  • Tried-and-true parenting advice doesn’t work, and neither do strangers’ disapproving looks. What actually works for families living with ADHD-related challenges? Behavioral parent training (BPT), a well-studied and well-established first-line treatment plan for children with ADHD with results to match its expert pedigree.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that doctors prescribe behavior therapy before medicine for preschoolers with ADHD. For older children, the AAP recommends using BPT alongside stimulant medication for the best results. Here, Carla Counts Allan, Ph.D., explains how behavioral parent training can solve discipline challenges in your home.

Thank you so much, Dr. Allan. As an LPC and as a mother, spouse and daughter-in-law to those with ADHD, I so appreciated this information. Especially the compassionate focus on helping the parents emotionally. Acknowledging how hard it is to parent with these challenges was an encouragement to my soul. Thank you for this wonderful information. :-)

It is so, so difficult to provide the structure and consistency that ADHD kids need when one or both parents have ADHD and/or mental illnesses themselves.

Question about how this Parent Training translate to school? We just got a 504 Plan that articulates how the teacher will use specific strategies that we are using at home.

You can advocate for how your child is treated at school. Just as you learn not to be harsh at home and to use more positive reinforcement , those employed by the school must exercise self control when they perceive your child is being difficult. You can let the teacher know what you are learning about what helps your child with executive function and emotional regulation skills.
