I want to thank you so much. I had a root canal by my general dentist and it got infected. I went to the first endontist and he insisted on another root canal and apicoectomy and would not budge on his insistence both needed done. After seeing your video I got a second opinion and the new endo had the same philosophy as you did by retreatment no apico needed. Thank you for making this video.
R Day hello do you remember how long took for the second root canal treatment to completely heal, no sensitivity to bite or inflammation? Thank you for your answer
thank you doc! I am so glad that I found your channel. I am always interested in endo and want to do the best to my patients. thank you for sharing and guiding! really helpful videos
I had a root canal 3 years ago, didn't even know it was preformed. It was supposed to just be a filling. I was totally shocked when my dentist told me a root canal had been performed. I went to one endodontist, he wanted to go straight for the apicoectomy. I got a second opinion and he believes retreatment will cause my issues to go away.
I am desperate for some real dental advice!!! :( To anyone that can spare their time and expertise: I had a Root Canal 4 months ago on a “hot tooth” molar #30 that was so sensitive, I couldn’t even be numb the whole way. The procedure itself was traumatic and painful. About 5 weeks ago, the pain came back. I went to my dentist and they suggested it was the crown being too big, they adjusted and the pain came back days later. I went in again, and they adjusted the crown further, insisting it wasn’t an infection. Pain, again, came back days later. Finally they took a CT Scan that showed a canal was missed, so I had a retreatment done later that week. For the first 3 days, I felt absolutely great! Then the pain came back worse than ever in the middle of the night, so bad that I went into the ER for a stronger painkiller. I was desperate for a 2nd opinion, so I went to another dentist that morning and he prescribed me steroids for inflammation, and a narcotic to help me get through the next few nights. The pain significantly subsided over that week, and the “hot tooth” feeling has finally gone away, but my tooth is still sensitive to touch and I definitely can’t chew on it. Today was my 2-week post retreatment check-up, my endodontist at my regular dentist office took another CT Scan and sat with me to show what she looks for. She insists there is zero infection present (she prescribed me antibiotics just in case) and that the root canal looks successful. She said although it may be frustrating to hear, she really wants to save the tooth and to asked me to wait 2-more weeks to see if it “heals”, as retreatment can be more invasive than the initial root canal. At what point do I go for extraction? I’m able to get by the day with regular Advil at this point (before I needed tramadol to get through the night) but shouldn’t I be concerned the tooth is still sensitive to wiggle 2-weeks after treatment? I should add, the man that performed the root canal to begin with did NOT perform the retreatment. I absolutely refused to go to him being he has rough hands and zero sympathy with trying to get me properly numbed. I appreciate anyone that’s taken the time to read this today,
I already had a apico done after retreat on my front tooth. well the apico failed it seems as i can feel pain in the apico treated tooth 2 years later. What are the success rate for a second apico? Or should I have a implant done instead. Asthetics is very important for me and Whatever that is asthetically most pleasing is the the route I want to take. Your input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
I have a bump on my 2nd to last molar on my lower jaw. This is about 1 year after my root canal on it (until i noticed it). It has a total area of about a dime, and is shaped like a triangle relative to the teeth. It is hard to feel it from the inside of my mouth and is best felt from the outide, it is pretty deep. The bump starts broadly at the bottom of the chin bone and narrows to that tooth. I also feel a thickened line, like a nerve or vein, that runs parallel to it. I was hoping to getting any information on what it might be and the procedure that might have to be done. I currently have no pain. I am concerned and pretty scared as a 18 year old on what might happen and the costs as well.
I had front lower tooth rct done 6 months ago but it still hurts when I bite down, there is no puss or visible sign of infection.. any cluewhat ouls be causing this
had rct 10 years ago by a endo on #7. I went to my dentist for a bump on my gum I figured I got from night grinding. the xrays show the abcess came back. I was referred to the endo and at first he said he would retreat rct and this time add medicine (which wasn't done the first time) for multiple visits. then he changed his mind for some reason and said apicoectomy was the option. he said there was a 75% chance it would work lasting 1-5 years. he said the tooth looks fine and no damage is detected and the apicoectomy is to get out the dead tissue. he then said after I might not be a candidate for implant due to the apicoectomy bone loss. this makes no sense to me. aren't they adding freeze dried bone to the hole so the bone grows back? can't they do a normal bone graft while doing the apicoectomy? would I be better off pulling the tooth and letting it heal then get a implant? he made it sound like the abcess looks better than my scan 10 years ago. why not retreat rct with medicine as mentioned?!
I had a root canal and 2 years later it is causing me pain. I returned to the Endodontist that treated it and there was a dark area around the tip of the apex. He said he could retreat the root canal a million times but it would not resolve the issue and Said I need an apico. Do you think I should see a different endo for a 2nd opinion?
Assalamu alaikum mam, in case of anterior teeth with a chronic periapical lesion, I usually go for both retreatment & apicoectomy. Is this the right choice of treatment?
That will be overkill sometimes. Give it time to heal after the pretreatment and see what happens, but you need to wait about 6-12 months to see if there is any change. You won't see any changes before then!!
I had a painful tooth #18 and thought it was TMJ. Turns out it was infected. I got a root canal at 21. I'm 38 now. So I got it retreated. I had to get another canal treated so I'm going in for a part 2 ...my question is when is this pain going to go away? I had pain prior to the surgery but now my pain is worse and they even put me on Tylenol 3 but if I don't take it every day the pain returns. It's been 7 days since the 1st surgery and I'm supposed to get the next surgery next week. The pain is so bad that I can't even go to work. I've been on pain meds and antibiotics and the dentist said my pain should subside but it hasn't. Is this normal? Not all of the infection has been removed but I don't understand why it hurts more now than before. If I don't get pain relief from the 2nd surgery I'm just going to extract the tooth. Has anyone gone through this?

👋 Hi there I’ve had root canal done on a tooth twice now and after revisiting the endo she said it looks fine on the X-ray. I still have some pain and numbness on my top left near the tooth. What do you suggest I do? Should the tooth be taken out?
The infection might still be there, get a second opinion in the meantime keep it as clean as possible. Use diluted %3 hydrogen peroxide every time time you eat and every hour. Crush garlic and let it sit out for 15 mins so it doesn't burn your gums (be careful as you can cause more problems.) that's what happened to me I had the infection at bay and the pain and was finally gone with regular at home treatments. However I over did it with the garlic (allicin is a natural antibiotic) and got a small open sore from that burn which got infected since it was an open wound. Good luck! Remember that teeth health is the most important because it's so close to your brain and there's so many blood vessels. If you can afford it; get it pulled and get an implant (I traveled out of state because our healthcare is shit.)
I am watching this again because I'm facing the same issue. I got a re-root canal done on 11 and 12 and the infection under 12 is not going away. Its been 3 years to this process of removing my front 3 unit bridge and then root canals and now recently did re root canal in 12 as the infection started erupting and i had abcess filled pimple on top its gum. My doctor is saying that the retreatment was fine (with added medication) but the infection is not diminishing still. He is suggesting that i go for apicoectomy now. What do you suggest doctor? please guide me because I'm tired of going through this over the past 4 years almost now.
I feel a lump in my sinus in the same poison of the apical lesion on the x Ray , I had a root canal two months ago, should the apical lesion healed by now ?
