I worked in the electrical utility trade for 31 years and proudly worked with some of the hardest working people I know. I’ve helped in training apprentices that thought they could show up a fifty year old man with ease. Hopefully the ones that turned out after four years would actually begin there careers in the trades. I was also fortunate enough to invest my overtime and raises. I retired at the age of 57. This wasn’t handed to me.. i worked storms and overtime in excess of 16 hour shifts for more than a week straight. Mikes story really just scratches the surface but I’m indebted to him for making the trades and dirty jobs something to have pride in.
Tax payers pay it all. Our Fore Fathers warned us about becoming debt slaves but here we are! Thomas Jefferson said he considered “public debt as the greatest of the dangers to be feared,” and he warned that in order to preserve the people's independence, “we must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt.” He also talked about the urgency of paying off debts, saying it would help preserve peace.
It's the lazy & idiotic (and self entitled) millenials who want all their educational debt cancelled. Ok, so what about all of the people who paid their way with student loans for the past 50 years ? Why just the millenials & Gen Z ?
You are right about taxpayers paying it off but not us. We will not pay off all our debt in our lifetime. Future taxpayers including the kids whose loans are forgiven will pay at least interest on it.
@@kennybeck5519 , just so you know, you have to qualify for loan forgiveness. There’s only a few ways to do it. One is if you have signed up for loan forgiveness based on your work for a nonprofit organization for 10 years. That means you have worked for a non-profit (including the military) and have paid your loans for 10 years. Then you can apply to get the balance forgiven. The other option is to apply for loan forgiveness after you have paid your loans for your undergraduate degree for 20 years. A third way is to apply for loan forgiveness for your graduate degree after you have paid your loans for 25 years.
The government takes just as much advantage. They profit even more in fact. Student loans are 4 times as much of an asset for the federal government as taxes. They rip off the hardest working Americans with degrees while simultaneously forgiving low life’s loans to buy votes. Any attempt Biden has made to fix it was really a purchase of low income voters votes. Meanwhile student loans keep on the same, currently charging children 6.5% daily accruing interest. Starting before they even step foot in a classroom.
I do supermarket refrigeration…most people have no idea we even exist but we work 24/7, away from our families, exhausted sometimes up for 24+ hours straight, to make sure the systems that cool/freeze all the food are working properly so you can walk into any supermarket and count on cold/frozen foods that are safe and quality to eat when you need them. We are often out on the hottest/coldest/rainiest days with Gauges/electrical meters/torches repairing things behind the scenes. Occasionally an older person will say to me thank you for what you do when they see me working and it really means a lot.
Thank you for working this service job. My Dad worked for the city water department. I remember him working weekends and even holidays. I remember one Christmas where a major water main broke and he had to go to work. Nobody thanked him or the rest of the crew.
That’s really cool! (No pun intended) I’ve always found that field interesting. There’s no way I could do those kinds of hours now but I told my ac guy, he has his own company that was his dad’s, I told him I’d totally go on service calls with him, not wanting to be paid a single dime, but just to watch, hand him tools, gauges etc, and see and learn what they do and how it works and why it works.

Bring back bankruptcy rights! Gamblers and business owners shouldn't be able to wipe out their debts while some student loan borrowers are stuck in a lifetime of indentured servitude.
@@interestedparty3125not saying I disagree with you. What would stop people from abusing that. The strategy could easily be: Take out massive student loans. Graduate and file bankruptcy. Wait for credit to clear up (I think it’s 4 years.. not positive). That’s almost the same thing as forgiveness, just with a time penalty to re enter the financial debit system.
@@cjorgie1 The concern about abuse of the bankruptcy process is legitimate. However, the courts have instituted term requirements for repayment (5 years under a chapter 13 plan). Reforms could be as follow: 1) Any federal loans would be limited to the historical rate of education inflation from 1965-present, and granted priority unsecured status (and cannot be discharged under bankruptcy for a period of 20 years); the government would be paid first ahead of any creditors or private lenders. 2) Colleges and universities would act as guarantor of a proportion of the federal (and all private) student loans taken out by students, meaning they would be on the hook to the government and private lenders in the event of default. They would use a portion of their endowment funds to act as collateral, similar to how banks have reserve ratios as a part of their stress-tests. 3) Historical black colleges and universities offering courses for underserved students and those with lower GPA should be offered some financial protections to ensure they could continue operating and offer viable classes to help students enter the job market. 4) Students would have to pay back a portion of their gross income for a minimum period of 20 years, but the remainder would be dischargeable after. This would strike a fair balance; the market would self-regulate as lenders would not be willing to extend credit to education institutions who do not offer fair value for a worthwhile degree; we do not keep borrowers as indentured servants and tied to the federal government for a lifetime of welfare, and education costs would come down as a result of the risks to creditors from debtors filing for bankruptcy protection. The only problem is that both parties would oppose reform as it goes against their special interests (Wall Street/lenders/private banks, Education).
My question is, why are you denigrating garbage in such an unfair way? Comparing anything with the dipsh*t in charge of NOTHING aka China Joe's administration is making that thing worth less than 💩. #FJB
It’s not just the current administration. Its rich people getting richer, mass poisoning poor people via the chemicals in their products and cost of their products.
My wife and I didn't go to college after High School. We went to work. We met when I was 19 and she was 17. That was in 1973. We were married 2 years later. We are still together. I have never paid a dime in rent for a place to live. I purchased our first house when I was 20. We raised two children who both graduated from college with honors. We are both retired now and for the first time in our lives we are paying rent. Not for a place to live, but for a place to store our 35 foot travel trailer when we are not using it. Success comes in many forms. Success is not dependent on a College Degree unless your chosen field of work requires it.
Just like the middle class has been doing in this country for more then 60 years while large corporations get tax breaks and subsidies while the middle class can’t afford to put food on the table for there families there is no difference between student loan forgiveness then trillions of dollars of tax breaks for large corporations

Nothing is free, get whatever job you can get(2 or 3) if necessary. Stop expecting everyone else to pay for your education. You are selfish. Nothing is free😂😂😂😂😂
My folks died before my 10th birthday. I worked during high school, college and graduated paying all my expenses and tuition. Earning one’s way through life is the only way that works. Keeping one eye on the current day and the other 15 years down the road adjusting constantly puts one in the best place to experience a productive and happy life. Success is determined by one’s objectives in life!
My parents died when I was six. I clean toilets ( for $1/ hr) worked construction, drove delivery truck etc and never asked tax payer to support me. If I can do it so can others.

College loans can be used for anything, and with decent credit you can get numerous student loans. This may be the issue - people getting lots of loans under the student loan programs and these loans are not all used for schools. They are used for anything they want - partying/clothes/fun.
Yep, you got that right. I worked as a court clerk for 13 years. Had one young man before the judge for some sort of offense to which he pled guilty. Judge levied a fine and told him to have it paid by such-and-such date, but followed up by asking if having it paid by the due date would be a problem (Judge came up the hard way... he had a heart). The young man told Judge, "Naw, I'll have my student loan by that time." Loan forgiveness? SHEESH!
Who pays for student loan forgiveness? The young man that decided at 18 that instead of partying he woukd serve his country. He would go to overseas and see none of his family or friends over a year. He would loose a close friend there. He went airborne to become a better soldier. This resulted in a bad jump where he fell 800ft and broke his back. At 46 he can barely walk or work. Hes been fighting for Disability over 13 years and getting nothing for his sacrifice. He cant pay his bills and will be homeless soon.........ME! I AM THAT SOLDIER AND IM PAYING FOR YOUR "EDUCATION"!!!😢 let that sink in

And what about the people who couldn’t afford to go to college in the first place and have to work low income jobs? How is to morally right to make him pay for an education for someone else that they will never see a benefit for?

However it doesn’t matter if it’s metal framing or wood framing, other trades can’t come in until we’re done! So Mike please mention a carpenter at some point! But only the carpenter can frame an finish!
My granny is 89, lives across the country, an immigrant from communist Europe c. 1960. Obviously, I have her among others to thank for my existence. We talk weekly and she loves Mike Rowe and Dr Phil. Values that have been lost amongst the screens, social media and materialism shoved down our collective throats. Just a different perspective…
I went to career day elementary school for my daughters. Teacher said in her presentation that u kids dont eant to work at jobs that r physical. U need to go to college. I laughed. that was 28 years ago.
What Mike Rowe described as to his approach for filming, that’s what Anthony Bourdain did. And both did it with humility and respect for those whom they filmed. And there are millions of potential stories waiting to be told ….. and they don’t have to involve Hollywood celebrities.
I was jogging today in really hot weather, and after a hurricane, Houston looks like a war zone in parts with fallen trees everywhere. These workers who didn't speak English, were doing really hard looking work in really hard weather, but they were laughing and telling jokes I didn't understand due to language. It made the rest of my run seem easier knowing people are out working, and a million of my neighbors don't have power. My grand mothers prayers are still working.
Mike I am a union electrician and I went to a trade school class of 01 what can I do to help this cause I believe 100 percent what you are saying about the trades
I mean, College is a good thing. But the Federal Government started subsiding colleges through student loans. All this did was hike credit prices, inflate administrative positions, and create dumb and pointless degrees that attract people who largely shouldn't be in college (I'm looking at you..."Studies" degrees). But College is good. It should be cheaper and affordable. The Federal Government shouldn't take tax dollars to forgive loans. They should take that massive Education department budget, shut down the department and use those funds to pay off the loans they conned 18 year olds into getting. Then....force universities to figure it out on their own.
mike rowe is the new gold standard for leading the new generation that collage and 20 year student loan debt is not for everyone we need vocational schools schools schools
What that guy said about the f150 and f250 pickup truck that a contractor needs as a tool isn't being forgiven. That's not true it is. I get to write off most all the miles I put on my truck. It's oil changes it tires and most all of the cost if it breaks down. Plus I get to deduct its depreciation over the years. So it might not get totally wiped out. But a large chunk of it does. So maybe instead of total forgiveness on school loans. Maybe say half or 3/4 can be deducted from your taxes. Much like that truck he says he get no deduction for.
The real problem, besides the ridiculous costs of college, are the adults who should be properly guiding teens in this world. Adults from every part of their lives push teens into the narrative that college is the only way to go after highschool. Teens don't understand how the world works. Teens don't understand how much debt they are diving into head first. They don't understand what interest is going to do to that cost and how long it's going to take to pay off. They don't understand how that's going to make getting things like cars and houses even harder. I don't think loans should just be forgiven because that won't solve anything long term. Adults need to properly prepare teens and help them to understand the massive commitment they will be taking on. And let them know it's ok to not go to college, there are other avenues and taking time off between highschool and making a decision is ok too. As long as you work hard in life it doesn't matter what you do.
I am a retired above ground miner. I saw a man, around my age with a union jacket on in Costco, OE12. I said to him, hi brother, retired OE3 member here. Our wives had to drag us away so they could shop, LOL. Working people, skilled labor are not the same as management. We view hard work as honorable. We believe in fairness, treating others right and being treated fair.
Mike. You did a great thing with dirty jobs. You have gave the hard working men and women of America a voice who work the long hours doing the jobs no one else wants to do to give us the lifestyle we take for granted. Thank you Mike and thank you blue color workers.
Well, first, the people who went to college and paid THEIR loans back. Then, there's the people who chose NOT to go to college who get to pay for those idiots who aren't smart or honorable enough to pay off their own loans. There's also the people themselves who will pay via higher taxes (although they do come out ahead here).
I just watched the show today where you interviewed students and professionals that have bypassed the system with their loans in different ways. I agree that students are victims in this, but so our parents like myself. I feel like my daughter is made to feel like she couldn’t go to school if I didn’t sign for balloons. Here I am close to retirement still dealing with her student loans. It is a very frustrating process. I also worked at asmall college. I have since 12 years ago run into several of my former students who are still trying to find that job that supposedly is going to pay them $20 an hour. Very disheartening! And yes, this administration made lots of promises that they didn’t keep nor could they keep.
If they want to fix student loans all they have to do is get rid of the bankruptcy exemption. Then the loans would only be given to people who would be likely to repay them. That would clean out a lot of the rot on academia.
I paid my student loan back with my 401K. Probably the only person who did so in the world. Paid my car loan off as well then lost the car to an accident weeks later. Now im on SSDI with no retirement savings and no life insurance.
It's funny how we all pay for all the small business loan debt (PPP loans) of all our government officials without batting an eye, but college graduates and their loans are the worst monsters in the entire world. I say make the schools pay it all back, especially if companies are not paying what these schools are saying these degrees are worth!
Mike tells it like it is. He doesn't sugarcoat anything. Isn't it refreshing to hear actual truth for a change? I saw Mike's movie, "Stand For Something". It's something real!
How about corporations paying it for their future workers? They profit a trillion a month after low taxes. They don't pay for training anymore, and only offer some tuition reimbursement after your education. 50k is only $5 an hour for the first 5 years to get workers you need to make your profits. Home depot profits $16/hour for each of almost 500k employees, and Walmart twice that for 2 million employees.
Thank you for bringing this subject of loan forgiveness . I do not agree that people should have loan forgiveness especially if the taxpayers are stuck with their debt. It is their responsibility. I went to college to earn a degree as an RN in the 1980's, and worked hard 12-16 hour shifts many years to pay off all of my debt while raising children on my own and my ex-husband did not help with child support. I had no loan forgiveness. Now at 69 I am retired as I developed RA and OA. My husband who is 69 ( 2nd marriage for both of us and is so wonderful and a blessing) will need to work until he is 72 to retire for having to pay off the rest or his student loan of $125,000 . He is a Phycologist PhD~ has 3 jobs and works so hard. He has not been able to have any help to have a part of his loan forgiven. He even worked all through the Covid crisis to help those who were injured and in pain and needed counseling. I think it is unfair for those who expect a loan debt forgiveness for a loan that they acquired. Thank you for reading, Thank you Dr. Phil.
Student forgiveness of debt has no economic value. I have an idea ... why not forgive all of the tax and related legislation associated with the national 401K program. That frozen asset would then be freed-up and directly applied to the economy via transactions across America.
As I said years ago that the taxpayers are paying for that supposed forgiveness of these college students college tuition. This guy just confirms exactly what I've been saying for years and years and years.
I’m all for student loan forgiveness only if under one condition. The person receiving student loan forgiveness should be required to give their services to the tax paying public for free with no recompense.
College is 50,000 dollars to get an education. You come out of highschool without a home. K thru 12 is basically free. A smart parent would say don't go to college. 4 years to study a degree that you don't even know you are right for. As soon as Republicans come up with a plan to make college beneficial will go a long way.
Speaking for many people who have payed off or are still paying on college loans: Why should we now have to pay for these dead beat's college loans through our taxes?! When they signed up for college, they signed a contract to pay back their own loans. It's BS they aren't being held responsible for their decision to to to college and pay off their own debt! 😡
The only thing the government should do is eliminate the law that prevents the ability of student loans being able to be included if you file bankruptcy
I strongly support the pushing of the trades. However, I also (having had to pay $30000 for an $11000 Nursing student loan 32 years ago) would have no problem forgiving the loan after they've already paid what they originally borrowed. That amount of profit is insane especially after we the people bailed out some shady banks not so long ago to the tune of billions!
Under the current rules only people with very specific jobs can get loan forgiveness. This is because the education requirements for those jobs do not match the salaries.
Why would you get a degree that wasn't worth it from jump? All those jobs and salaries have always been able to be researched. Not our fault they got a worthless degree. I live by a Bible verse "A man that builds a house, counts the cost" All decisions in life have consequences, thats why we must weigh those decisions before making a snap decision.
Not from what I've read. Doctors and lawyers can get student loans paid for by taxpayers. Nothing is forgiven. It's paid by other people who didn't go to college or who already paid for their schooling. The whole point of going to college is to get a good paying job not some useless degree. Too many kids are getting useless degrees.
@@jamietwigg5152 so your child's teacher is worthless? How about their school counselor? Or the social worker who is helping abused children? Are those people worthless? They chose to get an education where they can help people. So I guess the choice is your, help forgive their loans, pay significantly higher property and income taxes so they can have a higher salary, or figure out how to school your own children.
@@melsmith3662 The PSLF is for people who are working in the public sector such as teachers, counselors, and social workers. If you feel those are useless degrees I'm not sure what to tell you.
I look at it like I didn’t go to college because I had to work and couldn’t afford to. Some people got to go for free because they had a baby as a single mom. I felt like if I went and had a baby I could get help. I felt like I’d tell you my view.
I worked 40 hrs a week going through college to pay for it. It took me six years and only had to take out a $5,000 loan my last year cause it was getting expensive. Granted it was 20 ywars ago and I was making $9.50 an hour as a maintenance man. I dont get these kids who go to school for a junk degree and cant work just so they can have the college experience. Its a joke.
me, u and i, taxpayers and those that have student loans...before covid my payment was lower, reasonable, manageable...then man made covid hit, loans were deferred WITHOUT additional interest added, and now that they have us back paying, my payment went UP...almost $100 over what it was pre-covid. try to call them and ask why, no one answers the phone, all i get is a recording saying my minimum wait tome to talk to someone is 5hrs...and thats when i call them 1st thing in the morning, if i call them at 10am, im told my minimum wait time to talk to someone is 8hrs...and there is NO WAY they are open past 6pm. and yes, i tried the having them call me back, they said it would prolly be around 6hrs...that was 2 months ago. federal govt works on govt time, and evidentially questioning why ur payment went up drastically isnt of their immediate concern

@@cjorgie1 The concern about abuse of the bankruptcy process is legitimate. However, the courts have instituted term requirements for repayment (5 years under a chapter 13 plan). Reforms could be as follow:
1) Any federal loans would be limited to the historical rate of education inflation from 1965-present, and granted priority unsecured status (and cannot be discharged under bankruptcy for a period of 20 years); the government would be paid first ahead of any creditors or private lenders.

How about a credit for the people that didn’t get their loans forgiven..
SHEESH!

If my brother gets his $150k education paid for by the government, how come the government won't give me $150k?
So True! How could anyone with a half a brain think student loans should be forgiven.

Mike Rowe for 2028!!!
Well, first, the people who went to college and paid THEIR loans back. Then, there's the people who chose NOT to go to college who get to pay for those idiots who aren't smart or honorable enough to pay off their own loans. There's also the people themselves who will pay via higher taxes (although they do come out ahead here).
I agree. Total good sense.
Great conversation!
The reality is they have repaid the loan they are forgiving the astronomical amount of interest that compounds.
It would have been nice if the conversation were actually about collage loan debt forgiveness.

Who pays for subsidies to farmers, oil and gas, corporations: taxpayers?
Phil.
Thanks Mike
Sorry Dr Phil don't be offended but this is the only time I listen to what you're saying only because Mike Rowe was there

Tuition should be capped by any college or university or trade school that accepts federal or state funding. Period!!

I live by a Bible verse "A man that builds a house, counts the cost"

Not from what I've read. Doctors and lawyers can get student loans paid for by taxpayers. Nothing is forgiven. It's paid by other people who didn't go to college or who already paid for their schooling. The whole point of going to college is to get a good paying job not some useless degree. Too many kids are getting useless degrees.
