Hey TH-cam! We are Guys With Games ESL/EAL Activities.
We share new games every week for you to use in the ESL classroom. Our focus is teaching English in a fun way and sharing games that deliberately make English the main entree, not just a side dish.
    Today’s Game:
In today’s video, Dustin (Canada) teaches us how to play a fun and engaging game for your ESL Students focused on reviewing vocabulary. It can be used to practice both individual comprehension and teamwork.
    Name of the game:
    Honeycomb
    Materials:
Short definitions of vocabulary words (prepared in advance)
    Black/whiteboard
This vocabulary-based game uses a hexagonal grid, which resembles a honeycomb. It's very much like the early 1990s tv gameshow called Blockbusters, but targets a specific set of vocabulary that can be tailored to the class/level.
    Ideal class size:
    2-20 Students
    Instructions:
Prep by writing out the alphabet, and then finding a word that your students should know which begins with each letter. Dustin likes to make his grid 5*5 which means one letter (usually 'x') can be excluded. However, the game could be played on a 4*4 grid, or with repeating letters (E1 and E2, for example).
Start the game by dividing the class into two teams. Choose one student from each team to stand up and rock, paper, scissor for the right to choose the letter. The winning student chooses a letter. The teacher will give an English definition for a target word that begins with the chosen letter. At this point, either of the two standing students can answer. If neither student is able to find the correct answer, it's opened up to anyone on either side. Once one team correctly answers, the hexagon is filled in with their team color. New students are then chosen to pick the next letter and have the first guess. They go on until one team is able to connect top-to-bottom (orange) or left-to-right (green).

Thanks for the comment. To shorten the length of the activity, you could try using a smaller grid. It could be played the same way on a 4*4 or even 3*3 format.
