Hey Vince I usually just pour 25-50 berries in a small bowl of warm tap water. Wait about 30 minutes and the berries can be smeared apart and the good seeds sink to the bottom of the bowl. Those are the good seeds as the floaters and goji berry shells can be used elsewhere. I harvested a few hundred good seeds in less that 5 minutes of work! Remember the seeds that sink to the bottom are the good ones :) I hope that this helps others as this is SUPER fast and efficient!
To make things easier in the future, if you soak the berries they'll plump up and if you pinch them the seeds will all burst out cleanly. Then you can use a teaspoon to spoon out the seeds floating in the water. I learned this from an elderly Tibetan woman. It was so simple and effective I was in awe.
That's actually how I eat the red gojis ... when I by then they are kind of dry like raisins and I cover them with just enough water and wait an hour or two and I get more flavor but it's also much easier to get the seeds
This was so helpful! I tried growing goji berries a few times, and never got past the sprouting stage. Now I know they need to stay indoors for two years 🙈 Thank you so much!
I did this method and they sprouted within two weeks! Just out of pure curiosity I stuck a few whole berries in another pot, and about a week after the first ones came up, the whole berries have sprouted as well! Now I’m going to have more berry seedlings than I know what to do with 😅
I have a plant which is only one year old and it's giving me hundreds if not thousands of berries. What I do is I bury fish guts around the soil of the plant. ( I love fishing.) and water it with washing from the cleaning of fish and chickens. This really help with the plant's growth and fruiting.
Thank you! After this vid i tried my own and right around a week i have about 50 goji seedlings super crowded but glad to see them come up. going to wait to thin out in their own pots
Also I wanted to comment on your method of lifting the seedlings. If you extract in that manner any zones of maturation may be severed causing slow growth. Simply squeezing on the sides of the plastic pot and dumping it into your hand and separating in clumps gently ensures that your plants chances of injury is higher.
Thank for this video. I planted my goji berry two weeks ago and now their about 1 inch tall. I will experiment with one of them and plant it outside and keep the remainder of them indoors and see what will happen.
Did he ever uploaded any video update of this goji plants? Since youtbe fked up the channel video searching it only appears other people's channel videos instead of his videos.
I have planted seeds twice and they sprout beautifully but they don’t get any bigger and die. They are inside with a grow light. Not over watering. Any suggestions?
Great video thank you ....what soil mixe did you say was right ....i live in England ....cold country the soil is naturally acidic ....so need some advice on the right soil mixe .....thanks again ....
Had no trouble germinating these and potting them on, but now they have stuck at tiny size in their pots and seem to be making on growth at all... several have now died. I have used good quality potting compost and they are in 3 inch pots which are in the polytunnel and well watered. What's going wrong? Unless they start growing I won't have plants big enough to overwinter. Should I put them outside now?
I get my goji to sprout but soon they die after that. Using a perilite mixture. They are so delicate even spraying them to water seems to do seem of them in. Anyone have any tips? Thanks. Good video.
Thanks for the note. Looking at the pictures online the hawthorn berry is round with a 'tail' whereas mine look like the goji berry teardrop shape. Guess I will have to wait till the spring to find out. Now I am wondering if multiple seeds were just compacted in the center and I never noticed. Thanks again.
Hey! Hope all is well. Thank you so much for positing this beautiful tutorial. I would like to know how often should I water them and how much water should I use? Also, I'm interested in planting golden berries. I'm guessing it's the same process, right? Look forward to hearing from you. Thanks!
One small problem and item to be aware of. I'm in my third year of gogi berries and was just expecting a nice crop. Just as they where pumping but not totally ripe and i had decided 2 or 3 days, my whole crop got hit with the yellow jacket wasps an wiped out the whole thing, leaving me nothing but black wilted fruit. Just something to watch for.
The answer to your problem is Boric acid. Boric acid or boric acid salts like Borax, dissolved in fruit juice, in a pet bottle, attracts wasps, but not bees, and the bottle neck prevents butterflies and alike from entering. Boric acid is a natural compound that kills wasps, ants, termites and cockroaches, while being harmless to most other animals. Even small doses kills, but slowly, so what happens is that wasps collect the juice (they don't like the taste of the acid concentrate) and brings it home to feed the colony, and thereby kills the entire colony, and the source of your problem. This is used in bee keeping, as bees are not interested in nectar (juice) only pollen. Wasps eat anything, including nectar, goji berries and bees. 🤗
@@calysagora3615 fascinating! I am going to try this. I understand that this is completely off topic but do you have any success in killing squash bugs?
@@davidvick1078 I don't think I've had that particular problem. For tiny stuff just spraying with soap water often helps, basically water without surface tension gets into their epidermal breathing and drowns them. Otherwise an effective pesticide is letting nicotine from a cigarette soak in water over night, then spray the plants and water with it. Nicotine is a strong nerve toxin that immobilize them to death. Lastly for bugs that don't fly, sprinkling diatomic earth around plants help, and for most ants, regular cinnamon is a very effective repellent. Good luck!
I have some dried goji berries im planting the seeds from and the other day I came across some darker ones planted here in minnesota so I took some seeds to plant. I heard those help keep the deer out of my garden naturally but I wonder about all the deer n turkey poo showing up in the yard...lol
When they are young its safe to keep them moist - when they are about 10 centimeters tall you can wait until the soil is dry before watering again. If they start to look limp after not watering them for a few days, give them some water.
How large will the mature plant get and can I grow them exclusively indoors or do they need to be fertilized by bees in order to produce fruit? I could keep them outside on the patio in a big planter....how large of a planter will I need? Also, how many berries can I expect to harvest for each plant and do I need two plants to get fruit? Thank you very much! Also, do I need to fertilize the bush?
Good info. Thanks for letting us know to keep indoors for 1 year, I bought my seeds off Ebay from China, no English directions so yeah I would have killed them.
You don't have to do anything to the seeds before you plant them ... like let them dry out or something, or refrigerate them for a certain amount of time?
Great, but you didn't talk about watering. They can easily die from too much watering, then they droop when they don't get enough, so it's good to just water them a little from the outside of the pot when they start to droop. Also yours at two weeks look like they've grown a lot more than mine. After two weeks mine look barely larger than after a few days. And I keep them by the window and it's warm, so I don't know about that. Will keep trying though.
Thank you for posting the video, it was very informative. At around 2 minutes and 7 seconds (2:07) into your video, is a pot with a few plants. There are about 3-4 plants that are the same. Can you please tell me what kind of plants they are? I have a plant in my garden that randomly started growing last summer. and it looks just like yours. But I have no idea what it is. I thought that maybe it's a type of oak? Please let me know, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!
I sowed some seeds this year in a greenhouse, they vary from 18" to 5ft high, the leaves are now turning yellow, do I need to cut the stem down? I will be keeping them in an unheated greenhouse. Thanks
Hello, I tried growing goji plants from seed, but I wonder whether they need to be grafted, or whether they will be fruitful even without treatments. Some people say that cutting or grafting are better ways to propagate fruit plants; does this apply for goji plants too?

ooooh, they can grow big. I'm not sure they need the bees to get busy. You can start with a very small planter. I'm not sure about how much you could harvest, but probably from a nice old tree you could get a couple of KG.
I have been growing gogi plant but noticed white specks on leaves recently. I do not know what to do. What pH should the soil be?. And is it fine to keep it in a pot as it is now? I need advice as my poor gogi berry plant is looking sick. HELP

Great to hear you enjoyed it - definitely definitely worth doing, very very easy and super rewarding.

You can add a crashed egg shell, it works wonderfully
Thanks for the tip, man!
Don't you get some mold or bacteria or other issues when you bury the fish guts in the soil
I soaked my berrys before removing the seeds. they got all plump and the seeds came out very easily. This was a Great video my friend :)

Great video on growing gojis from seeds. Love these plants!
They're easy to grow from cuttings too.
Thank you, sir!! This is most certainly the best Goji How To vid published. Most appreciative! :D
Nice video. Ive just bought some red and black gojinberry seeds for starting next spring and I'm excited to grow more perennial fruits!
did the seedlings die later? you switched to growing from goji cuttings at the end...
Wonderful video! Very clear and pleasant to watch. I am going to try this! Thank you!
That seed raising mix looks great.

Great video chap. I'm going to grow these along my South facing fenceline in NC in a week a month or so.
Great informative video matched with a soothing voice.

What were the results from your test? I am planting from seed this season for the first time.
What did was soak the dried goji berries in water for a few hours and the seed squeezed right out
Did he ever uploaded any video update of this goji plants? Since youtbe fked up the channel video searching it only appears other people's channel videos instead of his videos.
I've also seen a video wherein the man just planted the berry whole, with great success. I'm sure either method works fine.

Mine always fall over to the side after they are about half an inch tall
then die. Please advise what to do for this problem. Thanks.
Damping off fungus. Too wet and cold. Try soil free mix, vermiculite and or perlite. A Heat mat is great in cold climates.
works great! i put 2 seeds into my aerogarden and in 3 days they are over an inch tall!
How often do I water the seedlings and Goji bush once it produces fruit
GREAT VIDEO, FINALY A LEARNING HOW TO GROW GOJI BERRIES. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
HI, Can you post a current picture of your plants? They should be 4.5 years now?
Im waiting 4 yrs now.
