Hey Scotty. My wife has a 2021 Tacoma V6. We leased it about a year ago. Took it to the dealer for the free oil change. They claimed it could go 10,000 miles between oil changes. After about 13,000 miles, and a so called oil change, the engine was very ticky and rough. I decided to change the oil and filter myself and the oil was super dirty, suggesting they never changed the oil. Now I noticed the exhaust has a lot of carbon and the engine is burning through a little oil. I can tell when the oil gets low by the sound of the engine. I will be doing the oil changes myself every 5,000 miles from now on. My question is, did the dealer screw up my truck by claiming they changed the oil but in reality it looks like they never did?
Man, that sounds annoying. The great news is it's a lease. As long as you have the receipt saying the oil was done, your lease agreement should be satisfied. Whether they actually performed the service is another story. Personally, if I had any questions (oil burning/odd noises) at the end of the lease, I'd hand it back over to toyota..
Local Toyota dealership told me i needed a whole new drive shaft they wanted to charge me $800 for plus labor. All i needed was a $20 U joint. I do all my own mechanic work now.
@@Kmclemore a loud hum the faster you go. You might be able to put truck in neutral and rotate drive shaft with your hands to notice any slack. Mine was obvious and you heard a clank.
On the impala, P1811 is usually fixed with a transgo kit, trans filter and fluid. $125 in parts and good to go. So typical. Seems this goof didn't know that.
Wait really? Have the same vehicle and it does the EXACT same thing the one in the video does, and it has the same code too. What exactly is a transgo kit?
I had a noise in my 97 jeep ( 174,800 miles ) when put in reverse when it was cold, it would last about 5 seconds then go away. It shifted fine except for that noise in reverse when it got colder outside. I added a can of Sea Foam Hydra Trans. Tune to it 16 oz. $15.00 at Auto Zone, I DON'T LIKE LUCAS PRODUCTS AT ALL. The noise went away in about 5 minutes & I was very impressed, used Sea Foam products before but not Trans. Tune. Then about 2 years later went to change my Trans. fluid & man it looked DARK, REAL DARK, NO RED AT ALL. It cleaned all the varnish & junk out of my Trans. as the can said it would. Changed fluid & filter & added another can of Trans. Tune, no more noise but the Jeep's SUB FRAME IS ROTTING IT'S WAY AROUND THE DRIVE TRAIN, THE RUST BELT SUCKS IN N.E. PA.
Scott, I bought a 1996 toyota corolla dx 1.8L I replaced all the motor mounts and radiator due to it sitting. What all should I do to make it more reliable and more power. It dose have 242k miles. Not sure all the repair history on it. It has a engine shake and squeals, even after all new engine Trans mounts( im assuming a pully, probably idle tensioner pully). It also has no power from a stop ( I seen a common problem with these is the distributor coil) planing on putting a new distributor (complete) and new struts around with a lift spacer 40mm (i am a tall guy lol) anything that should be replaced between the age or millage
On the 2nd car, the impala. Why didn’t you conclude that sensors could be the problem? When you bypass the computer and shift it yourself it shifts fine right? Well, a sensor could cause that problem right?
Great video Scotty I live in a country where we have right-hand drive vehicles I drive a ford ranger pk 2010 model and my transmission has giving up. It carries 5R55W/5R55S transmission what I want to know is are transmissions compatible either from left or right hand drive vehicles because I was told there may be differences.
Question - Im looking at buying a used 2008 Nissan xterra X Sport Utility 4D 4.0 V6 with automatic transmission. He is asking $7,500. Its a year with the smod radiator leaking into transmission destroying both issue. Mileage on it currently is around 97,000 miles. Seller im talking with just bought the xterra less than a year ago after his wife totaled one of their other cars so they bought the xterra to help them in their move from florida to california where they and i are now. They say they dont need the additional vehicle as they also have other. I asked if they or previous owner already replaced the radiator and / or transmission given the xterra being one of years nissan made the badly designed radiators that can leak into transmission and vise versa. He said he does not know if either were replaced, but he hasnt replaced either. But he proudly said paid the nissan mechanic dealership to do a radiator or transmission flush. Yet from what Ive read its actually recommended to not flush the transmission in these old of xterras as it can damage transmission. Full replacement of transmission fluids being the more recommended safer option. So given assuming its the original transmission and radiator, and dealership at least gave the xterra a transmission flush instead of replacement, and unknown previous maintenence and repair and issues history before he bought it last year, i am wondering if its likely its going to fail soon? Or if it can likely continue working good for many years without needintg to replace transmission and or radiator within just a few years? I test drove it briefly and didnt notice anything obviously slipping, stalling, etc. But I only drove it maybe 10 or 15 minutes and forgot to try out the additional low gear options. And if there is no leaking at this point between radiator and transmission ( and how do i know for sure ) is it safe for me to just replace radiator and do transmission and radiiator change of fluids ( not another flush )? And this will prevent transmission being damaged, and is it reasonable to expect these transmissions to then last at least another 1000,000 miles before needing replaced?
I know you say don’t rebuild transmissions in those old cars, but the new ones they are making now aren’t worth a crap, so I would at least be tempted to put a used tranny in the thing, after all it is an impala, and they made them pretty dependable, so why not keep her going.
Sound senor is the way to go. But they'll still deny it, not worth their time or money on a 20 year old car/truck where they can get 4x the repair fees in a new car with a careless owner. If the body, frame and engine is still good.. get the Trans fixed. Besides spending $3500 for the Trans or trying to find a not so AB"used" car via marketplace... Though people try to sell their junkers for $20000 now with the "I know what I have no low balls" clause. Or just bend over for that $20k markup on a $26,000 MSRP Ford Maverick.
Scotty! My truck turned 30 this year, and as a gift, the tranny is going! 93 F150 XL 3.9 I6. I love my old truck. But a couple weeks ago, I lost the ability to accelerate while on my way to work. Long story short, I have to start moving in 2, and when I get to about 40mph, I can kick it into D, but I have to make sure I press the pedal lightly, or the RPMs just shoot up and the thing won't accelerate. Occasionally it will work in D for a minute or so, but it eventually slips. Any recommendations?
Hi i watched your various video. I purchased honda civic 2004 it shows hard gear shifting sometimes but i checked transmission fluid but its okay and full what could be other problem ?
For the F150, that's likely shudder due to low and/or old ATF. I just bought a used F150 with 140k miles. It was doing that same thing, shuddering when going at highway speeds up a alight incline usually in overdrive. Likely the ATF and filter had never been changed as Ford doesn't recommend until 150k miles...stupid. Did a pan drop, drain, and fill with new filter and that shudder basically gone. And like this F150, no codes were being thrown. I'd ask that F150 owner when the last time that was done on it. Scotty didn't address that, but I'll guess not for a long time. Try that. Some Lubeguard Shudder Fixx wouldn't hurt anything either.
You can in that older F150. Mine's a 2015 and so newer than that. Probably the sane 6R80 transmission. Do a pan drop and drain and fill fluid with new and new filter and see that first. That's a few hundred bucks to have done or cheaper yourself. Then go from there. It's probably both low and dirty.
Took my car to amcco and they said my transmission needed rebuild. I hadn't noticed anything weird before they did anything to it. I was just getting a check up before driving across country. I wanted to make it without breakdown so I had the work done. After they rebuilt it, I noticed some weird things like having a hard time shifting on the freeway, hard time going up hill and started making a subtle but weird grinding noise it had never made before the repair. Took it to another amcco across the country and they said it looked weird(they banged it up alot trying to put it back together at the first amcco) but it was fine and functional. Now it is 16 months later so the warentee is over and now the car jumps when put in reverse. I think the second amcco knew something wasn't right 10 months ago but didn't want to do the work because they don't make much money off of warrentee work. It is a 97 toyota Rav4 with 150ooomi. Never had any breakdown or issue with it. I am learning to do my own work on it but I don't think transmission is a DIY job? What should I do? It's a great car but I don't want to spend another $5000 to get the transmission fixed again, the car isn't worth $10000. Runs fine for the most part but I don't want to ignore the small issues and have them turn into bigger problems.
You should have never accepted any work on it. You can check the atf levels make sure it's actually got the required fluid. After that your best bet is looking online for class action suits against the company unless you're willing to go back to the original shop that did the work. You would get another 100K out of that RAV4 though so if nothing else works try a new fluid change and then just get a remanufactured one from an experienced place
Emily Be carefull who you let work on your car . So many shops are run by dishonest mechanics and Service Reps . Try and find a good shop that other people recommend to you . Those places usually have a lot of business . And learn basic preventive maintainence like how to check your oil , brake fluid level , Coolant level , Power steering and Trans levels .

I think it would be worth as to fix it! Those engines go over 300000 miles!!!
I drove a car when I was logging and manually shifted it for 3 and a half years no problem ,thank God it was not Electric .
Scotty's the Man 👍
So what does it mean when my rpm is at 1 when in park ?
Have the same issue and came to the same conclusion. It’s my primary driver but it will only fail once
The video I needed
While I may not agree with everything you say, I sure do love these diagnosis videos! They are simple and down to Earth!
What were your symptoms? I think I need a new ujoint
@@Kmclemore a loud hum the faster you go. You might be able to put truck in neutral and rotate drive shaft with your hands to notice any slack. Mine was obvious and you heard a clank.
Scotty Kilmer school of mechanics Excelsior!
You da Man Scotty 👍
On the impala, P1811 is usually fixed with a transgo kit, trans filter and fluid. $125 in parts and good to go. So typical. Seems this goof didn't know that.
Wait really? Have the same vehicle and it does the EXACT same thing the one in the video does, and it has the same code too. What exactly is a transgo kit?
@@cdos9186 Transgo kit on my 2004 chevy venture. worth a try it worked for me
Never heard of a transgokit. Gotta look it up
My Ford Dealer declined to service my 2006 F-250, Limited Slip Differential clutches. They don't seem to like working on older vehicles.
That noise detector with 6 channels would be great to have for a motorhome(squeak, squeak, rattle, rattle,) lol
actually, I probably would rebuild the tranny in a free Impala from FL
You posted this video 2 weeks after my transmission exploded. I wish I had this video 2 weeks ago
Evening Scotty! 🏁
evening!
Scotty you are awesome
My vehicle is 18years old. My transmission still runs really well
Scotty, You make it look so easy. I so admire mechanics who "get the job done."
PA.
All those gizmos and gadgets he’s always got-it’s like diagnosing *paranormal activity* for cars! 🤣🤣🤣
I sure wish I could bring my cars to Scotty to be worked on
From the sound and the slippage I call it a cracked band.
Scotty make a video about valve covers and piston rings
will do!
has this video been reuploaded? feel like ive seen this video before
Video I needed 😂
Yea 🤣🤣🤣
Imagine living next to Scotty yelling about transmissions all day 🤣
Scott, I bought a 1996 toyota corolla dx 1.8L I replaced all the motor mounts and radiator due to it sitting.
Scotty done schooled me cars soo many times
On the 2nd car, the impala. Why didn’t you conclude that sensors could be the problem? When you bypass the computer and shift it yourself it shifts fine right? Well, a sensor could cause that problem right?
Great video Scotty
I live in a country where we have right-hand drive vehicles I drive a ford ranger pk 2010 model and my transmission has giving up. It carries 5R55W/5R55S transmission what I want to know is are transmissions compatible either from left or right hand drive vehicles because I was told there may be differences.
You are the funniest guy on the TH-cam!
I’d be honored to drive from Alaska to Tennessee to let Scotty reset my maintenance light😀
Sir .ur awesome you know to much an that's good for everyone 😉 thank uu very much for all ur videos just awesome sir 👏
This is why I only drive standard trasmission. Stupid automatics always go bad
I know you say don’t rebuild transmissions in those old cars, but the new ones they are making now aren’t worth a crap, so I would at least be tempted to put a used tranny in the thing, after all it is an impala, and they made them pretty dependable, so why not keep her going.
I would change the transmission module. It might be an issue with the module.
Imagine sitting down with Scotty and taking him out for the drive saying I Hurd it 😏 I Hurd it 😂
Sound senor is the way to go.
Shall we change pressure switch on the transmission?
Tightwad scotty says never do a transmission service.. just drive it til it blows up and buy a toyot next time🙄
@@keithbellair9508 😅
Yeah he should check the fluid just in case it's too late to change it but if.its.good then he should try doing an atf change
Those 3400 motors are bullet proof if you do your maintenance they are really simple motors
Scotty how is the transmission of the Ford Explorer with the 4-cylinder ecoboost engine
Thank God for Scotty
Sir ,please tell me can I use it on scion xb 2006 2004 2005 the Lucas thing 🙏
Scotty, need to talk about EV more. IEC is out.
LESSON FROM VIDEO: Not only Engines from FORD are bad but transmissions are WORSE
Case in point: AVOID ALL FORDS
Get TOYOTA 😎😎😎😎
Go to car care nut
Another "satisfied" Aamco customer.
