    Well that was a weird sight seeing a zero and a hellcat flying side by side.
    I wish I could go to one of these kinds of airshows.

      Navy pilot Campbell obtained 9 kills in a single air combat against Japanese fighters during the battle of Leyte. He would have got more, but ran low on fuel, and was out of ammunition. His wingman got five. The Japanese pilots at the time where green, due to attrition of losing their best pilots over several years.

    Definitely. Many of those late war Hellcat pilots never even scored a kill. But the Grumman "Ironworks" produced a solid aircraft and no doubt it saved lives. Armor is heavy and every pound you add to the aircraft cuts the performance, but Grumman and the US Navy were willing to make that tradeoff and it worked. A shot-up plane can be patched and repaired, a pile of scrap at the bottom of the pacific cannot. After the war Hellcats were used as remote controlled drones for air gunnery practice!

    yeah true, for different reasons though. The hellcat just brute forced its way to high alt since the engine was considerably better than the common zero,the hellcat is far heavier than the zero though, while the zero had a weak engine (lets be honest here) but was incredibly light, so if it was climbing it was more of a float upwards.

    Now the Hellcat is the better fighter as it can dive away if in danger and take some punishment. But it cant dogfight a Zero. It has to climb higher and faster then make diving attacks. In this situation, low and slow, the Zero would never be in any danger.

    It's true that the F6F Hellcat outclassed the A6M Zero, but remember the F6F was specifically designed with the Zero in mind. When the US first entered the war, they were using the previous F4F Wildcat, which was a far inferior fighter to the Zero. As with many things during the Pacific War, the Japanese were way ahead of their time at the beginning of the war, but the US was better able to exploit their industry to develop better (and more) technology by the later years.

  • @picardtseng

    Don't know whether it's possible to see Zero in IWM Duxford airshow. Only 4 flyable Zeros on earth, while you can easily see a great formation of one or two dozens Spitfires in Duxford show.

  • @picardtseng
    @picardtseng 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    F-6F is able to prevail or at least match to Zero in almost every tactical situations. Comparing Zero, F-6F is faster in level flight, accelerating, diving, climbing. Usually Zero take tremendous advantage in mid/low speed maneuvering, but this was dramatically shrinkage with F-6F (especially F-6F5). Some Japanese pilots such as Sakai Saburō confirmed that Hellcat could trun with Zero --- For older American fighters such as F-2 or F-4, within 2 circles they ended up with finding Zero at their six.
    All newer American fighter such as P-47/F-4U/F-6F/P-38 took advantage from their superior energy (speed/high altitude performance) to suppress Zeros, no need to dog fight with them.
    The exchange ratio between Hellcats and Zeros is approximately 1 to 13(F-4U Corsair scored even higher). The appearance of Hellcats in 1943 really change the tide of the Pacific air battles.

  • @Quetzalcoatl_Feathered_Serpent
    @Quetzalcoatl_Feathered_Serpent 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Hellcats indeed used brute force then the lighter zero, however the Hellcat was maneuverable in the climb and could turn a bit better due to being such a heavily built fighter. it could take the high g stress. the Zero well a excellent dogfighter fighter was such a light skin craft high stress at high speeds or extremely sharp turns can indeed tear the poor craft apart. Also most of the Japanese ace pilots died during midway what was left was a cross between decent pilots and complete nuggets. the Empire had a serious issue about bringing seasoned vets back home to train the next generation, better they died in glory of the empire then surrender or head home.

  • @briancha7741

    no it is true. the zero is more maneuverable. flight leads told all of their squad mates that dogfighting with the japanese fighters was suicide. either the zero didnt see the hellcat on their tail or it dove on them incredibly fast, etc.. the reason zeros often lost to hellcats was due to the speed advantage

    THAT is why the hellcats tore the zeros apart (besides of course the zeros not having armor and not having self sealing tanks) not cause the hellcat was so superior. I encourage you to read Samurai by Saburo Sakai and read about an ace pilot in an old past its prime zero evading at least half a dozen Hellcats late in the war. The late war hellcat pilots were not all aces. The difference was, if they made a mistake, their armor could give them a 2nd chance, the zeros just burst into flames...

      @greenseaships 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would have said the same thing a while back, but I discovered that they did not eliminate the little windows right at the moment when the -5 began. In fact, many -5 Hellcats left Beth Page with that extra window before they eliminated them. That said, even if this is a -5, I'd still have preferred they paint it in good old 3-tone blue/white. Collings Foundation IS working on getting a -3 back in the air right now. IIRC it's actually an F6F-3N with the radar pod on the wing.

Russian tanks are hard to kill. Russian planes are hard to kill. Germany (which had the best technology in WW2) is pretty much degraded to a patatoe. And America. According to WARTHUNDER American planes were lightly armored and japanese Armor was "strong". Also have fun getting KO'd from above in your tanks by a ka-52.

    グラマン・ヘルキャットは30機も撃墜してるじゃないか。まぁアメリカンジョークだろうけど。日本でのショーならゼロ戦には60個位撃墜マークつけてやりたいなー。アメリカのショーだからしょうがないね。

    Certainly, the Hellcat is one of the uglyest fuselage shaped plane of the WWII, besides the Wildcat, Tigercat, Brewster Buffalo and the P-47, perhaps due to acomplish their crescent search for performance, adopting even more (large and heavy) engine power, to compensate poor aerodynamics (!),, another example is the soviet LA-5 and LA-7, by the same adopted solutions...

      The Hellcat is a damn good looking plane! One of the best looking planes of WWII. Radial engine was a success for good reason!

      The Hellcat is one of the best looking planes from it's best views, which is most of them. A little known fact is that the F6F Hellcat is in some important respects the largest single engine fighter of the war, yes, even over the P-47 Thunderbolt. It can take on a bit of a broadside look from close up. When you really study the length of that fuselage spine, with those great lines and the tail feathers it checks out as having classically good looking shapes and proportions. Tell Steve at Chino, we think the Hellcat should always be counted as one the more glamorous and nostalgic fighters of the 1940's!
