I’m having some health issues with my joints, but we had a family trip planned for New York City. This th-cam.com/users/postUgkxuxJwamLFanm476LC5WPeTouyyU1GXomC was perfect! It’s lightweight enough that my friend could carry it up or down stairs when we needed to. (I can walk very short distances) It was comfortable for me to sit in, I would say if you’re super tall it might be a little cramped. I’m 5’1” and the foot rests were the perfect height. This may not be the best one for long term use, you get what you pay for, but for something that fits our budget that gives me accessibility while we deal with my health this was amazing.

I was a college professor and longtime wheelchair user. I found that even in new construction and new smart classrooms with built-in AV tech, they made it great for students, but nearly impossible for teachers. I worked with my University to get just one of the high-tech classrooms set up to be wheelchair accessible for a teacher or anyone doing s presentation. I think it's a real blind spot in educational institutions to bend over backwards to accommodate students while not even imagining that faculty and staff might be wheelchair users too!

I’m a professor at Johnson & Wales University and Community College of Rhode Island.
Right now, CCRI is renovating its restrooms to make the wheelchair accessible for faculty.
Because of the campus was built prior to ADA, there are no accessible restrooms that faculty in wheelchairs can use.
It has been quite a frustrating and demoralizing experience to deal with. When you were a student there is a lot of support, but when you’re a faculty member, it’s a very tough road. Luckily I am retired army and I’m not afraid to be assertive, but my heart goes out to new faculty members who use wheelchairs who are in a similar position.

@@irenedavo3768psychology, the neuroscience/brain research part. Counseling is too scary! I am now retired, but sing and tour internationally with an elite choir. Its a similar story. Accomodations for audience, no concept that a performer might need mobility access! "RAMP YOUR BRAIN FOLKS!"

Such a change in Sofie. I remember the video when you got her. She was so inside her own head and not that affectionate. To watch her respond to commands so fast and to be so loving and trusting with the kisses. Augh. Made me choke up a bit. I know she has helped Cole, but I also think you guys helped Sofie to come into herself. I think people take it for granted, but when you think about it you bring this dog into your lives; another species. And then you speak this foreign language to her and she needs to find a way to understand. That on top of any personality/social issues that might make that a struggle for her. You guys have done such a beautiful job helping her to adjust and then teaching her this job to assist Cole. Simply amazing!!

I used to say to myself "Businesses should get a warning or an opportunity to be compliant, why so harsh?" BUT NOW, thanks to you guys, I get how important it is to think of the "different able" people like Cole. All builders, business owners and others should have in mind to be ADA compliant from the beginning of the idea of a business or a construction. Thank you for sharing your wonderful videos ;)

Thank you Cole for sharing your experience. I have experienced very similar things both in community college and now as a Kansas State University student. While at Cloud County community college I was the only student on campus with a disability for my entire 2 1/2 years journey there. I haven’t been back but it would be great to go back and see if any additional improvements have been made. I know that I did advocate for and make some changes while I was there. It would be great to see how they have impacted current students

So i saw someone ask, but can’t find the comment anymore. Richmond is a private school so they do operate a little differently than public institutions. However the ADA only specifies that the student have ACCESS to extracurriculars and educational opportunities, so moving classes to an accessible building does qualify under ADA. Also can confirm, Cole was pretty quiet in college, but he FLEW down that hallway in the commons. Don’t let him fool ya hahaha

I was not the only wheelchair user at my college, but I am the first to speak out about what I think could be improved. I was very close with the Dean, so I was vocal about what accommodations I needed, especially in the winter. This Dean made me feel very welcome when I decided to attend my now alma mater, Kuyper college (I went to a private Christian college in Michigan). He listened to every idea I had to make the campus more accessible, from including me in workouts that were available to all students to moving Bible studies to a floor that was accessible to me. It was a very small campus, so overall, it was not that bad of an experience. The Dean actually asked me to send him a document of all the things I think could be changed or improved to be more accessible to all students. I was happy to do that! I can't wait to see what changes they make! It is nice to see that Cole's college did the same thing. It just goes to show that little changes make all the difference and it will make everyone's experience better, regardless of disability! Yay for accessibility!

I'm literally the only one in a wheelchair at my college. After shepherd center I refused to go back to highschool for my senior year out of pure embarrassment, and not wanting to face people who either had beef with me and even people that liked me, because I just didn't want them to look at me weird. Anyway, college is nice, and I have ran into some old peers and ex gfs from highschool who have stopped me to say hi, I just can't do the attention tbh, I'll have a panic attack lol School was always the same but people, and being able to just go use the bathroom during class and have someone help me open the door to get out is annoying to me and interrupts the class and everyone looks at me which I hate.

It’s very daunting to be the first because you don’t know much of anything and you really do need understanding bosses to be able to make it- and while my program was not specifically designed for wheelchair users in mind (Chem PhD here I go!!), I certainly am glad I’m able to open up the path for wheelies in the future!

If you don't mind, could you elaborate on how to work in the lab as a wheelchair user? I've always thought that it might be hard as a biochem major. Most things are designed for standing, at least at my uni. I guess you could get a lowered bench for some things but a lot of work goes on under fume hoods (? English is not my first language) that you can't adjust etc.

      @@ChiaraBells Hello! Yes, I don't mind elaborating.
You're right that a lot of things are designed for standing and I do take into account the fact that my wheelchair seat can go up (much like Cole's wheelchair).
It has been difficult for me to find accommodations but here in the US, it's the law to accommodate people with disabilities. The Chemistry research labs actually had no accommodations whatsoever, and because I'm in the program, they've had to do several modifications to the lab I'm working on. One such accommodation is to install an accessible fume hood. Wheelchair-accessible fume hoods do exist! (at least here in the US), which have lower benches and it's easier for a wheelchair user to reach. Another huge thing I'm working on right now is to get an assistant. Someone to do the physical tasks that I can't do- for example; I cannot go into the NMR instrumentation room because of the magnets, so my assistant would be the one to physically go to the NMR room and put my samples and then I would just analyze them. Here in the US, I can argue and get what I need but I'm not sure about other countries. I hope this helps!

Cole- you are right; I feel the memories were both good and bad, but so glad you want back to share all the improvement the school made to comply with the ADA for all future students with disabilities.👍

Cole looks amazing- love the new tat! And I love Charisma's braids 🥰! Really cool to look back on your experience, and the changes that were made and more that are coming for accessibility. We all need to do more so that this is just second nature for everyone.
Oh and loved the old school vid of Cole whipping it in the snow 😂😂😂

I’m pretty sure my university is one of the most accessible in Canada (I could be wrong) but a part of this is because there are approximately 5km of underground tunnels that take you to almost every building on campus. If one buildings tunnel entrance isn’t accessible there is for sure a building very close by that can be accessed to get to where you need to go. It was great!!!

Heck ya! You had Alaska on your signs for distances from the Uni that’s cool! Man Cole! You still sounded like you had a wonderful collate experience. I hope you share this when you give speeches about accessibility because a lot of disabled maybe feel the same as you; but really the body maybe broken but the mind sure isn’t. I hope they see this and are encouraged to go too! Thanks for sharing it with us.

I had a simile experience: I am a vet and was one of very few students who used a wheelchair.
I dealt with a lot of able ism both within the student body and with professors in the administration.
