This was the only game I watched in the tournament and during the 1st period I thought finland was really good but I quickly realized it was just US playing bad, they were on another level for the rest of the game
I think part of it is that the US doesn't make the same mistakes that Canada has been making with team selection. They take their best players available while Canada tries to make theirs fit into a certain mold of player
I worked the World U-17 Challenge in 2022 and after watching both Hagens and Eiserman tear everyone up i said to myself, "watch the US at the world juniors in 2-3 years." And here we are.

US shutdown Finland after their 3rd goal. I think the US limited Finland to like 7 or 8 shots the rest of the game? That's over 30 minutes and just 8 shots. Compared to the US getting over 30 shots in the same game time.
I 100% agree with you about the OT/shootout thing. In deciding games there should be only 5v5 20min periods until someone scores. The 3v3 works well in long regular seasons but in playoffs and tournaments after group stages there should be always 5v5 to decide the winner. 3v3 just isn't hockey, especially when still playing 20min periods. There is too much time and space and it becomes boring for viewer but also only highlights individual skill and not team effort. I still believe that US would've won if the rules were like this. Finns just lost the drive after the 3-3 goal and never really recovered. So well played and deserved win for USA.
I don't think I will ever understand hockey fan's hatred of the shootout. I grew up in a soccer house so I was raised on basically the opposite of how hockey handles it: regular games can end in ties and the big games are the ones with OT and the shootout.
It's fine when it's a regular game or an early tournament match, but a knockout stage game, never mind the Final, shouldn't be decided on a skills contest.

With the way college hockey is improving here in the states this could be a good start to a time when the USA should be a gold medal favorite for every tournament unless the don’t have good players

Sweden, Findland, and the Czech's will always be strong (lets not forget Russia will be back some day as well). Bottom line, no tournament will be easy for any team and every nation will need to bring their best players if they hope to contend.
With OT, maybe give one 20 minute period and then a shootout. I get the argument against shootouts, and as a former soccer goalie I should probably be against them, but I also love the idea of a one on one skill match.
Boston College Hockey ... big tournament for the Eagles, tournament winner (Teddy Stiga), MVP (Leonard), all 3 on top line of tournament (Hagens, Perreault, Leonard) ...

USA has almost 10 times the population of Canada. And even more than 10 times the population of most of the hockey countries of the world (except Russia), plus has more money to put into their hockey programs. Now that hockey has gained more popularity in USA, they should be the favorites. Plus Hockey Canada decided to put together an OHL team, and forgot the rest of Canada existed.
It’s so amazing for hockey watching countries other than Canada win international tournaments, no shade to Canada either it’s just hard to grow a game when 1 country utterly dominates.
WDYM, Canada last utterly dominated hockey maybe 50 years ago? Admittedly though, Juniors they've dominated only 15 years ago, if that's what you're referring to.
Finland looked gassed and like they’ve never played 3v3 OT before. You could tell it was just a matter of time as to when the US was going to take the game in OT. I think the fins only managed one shot on net and pretty much never reliably controlled the puck in OT
Good for the states. Hoping Canada fields a better more disciplined team next year. I want USA vs Canada rivalry to be the true headline. Not just the espn headline
Canada doesn't even have a program. It took the Americans 40 years to get here. We do half-ass development camp in the Summer and then a mini camp in Nov-Dec and play 2 or 3 exhibitions games. Meanwhile the Yankees starting at the U18 have been playing together for 2 years in internationally and in the USHL (which was designed for the USNDP to play in)... then in the U18 tourney in April/May all our players are in CHL playoffs/memorial cup. So we're good. Imagine if Canada actually had a full-time national team like all the other countries and our NHL 18 and 19 year olds played. Loosing out on medals for two consecutive years for the first time in like 40 years might be the kick-in-the-ass we need to create a real program.
Nothing explained Canada’s failures better then Cameron not having his practicing. The US, Swedes, Finns etc all know each other well because they play and practice together. Canada took a bunch of guys ( mostly from Ontario) and threw them together. You need guys who know each other and the practice is a way to learn to know each other better
USA was good, no doubt, Canada was bad no doubt, but I am more excited about the performance of alternative teams. Finland almost had them in the finals, Latvia beat Canada, and only lost to Sweden by 1 goal (mind you severely outplayed). Czechia played fairly well - enough to knock out Canada though again, Canada wasn't it's best shape. This tournament is becoming more competitive and I love to watch some of the other teams. It's like F1... there's Verstappen in P1 most often... but the better competition is in the middle of the pack, and this tournament is becoming just that.
i was surprised Leonard got the MVP. He was pretty unimpactful in a lot of the games whereas Cole Hutson dominated and controlled pretty much every game
First half of the game Finns outshot the Americans and had more offensive time by a lot. I think a couple questionable missed calls against finland fired up a new cylinder in the states engine cause they turned it on after that. Well deserved win and a great gold medal hockey game from both teams.
Honestly, I think most Canadians are salty with Hockey Canada and not with the tournament results. Canadians are tired of back-to-back years of questionable team selection, questionable coaching, and certainly with Hockey Canada's direction. I'd bet that things are going to change before next year and I doubt Canada will go 3 years in a row with an early exit.
The Americans showed how well they learned the CANADIANS game.... Displayed their American pride.... and the Arrogance that they lead the World in also. ..
Finland played great in the 1st and most of 2nd. It was only after the 2nd goal that things quit going Finland 's way. The fins could've won. Their goalie was great.
For the last few years I've been saying that US teams and players will be consistently better than Canadian teams players in 15-20 years. Yes, Canada has Crosby, McDavid, Bedard, et al, but how long will it be before we see those players be American? Our goaltenders are already better, it won't be long until our forwards are too. Probably the next generation.
The USA team didnt play well at all for 1st half of the game. Finland was playing tight and hard, but just got out lasted by usa. Ot was up to anyone for the win. I dont like the 3vs3. If the any leagues are going to keep it, they need to make a half court rule, where the puck cant be taken back across the red line.

As a caps fan, this makes me happy. Go Leonard!
Hutson too.
I wonder how Bedard would have done? or Celebrini...
they were busy ripping it up against the men in the NHL though
Coach Carle is the real deal! Future NHL coach.
how did i just find out my favorite star wars channel also has a channel for my favorite sport
Maybe first OT 5v5, second 4v4, third on 3v3?
foreign kids in the college game has lifted the domestic talent pool. same with men&women us soccer nat squads
It’s a short-duration tournament. OTs can’t go on too long because they play the next day.
Finland played a great game though but this was Canada’s worst year. They lost to Latvia! Yet, Latvia played pretty good.
Weird choice to show multiple clips of the first Finnish goal while the narration is praising how well the US did...
Whats up with the rangers, dude?! @Eck
You trying to give this man a heart attack?! 😂
U.S. went full belt to ass mode this year, like the drunk dad who can't find his beer fetchers.
I agree. It’s the championship, 3v3, what!? It’s all or nothing. Should be 5v5 until someone scores. Ridiculous rule.
Still shocked Sweden didn't get a medal after what they were able to pull of in the round robin.
Finland is getting remarkable at tournament hockey.
Well they losy in OT in the semis and after 14 penalties in the bronze game, very small margins.
A hot goalie can carry a team. Rimpinen nearly carried Finland to a gold medal.
@@kylemayer8486 wdym getting finland won this tournament first time in 1987 we have 3 more golds than sweden?
@peltimies2469 that 25 years ago, Finland weren't contenders in every level of national tournament, and don't pretend like they were.
And BOTH Cole and Ryan are prospects for the Capitals. Future good for them.
Only half crazy. A 3v3 OT for the elim games.
It should be five on five till someone scores
Canada has won five straight twice.
beauty vid
i was surprised Leonard got the MVP.
Thanks for giving us props. Most Canadians are salty, and THG didn't even talk about the tournament. 😊
Displayed their American pride.... and the Arrogance that they lead the World in also. ..
Cole Hutson and Ryan Leonard are cap’s prospects
USA is 🔥 right now.
Most (like 99.99%) of Finns are not salty at all,. We froze and only began defending after our 3-1 lead. Congrats to USA.
Finland played great in the 1st and most of 2nd. It was only after the 2nd goal that things quit going Finland 's way. The fins could've won. Their goalie was great.
its simple, i see an eck vid, i click
For the last few years I've been saying that US teams and players will be consistently better than Canadian teams players in 15-20 years. Yes, Canada has Crosby, McDavid, Bedard, et al, but how long will it be before we see those players be American? Our goaltenders are already better, it won't be long until our forwards are too. Probably the next generation.
3v3 is awful.
It isn't real hockey anymore. It's more like a pickup game when nobody shows up.
Capitals drafted both Ryan leonard and Cole Hutson.
If the states hadn't got lucky bounces it would have been finland.
Yes you’re crazy. 5 on 5 OT could take for ever
Its actually 10 minutes ot 3v3 then a shoutout
This guy definitely did not watch the game if he sways that the US was better for the 2 first periods, team Finland battered US and got possession in the US d zone for over 1 minute more often than one
Has Ryan Leonard been on that team for a decade lmao, guys like the van wilder of college hockey
Man i love the USA's uniforms. We should wear these in the Olympics.
Team USA = Team Minnesota and tokens from the other states.
