The First Jedi "Paladin"

  • Yord Fandar is the ideal image of what a Jedi Knight during the High Republic should look like. He is clean cut, disciplined and has an air of superiority and confidence about him. But, if we look deeper at the character, there's something hidden behind that confidence. Unlike other jedi in the order, like the much younger and more talented Jecki Lon, things did not come easy for Yord. This jedi knight clearly had to work his ass off in order to obtain his position.

If this weren't an 8 episode run, we'd get episodes around characters like Yord and Jecki, giving their deaths more gravity. In absence of that, we have Generation Tech, and for that I'm thankful.

It may not have been his choice. She was also left behind when retrieving Osha after the prison ship crash. But I do think he also consciously made that choice, too, since he took such personal responsibility for it. Maybe even relieved that he didn't have to bring her against someone he thought was dangerous a second time. I hope we get to see his padawan one more time, someone to remember Yord for the hero and genuinely good person he was.

I keep wondering if yord brought his Palawan to the forest that day.... cause if he did, he was following orders after having a small part of his soul torn when she was finished. But his 1 one goal was to save the citizen as he was told to, someone in over their head. That wasn't for his safety I don't think. It was all for oshas safety

Honestly Yords death was super surprising for a few reasons. First is that he was set up as a main character in the show so I was expecting him, Sol and Osha to survive the fight. Second is just the sheer brutality of his death. We don’t often see someone have their neck broken like that in Star Wars. Usually it’s with the force or something. It was genuinely shocking and gruesome.
Honestly it’s a shame cause I did want to see more of him.

Someone who does everything by the book because he’s already at a disadvantage and can’t afford having to give his superiors any reason to have a problem with him. My .. " .. friends .." since they were doing Weapon-X program flashbacks, agreed they should just get a talent pool of armature actors/stuntmen, or a short 5ft3in stocky guy with a lot of cousins to do a Wolverine series.
Like .." Tales from the Crypt " .. tv series with two or three short 12 to 15minute horror stories.
a.) Stuntmen/body doubles are used for back view filming of the actor running when you don't get face close up.

Logan, " Looks like six miles of bad road on a good day."

Remodeling/paint dressing as needed. Everything is meant to look like distorted memories anyhow. Such scenes can easily be film with stand ins.
c.) It has been years ago, but I seen this short 40minute WW II movie set in in an alley and courtyard with a building clearing. Filmed on location while the city was doing roadwork. Sentinels were first built to fight Transformers, and the threat of giant alien robots trigger humans meta gene creating mutants.
Problem with Superman and giant robots, heat/Xray vision that also pumps EMPs. Make eye contact and burnout sensor equipment.

Yord struck a cord with me and a lot of it was just about how he very clearly did everything he knew to do to be a good Jedi knight. He did what he was taught. How he was trained. He cared about the people of the galaxy, clearly.
And that's what led to his death. He was a compassionate man who put others ahead of himself. He was a good Jedi knight, and in his death he was failed by the Jedi. Not himself.

I knew guys like Yord in the infantry. Very good, knowledgeable, disciplined garrison soldiers who handled their assignments without questions. Yet, while mostly competent, they were uninspired in the field. I was exactly the opposite. A very good, knowledgeable, inspired field soldier who achieved objectives and made suggestions. Yet, while mostly competent, a pain in the ass in garrison. They made rank while I avoided losing it. As we spent much more time in garrison, they were better adapted to the Army's structure and flourished, while I languished in boredom and beer. They managed in the field while I came alive. I felt he was in over his head, especially given he was basically a newly minted Jedi Knight and therefore not as experienced as other, more seasoned Jedis. The fact he figured out how to use the helmet against its owner showed he was a lot smarter than a lot of people thought he was.
He died defending the people he cared about, and I really wish he (and Jecki Lon) was still alive.

I would say all of them who went to the planet even Sol were over their heads. Only ones who overcame that was Yord and Jecki. Jecki almost beat "The Stranger" in one on one fight until he pulled a trick with slitting his lightsaber into two and slaying her. Yord using the helmet against "The Stranger" shows he had good battle sense but he underestimated his enemies physical fighting prowess and got his neck snapped.
"The Stranger" is not a master clearly. No darkside master would be losing against a padawan and only winning by using before unseen trick.

And then Jecki. And I suddenly got how this show is going to go. It's not pulling punches, and Yord is the one that solidified that. He wasn't waving death flags around. I thought he would survive to the last episode, but no. I cared, and his death, like Jecki's, had meaning in the meaninglessness of it. A good man brought low by duty and a force no Jedi has been prepared for. Yord was a hero. And the real tragedy is... I don't think anyone will survive to remember that by the end of this. RIP Yord. I don't know why anyone would hate him. He is earnest, overly concerned with appearing professional and Jedi like, and obsessed with being a by the book Jedi because he doesn't have the natural talent and had to work his ass off to get where he is. He is also honest and honourable. He was a good guy that represented the inflexible hubris of the Jedi Order at their height but he had the potential to change and listen to others. Loved Jecki repeatedly putting him in his place but always felt bad for him because he was trying so hard and dedicating to being the perfect Jedi as he saw it. The way he went out compared to Jecki was the perfect representation of their comparative abilities and careers as Jedi. If we could keep one I'd choose Jecki but was very sad to see him go. He could have grown into what the Jedi order really needed. We need more Yords, maybe the Jedi's fate would have been different if he had lived and risen to a position of more influence.

I would not mind a prequel story that portrays Jackie and Yord when they where young competing for a place as padawan and or knight. When we have seen young Jedi (Like Ahsoka and Cal) we have mostly seen those talented and easy learning younglings who made quick work through the ranks but rarely those who struggle to even make the cut. I would also like to see younglings who dont make it into padawan and has to live theyre life as temple guards or simular unfancy work in the temples. J.

The Jedi are a bunch of quitters. When the going gets tough, they run and hide. Yoda quit, Obi Wan quit, Luke quit, half of the Jedi involved in getting Osha, quit. I mean honestly at least Leia was actively involved in the rebellion fighting the empire. She could have just lived the comfortable life of a senators child. But as an untrained force sensitive she fought. The rest of the Jedi just went in to hiding.

And just when you started to really like him, episode 5 comes along.
I started to really like him in the scene, where he talked about the language he learned. Everyone learning Wookie and he decided to learn the language of the tracker. It felt like his one 'not out of the book' thing. Maybe it was something were no other youngling would have made fun of him, because if he's the only one studying it, he's the only one excelling in this lesson.
I wish they were more episodes to get to know the character a little bit more, but I kind of feel like they did this on purpose. "You start to like this character? GoT is not the only show, that can hurt you!"

There are also some historical examples of the person who is not naturally gifted but works hard to get good enough. It makes me think of Manfred von Richthofen, today known to most as The Red baron (a moniker that most likely was never used in his lifetime, because everyone knew perfectly well who he was. Manfred started as cavalry in 1914 but soon wanted to become a flyer. He became an observer which meant he sat behind the pilot, handling clumsy cameras, threw some puny bombs by hand and manned the defensive machinegun.
But he wanted to be a pilot and started training with a friend. But unlike many of the early combat aces of WWI he was not a natural. He was clearly not a gifted pilot. And when he finally got to make his first soloflight it ended in a crasch. But he presisted, trained and in the end even got selected by the leading german ace, Oswald Boelcke, to join his hand-picked fighter unit.
From Boelcke he learned that tactics are more important than flying skills and that it was the team that mattered. He took these lessons to heart and soon became commander of his own fighter squadron and it was then that he painted his plane red. While becoming a skilled pilot most agreed he was not the most skilled when it came to handling an aircraft, that was Werner Voss.
But Voss died when he tried to fight about 6 enemy pilots in total alone. His skill kept him in the fight for a long time and his opponents all agreed they had never before seen anyone being able to do the things he did with his aircraft. But his opponents were also veterans and most important of all, they stuck to using tactics and working as a team and in the end, they nailed Voss.
Thing is, had Manfred von Richthofen got caught in the same situation, he would have made a run for it as soon as he could. And he probably would not have gotten himself into a fight like that without his wingmen.
But Manfred von Richthofen became and remains the most famed and well-known fighter pilot in history with his 80 confirmed kills. There were others that were his equals, most of all the french pilot Rene Fonck, who had 73 confirmed kills. But if you go for total numbers of claimed kills they ranks more or less equal. It was just that Manfred were lucky to have witnesses present that could confirm his claims more often that Fonck. Fonck was more of a lone hunter but he relied on tactics and knowing his aircraft in and out rather than aerobatic stunts. Manfred was more of a teamplayer but also put tactics first.
Fonck was known to be difficult and sometimes came of as arrogant. But when he was put in charge of a training a group of new pilots he put to work with his focus on details. He made sure they got the chance to fight and intervened only when it was necessary. And he never lost a single one of his "padawans".
Manfred got injured and could have gotten a safe deskjob. In fact his superiors wanted him too. But he simply refused with the question. "When does all the soldiers in the trenches get out of there? As long as they have to stay and fight, so shall I."
When he got shot down, it was because he got tunnel vision thanks to his own cousin who was totally green got attacked. He seem to have forgotten all of his rules for air combat and chased the attacker long in over allied lines only to be shot down by ground fire.
The knights of the air is nothing but a fancy myth but the story show that indeed, the guy who is pretty crap but who keeps on training and take the teaching he gets to hart can end up being the best in the end. Because no one even remember Werner Voss, who was probably the most gifted of the german pilots. But gifts and skill will only get you so far if you do not combine them with tactics and teamwork.

I enjoyed your analysis and commentary. Was an interesting point of view of the Yord Character.
The tragedy of Yord, was just as he started to act and be the least bit interesting in the show, they killed him off.
