I think that with Rantanen the draft went just like it was supposed to go at the time. He is just one those players that grow better every year until they are like 35-40 years old. He has been topping his own performance almost each year and he is only 28 years old now. Also glad he got a chance to be part of very competitive lineup. Yup, there is McKinnon with him, but Rantanen proved that he doesn't really need him to score and carry. They just make so perfect center-wingman duo in the league it's pleasure to watch.
Watched Mikko win the world juniors and everyone said he was the most ready European player to enter the league. After a year of development in the AHL he was thrown into the fires on a BAD Avs team put up respectable numbers. The rest is history, he shown he can play in any situation or setting good or bad. Great hockey player
@@danielpetrucci8952 depends on what you have and what you need. Watching on draft day that year, I was hoping that Rantanen was going to be a player available at #11 overall. I was positive the Panthers were going to pick him if he was available. But of course, just like in 2013. The Avalanche picked the guy right in front of the Panthers that I was sure the Panthers were going to pick, and fit what they needed. (Although obviously the 2013 1st round pick for the Panthers still went really well 😉) I sometimes wonder how that would have changed things if the Panthers were able to draft him. I think The Avs would have been ok. They're a well run organization, and they would have made something else work (heck, maybe they do something, like draft Connor). But for the Panthers it might have accelerated things a bit. They didn't even use Crouse before they traded him. Rantanen would have been a big boost up from the nothing they got out of Crouse.
I thought sharks were going to draft Rantanen. He was there at 9 I thought it was a no brainer. I saw a future superstar and instead we took Timo Meier instead.
@@jonnenaamupala7857 He was in the playoffs and had over 60 points in hos rookie season. The only reason he went to the Avalanche was they moved from second to first in the draft lottery after a strike shortened season. They were never a rock bottom rebuild team. They had previously drafted Landeskog and Duchene at #'s 2 and 3 a few years prior to Nate. So he wasn't their first piece of the puzzle. The cupboard was not bare when Nate arrived, they just did not have the defense/goaltending after the playoff run during Mackinnon's rookie season.
With rantanen he walked into an atmosphere that almost guaranteed success, all he had to do was put the work in. Give him credit because he did work very hard, however when you get to play with McKinnon and landeskog, and Duchene, and O'Reilly in their youth and prime and even 2 good coaches it's much easier to develop and succeed than the dumpster fire that is the Sabres or coyotes, or even the devils and a lot of other teams. I've been watching the sharks management and I'm pretty sure Mike Grier is building the same foundation that the avs had in those days. They're gonna be really good in about 3 to 5 years.

Avs have drafted every Fin they could get their hands on since. I think the Avs feel that Finnish hockey players are undervalued.

Yeah, but there was a comparison.
I mean Rantanen got drafted as a top six winger where the team had young 1C Nathan MacKinnon.

Yeah, this is what I was coming to say. He's got Nate as a center, if he went earlier to the Coyotes.....who knows
