After watching the video, I have some thoughts:
The last portion of the video was what I was expecting the most.
Here’s a little story time. I grew up undiagnosed autistic, but extremely curious and observant to details. I started picking up on patrerns and learning how to navigate social stuff that way, cause I didn’t even understand my how feelings, but I could feel them and also notice those of others. Being surrounded by stuff we don’t understand is scary! So of course I did my research every day through every social interaction I had.
After some time, I could easily manipulate people, for better or for worse (mostly for self defense). And I hated that. I felt disgusting. I now had this skill that I wished I didn’t need to use to get through the day. I used it to get people off my back and leave me alone, and some days that meant being the worst person on the planet. At least thats how I felt, cause I know it sucks to feel upset and I didn’t want other people to be upset because of me.
As I learned emotional regulation later on, I stopped lashing out as much, my friends say I’m good at listening and comforting them, and I bleghed when my mom called me an empath. No, ma, I’m no magical, I’m mentally ill and I learned some stuff to survive.
Later on, this led to being misdiagnosed with NPD by a psychiatrist at a short term treatment program, who dismissed my autism (a WIP diagnosis at the time by my actual psychiatrist), which made me really upset and ruined my relationship with my family for a few months until my actual psych intervened. Having known me for much longer, she corrected the diagnosis and sat us down and just reiterated that I’m autistic and just happened to learn empathy really quickly as self defense, and since I have fairly severe CTPSD I was using it as just another survival mechanism, and she was proud of me for choosing not to hurt others with it.
Man, I could cry typing this. That article about the “black end if the spectrum of empathy and the colorful rainbow” or whatever almost enraged me, it’s stupid and ableist. Empaths as a mystical concept are ableist, empathy is just another human thing that can be bad or good depending on how you wield it. Like me, any “empath” could easily comfort a distressed friend or rip them apart, and I think it’s important that everyone uses their skills and knowledge wisely and carefully.
The human experience isn’t black and white, mostly everything about it has a double edge and the more we try to simplify things like this the easier it is to cause harm.
Thanks a lot for the video, it’s really appreciated ❤

Sharing your acknowledgement of feelings being different from others in the "how" you feel and the way you relate to feelings is so very important for you to understand and I am beyond grateful and impressed with your ability or understand not only your condition, but how understanding emotions through certain conditions may allow someone intelligent like yourself, can manipulate emotions or situations.
Very introspective and how this in combination with your misdiagnosis, led to and even larger understanding of the empathy and possible dark side of manipulation within and outside of any neurodivergent condition.
Just wow! Thank you for sharing. Beyond grateful ❤

First, I truly want to thank you for being so open in sharing your experiences, diagnosis, misdiagnosis and all sides of your part of understanding your own health journey.
I have worked in healthcare 20+ years, and far and few between are people as honest about their symptoms, ability to see that there may be a "dark" side, as well as understanding how all encompasses your experience that may lead to misdiagnosis.
We rarely get this open and honest account and know that you are helping so many come to an understanding, as well as, help push mental health research on social media to new levels. Thank you!

It's not that, I'm just OK with saying I am only empathetic to those I care for and really do not think of the rest.

I want to take the time to thank you for all you have done in mental health to explain these things. Some of these practitioners and therapists lean on what they see most. I do not think they realize they can be having cognitive dissonance. Makes sense if they are just NOW realizing ADHD and other types of autism they thought only affects boys, also affects girls but in a different way.
PMS symptoms is always used as a bad association with girls but hyperactive is seen as typical boy (good or ok to be). Crazy part is, the pms makes girls similar to hyperactivity seen in boys in adhd but girls are seen as bad or crazy or hormonal.
It really is interesting how people on social media can see empath as all great, just as doctors see hyperactive as great depending on who they are treating by sex. (Boys)
I know none of this may make sense to you, but your video has me thinking in so many great directions in how I can better help in mental healthcare. I am even more confident in being vocal now. Thank you young lady #WatchTimeViewers

The part about the rainbow had me dead. It is ruined for life.
People bring these website articles as proof to prove they are an empath to the therapist, followed by them identifying youtubers they say are amazing whom troll their audience and people who disagree with them.
The charts you use add a nice touch as a reference as well as the images used.
I am going to have to listen to the dark empath and sympathy and empathy comparison again as I found it fascinating.
Will comment later on the magical absorption of emotions and misconceptions. Great video Kurena ❤

    • @KurenaOfficial
      @KurenaOfficial  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Yeah, its really something that people shouldn't be so invested in. Plus, a therapist shouldn't need to see articles to believe someone is an Empath if they were so it's a waste of time regardless of if they are or not. Though often times, these articles don't even accurately depict it anyway.

@@KurenaOfficial I feel like people who self identify as empaths tend to lack self awareness of how they actually interact with others. They think they understand exactly how everyone around them feels and that it gives them some special insight, but its usually not the case and instead they end up invalidating other people or trying to get involved in things that don’t concern them. At least that was my experience and also what I’ve observed online too. The word often becomes some sort of license to give unsolicited opinions and to put themselves above other people.

This is my own personal opinion but I feel like because of the confusion people have with the definitions of sympathy and empathy they think those with autism or other neurodivergencies and disabilities are not capable of having empathy because we apparently don’t know how to feel emotions or give aid/comfort to people. But they’re not describing empathy like you stated, they’re describing sympathy and I’m pretty sure I can feel feelings even if my perception of them is different. I do admittedly have a harder time understanding other’s feelings since I process information differently but I try to make an effort to be able to understand things I may have a harder time experiencing. I think your definition of empathy not being rooted in having to experience the same things to understand something is also nice since everyone is going to have different perspectives and viewpoints.

this is fantastic. I immediately started making a SYMPath joke in my mind lol fuck I guess I'm both. I'm HSP and I've never identified as an empath despite being highly empathetic. because I respect individual validity and don't presume I'm right in my understanding of others even though I have excellent profiling skills 🙄 the risk is an arrogant one of invalidation. I am always careful to use the word sympathy when it's the right choice, even when my empathy is involved and it usually is. most people are lazy with language and I get it but it is a problem for all the reasons you're frustrated by.
btw, the pattern thing is actually a part of the HSP neurodivergence. it isn't just heightened sensitivity, although many people who are sensitized by trauma identify as HSP and/or empaths. most of them are neither as you've pointed out with the sympathy clarification. there is neurological research comparing HSPs with autism and people with PTSD. the brain patterns are actually different in a similar way to autism, but there's a heightened focus on interpersonal information like cues, behavioral patterns ... basically what you were saying about thin slice processing. that is being HSP. we are basically set up with supercharged mirroring (my name is even Mira 😹) and hyperfocus on patterns and details that make us useful socially as an evolutionary survival strategy. we're like insightful canaries in the coal mine for our social group. it's a high risk/high reward strategy that makes us more vulnerable to trauma in adverse conditions but better thrivers in good conditions. everything comes down to attunement since we're basically calibrated for it. it's all about that intersubjective field of intimacy, baby 😉 I made a meme of myself with "Mira is closer than she appears" captioned on my forehead like a tattoo because that's what it's like, for real. it's easy to get hurt when you're too close to people because you're deeply impacted by their issues and it's dangerous to navigate that kind of awareness. I've learned a lot of hard lessons in my life and engage in extensive research along my own personal healing journey. I have strict intellectual standards and like to continually evolve my perspective.
these people misuse HSP just like they do empath and that's what I'm telling you ❤ I'm really enjoying your video 😻 glad I stumbled on it❣️

Great take on the video. I did not understand that is many people misuse words especially empath but the sympath joke you intended to start with made me chuckle cause I had a similar thought.
I totally felt you in the arrogance and invalidation. Almost seems like when you are in part and empath or sympath, people are quick to say you aren't but THEY are. At least as of me getting on social media 😅
Great comment and glad I found this video too!

Hey, can you stop assuming that ads pop up because Kurena put an ad on it?
You DO know that TH-cam can use your video in a pop up ad to help creators?
Part of the new "hype" feature for smaller creators.
      Thanks 😊

Nice video as usual but instead of saying "If you know what that means" in regards to "overlap" you can explain it for the ones who don't know.
I would hate if you start to come across as a know-it-all and I hope that isn't the vibe you're going for especially with the kind of videos you do.

    • @KurenaOfficial
      @KurenaOfficial  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Yeah that's why I talked about it being an old recording. I pretty much had a community of trolls who were telling me I was stupid and didn't know what I was talking about and was wrong all the time. I thought they were average people watching. So it skewed how I responded to people. I try to not say things in that way now because I know I'm not at war with the comment section. But regardless, I think people should just figure if it doesn't apply, let it fly since some know and some don't. Even back then I'd talk about how none of us know everything.
I often do define things or show a statistic but I will miss stuff sometimes and similar to what you said, I know you're not trying to nitpick but strangers read these comments and make assumptions if context is not given. So I will continue to try and define/explain as much as possible but I'm sure I will miss things.

Hard to be perfectly objective when being attacked.
It is like telling a victim how they should have acted when they got stabbed on the street. It can come off as a little insensitive, I do get where you are coming from, however Kurena was speaking of how she communicated, while being attacked
