I'm Malaysian, so I'll give my piece of mind. Malaysia has a secular government, and due to its history of having been colonized by multiple other parties (the British, Japan, Dutch), it has forced the people to cooperate with each other despite having different races and religions. Malaysia is very open and especially kind to visitors and foreigners who respect the law, but what the 1975 has done is the opposite of that. And I also believe that is the case in anywhere of the world if you disrespect the culture and laws there. (Sorry if my english is bad, it's not my first language)
I know someone gay who is actually working in Malaysia. They don't really face the kind of discrimination you'd think they would in there--at least my acquaintance didn't. He interacts peacefully with the locals there regardless of their religion. Just don't do stupid shit. It's just common sense: be respectful and courteous. No matter how liberal the west claims to be, they fail in the sense that a lot of westerners think their standards are the ONLY standards in the world. The fundamental ideology of liberalism is to be OPEN-MINDED and respectful of everyone. Don't go forcing your standards on other countries especially when they are living perfectly fine in their current situation. In case you all don't remember, that is how every colonized nation was treated. I'm a Malaysian and it's did more than that. Despite being a conservative country, Malaysia for the most part allows concerts like these to take place and do their best to be tolerant. Generally, concerts go on like usual and nothing big happens. However, Matty Healy wasn't only drunk when he came up on stage, he also slammed a drone because he claimed it was flying too close to him. If he had just criticised the government, it most likely would have been fine; some quarters would have brought it up but would have eventually died down. But he just had to perform that act too, and that's when the event organisers got the call to cancel the event. It didn't just affect the concertgoers, but there were small food truck businesses who already prepared food for the 3 days and paid rental that were affected. Furthermore, it's set the event organisers back as years of building rapport with the government are now rocky again. What's even more annoying is that Matty Healy hasn't been apologetic to the people affected by his ignorant actions.

Infact, in more urbanised parts of Malaysia like Kuala Lumpur and Selangor you can often be gay without real punishment you will get a lot of side eyes and harassment’s and you can’t legally marry your gay partner but that’s about it. This is due to the fact that Malaysia is only 60% Muslims and 40% others making the government very inclined to adopt secularism despite the protest of more traditional Muslims views mainly coming from rural areas in the state of Terengganu which is a stronghold for a political party known as ‘PAS’. PAS is what you can consider to be the taliban of Malaysia, their ideological views usually involves creating a Malaysia that follows string sharia law. PAS however do not see much success and many people see through their lies and understand how riffle with corruption they are.

I'm a Malaysian and it's did more than that. Despite being a conservative country, Malaysia for the most part allows concerts like these to take place and do their best to be tolerant. Generally, concerts go on like usual and nothing big happens. However, Matty Healy wasn't only drunk when he came up on stage, he also slammed a drone because he claimed it was flying too close to him. If he had just criticised the government, it most likely would have been fine; some quarters would have brought it up but would have eventually died down. But he just had to perform that act too, and that's when the event organisers got the call to cancel the event.
It didn't just affect the concertgoers, but there were small food truck businesses who already prepared food for the 3 days and paid rental that were affected. Furthermore, it's set the event organisers back as years of building rapport with the government are now rocky again. What's even more annoying is that Matty Healy hasn't been apologetic to the people affected by his ignorant actions.
