The DCT on the AT is a revelation if you are aware of all of its functions. For example, press and hold D momentarily to find you can choose from Sport Mode 1, 2, or 3. You may find Sport Mode 2 the optimum (Goldilocks) setting. The gearbox will adapt to your riding style. The purpose of D mode is ideal for long journeys to save fuel, operating in the most economical way. In addition to having paddle shifters, there is a gear lever available that works the gearbox like a quickshifter. The traction/torque control (T) has three levels of intensity, or you can turn it off. There are three levels of wheelie control.... (W), and four engine power levels (P), and three levels of engine braking (EB). Hope this helps. An interesting and enjoyable review, and lovely roads, but many people who review this bike just don't do their homework especially on the DCT!

Whoever walked you around this bike prior to giving it you to test has really let you down by not properly explaining the DCT gearbox. In my experience, with proper explanation, DCT is at least 60% of the AT/ATAS and NT sales at the dealership I work for. We often have people come in to test ride one of these models and the demonstrator is DCT. They say they wouldn't go for the DCT and then come back and buy the DCT as it is just far better for road touring, especially 2 up. I cannot stress how important a thorough explanation is to truly feel what the DCT box offers.
Great video! Cannot wait to have one at the showroom to test myself and see the differences from the outgoing model.

You can change to a lower/higher gear while in auto mode. You dont need to toggle manual mode!
As a AT user, one thing that we dont do is use Standard drive mode. Its just too conservative. Use S1, S2 or S3

As a DCT owner you'll prob have the answer to this: What happens when you hold the rear brake and apply the throttle from a standstill? Are you able to control pulling off any better via clutch-slip & brake or do the clutches just disengage altogether?

    • @Phalgun27
      @Phalgun27 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@starfox_wr-45e93 you can control the throttle by holding down the rear brakes. Clutch does not disengage

Good review Greg, one thing it does show is how important a really good long ride on a DCT is.
I can say that as an owner of 2 Crosstourer. I test riode a DCT before I bought my first one. 1/2 hour ride, hated it and ordered a manual. 3 years down the line and after a lot of conversations with owners and a 3 hr ride I bought the DCT, for me the better bike. It is definitely a system that takes time to dial into. I believe the AT had 3 sport modes and you can use the manual change while in a DCT mode.

    • @LambChopRides
      @LambChopRides  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Yes I can confirm it's brilliant on a long day's ride out. I found S1 to be almost perfect

I almost never used Drive Mode on my AT DCT. The toggles are available in any mode...no need to go to manual. For that reason, I seldomly went to manual mode. Quick down shifts are are a thumb press away. That's why the Drive Mode short shifting never bothered me...just toggle up or down. I really feel that reviewers should spend more time than usual on this type of bike just to get familiar with it...intuitive for motorcycles is all centered around riders being accustomed to a clutch and shifter, so a paradigm shift is necessary for this bike to be intuitive to anyone. I had the earliest DCT model of AT. If it had CC, like they added a year later, I might still own it. I also like the electronic preload the put on the the Adventure Sports, though the options are a bit much. One really big forte of the DCT is stop and go traffic. Sooooo much more comfortable and easy to stay focused and alert.

Great video well done Greg! I’ve recently ridden DCT and manual versions of the 2024. Manual version wins every time for me. DCT sucks the fun out of riding but I know many love it. I love clutches, rev matching and feeling the connection with the engine. Great bikes though in both guises and the manual version will be my next bike.

Lovely to see a quality presenter on the channel for once, nice work Greg - and I'm 100% with you on the AT DCT, I got to ride one of these bikes for a short while a couple of weeks ago alongside a fella who worked for Honda and we both commented on the same thing, felt like a scooter with the clutch slipping when you pull away.....really odd because the DCT on my GoldWing doesn't feel like that at all and always selects the right gear for the job - wonder what they've done to muck it up?? Other than that, I really liked the new bike, especially the lower seat height....I suspect will sell well now the GS is such a minger.

I have dct on my africa twin. You can hit the up and down button at any time even in D or Sport. So, in D if I'm wanting more RPM's I just use my thumb to drop a gear. then again when in sport I will use my index finger to up a gear or two. It will fairly quickly try to get to its gear but on the instant it will go up or down with just a button.

I drove a rental 2024 model (manual shift) in Spain the first week of march. The engine, gearbox and handling are good, no complaints. You mentioned the overload of information on the dash. I totally agree. The electronics are are overly complicated and the Android auto/Apple car play has to many connection issues. Aside from that it takes ages to connect. The whole startup procedure looks like a pre flight procedure on an aircraft. In that sense Honda has some homework to do. As for the seat/saddle : to hard an to narrow.

I do like a DCT in a car, I’m on my second in a Polo GTi and it’s brilliant. Flappy paddles for when you want to play on the lanes and full auto for round town and motorways. I’m just not sure about it on a bike, like Greg said I think I’d prefer the control of a clutch. Riding a bike is more engaging than driving a car and the gears are part of that engagement.
That said, I’d love to try a bike with DCT, but I suspect you’d need more time than the usual half hour test ride to get used to it enough to form a proper opinion.
Great review though Greg, nice to see Chops let you out on your own! 👍

If you down shift and let off the throttle you will not feel it engage because the clutch is engaged. Keep the throttle open when down shifting otherwise it will feel like it’s in neutral.

Great for bikers without a left foot and on a cruiser/tourer like the Goldwing but give me a manual box every time. The big change is that 19" front wheel for those that won't be going off-road on their adventure bike.

  • @CPUspeed

Wow Greg great vid! I don’t think people understand the difficulty in getting cameras and mics to work. I don’t think the comments mentioned that gravel mode allows you to fine tune the throttle response. YES display complicated but you can set things individually like engine braking more than a gold wing because the Africa twin goes off-road. YES people knock the DCT but it is an “option” albeit a cool one to have. If you bought a Porsche would you get a manual or PDK? My father would roll over in his grave if I chose a PDK but if he was alive he would appreciate how good a dual clutch transmission has become.

Well done Video Gregorio. As an atas owner I wanted to share with you, there are modes in sport that are more useable on the road like s2 or s1.. as other viewers have said in the comments when you are in drive mode you just have to push the minus button when going through a corner so that you don’t have to experience the false neutral experience around the corner. It will drop the gears even when you are in automatic mode. Lastly you should watch some videos by Brett Tkacs, where he teaches that you use the break when pulling away from a stop. You use the rear brake like a clutch to hold the bike and release the bike like you would with a clutch on a manual version. Doing so brings back all confidence of driving a bike with a clutch, while you actually have a Dct. I practice this now 90% of the time, and it has given me complete control over the DCT order, especially under slow speed riding. Try it out you will like it. Great video and thanks for the review, from a 2021 ATAS owner.

To me DCT on a bike is the answer to a question no one asked. I don’t like adventure bikes in general but have to admit the African Twin is pretty good looking. The problem is if you put a 19” wheel on it then you are saying you want a road bike so you may as well just buy a proper road and lose all the off road adventure trimming compromises

I’ve owned both a DCT and a manual AT and I agree the manual is by far a more enjoyable bike to ride especially with a quick-shifter on the manual. Slow manoeuvres are a lot harder on the DCT having to use the back brake. And off road is so much easier as you have the control on the manual.
But for road riding and long touring the DCT comes into its own. Just depends what you want both are great bikes

There's three modes for the DCT in Sport, D is for max fuel economy I never used D Sii is the best all round for the DCT. I think the AT is the best looking and all round adventure bike on the market. There also seperate to the DCT gearbox modes rider modes and off road modes.

Agree completely, there is one good thing that D mode is for. It is a great safety mode at the end of the day when you’re getting to your destination, and you are tired, it relaxes the bike in the country when you’re at the end of your 500 km day. The engine stays really relaxed and Lopes along, protecting you and making sure you get your destinations safely while you’re tired.

Good vid Greg, I'll be staying subscribed, regarding the DCT, there are 3 settings for the sport mode, it looked like you had it set on S2, S1 would have put it in the gear you said you wanted it to be in, and it would also have changed down for the "corner" ..

Yes it took me ages to find this out when I rode it. And like you say S1 I found allmost perfect 👌

Placing the engine braking on a higher mode in one of the two driver modes that can be controlled by the driver will also cause the bike to Engine break earlier in corners in all modes

Nice Episode Greg & a pleasant change to Lamb Chops dulcet tones! Only Joking LCR. DCT Gearbox seems a little floored off-road, Mr Vida struggled in Morocco when he got stuck in the middle of nowhere.

Gregorio, great review. The keyboard warriors below have the benefit of having experience with this bike. You offer a nice review of a first experience with the bike which is useful, certainly for me. Keep up the excellent work.

If you're an experienced m'cyclist, do you REALLY need a £1.4k autobox? Isn't playing with the clutch part of the essence of riding?

Well done Greg , great to hear your opinion on the DCT box . Sounds like it still needs some tweaking. On cars the number of gears as standard seems to be 8 , I wonder if that would work better on a bike too ?. As you and com mentioned to long or to high. The bike looks good and comfortable. Look forward to the next video on this bike. Thanks

First class review Sir, I do not see any advantage in having a DCT gearbox, what with the extra weight and cost. Would far rather put the £1200 in the petrol tank.

I owned one of the earlier "new" Africa Twins with DCT. In the test rides I quite liked the DCT but in subsequent ownership I found it really wasn't for me. It's very clever, works well most of the time and it certainly makes longer journeys a bit more relaxing but for me and my requirements of a recreational machine I think if you have a decent quick-shifter/auto-blipper then I have the optimum solution. All IMHO of course before the DCT mafia descends on me. The bike itself was OK but I never quite trusted the front for some reason being a relatively top heavy bike with a 21" front wheel - so I switched to a smaller wheeled "manual". I suspect the 19" front might help these Adventure Sport versions but for me there are other bikes I want to try.
