    4:30 "unit power plant" The distinct bits we think of today as engine and transmission were built in one unit sharing lubricating oil. Austin was still building cars this way into the 1960s.

      Thank you!! I vaguely recall Powerflite working like that, though not built as one unit they did share oil. Some guy I ran into in the 1990s thought the Chrysler four-speed was junk because they failed every time he put in fluid. Turned out he was using engine oil because that's what his Powerflite took.

      @@motalesdave All automatic transmissions prior to Dexron 1 used something more akin to a modern anti-wear hydraulic oil. Engine oil was always too thick, though some like the Torqueflite (and apparently Powerflite) could tolerate it better.

    • @motalesdave
      @motalesdave  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@gregorymalchuk272 I didn't know you could use regular oil in a Torqueflite, not that I would. I followed the advice of people on Allpar years ago, and have been putting in ATF+4 that I had purchased for steering fluid on a different car. People claim it makes the shifts smoother, I suspect that's imaginary but it should make the fluid flow better on cold starts.

    we used to have a station locally when I was younger that played ol radio shows every day from 3 to 7 and Id listen to them (prefer radio over TV anywho still) and Jack Benny was a favorite show, and Rochester was an idol of mine, and honestly I believe he is what inspired my Snark.

    I can't think of anyone who was more universally revered in the world of comedy than Jack Benny. Part of his brilliance was knowing how to make the people around him shine. By the way, I can't get out of my head the 1955 Belvedere hardtop at the 0:07 mark. My mother had one.

    • @motalesdave
      @motalesdave  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That was pretty unusual - he was a comedian who did crack jokes but also played straight man extremely well. Some credit to Harry Conn for coming up with the act, but his timing was always perfect.

    Very Nicely Done! Jack Benny was quite a character, my best memories of him were as a child watching the Jack Benny show on television every week. Since that time I had the opportunity of seeing some of the movies that he was involved in and they were fantastic. Like many of the old time Hollywood stars we have lost there certainly won't be another like him! Thank You!

      I only found him late in life, I'd been curious because people kept referring to him. Like his radio show but wish I had a skip for the singers...

    I remember when Jack was appearing on the Mike Douglas Show and they went to Mike outside the studio waiting for Jack's limo to pull up. Instead, a city bus rolls up and Jack stepped off.

    Jack Benny's Maxwell was in Frankfort Indiana at the Goodwin auto museum. It has been years since I seen it , I assume it is still there.

    I own one ..The Maxwell lasted until 1925, when Chrysler formed the Chrysler Corp "" they bought the Maxwell plant'' . and renamed it THE GOOD MAXWELL ,I never heard of it being called the Chrysler Four, IT morphed into the Plymouth which was a Maxwell.... My 1924 club sedan was the most modern auto of it time, mine had all Remy electrical - starter, modern coil and distributor, Remy lighting, And had a high compression 4 cyl. continental red seal engine with locking transmission and all Aluminium trim . Remy vacuum fuel pump and the oil pump was on the outside of the block , An up draft solid brass Zenith carburetor that had 2 moving parts.

    I always enjoyed Jack. We had an older friend who was a draughtsman for Maxwell in the early 1900s. He attributed its downfall to switching to assembling cars from parts made by others. BTW: What’s wrong with a Valiant? The Slant 6 engine was innovative and reliable. I still drive a 64 and a 65.

    I read somewhere that the Maxwell was known as an unreliable car and the cars thus quickly depreciated to the point of no value and so could be bought very cheaply but then were difficult to keep running. This was a common belief long before Jack Benny had a radio or TV show, and since Benny's persona included being cheap to the point of absurdity, audiences in the radio days got the joke about his dedication to a cheap but unreliable Maxwell.
    In one of his TV shows, the cast takes his Maxwell on a trip, and it breaks down, of course, and Benny refuses to rent a car due to the expense, if I recall correctly.
    FYI, Rochester was the voice of reason on Benny's shows. He consistently tells Benny not to do what Benny says he plans to do, which always goes wrong.

    • @motalesdave
      @motalesdave  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The Maxwell was unreliable for a fairly short period in the 1920s, only one model which was brand new and poorly designed. The Three Musketeers turned it into the "Good Maxwell," I don't know how much of the bad rep continued; but sales of the Good Maxwell were, um, quite good!

      It's in the book ;) which you see above under "Shop." Yes, the Chrysler did not replace the Maxwell, but slotted in above it. In the case of the Imperial, well above it!

      @PapaWoody440 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@motalesdave The round gauges would be the Rally Instrument Cluster Package, option code A62, and it wasn't even standard on the 340 for 1970. With '70 being the first year, it was still technically the Valliant Duster. I don't think they were sure it would sell.

      @@PapaWoody440 Thanks. My memory isn’t what it was... the Dusters I’ve seen recently all had that package (I wonder if some people retrofitted it!). I do remember the Duster starting out as a Valiant - I can understand their not thinking it would sell given the Valiant Barracuda using a very similar formula and selling but not in the hundreds of thousands as the Duster did.

      @@motalesdave You nailed it on the 1st gen Barracuda. Not a bad car at all, but considering it went on sale just before the Mustang, I'm sure there were plenty of people at Plymouth who were really bummed.
