our struggle as citizens. The answers provided by our President are vague and highly calculated with no substance to reveal the realities on the ground. I wonder how missed to talk about the growing unequal distribution of resources which has resulted in the deepening gap between the poor and the rich in a such small population with a high GDP per capital.

Corruption is a mindset! Hearing His Excellency say the oil is not theirs and they have to discuss with the finders how it would benefit the nation is just the saddest thing to hear.
Africans and Africa will always be exploited with this kind of mentality. The reason why the slave trade thrived was that Africans were ready to sell their brothers for profit. This is what we still practice today and is the reason why most (if not all) African countries are underdeveloped.

It is unfortunate that this is the kind of leadership in Namibia and many other African countries that we have from this group of leaders of the national liberation movements. The President of Namibia is saying that the oil belongs not to the Namibian people "yet," but to the people who discovered it. The interviewer is asking good questions, but Geingob is giving irrelevant and hopeless answers to questions. Being born on a white man's farm is not a unique answer to the questions about the land that he is being asked about on this issue. Is Geingob one of the few Namibians born on a farm that was owned by a white man? This is so sad.

Land is not an issue like seriously, what about empowering local people? Here in Zimbabwe we're not facing challenges because we grabbed the land from whites but mainly because of the sanctions imposed after we grabbed our land. The aim of sanctions was to prove to all Africans that grabbing land from white minority is not a good decision by making us suffer. I tell you, if our country mantained the level or the pace at which the economy was growing after sanctions, most of the African leaders would copy the strategy of grabbing land and the whites wouldn't be pleased with that.

Your people are 99 percent of the population but yet you treat your people like the Africans who sold my foreparents into slavery. We are descendants of Africa. For many of us, Africa is our mother country, like Israel is to the Jews. You are preventing your people, by refusing to change your constitution and excuse about learning how to farm to keep yourself wealth as the expense of your people and Africans in the disopera. It was the deepest desire of my forepatents to return home & their greatest heart break, that I still feel, was to be sold by people like you. To whom ?
It's kept my country in chains. We've not benefited. But the country next door has. A quote free woman in Aberdeen Scotland " I look out to sea and all I can see is oil rigs, I look into shore and all I see are foodbanks".

The way the presentor looked at him trying to escape the question about the elephants... He was like he'd say "do you know what you are talking about mr president?"... He smiled a bit And then he just cut it short by moving to the next question..... Totally disappointed.

I hope our leaders copy whatever Saudi Arabia and them have done to significantly improve the lives of ALL OF THEIR CITIZENS instead of a select few. I sincerely hope we don't become the next Guinea

Imagine a country of 2. 5 million people yet we have all these challenges. And there are those having more than 120 millions to themselves😭😭😭😭😭😭. Yet Mr President says espera😠😠. Building a Swapo office and Katutura Hospital is falling apart. We cannot afford houses in Windhoek and the town houses continue to mushroom.
I agree we need young Namibian leaders and re look at our constitution to benefit every Namibian. Dissapointed. Let's wake up and smell the coffee, our children have no future if we let things continue like this.
