When you sit in the car and close the door it's like a mute button for the outside world. This generation was expensive for engineering reasons rather than the logo.
i had one 300 SE , i was enjoying when i drive it , i still remember first time i drove my 300 SE , i felt myself like first time to drive a real car , safe , smooth , quiet and reliable , german made their best in this car , i wish to have this one in the video , mercedes is my best car forever .
@barry mccaca nowhere near as reliable as this. W140s (especially the one with the M119) don’t suffer engine problems like the E38, such as the plastic timing chain guides breaking and falling into the oil pan, trashing the engine… the M119 will run forever as long as it has oil in it. Can’t be said for BMWs V8
What an amazing automobile for its time and even two decades later... :-0 A car like this made a powerful statement back in the day. At one point my aunt leased a brand new black mid-90's S600 and her previous husband at one time leased a mid-90's SL500.
@ShanesAutos I´m pretty sure a trunk mounted CD changer was optional on the W140 S-Class. This way you can use the Cassette player to connect your iPod via an adaptor with no need to replace the headunit. By the way for those $85,000 bucks they gave you a cassette player but it came with a superb sounding Bose Beta sound system, one of the best at the time this car was released.
W140 great video of a great car, I upgraded to a newer S500, had it for 6 months then sold it and bought another W140, better car built like a Tiger Tank.
Bought one of these last week, 97 in a very dark blue with cream leather, S500 with 120,000 miles, full service history, 3 owners. Very original unmolested car, has the electric rear window blind and heated electrically moveable rear seats. Only thing I can see that needs fixing are the headlamp wipers and 1 front elec window is not going up or down on the 'one touch'. No rust, mint interior, re furbished wheels, good tyres, just needs a good polish. Drives well, brakes good etc, feel very special driving it and cost me just £1600. Not bad for a car that cost around 70,000 quid 18 years. ago!! WHY WOULD'T I????
Aspie Otaku Not really, Mercedes engines are actually quite bulletproof. It's just that when things do go wrong, which they will because every car wares down with age, it will cost a boat load of cash to replace or repair. So when things do go wrong with a older Mercedes people tend to sell it instead of fixing it, which is why you can't find many Mercedes cars in good condition. Because the ones that ARE in good condition, are being enjoyed by the people who are willing to pay the expense to owning such a prestigious car.
***** That is true. Also learning more about your car, and doing as much as you can by yourself is also a way to avoid all the ridiculous repair bills... However, regardless of who repairs the car, a specialist or yourself, the price of the parts will almost always be the same... And parts for these cars aren't cheap.
+Sean Rebelo it's not some sort of myth... Watch his get rich movie, he also posted a picture of him with one of these on Instagram..not hard to search is it...
I owned the 1999 S500 model which was the last year of this body style before Mercedes switched body styles which I gave to my Dad because it was always his dream car and he still owns it to this very day and it's still his pride and joy even through he has new SUVS! I have been in search of a very specific 1999 S420 LWB since giving Dad the S500 years ago and it has been a long process finding what I'm looking for. Great video.
What an incredible vehicle. This car had all those technologies in it and it's from 1997!! Mercedes was way in front of any manufacturer, and still is! Definately the future of the automobile.
hey man i kno this is a old vid but how is your mercedes doing now? do u still have it?? im thinking about getting one....im also not made of money but i just luv the car i saw one on craigslist from a old guy very clean in good shape...should i get it.....? thanks
Its nice to see what kind of standards and options a luxurious car had 16 years ago! You can notice a lot of things that are considered standard now a days, but were state of the art in 1997. One thing I noticed was the auto closing doors, I thought that was a modern option from new Bentleys and Rolls Royces, but apparently, the options has been in existence for quite a while. I would have expected it to come standard on a average C-Class by now!
for 1997 that car was very ahead of its time, its amazing, some features, although most people would never notice, that haven't appeared until just recently.
Still looks good today, as long as it's maintained well and cleaned up. The 1 or 2 W140s we see a month are always in poor condition which dates the car terribly.
+heliotirana Mercedes just lost all the style when developed the 2001 Sclass. That was Hyundai styling. Nobody complained. I just go shocked. They never should have lost the w116, w126 and w201 styling. For me, they never get de 70s and 80s glory years.
+Roberto Demarco I feel like... you should maybe Google a 2001 Hyundai, and compare it to the W220. They look... nothing alike. I do wish Mercedes could go back to the W140 and W126 style. They were the Mercedes that people dreamed about.
Im from syria and we have it alot here . I already have a black one its very cheap in syria 20.000$ . Its very comfortable and cool . Good work guy . Nice video
My mechanic has a 1999 S500 and it is the favourite car in our circle. One interesting note with the button for the air filtration on the climate system: pushing that button activates a second cabin air filter which is several layers deep and has a medical-grade seal. This filter is about $300. The door seals also inflate with this feature, sealing out who-knows-what. If you run it in this mode, the airflow is significantly reduced through the vents. I would buy one of these if I had the money.
He's not a reviewer. He just presents the cars and shows all the details. Did you notice that he almost never say negative things about the cars? It can't be a review without pros and cons and comparisons with other cars!
Shaun Martin You see, the thing about Chrysler, Buick, Ford and all those other cut-down "luxury" brands is that they aren't made to compete with the likes of mastermind companies such as Mercedes, Bentley, Rolls Royce, etc. They are built for the lower class citizen who can't afford a Benz but still wants to ride around in something luxurious. Which is why they make budget cuts and use hard plastics in places where Mercedes would put leather or wood grain, so that way it wouldn't mark up the price. Cadillac, however, has greatly improved upon their quality and craftsmanship. Just releasing a flagship model to compete with the BMW 7 series... Also they've switched from using fake wood-like textures to using real wood grain and 100% real leather. Whereas a few years ago, in the CTS model, every bit and piece was made from hardened plastic. The same goes to say for the Escalade and models alike. So you can go ahead and mark Cadillac off the "poor man's benz" list and place it where it now belongs, in the European luxury car category, even though it's American.
OfficialEpic222 Cadillac has always made nice cars. Starting with the 2000 DeVille, all of their flagships feature real Zebran wood, not the fake stuff
I've owned both Mercedes Benz and Lincoln's from the 80's..and sorry to tell you this..but a Lincoln from the 80's is a much more comfortable car than a Mercedes Benz from the same period. My Lincoln Continental Mark VI was a dream to drive..soft cloud like ride..an AC that could keep an ice cube from melting in 100+ degree weather..luxurious interior..and beautiful looks that got me compliments everywhere. But my MB 500SEL while beautiful looking..had a hard ride over the bumps..a ridiculous AC with only 2 speeds..and leather that was cracking all over the place. All luxury brands have pluses and minuses..there is no one brand that does it all..so you just choose what is best for you.
FAVORITE YEAR S-CLASS! they look like tanks and the wheels are machined alloy. OOF. kyle, you are putting in WORK and really making your viewers happy!
I have same car/color except a 96' model. The side airbags first year was 97', not 95' as stated here. The W140 with a 5-liter V8 is a fabulous car. They reward understanding and knowledge more than $'s. The post face lift versions, 95' & up are generally preferred for various mechanical reasons. Bruno Sacco, I thank you.
Kyle you just read my mind, I was watching the Fleetwood tour you uploaded earlier and thought at one point "I'd really like if Kyle toured that Merc S on the backround" and you did haha! Great, I really love and appreciate your variety on these car reviews.
He isn't really a reviewer. He has more of an informational, salesmen style. The info he provides is almost completely unbiased. As you can see all of his videos say 'tour' at the end of them and not 'review'. He does take some for a spin once in a while, but since most are dealership cars and not his, I imagine he's grateful they let him inside them. I understand why you would be interested in seeing more test drives of the cars he displays though. He brings a lot of rare treats to the table.
I'm personally not a fan of modern Mercedes-Benz but their cars made before 1997 are rock solid. I've always loved the early 80s ones with the real German leather and real wood interior 😍
This particular year model and the Ls400 by Lexus are the 2 cars from the 90s I would still drive and be satisfied in every aspect. I’m 35 years old, that says a lot.

20 years passed and many of the features this car has are still "new" in most of the cars today.. :)
So very true...
yup. the best or nothing. Mercedes always sets the standard
:,-)
Rohan Barbade i heard dat
and my 2017 sunny is still using handle windows
Waaaaaaaay ahead of its time.
Everything except for the exterior design :) It was a bit conservative
Shaun Martin well it very much got the looks of a w124 but the sheer size speaks for itself.
i agree.
'90s Mercedes-Benz are just the best cars ever.
When you sit in the car and close the door it's like a mute button for the outside world. This generation was expensive for engineering reasons rather than the logo.
George Armerding youre so right
With the available by xenon headlamps
My aunt had one of these when it first came out. Very beautiful car. It was way ahead of its time.
Am i the only one who think this is much better than the newer models?
naw this car may be just as old as i am but, i can tell u tehe newer benzos look too "lazily designed" imo
none of your business Douchebag.
I totally agree, I’m driving my dad’s car, same year model, very well maintained, feels like a dream. These cars are built to last.
I totally agree
Well I think newer is always better
Xenon, self close, automatic windows, sun blinds, 5.0L V8!
Gosh this car is amazing, and made I the mid to late 90's
And heated and cooled seats, headlight cleaners, rain sensing windshield wipers, 315 horsepower
@@kanebowser-wieser3667 no cooled seats on the W140. Even the W220 had ventilated seats but not cooled
It actually started in the early 90s. I believe 92 was the first year of the w140?
Wonderful car. Old luxury tank. Looks so solid and perfect, nowadays swagmobiles are nothing comparing to this
It's a pity that they don't make such gorgeous cars anymore
This beauty was way ahead of its time, I would rather have a 80s-90s Benz rather than a modern one.
i had one 300 SE , i was enjoying when i drive it , i still remember first time i drove my 300 SE , i felt myself like first time to drive a real car , safe , smooth , quiet and reliable , german made their best in this car , i wish to have this one in the video , mercedes is my best car forever .
I love this old school merc. Legendary reliable machine.

God, I love this car. I'm definitely going to buy one when I'm older. Mercedes cars from 80s and 90s are the best ones
This Merc is mint considering it's age. I'd buy this in a minute if I could. It still looks like new. Wonderful condition.
This will be my second car to buy in 2023.
Love these Old Benz's! This one is in great condition, and that engine sounds GREAT!

Looove this generation of the S-Class. To me, it's still the epitome of Mercedes.

hey dude, im about to get one s500 96 with less than 100k miles.. how do you like it and what's your overall perspective of the car? thanks
this car never gets old
This model of cars are really made in heaven.
This is my favorite generation of the S Class. I just love the way it looks
There are plenty of channels who do that. However, I´m quite sure he is the only one who gives a good detailed look at the interior of a car.
One of my favorites cars, powerful, comfort and stylish : )
Thanks Kyle again
Random fact: 50 cent had one of these at the age of 19
Proof?

why dont you do a video on the W140 then?
i will never fall out of love . W140
🤝 Me too bro and I’ll add my 2006 Lexus LS430 to that list a pure gem 💎 of a car never getting rid of mines 😎
Clean interior for a car from the 90s. WOW and that horn tho
style, quality, wtf happened to mecedes today???

+heliotirana Well, after Daimler made the mistake of buying Chrysler, Mercedes-Benz would never be the same again...
***** Yes. I love the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s Mercedes designs. From the 2000 to now, NO, it seems that the Hyundai designers took control.

these cars are a classic
I would love to get my hands on one of these now!!!
This car looks and feels so well made. So much better than modern Mercedes.
This car is the shit why cars now don't have this
This is what i call FULLY LOADED!!!
It doesn't have many options at all. Google W140 dash switches to see what a fully loaded one looks like
I dont care how olds thoes cars are, they still look good and brand new.
Well done on the tour of the S500,i could not have done it any better even that i own one ,perfect writte up of this W140 Model ,congrats .
love these older s series
US carmakers should should buy one of these and learn how to build quality, rattle free interiors!
ValeaBarcaului I believe the vanity mirror at 11:14 rattled quite a bit, and US cars are very good these days.

When Mercedes still made quality automobiles that could actually rival a Japanese automobile.

I just loved those cars, they were nice looking and were such nice rides.

What a beauty! Great video as always Kyle!
i had the honor to drive S 600 with V12, on board navigation(!), and all extras--> it is an amazing car like every S-Class.
Wow this car was ahead of its time!
all electronics seem to work...which is a blessing ;)
Couple of months ago, i was in frankfurt, in a S-class xab of this generation and it had 385,000 miles on it. German quality, man!
I'll take this and that 500SL, oh and that Fleetwood. Cadillac and Mercedes have always been some of my favorite brands in the world.
I'm personally not a fan of modern Mercedes-Benz but their cars made before 1997 are rock solid. I've always loved the early 80s ones with the real German leather and real wood interior 😍
"beautifully crafted automobile" That is a complete understatement.
Love the Mercedes, keep them coming.
This particular year model and the Ls400 by Lexus are the 2 cars from the 90s I would still drive and be satisfied in every aspect. I’m 35 years old, that says a lot.
Loved this video. So many features!
if i could make my own car company , i want to revive this design. it looks very modern despite it's age. and it's so sexy af
Man...this is amazing....Full full full full optinal..
Old is GOLD baby !!!
another great review, keep them coming thanks man
I been looking for this mercedes-benz thanks Kyle
dude do more tours on old cars!!! this is osem
This is by far one of my favorite cars. I WILL own one some day lol
This is the mother of all modern cars
Beautiful car, great review!

Sweet Jesus.., that thing is in amazing shape! Doesn't show its age at all.
Loving all these 90s cars... I think I'm going to put a cap on backwards and go watch friends.
I've got one.The hydraulics make for an unparalleled ride. The W140 will never be duplicated.
Just awesome tour ,thanks
I love the rear fog light on Mercedez. So bright !
Those seats look freaking comfortable, you could sleep on those
did I see an OPTIONAL all-wheel-drive setting in this car from 1997? awesome
Man, it's a mansion on wheels. Great example!
That looks like gold to you.....man.
Hving one of these nowadays is still a nice car, imagine when i came out in 1997???
U had to be the coolest guy driving around in one of these... hehe
Great videos as always kyle! Also read your article on Caranddriver... by the way your picture makes you look like the guy from MAD magazine....
