Great talk. I'm a registered nurse. New to seventh day adventist church and I'm enrolled to study psychology this year. I got told psychology is mind controll.
The problem with Adventists isn’t just that they ignore psychology, they also fail at being being supportive in any way. You can’t have a therapist but not allowed to go to anybody in the church when met with really deep problems. I was alone because of the SDA church, I was alone and rejected from day 1 but I had no choice and they knew this.

You can have Jesus and a therapist too. I am studying psychology as we speak, and it (like the study of the body) is simply the study of the mind. What are you so threatened by? Its not either/or which your western lens has taught you and it is not grounded in the narrative of scripture (thought texts can be found to support any person's position, this or that). Here are a few texts that may help balance out this conversation. I wish you well and abundant peace in Messiah.

This is actually very helpful, but I'd like to respectfully suggest that you change the title. "EGW & Psychology: What went wrong, and why it matters" seems to be understood by many as referring to Ellen herself instead of the SDA stance of psychology - as if she became psychologically unbalanced or the like (though far from truth). She and her promoter husband James became wealthy selling books and charts and even sewing patterns to sew the reformed dress which Ellen pontificated was essential for spiritual and physical health. You are ignorant and a deluded fool. Ellen White was a psychological train wreck. She wanted to die as a young girl but she was extremely afraid she was lost and doomed. Her unbiblical horrific view of the character of God produced a horrendous doctrine of probation for redeemed saints and an exacting examination of character to determine if the person on probation is worthy of heaven. It’s not grace and it’s not Church. No healthy person comes up her view of God the father. Search Steve Daily and his new psycho biography of Ellen White. The White estate was hacked with the help of an insider. The nasty secrets have been exposed. Ellen’s own words indict her as a mean vindictive woman. She was a liar and a thief. Healthy people don’t proclaim they visited heaven and observed angels entering heaven with golden key passes. Ellen was very disturbed. Inconsolable for months after the great disappointment. She hated her life. Wanted desperately to leave earth. Adventists are religious freaks. Adventists are not Christians.
Folks in Loma Linda are the longest living folks in the nation, because they eat and carry on with healthy habits. I also read somewhere that Ellen G. White said that “We are no one to judge a person that commits suicide. She said that only God knows who gets saved or not. He sees the heart and he is very merciful so we can not judge & say that someone that commits suicide won’t be saved. We don’t know if at the last minute that person repented & cried out to God. Remember science now has discovered that even when someone gets shot in the head, their brain is still active for a few seconds & that shows right there how merciful God is up until the last seconds of your life he gives you clarity & time to repent. For us our loved ones are dead but for God, we are sleeping because he is the only one that can bring them back to life.
Ellen delighted in judging everyone. Her entire life was about judgement. Here’s one of many despicable statements:” God can not love naughty children.” Ellen was mean and vindictive. She lied and proclaimed God had spoken to her about one of her many critics, and she would then destroy the person in public with lies she said came direct from God. You are living in a fantasy world in a demonic cult. You are not saved.
Many Adventists experience serious health issues. Adventists use their health evangelism to capture naive innocents into their heretical demonic cult. Adventists are not saved.
Buddhists live just as long. Adventists living a long time gives them more time to capture naive innocents into their demonic cult.
Meanwhile she judges other christians who don’t follow HER version of Christianity while also telling young members (like myself when I was a child) not to affiliate with people outside the church even if it’s family. This doctrine created division among family and relatives that shouldn’t have ever been there, and the adventist members I knew growing up don’t give a crap about anything.
I don’t think the brain being active for few seconds following a gunshot really means anything… they may still be alive for few seconds but I doubt they can think in that time.

Where in scripture is the health reform msg? Ah, that’s right, it’s not. Ever study Romans 14? Why were the vegetarians the weaker in faith? If diet is health reform, how come Paul, who did receive the gospel from Jesus, not know about it? The kingdom of God is NOT a matter of eating and drinking but love joy and peace in the Holy Spirit. Did God not give you flesh to eat? Gen 9:3 so where in the Bible is the call, teaching or even suggestion to take a fallen world of sin and restore Eden and the diet? It’s not. When will things be restored? After the second coming. Now she claims and Angel told her. What does Paul say about that in Galatians 1:8? Did Paul or Jesus teach to abstain from flesh or that it’s health reform? No so where did that Angel come from? Not from God. How so? 1 Timothy 4 tells you. Who teaches to not marry outside Adventism? EGW, did she not counsel a woman to leave her non SDA husband? Who predicted Jesus’s return in 1850? EGW who said slavery would still be practiced when Jesus returns? EGW What does scripture teach us about the validity of a prophet? They must be 100% accurate or we are to stone them to death. EGW is a fraud and is covered up by the billion dollar a year revenue of the NAD not to mention the world church and its revenue. Adventists look to EGW in the same manner as Israel did to Moses, yet Moses wasn’t a fraud. EGW was an avid reader and she has entire sentences in her writings that come from other sources, in which she doesn’t quote, and yet she knew how to quote and did occasionally quote. The Bible warns us of following false prophets. There were major/minor prophets in the Old Testament and after Jesus the only prophesying is from sons and daughters proclaiming the return of Jesus. EGW is the god of Adventists and no matter what SDA say, they place her above scripture and above God…EGW says etc etc but scripture is the only authority. They perish because they loved not the truth of God’s word.

Analyze this for a moment, if Ellen was shown the future and her writing is a message to bring awareness for what's about to come, then we must be careful just to give them a just contemporary of her time interpretation.. If the transcending of time aspect of her writings is not accepted, in essence, will undermine all of her writings, for it is its most important factor.
The first question should be, how does he considers her writings.. and this is pretty much answered by his first paragraph on the slide at the 8:06 minute.
He seems to agree with the fact that all of the founding fathers of these concepts seem to support a particular point of view on religion.
Last, he's pretty excited about the potential development of the Biopsychosocial spiritual model, but look at the bottom right corner of the slide on minute 32:45.. Higher level of consciousness as part of the spiritual model, which should be a warning.
To my amazement, there's a tendency to think that the founders did not fully think through their philosophies, that their atheist ideals are foreign to their concepts, and somehow expect different conclusions though following their train of thoughts.

As a direct decendent of one of the founders I can no longer believe in the S.D.A. church! Why? Because they don't practice what they preach!? Adventists believe more in sister Whites writings then the Bible!? I have sat in the church (as a kid) and counted the references to the Bible verses sister Whites! E.G. White usually won! I now believe, as an old man that Ms White was nothing more then a brilliant scam artist for her own good!

Adventists are, as a rule, unprepared to meet the psychological requirements of our current generation whos mental health is rapidly degenerating, and our narrow minded stupidity means that millions are left to languish without help or to seek it from psychologists with stupid philosophies that they artificially inject into their practices.
Wrong is defined by the word of God Christ is righteous or is the only one who can say what is right. The Seventh-day Adventist church has different members so to say we as a whole believe what you claim is erroneous.

Your second sentence is also irrelevant since I did not say all Adventists. I said as a rule and as such exceptions are implied, but since you cannot even carefully read a simple comment and respond appropriately to what I actually said, then clearly you are no exception to the rule and would be a frustration to someone who needed you to actually listen to their needs and respond accordingly.
