Flying Heritage Collection test flew their newly restored Grumman F6F-5N for the very first time on Wednesday, March 27th, 2013 with Steve Hinton at the controls. The Hellcat is their latest addition to the collection and will be flying for the 2013 season here at Paine Field in Everett, Washington.
I love the looks of the F6F Hellcat! Those lines, the certain viewing angles, ranks amongst the very top with me. Tell Steve H. we thank him for flying these planes, and that many of us believe the Hellcat should always be "counted amongst the more Glamorous and Nostalgic Fighters of the 1940's"!

SAME!! Something to be said for those Navy Warbirds for sure! Love all of them, but the US Naval planes of WWII have always had a special place in my heart!

kindness and sacrifice is responsible for the best parts of me. As for me, well, I’ll go to my final reward
hoping that my children and grandchildren will know that when they spot those
white tail stripes in some old movie or news reel, that that was the Randolph, CV-15,
a proud fleet carrier and “Papa Fred’s” ship.
I pray that Dad’s legacy and that of thousands like him, will live on in
memory for generations to come.

Zero pilots got a rude awakening when the Hellcat showed up. No doubt, many of them thought they were Wildcats and that the pilots were green newbies who didn't know any better than to follow them up into a steep climb. But it didn't end well for the Zero pilots. Instead lining up an easy kill on a stalled Wildcat fluttering like a duck, the last thing they saw before they were vaporized was the flash of the Hellcat's 50 cal's, courtesy of its 2,000 HP double wasp engine.

@@thecircusfreak5364 That is the EXACT word used by MANY WW2 U.S. fighter pilots to describe what one or two rounds would do to Japanese aircraft. In order to give their fighters more range and maneuverability, Japan scrimped on armor plating and passed on self sealing fuel tanks. The consequences were disastrous. One well placed machine gun burst and just about any Japanese fighter would explode. That was not the case with Allied fighters nor with German fighters either. They had better armor plating.

The Hellcat was just the right fighter at just the right time for the U.S. Navy in the Pacific. While the F4U Corsair was way faster, it took some time for the Navy to sort out some of its issues for carrier op's. The F6F was PERFECT for carrier op's. Faster than the Wildcat but much easier to handle than the F4U, it was well suited to green rookie pilots. It had a shorter nose than the F4U with a slight slope giving the pilot far better visibility and also had a much slower stall speed than the Corsair. Those two factors alone made it way easier to manage for carrier landings than the F4U. It was more than a match for the much vaunted A6M Zero as reflected in its kill ratio and why it is commony called the "Zero Killer". Near the end of the war, the F4U came into its own for carrier op's because by then the Navy had figured out how to train pilots to manage its quirky issues for carrier landings. By then, the Corsair's superior speed and rate of climb made it a better option than the F6F to extend the zone of protection around the fleet from the kamakaze threat.
Dont forget that the Hellcat was alot less vulnerable to enemy fire than the F4U, due to the Corsair's oil cooler placement.

There's nothing "automatic" on those old workhorses, spark advance, engine cooling all has to be done by the pilot. You would have to be pretty good to fly one of these bad boys!

I can only imagine the astonishment of the Japanese pilots when these planes first flew in combat, thinking they were an F4F and would be an easy kill and learning the hard way, they weren't.

Wonder why Grumman didn't put a four bladed prop on the F6F, like just about every other plane with the R2800 had?
Mainly because of engine config. The corsair started with a 3 and ended up with a 4 in later more powerful models. The cat didn't need it until the bearcat was built. It started with a 4.
This sound is amazing - They added this Skin in warthunder... if only the engine sounded like that and the 50 cal API would do as much damage as the german armaments

My Dad flew these in the Pacific, he said they were a very stable gun platform. Grumman Ironworks! He flew them off small aircraft carriers, not the big ones, bobbing corks on the water, not easy to put a plane down on one of those. In my family the Bombs on Japan were a good thing, not something to apologize for as Obama just did.
To go to Japan this close to Memorial Day was a disgrace! Those people were sadistic butchers and deserved all they got in return.
You are referring to the Japanese people of that period and not the ones today, right? If so, I totally agree. The Japanese back then were psychotic and completely different from today's Japanese.
The deliberate bombing of civilians and certain protected cultural landmarks is explicitly forbidden by internatrional law, including laws that existed during WWII. The United States sponsored draft rules for aerial warfare in the 1930's that explicitly forbade the bombing of civilians or basically anything that is not crucial to the war effort. When the Germans bombed English cities, it was condemned by the Americans as a savage act, but the Americans and British turned around did the same. A surrender from Germany or Japan could have been much more easily obtained if the Allies had not made such unreasonable demands and been unwilling to negociate.
What has basically been created is a two tier system. The rules are just another weapon to be used against the enemy. If America ever picks a fight with someone who can fight back, and bombs (or missiles) rain on American cities, all the people who talk about how justifiable it was to bomb Japanese and German cities will be the ones citing international law, verbatim, and calling it a crime against humanity. I hope that never happens, but with how the crazies in power are constantly agitating for war, only God can restrain them!
RandomActivities I don't think you understand. Once the military facilities were destroyed and Japan didn't surrender, we had to take it to the next level to end the war. If we just stopped and let them rebuild, the war would carry on and more people would die

No, I don't believe so. There were many American casualties due to malaria but most were successfully treated.
An aircraft is like a woman. she needs flaws to be truly beautiful. That is why the Bearcat is not as popular. It is too beautiful. It is perfect. The Hellcat and the Corsair, on the other hand, are flawed and loved.
