Hi spencer, back in the UK I have a fire transit custom SWB. When I purchased it, I was excited to pack it out, but I haven’t done it yet. I keep thinking about how I would want it but it always leaves me thinking that anything I do will make the van less versatile. It’s a hard one. On a another note, your home is magnificent, and looking at your van and truck, business has been very good to you!! Well done buddy!
I do flooring and have to haul away quite a bit of material and dont want a box truck, been looking at one of these as an upgrade from my normal sized chevy van I have now, someone at my work had one and i was blown away by how nice and big it is.
I bought the same model for my company. The only issue we have faced so far is the height of the high roof sticks out over the sidewalk on a road with a serious crown. This just means you need to be careful around telephone poles when parking. Otherwise it is 1000x better than our old E350 van. Even my 6’8” partner can stand up comfortably inside.
The Ford Transit is great. I love my medium roof 148" wheel base with the Ecoboost. I like the shelving you made but decided to outfit mine with Dewalt high van Tough System. You are right though, it's always evolving.
@@dyc9124 I just put the 2 racks on the driver side with just enough space between that I can fit Dewalt saw horses folded up inbetween and enough space in front to keep a Little Giant leaning against the bulk head

When I was still working rotating 12 hour shifts I bought a battery powered lawn mower (our gas mower was an incredible painful machine). Told my Wife now she wouldn't wake when she mowed. She does most of the mowing, so that was ok. That was back in lead acid mower days. Li-ion is a great improvement. She still will not wake me, though no more night shift for me.
I just get a Ford transit van and it seems like I’m gonna steal a lot of your ideas, lol, great video, keep them coming,we’re here to give them thumbs ups
Such a great build out. I just bought a new transit extended. When I load up with material it drags about 80% of the entry and exit in residential driveways. I think I’m going to install air springs on the back. I think if I can raise the back 3” on steeper entry exit that will fix the issue. My only complaints on the 2020 transit is the dragging and the fact that I ordered short power folding mirrors because of the garage I have. Turns out they won’t install the short power fold on cargo vans. I wish I had waited to 2021... they finally moved the hand parking break to a push button. If I could get Ford to make several changes it would be to move the uplift switched to the overhead. I keep hitting mine and turning things on inadvertently
@@InsiderCarpentry yep. I can do that sometimes. I can’t downtown where cars park on the streets often within a foot of the side drives. It also becomes difficult on the south east side of Cleveland suburban area where it’s hilly and a lot of drives are steep. I’d love to see for extend the wheel base on the extended van the way Ram does on the Promaster, we have an extended promaster 3500 also. The transit is a significantly nicer van but also significantly more expensive. I sold my F-150 Platinum.... a truck I loved to drive. I couldn’t justify 2 $68,000 dollar vehicles in my driveway. So I splurged a bit on the Transit. I got the eco boost, AWD, power leather heated seats, up fitter switches, Navigation, 3500, and because of your recommendations, the extended and cargo protection package. We already were using the same partition as you in the ProMaster. So we ordered that. Anyway, now it’s time to build it out. I’m a general contractor. Primarily a new home and addition company. I’ve found that my trades don’t always have everything they need on the job site so I carry most tools and supplies the various trades use. For several years, the various trades I use know my policy is “keep working” let me pickup any materials or tools you find you need. For example, it’s fairly common for my trim carpenters to call and say, we need a sheet of birch plywood, or polar lumber. Also the flooring supplier doesn’t deliver and my flooring and tike installer is slammed. So I pickup all the hardwood flooring, tile, thin-set, mortar, grout, etc, and deliver it. Now.... I’ve just finished double knee surgery and getting ready to have a lower back fusion.... (getting old sucks) so I may pickup the materials but so believe my days of unloading and carrying upstairs is over. Thanks for the video. Great set up, you completely changed the way I see those Ford Transit High Roof. Question, What is the purpose of the electrical pigtail fixed to the front of the shelf with the copper clamps, right above your DW716
It ties into a duplex outlet box which is mounted inside that shelf. The outlets allow me to plug in multiple cargers and microwave. So all I have to do is run a cord to that pigtail and I can power up all my charger and microwave. Comes in handy for small jobs where I don't unload my microwave and chargers.

Notice you also have a pretty heavy duty truck parked right next to it. I imagine they're both great at their specialized tasks. When do you use the truck vs van? Out of curiosity, why both?
Yes, that is the truck I used to pull my trailer with. Its older, and not in the best shape, and not worth all that much. I keep it around so I have something 4x4. But in general the truck barely gets used at all. It would be expensive to have both a nice van and a nice truck. So I've just kept my old truck.
Did you anchor the bottoms of your shelving into the floor or does it just rest on the floor? I just bought a Mid roof and am planning to build my own shelving also. The inside of yours looks fantastic.
The new ford vans come with "upfitter points" which are basically threaded nut inserts that are welded into the van frame. I think there are about 10 on each side of my van. I used those to bolt my shelving to the sides of the van.
@@InsiderCarpentry a lot of the high roof models come with dually wheels - do you have any opinion on single vs dual rear wheels on a van just like yours?

I have the same walls in my new Ford van and want to build shelves like yours but how do you find the outfitter connector points below the plastic sheeting? There’s only like two of them visible.
I love mine. 75k miles in it and zero issues. I think my next one will be the AWD version that they just came out with. Snow, mud, and loose gravel are the biggest inconvenience with this van. AWD would be really nice.
I would love to hear about your layout and design decisions for tool storage and organization inside the van. We have not built our shelving and dividers yet.
Ford makes three lengths, RWB (regular wheelbase 130'"), LWB (long wheelbase 148"), and LWB-EL (long wheelbase 148" + extended cargo)....is this van the LWB or LWB-EL?
hello just wanted to ask if your version of the van is a wheelbase larger than 136 and does that really matter because the ford transit has a 148 wheelbase which i think is the largest for the ford transit
I'm not sure on the exact number. Mine is a 2016 and is the extended high roof version. I've been really happy with the turn radius of my van considering its size. You do have to watch the back on steep driveways as it can bottom out.
As much as i hate Transit and as much as i want Sprinter , my biggest fear with Sprinter is maintenance costs, repairs and rust issue and ofcorse diesel engine. Currently own extended ford 350
Unrelated to the rig...but why did you use what looks like 3/4" ply for the shelving...just curious because I was thinking of using 1/2" or so. I am not a carpenter so forgive me for non precise dimensional reference.
No problem. Its a good question. There are tons of pocket holes screws, and 3/4 works a lot better with pocket hole screws. Also 3/4 is a bit more structurally ridgid for shelves.
Hi I have the same jumbo van in England, I do the same as you and my van is laid out very similar, do you know what weight your van is sat at with the racking and tools in. My van is sitting at 3.4 tons

Spencer love your adding the youtube videos to the IG stuff. So much great info!! Im thinking I want to transition to high top van. Did you look at other makes, like the Dodge Ram promaster, or others or just go right to the ford? If so what tipped scales to the ford? I know Zack Dettmore loves his Dodge think he said mainly based on gas mileage? Lastly what’s cost on a ford set up like yours? Thanks again in advance.
It was more expensive than the promaster. I looked at the promaster but it just seemed more cheaply built. The 16' material capacity was a plus. I'm a ford guy buy nature anyway. Knowing what I know now, the ecoboost engine single handedly tips the scale in favor of the transit. I'd say drive both and see what you think.
Insider Carpentry thanks for the fast reply, I’ve always been a ford guy too and also love the 16’ capability, but wanted to do my due diligence as far as inquiring about other makes, etc. thanks again love your content!

I recently bought a new 2020 Transit. Does anyone know how to locate the threaded anchor points where the bolts actually attach to the interior body of the van? My walls came with black panels that are technically removable, but if there's a diagram with the anchor point locations, I could avoid removing all the wall panels to find them. Thanks!!
You don't need to remove everything. Just remove enough of the fasteners to pull back the black plastic. Measure and drill a hole through the plastic with a spade bit to get access to the anchor points. There are about 8 per side of the van total. I recommend locating and drilling out all of them before you put anything in the van. The bolts on my van were M8. Good luck.
I got a 2020 same van he has 0 miles in march 350 ecoboost dually. I paid around 45,000 here in Houston Texas. I just got lucky. I had to talk with alot of different people to get them to drop the price from 52,000 but I got blessed.
There is a business metric known as the profit/expense ratio. The higher the business expense ratio, the lower the business profit ratio. You are sacrificing profit to pay for top of the line tools and equipment. It's your business to operate as you wish but tools and equipment should be viewed as a means of producing revenue and not personal satisfaction and enjoyment. You do very good work. Your revenue stream should reflect the excellence of your skills and not be limited by extravagant business purchases. Just my opinion.
I have no debt personal or business related. Everything you see is paid for. My operating expenses are extremely minute. I don't know what you're talking about.
Gee whizz Bill. This guy talks all the time about efficient tools and processes. See for example his vids on setting up workflow for window trim and use of clam clamps. And what's wrong with personal satisfaction and enjoyment? There is more to life and work than suffering. Be happy!

Love it. Slight recline. Definitely not all the way back.
@@InsiderCarpentry but seats slide to rear most position (disregarding recline)? Another question, did you bolt your cabinets to van floor, or only to wall anchor points? I have the short wall (passenger/slider door) side of my cargo van build out, learning curve big time! Didn't bolt cabs I built to floor, more like set them on floor for a compression fit, getting decent amount of bounce though. If you bolted to floor let me know how you went about that. Thanks! -Tom
I have the rubber mat on floor. Nothing is bolted to the floor. I only used the wall anchor points.
@@InsiderCarpentry Thanks for the info man! From video definitely looks like you've done a great job! I have a Transit T250 (mid-roof 148" wheelbase), have built-out one side with cabs and looking to build out the other side hopefully during time off in the holidays...This is first cargo van I've owned, such a good way to go (compared to past of working out of pickup truck) and the cargo area build-out is key to keeping stuff organized/stored to make the work day as efficient as possible. Anything to make my day easier in this line of work is appreciated, no doubt! Thanks again for the info man!
I think it’s awesome. Well done. 👍
thank you ...great review
What’s the distance from inside to back door to inside of your cargo separator door with it closed?
Also, what’s the head height of the high top roof?
I have the same question? I have a T150 and trying to get shelving ideas this up is awesome!
Probably 16 feet as he said he fits his trim material as to why he needed the length
I have the same walls in my new Ford van and want to build shelves like yours but how do you find the outfitter connector points below the plastic sheeting? There’s only like two of them visible.
Had to remove the tabs that hold it on, peel it back, locate, drill hole with a spade bit through the plastic to expose them.
@@InsiderCarpentry Is there a trick to removing the tabs so they can be reinstalled or do you just rip them out?
What a nice van im saul from californiana
Any mechanicals problems with the van? I'm in the market for one.
Zero problems. 80k miles and it was only in the shop once. Gear shifter handle had an issue. It’s a great machine.
Any thoughts on leasing vs. owning for your business vehicle? I really like my transit as well 😀.
Owning makes more financial sense to me. But I’ve never really considered leasing in depth.
@@InsiderCarpentry
Why did you use wood for the shelving and not aluminum material?
Hey Spencer! I’m about to but the same van in 2020, do you have any suggestions after owning one for a while ? -Jay Dawes
I love mine. 75k miles in it and zero issues. I think my next one will be the AWD version that they just came out with. Snow, mud, and loose gravel are the biggest inconvenience with this van. AWD would be really nice.
Video on center console?? Please
I would love to hear about your layout and design decisions for tool storage and organization inside the van. We have not built our shelving and dividers yet.
Shawn Herlihy I’ve got another video of organization. I’ll probably post it tomorrow. 👍
Hi,
Could you please let me know where you purchased your internal roof clamps for levels etc
Many thanks, fellow carpenter in uk 👍
amazon. Search for toggle clamps. I may even have them listed in this videos notes. Check there first.

Thankyou very much
What about the 3.2 diesel durability ? Can it last 700 000 km ?
Very nice!!💜
Can you fit 20’ pipe if you open that door between the seats and push them into the cabin?
No, 16'
Ford makes three lengths, RWB (regular wheelbase 130'"), LWB (long wheelbase 148"), and LWB-EL (long wheelbase 148" + extended cargo)....is this van the LWB or LWB-EL?
It's the longest and tallest version.
Good job!
Badass bro...👍🇺🇸
hello just wanted to ask if your version of the van is a wheelbase larger than 136 and does that really matter because the ford transit has a 148 wheelbase which i think is the largest for the ford transit
I'm not sure on the exact number. Mine is a 2016 and is the extended high roof version. I've been really happy with the turn radius of my van considering its size. You do have to watch the back on steep driveways as it can bottom out.
How much was that Divider ?
Love It
big, ugly & comfortable.. like my ex.
I now prefer small, pretty & challenging.
pros & cons..
What's the tow capacity? The tires look really small for a 350.
Just be sure to secure it like fort knocks plus insurance. These things are like magnets for thieves.
Did you consider Sprinter? If so, what led you to go with Ford?
Yes, but it was easy to rule out. Major rust issues. High cost. Huge repair bills. I didn't want diesel.
As much as i hate Transit and as much as i want Sprinter , my biggest fear with Sprinter is maintenance costs, repairs and rust issue and ofcorse diesel engine. Currently own extended ford 350
I like the transits
Unrelated to the rig...but why did you use what looks like 3/4" ply for the shelving...just curious because I was thinking of using 1/2" or so. I am not a carpenter so forgive me for non precise dimensional reference.
No problem. Its a good question. There are tons of pocket holes screws, and 3/4 works a lot better with pocket hole screws. Also 3/4 is a bit more structurally ridgid for shelves.
I didn't notice, but did it have dual wheels on the rear axle? And is that an option?
Yes, it is an option. No my van doesn't have the dually.
Thanks!
Hi I have the same jumbo van in England, I do the same as you and my van is laid out very similar, do you know what weight your van is sat at with the racking and tools in. My van is sitting at 3.4 tons
Did the divider come from ford?
Into The Dirtshop The dealer ordered and installed it with my upfitter cash. But no. It’s made by a company called sortimo knapheide. Or something like that.
They should have done that with the old Fords by covering the walls
No parking brake? RIP transmission
Why not the diesel?
Did you get the all wheel drive version?
No, this is just rear wheel. Maybe someday...
Have you ever needed it
How did you secure the shelving to the floor?
Its not secured in any way to the floor. Only to the side walls.
whats your gpm with all that weight ?
What’s engine you have 3.7?
The Ecoboost engine in the Transit is a 3.5 twin turbo. I have one, it's very fast for it's size.

Ihave my van racked out but have to take my expensive tools out every night here in uk van theif is on the rise you obviously don’t have that problem where you r
I carry an inland marine insurance policy so that my tools are always covered with insurance wherever they are. Makes the risk more palatable.
Never apologize for having your wife mow. 😂😂
I love it
I recently bought a new 2020 Transit. Does anyone know how to locate the threaded anchor points where the bolts actually attach to the interior body of the van? My walls came with black panels that are technically removable, but if there's a diagram with the anchor point locations, I could avoid removing all the wall panels to find them. Thanks!!
I see the bottom anchor points have D-hooks attached at the floor/wall, but there is nothing above to indicate additional threaded anchor points.
Good luck.
@@InsiderCarpentry Thanks!
wish they were 1' 1/2" wider

so this guy looks like his in his late 30s , how did he start his business and when?
Hi everyone
$45,000?
Dallas way more. Probably closer to 60
I got a 2020 same van he has 0 miles in march 350 ecoboost dually.
Be happy!
