    did you wiegh your trailers loaded and empty ? just wondering.

    • @shooshinejonnie
      @shooshinejonnie  5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      No I didn't. I have #7000 of capacity on the axles and I believe the trailer itself weighs in at around #3000. That leaves me with approximately #4000 of capacity. My plywood for the cabinets weighed in around #1400 not including any waste/cutoffs. That leaves me with #2600 of tool capacity. My current guesstimate is I'm running #5500-6000. 🤷‍♂️
      I do need to go weigh it.

      My 8x8x15 trailer with bare essentials (full power tool gang box) and front workbench weighs in at 3,750 and is plated for 7,500. If i fully load up, probably closer to 7,500, not to mention risking over $40k in toys

    I like this tool trailer video. I work in the Southern California area just north of LA and have been struggling with tool storage for years. Been using a Transit van this last few years but still run into issues with being overcrowded in the van with tools and supplies all over the floor. I also own a 16 foot Isuzu box truck but find that impractical for most jobs. I'm tired of walking on everything I own in my $48K van trying to find where I put something from the last job. I'm also very tired of having to always empty out the van at the end of the day just to set up for the next morning's job. I think I'll be looking to buy a long trailer and converting it to meet my needs. My next step is to find a 18 to 20 foot box trailer with that drop down tail gate door. Thanks for the inspiration.... This will save me a ton of time in just being able to find what I need without having to search through my stuff all over my shop and yard.

    • @shooshinejonnie
      @shooshinejonnie  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      My pleasure on the inspiration. I'm glad you found some value.
      I completely understand your frustration Eric. After working out of the back of a pickup truck and a smaller trailer I knew there had to be something better. 18 ft is maybe a few few longer than I would actually need, but I've never run into a place where I couldn't get into the job. I would also be hesitant to give up that extra room. If you're looking for used you kind of have to go with what you find. If you're going to go new I would definitely consider an 8-ft wide and also add a minimum of six inches to the roof height. If you can find one already built like that that would be fantastic. I'm getting ready to publish a video of my father's trailer. His is 6" taller than mine but everything else is exactly the same. Not sure if the difference will convey through video. Thanks for commenting and watching.

    • @erictavitian8378
      @erictavitian8378 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      John, I will definitely look into an 8 foot wide trailer that I can hook up on to my fairly new 1 ton Dodge 3500 Ram. That truck has been sitting quiet in my driveway since I had to purchase it to haul up 4 tons of materials to a job on the Utah/Idaho border last summer. I'll begin searching when I get on the internet later today. There's a ton of stuff I really like that you incorporated into your jobsite trailer. You are now on my "Always to be Watched " list. Thanks again from an old veteran carpenter.

    Hi, I’ve watched many videos on this subject but your video is by far the most comprehensive that I’ve seen.
    What super , practical ideas you have - many of which I’ve tried myself but not to the perfection that you have achieved.
    One question i have is the weight of your trailer - must be quite high - also on security one lock is never quite enough to secure any means of trailor or vehicle.
    Ive lost thousands of ( £ ) even when I’ve had fitted high security interior dead locks to each door + three types of alarm systems to one of my work vans - in less than 10 minutes both rear doors had been removed & all tools & test equipment removed, from a very busy high street parking spot in central London.
    I am building a v/h/voltage lock activated trigger device that only gives a surprise “shock” when door handles are touched and system is triggered on.
    So far this works very good on bench set up & i will install it soon to work van.
    I would be quite worried if i had a trailor as yours with so much equipment on board & left it parked up.
    Ed,

    Cool trailer, I just bought my first trailer and have a couple questions, which type of plywood did you use primarily, and did you buy the slotted plywood for the nail guns etc or did you cut the slots yourself? And how wide is your trailer?

    Lots of great idea in here for mobile tool storage. Those PVC vacuum hose and electrical cord standoffs are brilliant. I suspect if you build trailer number 5, you'll use the ultralight plywood that Ron Paulk used for his latest S.M.A.R.T. trailer build.

I could double up if I had to or carry them inside. I have two ladders that live there and don't come off very much, but I have them when I need them.

    Very nice, just wondering how the wood is holding up as shelving and drawers ? I prefer metal but if it holds up you probably are using a good oak or hardwood? But again, well thought out ! Such an organized trailer, the very foundation of a true tradesman and a job well done .....

      Thank you Guy for the kind words.
      That is a great question. The wood has been holding up extremely well. All drawers are functional and haven't seen any cracking or breaking. The only issue that I can think of at the moment is the removable strip in front of my cubbies. Some of the screws have stripped out and I've had to make a new hole. I used all pine A/C plywood for everything.

      Thanks Zach. I've had places it was tight. I also worked mostly in rural areas for the last two years. I haven't had a situation yet where I couldn't get in or get my tools close enough. I guess if it was more of an issue I would invest in one of the remote trailer movers to get into more tight spaces. I couldn't imagine working out of something that I couldn't walk through. But I guess I would probably adapt if the situation called for it.

    Nicely done, so I read down that it took about 240 man hours, if you dont mind me asking how much do you have into the cost of the build out? Do you leave the trailer at the job site everyday or haul it back home every night?

    • @shooshinejonnie

      Thanks Steve. It was somewhere around $1500-2000 if I remember correctly. I didn't keep close enough tabs to remember correctly.
      If it's a decent area I will leave it on the job site. I do have a megahitch tongue lock and camknot locks on the doors. If someone really wants it badly enough there's not much you can do to stop them.

    A question: I notice on many, like your trailer, the heavier gear is near the tailgate - does this ever cause fishtailing of the trailer when driving on the open road?

    • @shooshinejonnie
      @shooshinejonnie  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a great question. I did have some consideration when I was loading the trailer and building it out about how it was balanced. It's definitely heavier on the tongue than it is on the back. I don't know the exact tongue weight other than my truck drops several inches when I hook up my trailer. I've never had any issues with fishtailing. I appreciate you asking the question. Thanks for watching.

    Great job on the trailer. If you put a tarp roller on the outside up high you could pull it down to two foldable uprights mounted on inside of the drop down gate. Nice spot to make cuts out of the rain

    • @tomkristman1456
      @tomkristman1456 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No I Just thought it’d be a good fit for you. If you pull the tarp down and attach to the foldable uprights then stand them up and lock in place.

    • @tomkristman1456
      @tomkristman1456 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think 10 ft uprights would be a good height. so 2 hinged 5 ft pieces of 1 5/8 unistrut

    • @tomkristman1456
      @tomkristman1456 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it’s a perfect fit the tension of the tarp will hold towards the trailer you’d just need a 45 kicker from upright towards trailer to hold it away
