    Not just MBA, most course have become more of less irrelevant today. There is hardly anything that cannot be learnt from internet these days. People go for such cool courses just bcoz there is certain brand value attached to it.
    It's a filter for employers. When you say you've done MBA from a top college, employer assumes that you have a certain amount of talent within you that he need not spend time on checking while interviewing you. That's how it benefits.

      You will earn more with an MBA even if it's not from a top college. A specialization helps more, e.g. IT, Finance, Strategy, Healthcare
      Median MBA at a b-school is going to be six figures with a few years experience.

    I love the honesty in this video, brand is everything! I've found that if you don't have the network to help you get into a "branded company" then you'll definitely need to have a strategy for branding yourself, through the school/company of your choosing. Deniz, I wish you were able to teach this to High School Seniors/Junior...

    The 2 views expressed in this video highlight the whole crux of MBAism. (1) MBA is not really needed for getting know-how: books and evening courses can do this. (2) MBA from 'top' institution puts a premium on the salaries of those having it. This hypocrisy is not unique to management jobs. Self-taught software engineers also feel the need to have some formal academic qualification to get senior positions in major companies like Microsoft, Google, Amazon, etc.
    I'd really like if you elaborated more on your first 4 months at PWC Consulting where you found out how little you really knew about real teamwork consulting - and especially how you coped and eventually thrived in this real intense working environment.

    Very brave video. Thanks a lot. Whenever I see boys/ girls feel superior because of the degree they hold, I feel funny. Most of them do higher studies just to make more money. If they will know how much a small business owner makes, there mind will blow off. I strongly believe, being a businessman is an attitude one posses. He just get sharper with an MBA. At the same time, many new people get exposure to a new way of thinking and realize they are good in it, and they really become successful.

    My MBA was very easy (It took five months) and cheap (It cost $4,000). It's also an MBA in IT management, so I got one in a useful field. My only problem is getting started. With an MBA in IT I need to have some level of technical knowledge to find employment, so now I'm filling in knowledge gaps to get one of those six figure positions. Very happy I got it though, it's an immediate boost to my resume and I'm getting job offers for $70k starting out.

    I am wondering If I can get your thoughts on this:
    - I have been working for over 10 years and have been feeling stuck in my career.
    - During coffee chats, I was suggested to consider MBA or MS Computer Science (I don't have an undergrad in CS but saw there are some bridging programs out there for those who don't).
    Wondering what do you think about MBA vs MS Computer Science?
    - I think MS if usually for those who usually have around 2 years of work experience but may not be appropriate for those with more work experience.
    - I think with MS CS one tends to become a software developer writing code. Pays well but just writing code.
    - With MBA people usually tend to go into 3 buckets (consulting, IB/financial services & tech). My perception is that the work life balance of consulting/financial services isn't great and also getting there in mid 30s is tough but tech (product management seems to be the most popular role in tech post MBA, though the current tech economy isn't great with layoffs) seems more open with better work life balance.
    Would love to get your thoughts.

      Hi Jaime, I think the wave MBA was riding on the past 20 years is almost over. It'll very unlikely provide the benefits once it did years ago (comparing the benefits to the time and money investments required). There were many contributors to its sudden downfall including the rise of online MBA programs from top-tier business schools. I have a feeling that the next "thing" is the Executive Education programs from these top-tier business schools. For example, my wife is getting a 3 month program from Oxford. Not only she's learning serious skills but also putting a brand name like Oxford in her CV for a relatively affordable cost (time and money). It really is a perfect solution for many professionals in their mid 30s or older. Plus, you can actually choose the subject that interests you for your own career development as opposed to an MBA where everything you learn is highly shallow and generic topics. Cheers.

    Hey Deniz, what would be the reaction of an interviewer when you are applying for joining MBA program and he asks you why MBA? I love each of your answers for clear, practical and honest thoughts. I also want to do an MBA majorly for Brand name and amazing networking opportunity. But I am always advised by others to provide suger-coated answers like how I got attracted towards MBA from some event at college or in previous jobs and how I want to learn the MBA subjects to know more. I personally feel that if any MBA college professors want such answer then he is stupid because all subject knowledge is available in online courses. But still in reality many interviewers expect answers just like this and mentors tell me to give them what they want to hear. So what do you think is real thinking of these interviewers? Your personal experience may help.

    Also to those who think a b-school MBA is not worth it- the accreditation matters. First off, the school is accredited by the regional accrediting body, making it valid in that regard. But then there are additional business school accreditation that colleges get to show to employers that the content is going to meet the strict standards. ACBSP and AACSB accrediting bodies review the curriculum to ensure it fits in with the standard of the other schools, so it really makes no difference. For example, both Harvard Business School and an instant access business school like WGU (Where I graduated) have AACSB accreditation. This means that the content is essentially identical, so that firewall is what ensures whatever school you go to will contain the general content needed to make a Harvard degree the same as a less reputable school. Not that those with high tier schools won't earn more, but that's often at the expense of moving away and going hundreds of thousands into debt, and at that point- does that income boost from a tier 1 school really matter?

    Reality is, you can learn everything yourself by reading books, online articles etc. However, most top jobs require you to have an MBA, because an MBA serves as a filter for employers (MBA signals talent, discipline and so forth). I still dont understand why no body teach us those things since a young age?!?! I mean if the ultimate goal was to increase profit and productivity isn't it better prepare every kid in middle and high school or even undergraduate school to be a strong professional worker?! Why does governments not invest on such valuable assets? This must be intentional. You can say it is a conspiracy but am really freaking pissed! Millions of people dream into getting to the best universities and the only thing they can get is a brand name? Why even judge a person based on the university he graduated from? Wouldnt be more fair to prepare every single kid from any school better than lying to them about getting to university then finding a stable job so easily??

      you are right brother, it is an intentional thing.

    I completely agree. Twenty four years ago, I had completed my first MBA from a C grade B School and l know how much to suffer. Big organisations hire from every possible background. Than the politics stars. Graduates with the matching background with immediate manager will alway be “The Star”. It is hard to breakthrough this cycle. It is not alway the knowledge that will give you a chance to stand. It is always the confirmation of what you know with your immediate manager. In a dirty word, it is your background what is the majority of your corporate performance. I can confirm this statement as I did my second MBA from a A grade B school last year. Now I can compare from both side of the river.

    If I wanted to specialize in HR though I have a Bachelor's pharmacy degree & will take HR diploma too, so is it worth it to take MBA to specialize in HR and have better job opportunities in HR??

    Hi Deniz, Many thanks for your great videos. I am definitely a big fan of yours. I am 40 years old and I have 14 years of experience in oil and gas industry. I am planning to do a weekend MBA in Imperial College London. My ultimate goal is to work as a consultant in a consulting management firm in energy filed. Do you think I am too old for that?

    • @DenizSasal

      I think you'll have significantly higher chances to join a management consulting firm as a Subject Matter Expert than say as a Director or a Partner.

    Hi Deniz, thanks for your video. Very insightful when considering pursuing an MBA. What’s your opinion about Online/Part-online MBA’s (Top schools only)? Thanks, Jordi

    • @DenizSasal
      @DenizSasal  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not a fan of online schools. There'll be a time in the future when their brand name will be stronger and that brand name will mean something to employers but today is not that day.

    What if I already have a masters degree in Information Studies and I want to go into MBA with the mindset to focus on for example the commercial side of information (bookstores, publishing, or knowledge management). Would that be stupid?

    • @DenizSasal
      @DenizSasal  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think you need an MBA for that.

    • @DettolObsessed
      @DettolObsessed 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Even if I work in family business with absolutely no business background and I also have a side hobby that I want to startup -- therefore an MBA could target all of these needs in one go. And I also won't be paying that much for college?

    • @DenizSasal
      @DenizSasal  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      What you learn at MBA is very high level. Branding, segmentation, basic corporate strategy etc won't help you much. You need on-the-ground skills, ie; ppc, cpm, ppe, funnels, conversions, etc. MBA can't teach you that.

      It's business management, how will it not add to getting to know how to run a side business or give growth to my existing managerial position.

      Of course, it will. But it's a matter of getting the best return for the time (or money invested). Best of luck.

    I need a help that currently I live in India and born and brought up here, recently I graduated from a college with B. TECH degree in Computer science and due to recent job cuts and other issues, for a long time ago during my college I decided to go in finance industry (Investment industry). I am preparing for CFA level 1.I want to join investment banking industry and want to work abroad. Currently I am an intern as junior research analyst in a portfolio management company. What do you suggest me to go for finance MBA or CFA? As I want to work abroad and in investment industry

    • @DenizSasal
      @DenizSasal  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If I were you, I'd reach CFA level 3 first and gauge the interest from the investment banks. If it doesn't trigger their interest then only consider an MBA.

    Hi Deniz ! would like to know how much distance MBA would help professionals. Will you recommend distance learning with any top 5 universities being a professional & running short of time to spend on regular course ?

    • @DenizSasal
      @DenizSasal  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kaushik, I don't think they are very attractive from an employer's perspective. I can be wrong though. Try to find some survey results where Hiring Managers rank their opinions on distance learning.
