  • Deep Sky Astrophotography - The Elephant's Trunk Nebula
    The Elephant's Trunk Nebula is a collection of cosmic gas and dust within IC 1396. This incredible deep-sky astrophotography target is located in the constellation Cepheus more than 2,000 light-years away from Earth.
    Full Details: astrobackyard....
    In this video, I'll photograph the Elephant's Trunk Nebula using the Sky-Watcher Esprint 100ED Super APO and a ZWO ASI294 MC Pro Camera.

      AstroBackyard This channel means a lot to me too haha. Summer's over and I'm finally back in the game again, I just took my first guided image from a dark sky and I'm so happy with the result! I have a Lacerta Mgen II standalone autoguider, I'm so glad I found it because there seems to be almost no resources on it online. I'd love to see you talk about it on the podcast or use it and review it one day! From what I've seen it's one of the only standalones that are worth your time. Standalones are definitely so so convenient for guys like me with tiny portable imaging rigs.

Also, how did you manage to get your duoband filter connected in the imaging train? What size filter did you use and how is it all connected. I don't seem to be able to attach filters to my flattener. Cheers

    Thanks for another spot-on video. Could you do one on the pros & cons of reflector vs refractor? I guess for planetary work focal length is primary so a big reflector to the way to go but for dso quality is better so refractor is better & easier (no cool-down period, collimation, weight etc)?

    I have been waiting my whole life to buy a good telescope. For almost a decade I was convinced I wanted a SC type like the Nexstar 8. What do you think of that style? One thing I am learning quickly is that the mounting-tracking setup is more important than I originally had prioritized. I am viewing from zip code 97038 at about 1100 Ft. ASL. My situation in my back "yard/field" is such I can turn off ALL artificial light including street light. I am trying to stay around $1000 with eye pieces and the best stand possible. I would definitely like auto-tracking. What would you recommend?

    • @MCWaffles2003-1
      @MCWaffles2003-1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Watch out, Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes are normally very slow scopes and have a very small viewing angle. Smaller focal lengths with lower focal ratios are best when you start since 60 second subs will actually collect something reasonable. get into slower more zoomed in scopes after youve already gotten a fair amount of equipment.
      i started off with a ritchey chretian 6" on a HEQ5 mount and somethimes wish i had a faster scope. mag 8+ images get tricky needing me to do 100 sec subs and my alignment needs to pretty bang on to not get trailing. saving up for an autoguiding setup now

    • @kevinattig6689
      @kevinattig6689 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MCWaffles2003-1 there's a lot of people using Schmidt cassegrain telescopes for astrophotography, do very well and a lot of gear is made for them to assist with astrophotography.

    • @MCWaffles2003-1
      @MCWaffles2003-1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kevin Attig did i ever say schmidt cassegrains didnt work for astro? i was cautioning that theyre not for beginners, and i should know since i have one. a ritchey cretien is a variant of a schmidt cassegrain
      theyre very slow scopes, and the slower the scope the longer each sub needs to be. the longer a sub needs to be the better the polar alignment needs to be. theyre great for planetary but doing deep sky with them is not easy. a lot of the time theyre focal length is too long so your desired picture isnt even able to fit in the narrow field of view.
      i have an f/9 and thats already insanely to image modest things like the flame nebula at magnitude 8

    • @kevinattig6689
      @kevinattig6689 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MCWaffles2003-1 I was concerned that a beginner would have to go buy an expensive refractor, but just looked at a few and it seems that the price of the refractors are way down in the affordable range. A good 4 to 6 inch refractor used to be 3 times the price of a 8" Schmidt!
