I struggled with cheap sketching paper at first and you are right it is so frustrating when you are trying to learn watercolor. Good paper makes the world of difference. #makoficationsquad
Yeah... Time ago when i started with watercolors i give up because of paper, but i dont knew was the paper what make things hard... Years after that i try again with watercolors and other kind of paper... And i notice i make it better at first intention... So i notice was the paper...
Yes, yes, yes!! Girl, I got me some watercolors cause of your review of a few different cheap sets, now I'm trying to find paper that doesn't irritate me. Perfect timing!!!!
Hey guys! Happy Saturday! Since a lot of you guys were struggling with paper when it comes to painting with watercolors, I wanted to make a video that can solve some of the issues! Let me know what other struggles you have and if you want me to go into more details of a specific topic!
Hey Mako! I couldn't find good quality paper and had resorted to using a drawing sketchbook since the paper was quite thick. And like you said, the paper curls easily but I'm not unhappy with how the paints look on paper. So glad you did this video, now I know what to bother my art supplier/stationary shop with. Thanks 😊
I really like your calm personality and the way I don't feel any pressure in learning how to paint when I'm watching your videos. Thank you so much. You are quite an inspiration. Looking forward to all the things I can learn from you.... Keep vlogging. You're a big help to many. God bless!
Heya! I just wanted to say that being an artist is all about looking at the world in a creative and in a beautiful way. It's not easy to create a masterpiece because not everyone will appreciate the work we do. But I am a proud artist lover and thank you for encouraging so many young dreams of being a artist like me. God bless you. ❤️ #Makoficationsquad❤️
Finally a detailed but quick and sweet explanation of watercolor papers. I was always so confused on which to buy depending on my own style of painting but now I know that cold pressed is mainly what I need! Thanks so much for your videos, even a simple video as this is inspiring mako. Waiting eagerly for the next video! 😎 #makoficationsquad❤
You are an angel to me! I hesitated to continue my most favourable and talented hobby since my high school age because my parents thot im too addicted to drawing and painting…And you brought me back all those wonderful enchanting feelings that I had in my art classes and all the solitude time in making art when i was so young. Thank you for bring my lost soul back!!!
Thank you! I didn't know about the sizing and it's probably what is giving me the wrinkles! I will try Arches next time i have some art supplies money :)
This made so much sense, finally a video of the why's, not I like this paper. It is a struggle to work on cheaper paper, I use it for practice only until I get better then moving on the the better more expensive stuff. So helpful, thanks
Used to paint on Arches CP and Saunders Waterford CP, but found out that I like Hahnemuhle Expression paper CP the most, the colors flow really well and pop! I always go for the 50x65 10-packs, more economical than those smaller blocks.
This is so true, and something i only recently figured out. I always just thiught i was a bad painter... turns out i just had crappy supplies. I never knew paper made a difference but when i BOUGHT watercolor paper specifically my paintings suddenly looked amazing and didnt run or streak. Plus having real watercolor paints made a huge difference. All things i probably would have learned had i ever taken artistic classes.
@@Makoccino thank you for putting this videos out and being honest with all of us. I have learned so much watching videos like yours. Information that has proved INVALUABLE. Truely, thank you!
I watched another TH-camr's watercolor tutorial and followed it exactly, for my first attempt. Water on water. It failed so miserably and looked sad, blotchy, and tore easily. Now I know why! Rough cellulose paper with no known size... Like a paper towel! Off to get better paper for business cards. Thank you!
Hey, mako! I'm Indonesian and i really love the way you speak. It's so clear and i can understand almost the whole part of your videos even my english is not so good hahaha. Keep making arts because i really love to learn with you!❤️
Oh my goodness, thank you so much for this video! I thought I already knew a lot about watercolour paper, but now I've learnt so much more!! And also thank you for featuring my painting at the end of your video!! T_T
Most videos I have seen on TH-cam for watercolour paper begin straight from hot pressed cold pressed i.e. just the texture and say that the paper should be 300 gsm or higher. They don't bother with the other aspects which we may not know. You went into so much precise details. I never knew what sizing was or how watercolour paper can be of different GSMs! Thank You Mako. Viewers can see that you know what you're talking about and the prep you do in each one of your videos is amazing. I wish you all the best for the future. Lots of love. #makoficationsquad I really want to win a giveaway though😝

Just wanted to say thank you for all your tutorials! I found you on my recommendations and it was an instant subscribe. Your instructions are easy to follow and the results when following them were stunning. I also like the way you always make a point in telling us, your viewers that it’s just one way of doing it that you personally find easy and you encourage us to try to find our own ways and styles and in the end, just have fun with it. It’s noticeable that you are genuinely passionate about art, I adore your channel! Sorry for the rant! Again thank you ❤️😊
This video was so helpful because I am a beginner and I don’t know much about watercolour paper so thank you so much for this video and not only this but all of your videos are so good and helpful. Love you so much 💖 💖 💖
I am a beginner and now I can understand better where my frustrations were coming from, PAPER! :-) thank you for explaining so clearly the differences between paper qualities and their proper use, depending what I would try to achieve. You mentioned that you would list your favorite papers at the bottom of the video but I can’t see them. Wouldn’t mind telling me again. I so appreciate your videos.
Hello Mako, I'm here to say that I'm new in the channel and I loved it since the first video. I am drawer, i use ink pens and pencils for most of my work, but I felt the need to learn new mídias and how to color and mix the techniques. I have a set of watercolor pencils and soon I will have watercolor. My biggest problem is actually the papers, I use sheets of 200g / m², but they absorb a lot of water. this video came in very timely. Thank you for your attention, continue with this wonderful channel. Art, love and respect. See'ya!
I understood and respected the importance of having the right weight, but I didn't care about whether it was cotton or not. After having to try different types in class, I saw and experienced the importance and differences for myself. Paint on Michael's store brand of watercolor paper was literally half as saturated as it was on proper cotton paper despite using the exact same paint, brushes, techniques, etc. I am normally content with settling, but such a drastic difference shows this is one thing I can't be frugal with.
Thanks for the quick and detailed tips. I'm a beginner and I thought I'd start with cheap materials to save some money. However, it made me really frustrated. I've only used mixed media ones. New year, new beginnings! Thank you.
This is exactly what I needed! I want to add watercolor elements to my drawing. As someone who is beginner when it comes to watercolors I'm really happy to find this video! Thanks! :)
Thank you for making this video. I had a hard time before trying to understand the difference between hot press, cold press and rough. Your video helped me a lot!
Hi makoccino!...thank you sooooooo much for the AWESOME tips you shared!....it's really going to help me in my art work!...Keep up the great work!...Luv ya!💜💜
Thanks for your advice. It gave me the confidence to go ahead and buy a pad of Arches Rough. I have been struggling with paper that deforms when I apply a wash. So now I look forward to a much better experience with Arches. I know it is expensive but I think it will be worth it if I can produce some good artwork as a result.
Thank you so much for making a video about watercolor paper! I really was confused about the weight and difference between textures. This really helped me=)
Very nice explanations! As a beginner, I bought a cheap (1,70€) watercolor pad and I soon regret it. The paper couldn't stand paint for second time (I waited for first paint to dry). Now I'm gonna do a good research man.😎 Thanks for the video! (and sorry for my bad English)
Finally, I know why this paper always stained so much😭 Thank you so much for this video❤️ Fortunately I recently finished my Sketchbook so now I can use the Hahnemühle watercolor sketchbook❤️
I'm glad I could help! I'm not 100% sure what sizing or ingredients the hahnemühle watercolor book has, but I've been using it for ages and I cant complain :)
Probably should have watched this before I bought my first supplies lol I think I got reasonable paper - cold pressed and for watercolour, 140lb/300gsm but I don’t know how it’s weighed. I’ll be looking for cotton paper though. I’m so excited! Glad I found your channel ^_^
This is so helpful! Was getting frustrated with why my flat washes ended up blotchy and streaky, turns out it is made up of cellulose :/ And I didn't know anything about the existence of sizing at all! Looking forward for my next art supplies adventure and look for nice watercolour pad c: #Makofication
So happy another video is here! I'm always up for ways to make my watercolors better... they look a little crazy sometimes haha. Until the next video! #makoficationsquad
Thank you so much for this video! It was quite informative. I really like the tip about buying a sheet instead of a sketchbook as it really is cheaper :)

Yes!!
Phileas where are you?
Sketching paper is too thin you can draw excess water from your brush by touching the base of the bristles with a paper towel or a dry rag
Yeah... Time ago when i started with watercolors i give up because of paper, but i dont knew was the paper what make things hard... Years after that i try again with watercolors and other kind of paper... And i notice i make it better at first intention... So i notice was the paper...
