  • (Visit: www.uctv.tv/) Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is a mental-health treatment method for young children from 2-7 who engage in disruptive behaviors. The treatment has been proven effective in more than 100 different research studies. Anthony Urquiza, Director of the UC Davis Child and Adolescent Abuse, Resource, Evaluation (CAARE) Diagnostic and Treatment Center, and staff developed a model for training therapists to achieve competency in both PCIT and training other therapists at their respective agencies. Evaluations of this model showed that the therapists who received the training were able to achieve the same positive outcomes when using PCIT, and their agencies were able to sustain effective programs over time. When he said you have to get the parents to like their child! That is so true. Of course parents love their children. But not being annoyed by them all the time and enjoying their company is totally different.

How do you find someone who teaches this? My son has ASD and I think this would be extremely helpful

Call 211 and ask for mental health services for children.

Not funny...comment that PCIT is not a birth control implying she should not bear more children. What message does that communicate about these clients? They are not animals needing to be trained. They are humans who have learned a different way of child rearing and are choosing to enter your treatment in order to better her connect with her children. There are many people who abuse their children, but due to racial profiling and wealth, do not end up targeted or reported to the child protective service system. Secondly, your video displays a clinician instructing Tammy to talk about her younger child to her older child. That is teaching dysfunctional bad mouthing in order to shame the younger child to behave in order to gain acceptance. She should've been instructed to simply ignore the unwanted behavior and give attention to the older child without bad mouthing others. It does not teach either child how to respect and be polite of others having issues regulating their emotions.
